Suikoden - The Viki Timeline
Viki is one of the most mysterious and beloved characters in the Suikoden series. She has appeared in every mainline game without aging and by teleporting herself through time. She's been a character of much speculation by the fans over the years, so let's talk about her timeline and see if we can make sense of it!

    One possibility with her outfits is that her magic alters them depending on time period and possibly location, with the caveat that she will be in that time and location for a while, and is not just hopping in briefly. In Suikoden III her newer clothes don't seem like they'd be too out of place in the Grasslands, for example, while in Suikoden V, they seem like they'd fit Falenan fashion. The overall look doesn't change, such as the color scheme, but the smaller details seem almost adapted to wherever she winds up. It might even be a tell of sorts for her to know she's somewhere she needs to remain. Her dialogue about someone protecting her comes to mind. She says it to Tir, Riou, and Lazlo, and asks the Prince of Falena for his protection as well. Its been a while since I played III, mind you, so I don't recall if she said anything similar to the MC there. Yet, when she met Nash, she didn't ask for his protection, and her clothes were largely the same as they were in Suikoden II. The biggest flaw in this theory, is that I don't know if she's attentive enough to even be aware her clothes would change like that at random.

    Considering they don't plan the games ahead of time, it's very likely they forget things over time or make something up and not realize it contradicted something prior or will in the future. They have to retroactively make up something for VIki with each new installment and that can be hard to keep up with, especially over years. I think little Viki is mature as a trope, to have the younger one be the opposite of her older self. I've seen it before in something, but can't name it now. To have that drastic of a personality shift requires brain damage, hypnosis, magic or something. Otherwise it's a creative choice that may not have a reason. One reason is Suikoden is pretty grounded. If Viki were to be normal, it would be a very dark, horrible fate to sneeze (randomly for whatever reason) and end up in different times and places. It would drive someone mad, so they made her personality ditzy to bypass the gravity of it and it becomes light-hearted. Consider how lucky she is to never appear in a dangerous or fatal situation and die immediately. One can think she's being guided to some extent and would have to be in order to appear at pivotal events in history and run be necessity to such efforts. If not, the creator was doing so and would come up with an answer for it later, but Viki was a staple to have in each game along with other handful of characters. Characters that appeared later in series like the True Rune bearers in Suikoden III should appear in other games as well one would imagine, but they weren't a thing in first two entries. As for outfits, I think it may be as simple as a character designer being a character designer. The outfits are all similar in color scheme and overall form. The two games that have the outfits the same I'm not sure about other than putting myself in the artist shoes and say they harkened back to a previous design for that game. Those were the games Fumi worked on, so those were her takes on her look and used it again. Think of it as the trope of characters wearing the same outfit all the time but never being an issue. Perhaps Viki is in the same outfit in each game, only the design from different artist is the thing that varies, but not an in-game fact.

    The inconsistency with Suikoden 3 and Suikogaiden 2 could be fixed if Suikoden 6 was set in Jowston again. Or perhaps Jowston and another area. Just because we had one game use the area doesn't mean they can never visit it again. There's plenty more they could do, and plenty of unused space in each area. IIRC the area east of Dunan/Jowston was never really established, it's assumed there is just mountains and then water. Could retcon the east coast a bit to make it traversable and turn the ocean there into more of a sea, and add a Japanese themed landmass nearby that Genkaku could be from. Then set the game in Jowston and this new place both. That's my fanfiction explanation, lol.

    i think its not just teleportation i think its cloning too .. i mean when her job was done in S1 her powers cloned her into a needed place with her memories intact hence we saw two Vikis in S3 .. so maybe there is multiple vikis just like Jeane .. i hope someone knows the answer to that besides Murayama may he rest in peace.

      I always thought Little Viki was from a parallel universe rather than a clone. Viki herself could have a True Rune but we only see the Blinking Rune much like we only see a Wind Rune on Luc in S1&2 and the Eight Devil Rune on Yuber in S3. I believe Jeane is an ancient android, possible Simeon too. Loving this Suikoden content btw!

      Wait, there are MULTIPLE JEANES? Since when? How? How dare you give me the greatest news of my life without explaining?!

