Did you know that airplanes have a horn similar to the one you have in your car? It's called the mechanic horn and is relatively loud, as is supposed to get the ground personnel's attention if they aren't connected with their headset to the aircraft. In the air, the horn is pretty pointless.
I hope you enjoyed this video and learned a little aviation fact for today! More to come tomorrow!
Wishing you all the best!
Joe

I'm just imagining a bunch of planes lined up to leave at JFK all honking at each other like it's rush hour traffic.
HAHA! That's good! Boston could have the same reaction...
And start sticking their hands out of the window showing their middle finger!!! 😁😁
@Norran there's a good chance that has already happened.
“c'mon i'm taxiin' here”
Kennedy Steve giving them an earful about it too 😂
This video should have included the sound of the horn.
Yeah I also agree I mean I used it at work when I worked as aircraft mechanic and it's so funny we sometimes just honked it for fun 😂 I even have video honking the horn because I wanted to show it to others 😂😂😂
you do not want i know🤔🙉🙉
@@willemh3319 you do not want I know 🤔 🙉 🙉
In the old days we just used landing lights.
If I'm doing a test run at the hangar, and I am sitting outside in the car, I'll tell them when you need me again, hit the lights
A lot of places still prefer to use the landing lights. Its actually easier to get the ground crew's attention with the lights versus the horn.
I never knew that. Do you have a video of the horn sound? Thanks for sharing.
Someone just honked at my Drone.
Dont let the Indian pilots know about this button. Air travel wont be the same😂
😂😂😂😂
With all the recent close call landings and take offs we seen lately.. I would say that the horn is a necessity.
Agreed. Should be mandatory when crossing active runways, etc.
@@y.s.miller4109 engines are literally louder than a horn, that's why navigation lights exist and is a necessity
@@y.s.miller4109 landing lights are mandatory and strobes which can take up your attention except if your blind
@@Nobi36 they could connect the horn to the engine it self. that would be loud. you will hear that thing coming from over the horizon.
@@sirBrouwer Sorry, what(?)
I’ve always thought an audible horn would have been handy in cases like the Gimli Glider where the pilots noticed people and vehicles on a disused runway and couldn’t warn them (all was well on that occasion but this was down to luck). As mentioned above, it wouldn’t be much use in a runway incursion or similar (eg Tenerife) where planes were operating at take off thrust.
Really, that's a thought right there, Gimli. And with no engines running, I was surprised people got out of the way of the Gimli Glider. That horn would likely have to be mighty in sound compared to other great horns, but you think that ground crews usually wear ear muffs and sometimes earplugs under them, while sometimes in ground vehicles, maybe there's that already for strength. Nope, had no idea that's a thing for ground crews, but I didn't deal with big airplanes as ground crew and mechanic since the early 1980s, and mostly doing engine related work. And they were not the usual big airplanes of today, they were older jets and big warbirds. I don't recall hearing nor repairing a horn other than those which are system and flight warning alarms, and they sound more internally, usually with warning lights on or flashing.
Well you could scare the heck out of Sea Gulls in the air. LOL😂
Bugs Bunny used his, Yosemite Sam ignored the horn, he ended up falling back to earth..
Thankyou again Captain Joe. I love all that you teach us. And i love your accent and your darl lucious hair.
Oh no wonder I thought I heard the General Lee swooping by and honking its classic horn as we were flying by the area in Georgia.
In the 90s, I heard an ATR42 honking to ground personell to percitipate at a conserviation. By this occasion, I learnt that an ATR42 has little lid under the side window instead of a sliding window.
As someone who is a ground crew personnel, I can confirm, the horn is VERY startling when you don’t expect it
Joe you know everything about Airplain Amazing informational thank you so much❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Now add taco truck sound to that horn😂
For a long time I have thought that airplanes - especially small GA aircraft - should have a horn in case an emergency landing is needed near people or ground vehicles. This seems important enough that I would consider having a small portable air horn on hand, like the horns people take to sporting events.
I thought Joe was talking about the Concorde Horn.
I have heard the horn in an aircraft 🔎 quite recently
It does have quite a nice sound
I'd probably still honk it in the air just for giggles😂
It could help deter bird strikes! 🥴😁
Makes sense
The high pressure and speed wouldn't allow that
Ahhh..no😆
The Roar of the Jet Engine during take-off or landing would drown any loud horn can make. It’s only useful during taxi (when it run low rev on only 1 engine) or when parked.
Bro just changed reality
Pov: youre going mach.1 (speed of sound)and you try horn on the aircraft
Is this a realively recent innovation? For those of you who remember the Gimly Glider, the Air Canada Boeing 767 that ran out of fuel and had to crash land on an abandoned air force airstrip there were kids playing on it and because the engines weren't running it glided in silently and the children had no idea this massive plane was about to run them over. Luckily the kids got out of the way at the last moment but that's what the captain was saying was that he could have used a horn in that situation. I wonder if this is what inspired aircraft manufacturers to put horns on planes after that.
Oh joe you almost got me there 😅😂
Don’t forget some horns for equipment cooling warning sound the same but continuously as to alert pilots and mechanics as well as ramp crew
For equipment cooling?🙄
Which aircraft?🤔
I hope your 747 has the General Lee horn if only so you go Yeeehaaaaw every time you take off
Good to know! It would be better if you would have attached the honking in the video
So now im imagining a 737 with a train horn, and the crew using it to jumpscare ground personnel when theyre bored.
737: ua-cam.com/video/fqIBgFPKHrQ/v-deo.html
It sound more like an alarm going off
Yep..definately not like a car😂
Well can we please hear it then?
If it could sound like a Stukka dive bomber siren, then you could have a bit of fun with it on approach over populated areas.
Pointless in air, unless you can play Ride of the Valkyries with it.
didnt know that ❤❤❤
They also have a little light on the nose gear to visually say they need to say something.
Use it for traffic in the air!
Yeah😂😅 you're not gonna hear anything but the birds will🤣
On the next low pass I want the gear that horn 😂
Can u do a vid of what the horn sounds like
Nice
Hey F/O Joe......theres a spot on your uniform shirt
They probably added the horn after the gimli glider incident
Nope😆
Now you have to play what the horn sounds like
737: ua-cam.com/video/fqIBgFPKHrQ/v-deo.html
You should launch the #NowYouKnow !
Planes must honk at the birds flying close by.
What does the horn sound like?
beep beep
@@devinchandrapala3321 no. What does the plane horn sound like.
Its just a little jingle type thing. Not a semi truck or train horn or anything like that. Tells ground crew in the area the pilots want to say something but not more than that.
May we hear how the horn sounds?
What is the aircraft beeper . How does it look like? 😅
Some even have another horn....
A stall horn
How can you make a video about something like that and NOT include a video?!?? Do you expect us to search for that ourself?!?!?
Yeah and trust me it's not a beep beep type of horn. It's extremely loud and definitely gets your attention. I usually hear it if the ground power unexpectedly gets turned off or the communication gets lost during push back or while towing.
Wouldnt call it extremely loud, at least not on the 737NGs or A320s, but maybe my hearing has gotten really bad😆
@@speedbird9313does it sound like someone is tinkling a bell somewhere
@@Babihrse Not really😆

