- Adult Animation Is Obsessed With Depression. It's a recurring theme in many adult animated shows, and I want to talk about how different characters experience depression.

Hi, welcome to the BenOverIt channel. Today we're going to be talking about how Adult Animation Is Obsessed With Depression in this adult animation video essay. In this video essay, we'll be talking about the shows Bojack Horseman, Rick and Morty, Smiling Friends, South Park, Family Guy, Clone High, and Invincible. Adult animation depression is by no means a new concept, which is why we have a lot to cover in a short amount of time in this tv show analysis video essay. This video isn't Rick and Morty season 7, or Smiling Friends season 2, but we do talk about those shows in this video.
I like how UA-cam is showing me content that I like from smaller UA-camrs instead of the same 10 UA-camrs they want me to watch
i’m glad you liked the video!
fr makes me feel more apart of the culture too idk
Omg same. UA-cam is starting to be good again
Fr been finding some amazing small channels that are just full of passion
they always were. you just didn’t want to accept their other creators.
I think its because the people who make these shows are depressed and want to speak on their experiences, or maybe its a generational thing
either or, but it must take a lot out of someone to make animation, so i suppose i can’t blame them for projecting a bit if that is the case
@@BenOverIt You didn't really get into why "Adult Animation Is Obsessed With Depression" at all in this video. That's what I was most interested to hear your thoughts on when I saw the title and decided to click.
Your list of examples was fine, and you even put some pretty good jokes in there, but you didn't really *say* anything.
But the creators of the show aren’t even from your generation
@@senorfrog5605their generation still exists or they want to give advice/warning to the next generation
I think it's because it looks deep.
as an adult who has been happy, sad, heartbroken, betrayed, euphoric, I love shows that aren’t afraid to dig into more ‘depressed’ views. We all go through it, but know little to nothing about everyone’s story. this is why I love adult animation cartoons because my depression stage was definitely different from the next, but we live and learn
💯
Depression stage? Are you saying it ended?
as a person who has experienced emotions i like shows that show emotions
BoJack Horseman was great. It really made me go through a whole lot of reflecting about the show and what happens in the show. Especially the later seasons get really deep and dark. I feel like this show made me a little more depressed. 10/10 would recommend.
bojack horseman genuinely changed my outlook on life, it’s such a good show
you are hilarious. And thank you for not saying "unaliving." I HATE that for so many reasons. Bravo.
the problem lies within youtube whom does not let people say the word.
@@gathor_ I know. It's dumb. And I respect ppl who still say what they mean, regardless.
Can I ask what the problem with the word is?
@@YLLGRYM Yea. I think pretty, diluted language isn't helpful. It reduces the severity of the subject and the consequences thereof. It makes a cuter little "safe space" psychologically where it doesn't belong. It's like putting glitter all over atrocities in a way. Many people are already desensitized more than enough, in a harmful way. Diluted language like "grape" and "unalive" helps that along even more. Plus, IMO it further minimizes what those things mean in a world that already has little care about them already- leaving survivors and their families little room to heal, or even express truthfully
@@essencer.9494 that last part really stuck with me. Thank you for the perspective.
lol didn’t even realize i was watching a guy with so little subs, keep up the good work man :) i subbed
hey! thanks dude! i rly appreciate your support
Brother has 14k+ subs 💀 that is nothing w lil subs
This is the first time I've seen narcissism being associated with self doubt and self loathing, and not egomania / excessive delusional-over-self-confidence, which is accurate. It stems from seeking external validation as you have no internal sense of value.
And their lack of internal sense of value stems from dysfunctional childhoods. Something more people needs to realize is that narcissistic personality disorder is one of the many branching paths of CPTSD, it's what happens when you never heal and you never leave a victim mentality. People love to view other people in black or white, but it's not how the real world works. Most perpetrators are also victims and society should start acknowledging that fact.
You've never heard of valuable narssisim?
@@myself2noone I haven't. Please elaborate
Wish Moral Oral was on here
i’ve never seen moral oral, but i was thinking about watching it for this video. i didn’t end up doing it but it prob would’ve been a fun inclusion on the list
@@BenOverIt I definitely recommend it. It gets dark in season 3.
Agreed. Bojack Horseman and Rick and Poopy exist due to the foundation Moral Orel set down.
@@BenOverItMoral Oral changed the trajectory of my life
Moral Oral was actually the takes on Christianity and it’s contradictory beliefs ie gaes, same sex, murder etc. the darkest episode was the camping trip. After that it’s just a domino effect of bad things
I just think writer’s are too obsessed with projecting their own ideas and feelings without nuance. And they’re forgetting the jokes.
as someone who grew up with Depression (started taking medication for it when I was 5) I am just glad Depression is something people are finally talking about openly. It's necessary to let people know they're not alone in that struggle and it's nice to see the things I've gone through and can relate to represented.
5? This generation is cooked getting addicted to drugs in kindergarten 😂
@@Akeirbuah actually I'm a millennial, I started taking medication for it in the early 90s. I know there are parents out there who will try medication first thing when maybe something else might work instead, but I personally was suffering a lot from my depression as a little kid and was actively asking--begging--my mom for help and meds. My depression was so bad back then that it was affecting my development and sometimes I'd even have issues with reality. The key in regards to mental health and meds is parents listening to their kids about those things and following their lead.
Because adult depression is reality, when you start to understand that you understand nothing ypu start to understand everything it breaks the way you see life and death you question EVERYTHING.
this is very true
That right there is some real pseudo-profouns BS.
Some adults are depressed, many feel depressed but are not "depressed" depressed.
But adult existence is not depression.
D
Try to to look at life more clearly. Without these gray glasses of doom and gloom.
@@Nai-qk4vpeasy for you to say
@Nai-qk4vp Those glasses are what depression is. It's like an eclipse that blocks all positivity.
Awe man I'm subbing just for that comment about how fucking stupid the phrase "un-alive" is!
it’s so stupid
BoJack horseman is truly my favorite show to ever exist( new sub)
mine too!
adult animation would NOT be because of rick and morty. look up the shows downtown, mission hill and others during the 2000's. rick and morty basically bred the lazy time of adult animation where everything had to be cras tell me about a series that had the characters trying to pay bills on time. or something relatable, sure depression happens but there are good times of being an adult
Bro watched the stop saying unalive video. And I agree
i actually haven’t! i’ve seen it in my recommended tho
Hell yeah! let's go.
Anyone with a brain knew how stupid that baby talk is without watching a video that tells them to stop using those words. If people these days need to watch a video to realize that I find it really sad
9:22 the second you said this i was just like brian automatically lol