    • @CulganValya
      @CulganValya 23 години тому

      The multiple Jeanes theory is because Fumi Ishikawa (the character artist for Suikoden 2, 3, Gaiden 1 & 2, and Card Stories said during an interview in Dengeki PS Vol 217) that, "She doesn't seem like she has aged at all, but she doesn't have a true rune." She then says, "Apparently, Jeane's family all have the same face." But Fumi Ishikawa has been wrong on things she has said in the past. For starters she said Hugo's dad has black hair, but Yoshitaka Murayama said Hugo's dad has blonde hair. In Suikoden 3 Jeane has a bath scene with Lilly Lilly: I'm not one to beat around the bush, so I'll get straight to the point. Did you serve in the Dunan Army during the Unification War? Jeane: Me in the Dunan Army... Hee hee! Well... kind of, but kind of not." Lilly: Well, which is it? Jeane: Yes, which one... Well, let's say that yes, I did... Lilly: Do you know Tinto's historian. Marlowe Cody? He also serves in the army. Recently, he came by the castle and apparently saw you Jeane: Without offering so much as a greeting or a handshake... Teasingly saying maybe I did, maybe I didn't, but then gives away that she knows Marlowe. In Suikoden 3 she leaves letters in the suggestion box. One talking about Futch and addressing him as an old friend. They fought together during Suikoden 1 and 2. And another letter talking about Nash, calling him rude for asking why she hasn't changed. They met previously during Suikogaiden Vol 1 (which takes place during Suikoden 2). In Suikoden 5, Viki leaves 2 letters in the comment box. One talking about Lorelai. Swearing she's never met her before. The other letter is about Jeane. In the letter Viki talks about them having met before. Lots of times, in lots of different places. So she doesn't remember Lorelai, but knows Jeane. So this can't be the Viki from Suikoden 1, 2 or 3 or else she would also remember Lorelai. So Jeane and Viki definitely had multiple encounters in the past that we've never seen in any games. And in the Suikoden 4 bath scene between Viki and Jeane, I got the impression Jeane very clearly recognised Viki and was simply being coy. Viki's letter about Jeane in Suikoden 5 basically confirms they've met many times before. In Suikoden 5 Jeane asks you to help her recover something she left behind in the ruins that are revealed in the crater that Levi created. But those ruins are from the Ancient Armes Kingdom, a nation that existed before Falena, and has been buried underground likely since before Falena was created. Meaning the ruins are well over 700 years old at that point. So Jeane possibly has a connection to the Ancient Armes Kingdom. It's most certainly the same Jeane that's appearing in each game. But for whatever her reasons, she tries her best not to give anything away.

    In "The Once and Future King", merlin is described as perceiving time backwards, that is to say he remembers tomorrow the way we would remember yesterday. Is it possible the time travel has caused Viki to perceive time the same way? Hence not recognizing herself as a child yet the child recognizes her? edit: scratch that, it's stupid. More likely child Vki met an even older version of Viki before meeting 'original' Viki. Or the writers just made an honest mistake (happens to the best)

    • @CulganValya
      @CulganValya 23 години тому

      The Once and Future King sounds interesting. I'll definitely look that up! It's possible she's experiencing time backwards, but the meetings between Viki and child Viki in Suikogaiden 2 and Suikoden 3 contradict each other. If Gaiden 2 comes first, which it does timeline wise. How did she not know child Viki in 3? And if she's experiencing time backwards, how did she not recognise child Viki in Gaiden 2 if they met in 3? Either way, she would've met herself at least once before. She might be a ditzy airhead about details, but she does remember people. I dunno, her whole timeline is a mess. Trying to make sense of it appears to be impossible.

    Seems to be a standard ranking. I couldn't stand Tierkries so much I can't be bothered to spell the name right. Nothing felt like it was Suikoden. I know I played a few hours before quitting. I think Suikoden IV was a victim of it's budget as to my eyes then it seemed cheap. Now Suikoden V surprised me how conflicted I felt about it. I liked parts, liked characters then disliked later, disliked to liked lol! Especially with villains and heroes. The end pissed me off with the aunt (Sialeeds?) betraying you for truly no reason at the end, ruining the last bit of family that made it to the end of a story. I think I played Tactics at the wrong time in life because I despised it for a reason I can't explain.

    • @CulganValya
      @CulganValya 3 дні тому

      I can definitely see why you gave up on Tierkreis. It's Suikoden in name only and has nothing to do with the series, and that was a huge turn off and let down for many people. I think it would've been received better if it didn't have the Suikoden name attached. I'm not sure if IV was the victim of a poor budget, or it was just poorly made. It definitely looks the worst of the bunch. Has the least interesting cast of the main series. Has a rushed story. Whatever the cause was, it was underwhelming and a big letdown. V is amazing. I agree with you on the characters, some of them showed growth and others regressed. I went through the same thing where I went form liking them to disliking them and disliking to liking. As for Sialeeds betrayal, it wasn't exactly for no reason. She wanted the nation to be rid of the corrupt, power hungry noble elite who were rotting the country from the inside. She couldn't kill them while with the prince or it would sully his name, so she fakes swapping sides to undermine the Godwins from within, kills Lord Barrows, this way it tarnishes the Godwins name and not the royal family. They definitely needed to do a better job explaining it though. Tactics certainly isn't to everyone's taste. The art style can be very offputting for some. The change in genre put others off. Being a follow up to a game people hated put even more off. I think it changed to much that most felt the same as you did. They just hated it.

