FF8 was a game I played as a teenager and didn't fully understand the plot. Videos like this are helpful to give me more context and appreciate the story

I've completed VIII about 10 times over the past 25 years, but I'm still taken aback at quite how deep the lore is when laid out like this. You must've fine-tooth-combed the whole script a dozen times to catch it all. Already excited for part 3!
It’s this type of story telling that makes this game so much better than what we initially experienced playing it. Many of the writers were ahead of their times in terms of what they could actually physically put in the games, but their world building is second to none. With remakes now a standard talking point, this game could be well-received if redone utilizing all of this lore you have been putting out there that exists for this game. These videos make me enjoy the game even more than I already did. Excellent job!
This is kinda silly, but watching this made me realize that FFVIII's fashion is actually quite comfy. Final Fantasy and JRPGs in general are kind of stereotyped as having impractical rule-of-cool clothing, but I think I'd be fine wearing most of VIII's outfits casually. Not Dr. Odine's though, that collar would get scuffed pretty quick.
nomura's designs have always been inspired by tokyo streetwear, and the nature of viii's setting means their clothes get close enough that everything ends up looking extremely wearable! xiii's cast is also pretty good for this, at least for the characters from cocoon, while twewy is also worth mentioning, given the cast are literally tokyo streetkids.
Man, Final Fantasy VIII is so underrated. I go back and forth on which is my favorite (between VII and VIII), but right now, I’m leaning VIII. Thank you for your hard work on this series exploring the lore! I eagerly await future installments!
That so much rich history within FF8. This is an awesome documentary. Also the northern crate was due to artificial lunar cry? I always thought is a plot armour not to allow players to go to Esthar from north lol
The timing! Just two hours ago I scanned through your channel if the second part was already uploaded and I just missed it! Can't wait to follow you again into the lore, thanks for your work!
I have played through FF8 several times.. it was my very first (and therefore special to me) FF game, and seeing this made me realize that in the grand scheme of the game lore I still knew almost nothing about it. Very deep and comprehensive look.
This is the kind of world mythology that future mainline titles should pursue. A mix of technology and magic, with political intrigue baked in. I feel like this is the essence of Final Fantasy stories. Great deep dive!
@@jamesgravil9162from 6 onwards, yes. Skipping 9. Tactics is very low technology compared to 12 wich is the same world at its peak. 13 is full on cyber magic punk while 15 is more like ff7 or 8 albeit with some bad execution here and there (I still find it cool).
Man, this makes Final fantasy VIII's story actually pretty good. I never knew a lot of this! If this installment is ever graced with a remake, these expansive elements should be carefully considered.
This is SO well written and all encompassing! Thank you for highlighting such a complex story that has always hidden just below the surface 🤯 I really want an VIII prequel now!!
Thank you for tackling this story and I can't leave for the next content. This is probably the most detailed pieces of the story I've heard in a long time. Keep up the great work y'all and I can't wait for the next part!

Because it wasn’t in the actual game. A little bit of the minute details were, but this was all told way after the game came out because fans were mad about how bad the lore was compared to 7.
The game was cut in half. They initially wanted it 50/50 between Squall and Laguna. Half.in the past, half in the present. I assume much of the Laguna section, which was cut out, had information 9n the sorceress wars.
FF 8 is not just my favorite Final Fantasy, it is my favorite game of all time 😍 thank you SO much for your granular examination of it! 🎉 Cannot wait for part 3!
I'd like for a FF8 Game that takes place during the Sorceress War, Adel is a Antagonist i'd love to see in action at her prime and possibly other Sorceresses.
Enjoyed both the videos so much! Ff8 is my favorite and will al always have a special place for me. Its interesting how this video covered on a lot that I did not even know of. Thanks for making such entertaining videos. Waiting for a part 3 that covers current timeline and the future (cid and edea, orphanage, making of garden, ultimecia, griever, seeds figting across generations etc)
Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to explain the details of the story. It really makes me look more fondly back at my time playing FF8....other than drawing magic for so long... looking forward to the next one
Thank you for the great work in putting this all together! This was a major game in my childhood, and SOOO much of this plot was lost to me at the time. It goes to show me how much effort went into the worldbuilding of this game!
Brilliant video! I honestly had no idea about any of this lore and both videos were fantastic. Love the presentation, story telling, everything! 10/10.
This game has been with me all of my life. I even have a gunblade hanging on my wall in acknowledgement of its effect on me. I always knew the story but never had the ability to truly put it all together in my head. This really helped to make clear something very deeply hidden in more recent final fantasy entries. Sakaguchi, Nomura, Takahashi and the various other writers of Square where well aware of how tragic history can be. It's almost like the purpose of writing these games were to help people work through the emotions and fears we would hold in our generation. I can't help but think of Machiavelli, Tsun-Tsu, and John Locke whenever I look at the stories of the final fantasies outside of the perspectives of the main characters. This once again really helped with that. this also keeps reminding me of the questions each game asks its player without them realizing it every time they play through these stories: What is it that separates those who live a normal life, from those who will be written in the annals of history? What did it take to make those people grab a hold of their destinies and fight to change the world they live in. Can we, the holder of the controllers hear the manifesto to change the world... can we do so? I think maybe. but only if we can break our shackles of fear, our dependence on comfort and find the emotional and mental state that allows us to burn brightly and relentlessly until the fire can burn no more. I'm American. I am sad to be one. I am sad for monsters are pulling puppet strings everywhere and I feel helpless and hopeless on how to stop the violence or repent for the sins of our country. For now all I can do is hope that this inspiriation and my life experiences help me to cook up a way to help make things better for someone somewhere. Thank you for this video. I needed it to process a part of my own feelings.
I finally discovered a program called antimicro that lets me map my keyboard to my controller so i can play this on steam, it would never work for me and i dont know how to get ps1 emulators to work lol, so i can now revisit my favorite game from my youth! These videos are really great. ❤

FF8’s hidden lore is something that was way ahead of its time. If this would have come out post-Dark Souls where people began appreciating having lore you need to work at piecing together, it would be viewed so much differently.
