this was great! I didn't know Humphrey had such a cool backstory. I thought he was just a character the writers in Suikoden 2 were too lazy to write. Hence why is dialogues are just a bunch of periods
I have been a long time Suikoden fan so this lore is nothing new to me however revisiting them makes me go on a nostalgia trip. When the late Yoshitaka Muriyama made this game, I was in awe how expansive the lore was as well as the potential branching storyline for future Suikoden made me ecstatic. The 27 True Runes, the Kingdoms/Empires, the mysterious Jeanne, the Sindar Civilization and so on. However, as we all know this stopped with Suikoden 5 and the truth about some of these lores were never fully realized. I hope now that Suikoden 1 and 2 is having a fresh coat of paint, might we get a lore bump for this franchise. Great video, by the way!
Fingers crossed the remaster leads to a revival of the series. There's so much unexplored about the world, there's so much history, characters and lore that was never fleshed. There's too many cliffhangers and untold stories for them to not continue it. I hope the remaster leads to a whole new audience being brought in along with the old and gives Konami the nudge they need to continue the franchise.
I'd love to make one about the City-States. I have an idea in mind for it already. I'm thinking it'll cover the Dunan region as a whole and it'll be the history of both the City-States and Highland combined, leading up to the beginning of Suikoden 2. I'd like to do one covering the history of Kooluk / Island Nations / Gaien as well as they're all closely linked in the same region. And maybe one for the Queendom of Falena.
Thank you for such a detailed video! I myself am a streamer and huge Suikoden fan, I'll definitely point my audience to this video and channel in general when it comes to Suikoden lore :)
"Was unaware of a lot of this lore." Because game creators have a habit of making lore outside of the game. I simply love Suikoden, but I will always have the opinion that leaving the story out of the games is a gigantic imbecility, in addition to that it greatly diminishes the quality of the game.
A lot of this stuff could have, and should have been included in the Old Books in the games to build up the lore of the world. Unfortunately, they have a bad habit of only including a lot of backstory and worldbuilding material in books, short stories, manga and novels that only ever get released in Japan.
Haven't done fully watch the video but very nice explanation, keep it up! I plan on doing a reference to the Novel of Water Margin: Outlaw of the Marsh. How the novel tell the story and how the video game show the story. Will try to make links based on the novel. Currently reading it up till 25 pages and the connections & references are many! Best of luck to us creators, and thank you to all the Suikoden fans out there.
Glad you liked it. I wanted to try something new for the video since there's no game footage of these events and I was worried it wouldn't work out. I could do a video in this style for the history of other nations of the world too.
Thank you for this video! :D Was both fun and helpful seeing things play out on the map, being able to visualize the events/locations better~ A lot of this is new for me, I haven't looked much into the history of the Suikoden world outside of games 1-5~ Normally, political stories put me to sleep, but something about Suikoden politics just draws me in.
Glad you liked it! Same, political stuff normally bores me to death, but Suikoden's history and politics draws me in. I'll hopefully make more videos like this covering the other regions of the world.
Glad you enjoyed it! It was my first time making a video like that, and I was worried how it would turn out. Luckily people seem to like it, so I'm planning on making more about the other countries and regions of the world.
Thank You for the lore video, I cannot wait to play the remasters feeling it with all this knowledge and the new visuals to grant happynes to my inner child ❤❤
Awesome video, this was great! I'm curious, any chances of you using the other parts of your world maps for different regions, lol? I was very impressed by the level of detail for the Scarlet Moon Empire maps and think it'd be awesome to see how other borders shifted over the years. I know there's not as much detail for other nations, but even just a broad overview of the other nations would be really neat! :D
That's the plan! I'm thinking over ideas for other videos similar to this one. I'd like to do videos on the Dunan region covering the City-States and Highland. I'd also like to do a video about the Island Nations, covering the conflicts with Kooluk and Gaien, and maybe one covering the history of Falena.
Learning that Tir was a prisoner of war was new to me, as well as that Mathiu went to the Grasslands. I'm assuming this wasn't all thought out before the release of game 1, but it would be nice to have these details come up in the remake. The Grasslands are pretty far from Toran. It makes me wonder if Mathiu knew anyone there. Could be some tie-in to Caesar and Albert going there later.
Most of the information comes from books, short stories, manga and encyclopedia's that Konami released in Japan years after the games were out. I always felt like a lot of this stuff would've been great to have in in-game books in the library. It would really help flesh out the lore and stories of the world.
It's a good question. I'm not sure Mathiu would've made much difference in the long run had he initially accepted Odessa's request. It probably would've made some small differences here and there. Tir, as the son of the Empire's greatest general, was a better symbol and a bigger story for the people of the Empire to rally around than the Silverbergs.
It is a good video. But I think you made a little mistake. For once you never incoporated the time when Scarlet Moon Empire invaded South Window and Tinto regions. Only after City State repeled Scarlet Moon only then did they invade and ocupy Senan region.
@@CulganValya in Suikoden 2 Shu mentioned that North Window made a crusial role to push Scarlet Moon back when they invaded South Window principility. And I think that event was at the time when Succesion war was taking place.
@@Fitcher987 Oh, that one line of throwaway dialogue from Shu. No lore of any kind exists about that event. It would be impossible for that to have occurred during the War of Succession as the entire army was tied up in a civil war. And it would be impossible to have happened after the war as they could barely even muster a force to defend themselves. Maybe it happened before the War, during the time Teo found Gremio wandering in the Karakas desert, but that's total speculation with nothing to back it up. The problem with that event is that no timeframe was ever given for it. No year was ever mentioned, and no details about the event were ever explained. Nothing was ever said about it in any of the books or encyclopedia's either. The only thing we know about it is from a single line of dialogue from Shu where he says North Window played a key role in the counteroffensive, and that line was largely to hype up the castle to the player as a defensible location for your new headquarters. As no year or details exist about it, there's nowhere to fit it in the video, and there's no story to tell. Anything anyone attempts to say about that event is 100% made up, as no official lore of any kind exists about the event.
@@CulganValya true. But it would also be strange that South Window and Tinto would attacked Scarlet Moon Empire unprovoked since they had their problems with Highland and since City State is clearly weeker then Scarlet Moon.
@@Fitcher987 It could've happened prior to the civil war, and Tinto/South Window's attack could have been retaliatory and occurring much later since the empire was weak. Or, if it occurred during the Succession War, it could've been done by some of Gale's overzealous men after their initial success at the start of the war. Historically such invasions occurred just to keep troops happy and give them more things to loot.

It's the little red dot to the right of South Window by the river. It's just north of the little white patch(Rokkaku) in the north of the Empire.