      @@CulganValya I think Tactics was just at the wrong time for me as I like Tactics games. Maybe one day I'll look back into it. V was better in graphics than IV, but it still was bland in ways. I definitely think budget was an issue as Konami pinches anything not Metal Gear Solid. All the Castlevania had limited budgets, so a JRPG wasn't going to get a lot of attention either. Sialeeds could have manipulated (whatever her former fiancee's name was), trick them into compromising themselves by exposed their actions. That could have been planned way early in the plot if her goal and let the Prince know same time. Just killing the Burrows wouldn't solve anything, that's just silencing one powerful noble family to another perspective. There was also the fact she still did have feelings for whats-his-name. The problem was she felt she HAD to have the Prince kill her, knowing he and the Princess only had her left for family. He has to live with that, and if got real, known it was completely avoidable. It came off as an impulsive decision on her part think only in the immediate. I liked the game a lot, definitely an improvement over IV (which I still liked). I will say I liked the Princess by the scene she asks the Prince to stay with her. She became the cute little sister for that moment instead of that divide of roles. I barely liked her up to that point, but was happy to find my expectations turned around with that writing. We still have yet to go to Harmonia lol! That place is like heaven in a since as you hear about it, it's grandeur, but never see it. I wish they'd sell the IP, or at the least, some AA studio wants to take the title to make. They let Castlevania be butchered by Netflix

    Jowy was too innocent to know how Rina convinced the border guard to let them through. I can't be certain but I doubt Jowy went from that to using sex to manipulate a woman in just a few months. Further, he and Jillia seemed genuinely loyal for each other despite the highly unorthodox circumstances. Add to the explicit detail of the father having black hair. My 'theory' If it could be called that, is that Hugo's father fills the same narrative roll as Genkaku: a backstory character meant to inform the main characters inspiration to be a force for good.

      In the same few months Jowy also went from a loyal, loving best friend to a murderer, a schemer and a manipulator. Now I'm not saying he manipulated Lucia with sex, but could have taken advantage of her anger and thirst for revenge, which may have led to sex, as we've seen how devoted Lucia was to him. He did seem genuinely in love with Jillia, but he also genuinely loved his best friend, but that didn't stop him from luring his best friend into an ambush with fake peace talks, forcing him to surrender under threat of death. We've seen what he's willing to do to accomplish his goals. Now, do I believe any of that? No. I don't believe Jowy is the father, but it's not an impossibility. As for the black hair, that detail is no longer true. The black hair comment was made by the character artist, but the creator of the series has contradicted that by stating Hugo's father has blonde hair. My personal belief is that Hugo's dad is just some random Karayan, and his identity is completely irrelevant. As you said, he's just a backstory character to help shape Hugo's personality.

Thomas is a nice kid, but zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz he's such a boing character. Budehuc is a nice location, but it's an awful castle. I get they were broke at the beginning of the game, but as the war progressed and it became populated and money started flowing in, you're telling me not a single person could straighten a painting? Or clean the cobwebs? Clean up the rubble? Dust the floors? Or even begin to start repairs? 1 can never be #1, it doesn't have Mukumuku!!! I'll never leave, I've got more bad takes on the way!

The walls get fixed, you put up paintings you find, the cobwebs get cleaned. idk when you last played it but it definitely gets super nice by the end! and Thomas is so underrated like imagine your role in destiny is the tenkai star but you're just a normal lad. that's tough! you're not a kid who has a military father or grown up in a dojo. you're just a boy! that's got some merit to it. i'll die on this hill lol

      @@SailorYen89 Are you sure it gets renovated? I don't ever remember that happening. The last time I played it was 6 years ago, but I just loaded up an old save from Chapter 4 and the castle is still dilapidated. There's several big holes in the walls of the castle itself, there's crumbling on the wall at the top of the stairs. The entire outer walls surrounding the castle are still falling apart. I definitely see why you like him so much. He's just a normal kid that's thrown into a situation and he's way out of his depth. I think the reason he's so disliked / underrated is because he feels like the tenkai star in name only.. Generally the tenkai star is the main character you play as for the entire game, but Thomas's 2 chapters are optional, and his role as the tenkai star is spread out among him and the three other characters until chapter 4, where you choose which of those three you want to be the main character. The plot centers more around the other characters than him. I think he would've been more appreciated and liked if he wasn't the tenkai star, but rather a different SoD, and he was just some kid with a big countryside manor that offered it up to the player. I'll die on the hill that Hugo is in fact the real tenkai star of Suikoden 3.