Where is the horn on a cessna 172?...it can be very handy to use instead of 'clear prop'
Is the horn nestled in the nose wheel well?
I asked a question on this matter on Quora.
Good job my car stays on the ground just imagine driving along then hear beep and a second later crash lol
Of course the horn would only work on taxiways and could be used to avoid collisions with cars and other stuff
Very interesting,👋👋👍🇦🇺
You know that you use it to honk the geese.
Now we know!
We have a say in my country that roughly translates to: "(he/she/it) is more useless than an airplane horn"... Little did we know
also equipment cooling warning
What?🤔 No
Could’ve helped in the crash of air Canada 143

New knowledge +1, who want to try it in MSFS or AF2023 like me?
Is not possible to use it in case of birds?
Your also to toot that horn. Before one was to start APU.
Use to scare birds
I'd guess if the 140dB engines aren't doing the job, a 110dB horn wouldn't help. (Reminder, dB is a logarithmic scale. Every 10 dB results in the amplitude doubling.)
well, how else is southwest going to tell delta to taxi with a little more youthful enthusiasm?
How could you tell us this and not show us what it sounds like :(
It’s pointless in the air but can it be used while flying
😅????
Yes, it can.
Easier to just allow it to be used any time rather than specifically tie it into the aviation system and program it not to be used in the air.
How about the rear mirror
Do they have one🤔
I love you
It’s just a horn like your car has. Nothing special. I may have used it in the ATR a time or two when the aircraft ahead of me was going towards the runway at a spectacularly slow speed. While not moving, I’d position the hand mike low in the cockpit so it would pick up the sound of the horn, then simultaneously key the mike on ground control frequency while hitting the horn button a couple of times. Not sure if was heard by the intended recipient or not.
Hit the button!!!!!
Maybe to get the birds out of the way
KLM 542, this is United 786 MOVE THE HECK OUT OF THE RUNWAY YOU'VE BEEN ON THERE FOR 5 MINUTES I'VE HAD TO GO AROUND TWICE ALREADY!
Really? I've never seen or heard a plane honking tho?
It doesnt, this is on a 737:

Not all aircraft have a horn. The Dash 8 doesent..

Interesting fact but you should have included the sound of the horn. You're talking about something that's easily demonstratable. That's just lazy
beep boop beep boop
Why is it pointless in the air?
.
It should help during bumper to bumper traffic, right?

Ahh never mind. You westerners¡! most of the time consider it impolite, unnecessary to honk.

An emirates at 30000ft flew over my house and it horned at a 5000ft Cathay Pacific this happened in perth Australia