probably because i’m not real

Its cuz life can be rough sometimes man.
so true and real
"Even when Stan has conquered his depression, he still stands on a vice from a more difficult time."

It’s incredibly frustrating. Feels like in order to to plug one hole you have to open another

only thing holding me hostage is the grind
Never blinks because I'm the one with the key.
Yeah, because they show reality. this is basically 70% of mens experience nowadays.
mental health is extremely important, but it’s not just a men’s thing, and this is coming from a mentally ill man with a history of depression. depression is 50% more common in women according to WHO, but that doesn’t devalue men feeling the same. it’s really important we talk about these things because it destigmatizes mental health and as a result, helps people get the help they need, but these people can be of any gender. the takeaway is that we have a really depressed world
The WHO nuked it's credibility years ago, and the way the sexes deal with depression is very different and much more important than the largely irrelvant flamebait topic of who has it more, which really just exists to mire the discourse in the gender war and distract from ever actually solving the problem of depression.
I don't know what was "cringe" about that part... you spoke honestly about a crappy depiction of depression. Nothing to apologize for.
i felt i came across as a little too dramatic in the clip is why
The THX sound is sending me lmao
once i started using it, i couldn’t stop
As someone who has been fighting with depression since a pre-teen and haven't really got any help for it (will try again in the future), I like when TV series show depression and how it affects differently to everyone and it's much more than just sadness and how it can lead for addictions, problematic behaviour and the thoughts of ending oneself.
If anyone suffers with depression please stay safe out there, life can be awful but life is like a car.
When you feel the happiest, you have your car full. When you go to the low point your car runs out of gasoline which means you have to start pushing your car until you find the next stop to get more gasoline which you most likely don't know how far it is. You can take breaks from pushing the car, but if you do the car (problems) won't go away and you need to push it to get trough and get to fill the car (aka. get your happiness). You can always ask people to help you with pushing the car and it's okay !!! You're never alone.
It's because all good comedians are severely depressed. Tragic side of comedy, tears of a clown and such...
love it when benoverit posts and fills me up
Excuse me?
amen
Would love a video game related version of this topic too, there's even the whole meme with a specific type of indie games
that sounds fun! still on depression, just depicted in games?
@@BenOverIt - that sounds good, though if you know of any games that depict mental illnesses other than depression that sounds good to include too
Real, I know a guy on Discord who has had to skip out on entire games like Omori because he doesn’t want to be reminded of his struggles.
@@legometaworld2728 - that's understandable. Though me personally _OMORI_ has become one of my all-time favorite RPGs for the same reason.