      @@CulganValya I... thought it did? I remember it being so much nicer at the end but maybe I'm misremembering afterall which is a bit disappointing lol. I love Thomas because I picture like, what if Tir was just a bookish lad instead of someone who'd been trained to fight from a young age. He'd still have been through all the same things he normally would, except he'd have to rely on other people for any combat. Which is essentially how it is for Thomas (aside from waving his lil sword around sometimes). Although if you think about it, the Tenkai's only job in reality is to gather the stars. Or to be "the one the stars gather around" more accurately. Which is exactly what Thomas does with the castle. Doesn't say anywhere they gotta be he front man of anything. (Small side note, I have a request! Can you remember or find out or ask someone something for me. The Dwarf village in S1, the actual village with buildings, is it.. onTOP of a mountain? Underground? In a cave? Do you have any idea what it's actual physical location is? Ty!)

    Lovely video, I especially enjoyed hearing your memories with Suikoden 1! Funnily enough I only got into this series after the remaster announcement for S1/2 (& ended up beating S1-5 + Tactics) but it's already left a strong impression on me, and I'd say Suikoden 5 in particular & 1/2 were my faves, but I have a positive feeling on all the Suiko games I played. S4's music (in particular the rune of punishment theme) was so memorable to me despite wishing the story and characters were a lot more fleshed out. While I didn't play it myself, I actually thought Woven web of the century was quite an interesting game when watching a video summary on youtube. Different, but not in such a bad way? I'll play the fan translation one day to get the full experience

    • @CulganValya
      @CulganValya 11 днів тому

      Suikoden 1, 2 and 5 are definitely the most popular entries with the majority of the fandom. 3 is an iffy entry for most. People who played 1 and 2 before 3 find a lot of issues with 3, but people who started the series with 3 absolutely love it to death. I agree with you on Suikoden 4. It's got a great soundtrack. The Rune of Punishment theme is beautiful. It's a real shame the story and characters weren't fleshed out. It could've been something great, but we the whole experience felt unfinished. Tactics certainly helps expand on it, and makes it more enjoyable, but there's still too much missing from 4 to make it a complete experience. Woven Web of the Century is about as bland and generic as low budget rpgs game. Once the initial buzz of finally being able to play it wore off after the first couple of hours, I just wasn't vibing with it. I didn't like it at all. I'm honestly hard pressed to say anything positive of Woven Web. A lot of people did enjoy the game though, it just wasn't my thing.

    In Suikoden 2 there are multiple cases of optional dialogue that are dependent on who you have in your party. It's possible that Leon Silverburg was more focused on the Beast Rune Demon at the end of the game but you'd think he or Rikimaru would throw out a line of dialogue if you have Rikimaru with you.

    • @CulganValya
      @CulganValya 11 днів тому

      That's also a very good point! I actually had Rikimaru in my party in L'Renouille during my most recent playthrough and there was no dialogue between the two. But for all the great bonus dialogue Suikoden has, they also miss out on many opportunities too. Kreutz has no dialogue if you bring him to the final battle in Suikoden 1 for example.

    Obe thing is if he is the younger brother his revenge doesn't have to be for his older siblings. Do we know how their parents died? Maybe he wants to avenge them, or just someone else he cared deeply about who wasn't a family member.

    • @CulganValya
      @CulganValya 20 днів тому

      We know next to nothing about the parents. All that's known is that they were an aristocratic family that lived in Gregminster. Leon became Mathiu's guardian after the parents died and started teaching him. But we're given no exact dates for any of that. At the start of Suikoden 1 Mathiu would've been 32, Odessa 21 and Rikimaru would've been 19. But we also know that Mathiu and Leon served the Empire during the War of Succession which was 9 years prior. So Mathiu would've been 23 at the time. Odessa would've been 12 and Rikimaru would've been 10 at that time. From here all we can do is guess. Mathiu wouldn't have needed a guardian at this age. So it's safe to say the parents must have died when Odessa and the younger brother were very young. So yes, if Rikimaru is a Silverberg. then it's very possible that his quest for revenge is not related to a family member, but a friend or a lover, as I think I mentioned in the video. To be honest, I don't think he's a Silverberg. He's an unrelated, optional, secondary character with a mysterious background that we'll likely never see again.