You nailed this video dude. I’d love to watch full length videos of you analyzing certain shows
Annoying most people correlate mental illness = depression 🤦🏽♂️
depression is a mood disorder, which is a mental illness
It's because we (adults) are depressed and either too ashamed or proud to share. Or don't have the tools to express it.
03:37 he blinks 🎉🎉🎉
Three words:
Adults are depressed
very true
At most, 25% of people have or will have a depressive episode in their life. I'm not saying we shouldn't be sympathetic to those people, but you know that's not most people, right? The overwhelming majority of people are not depressed in any given moment. Besides neuroticism, the personality trait most associated with depression, goes down the older you get.
The bullshit asymmetry principle strikes agian.
@@myself2nooneAdults can also find their happiness as well
This is a great video, I subscribed :)
BTW why you look A.I generated

it’s because i am ai generated; i’m not real
Great video love it but the camera quality is pretty bad. You deverse lot more subs and views than you have. Have a great day (:
hey! thank you so much! the camera quality did turn out pretty bad in this one, but i’ll try fixing it with a better lighting setup soon. have a great day as well! :)
I became really depressed in my late teens and early twenties. Didn't help that I was constantly struggling with pain in my knees from playing football. I got out of it when I met my ex gf at the supermarket. It's a totally new feeling when you make a lasting connection and are able to contribute positively to someone else's life; it allows you to elevate yourself and be more aware. We broke up after we both started dating different people, but I will always appreciate meeting her.
It’s bad and good because kids will find these when they’re older, the shows are well made imo. Tear across the dotted line and bojack horseman for example. It’s good because even if their life’s are going good while watching, they will see another perspective and thats what a lot of people lack. Obviously it could depress people but I have faith ig
Great video, glad the algorithm picked you up! I'm kind of tired of it, I think Bojack Horseman was a big reason. It just got very dreary and uninteresting to watch. While I've dealt with depression plenty and I'm the kind to listen to sad music when sad, I get that, but in a comedy it sometimes just feels awkward.
i totally get being tired of it! media can be used as escapism and it’s hard to be used that way when it’s so depressing
can you cover Morel Orel?
I was thinking about that lol
I lowkey hate videos about depression cuz there’s never a solution at the end. But I keep looking in hopes for one
I wouldn’t necessarily say they’re obsessed with depression more or less realism and ideals, and how that reflects on their day-to-day life, as an adult these things tend weigh on us more and release emotions that most children don’t have to go through. It’s one of the things that separates an adult cartoon from a kids cartoon
Love this video, wish F is For Family was on the list though. It’s a bit crude but it really gets in the feels sometimes.
i’ve never seen it! i would’ve loved to include more shows in the video however
@@BenOverIt i highly recommend, very strong bojack horseman vibes. Bill Burr is also the lead VO and writer so that helps a lot.
@BenOverIt f is for family is a really good show, it definitely is crude but the voice acting from everyone and the storylines are worth it! It's been a while since I've seen it, but the entire show delves into family dysfunction/trauma from what I remember so it would've been perfect. Saw someone else mention morel orel as well, maybe there could be a part 2 if you can think of a few more shows?
F is For Family is great. I’m rewatching it
I was about to say. It doesn't look like a lot of people talk about it, though.
I understand where Brian is coming from, I have a noose hanging on my wall for that same reason. Just knowing that theres an easy way out helps me thru that hard shit
I don't know why but recently every 1 in like 7 videos recommended to me are from people with lower subs and views. every time I watch them its like a reality check that high amount of subscribers doesn't indicate that a youtuber is better than someone with less. Great vid👍
"What's wrong with love, friendship, connection?"
Shows: "Nothing, no nothing! but here's my experience to explain to you why it's pointless and why we should live alone and die...."
this was a solid video essay
just pls for the love of christ, stop using the same fucking unlicensed music EVRRY OTHER VIDEO ESSAYIST IS USING
it just gives this generic, run of the mill vibe to what is already a pretty mulled over idea. your video is good, and i enjoyed it. but damn man ain’t even being funny, the second i heard the background song towards the end, it just made me feel like i was just watching a clone of every other video essayist
be unique, pave your own path. you aren’t gonna always be able to find stuff that hasn’t already been done, but you can ALWAYS make it your own. in a climate of everybody biting pre-existing waves so they can surf it on some easy effort, those who put fourth honest effort shine. the blood, sweat and tears of hard work doesn’t always pay off, but at least you’ll know you were yourself in it all. not just a copy of somebody else
1:59
bruh i cant beleive i just yelled at the screen and said "THATS MEEEEEEEEE!"
Does having a pet help? Example having a pet dog, like someone who tackles with depression on and off getting a pet dog or cat help out?
Adult animation try not to be cynical and nihilistic CHALLENGE (IMPOSSIBLE)
these animated shows are being real...but in a comedic way...in cartoon way cos it is not taken serious...
Did I hear Omori OST In the background at certain points? In a Video about depression damn makes sense, that game put me through it.
I think it’s cause it’s up there with the major emotions hate, love, depression/sorrow
Bojack video for all those extra talking points you couldn't do here perhaps? 😢
well i have decided that life is a repetitive hell loop designed especially just for me and i will be taking my life after this comment. good luck to the rest of you guys

I liked this a lot! Glad I found you today
hey thank you! i really appreciate it :)
The mere fact there is a disclaimer in this vid tells me that it's not meant for kids. Why is there a line to cross?
i just meant there’s a line to cross when it comes to covering serious issues in any animation
i am SO GLAD YOU DIDNT SAY UNALIVE😭😭
Archer would’ve been great in this video.
Being an adult has been a pretty depressing experience 🥲
ay u chuld achually do an bocack episode i whud be here for it lmao

No, it's not. It's more common than it used to be, but the overwhelming majority of people will never be depressed.
real question u okay?
Cause its relatable lol, adult life sucks anyways atleast have some shows to relate to XD
this is true!
Tldw: These shows are made by depressed people, for depressed people, and to make it easier for non-depressed people to understand how wacky of an experience it is to constantly battle your inner turmoil

No. It was about being a cynical ass hole. Not every personality needs a clinical diagnosis.

Song in the intro?
thank you ben.
As much as I love adult animation talking about stuff like depression and mental health
My biggest criticism is that a lot of them take the conversation into a rather cynical and nihilistic direction where nothing gets better and you are permanently doomed.
Rick And Morty and Bojack Horseman are extremely guilty of this. I think we need to have more shows that do tackle the seriousness of depression and self loathing but also leave genuine room for growth and climbing out of it.
After watching Bojack Horseman, I felt like I was permanently broken and was unable to heal myself so I just doubled down on my addictions and self loathing. But when I started watching Vinland Saga and reread the manga Berserk, it gave me more of an incentive that my life can turn around as long as I put in work.
As of right now I’m almost 3 months sober and I owe it to both Miura and Yukimura.
People forget how powerful media can be to the human mind.
I love animation ever since i was a kid. I also have severe MDD for I think 9 years now and I also want to point out that depression can be a symptom of another mental disorder for example I have BPD which has parts of depression. Depression to me is not sadness, it's worse, it's feeling numb and hopeless and for me its persistent urges/attempts of SH and S*icide (thanks for not using unalive)
Animation has this weird stigma that it's for kids so it potrays a lot of idealistic simple live laugh love quotes so that's probably why Adult animation has depression as people still have the stigma that depression is an adult thing which is fault cause my depression started in my childhood. Anyways my point is it's the only place for people who grew up with cartoons as a babysitter to figure out about their own depression. These clips like Brians s*icide, anything with Bojack horseman, and other I can't think of right now have helped me not feel alone in my thoughts when I'm having those urges however I feel like depression is still portrayed badly in adult media and still has a long way to go. S*icide jokes are still treated as jokes which I wont police peoples humor but as someone who attempted I'm sick of them just for the sake of being edgy.
I wouldn't say everyone experiences depression differently I would say everyone handles and copes with it differently. Bojack and Morty and Brian I believe are meant to show how not to handle your mental illness and remind them that just because you have depression it's not an excuse it's just an explanation. It's why Bojacks Diane is a better potrayl of depression cause she tries to heal it and not use it to be a jerk unlike Bojack (after the rehab arc I mean).
In my opinion the best potrayl of depression especially in a kids film is Pixars Soul as it does something that these adult animation forms of depression rarely doesn't, it gives hope for people with depression and maybe that is more important in animation for depressed people.
The episode where bojack TW SPOILER ---> dies is truly horrible, it reminds me that in the end, there is probably nothing after death, in the end it’s all for nothing, saying it makes you feel good, thinking about it makes me unable to sleep for days
