    Good review. Totally agree people think 9mm has recoil of 115 but effectiveness of a 124 +p. I feel like .40 and maybe .45 the practice rounds are closer to the real thing.

      Agreed. There's a lot of variation in 9mm for sure. Even within a grain weight. You can shoot 8 different 115's and they all have a different charge.

    You used to be able to buy 9mm ammo for significantly less than other cals, now 9mm, 40 and 45 cost about the same.

    • @douglasmcnay644
      @douglasmcnay644 2 роки тому

      True, but since handgun calibers are all similar in effectiveness due to modern tech and a 9mm variant of a handgun can hold more rounds than both a .40 and .45, it still is the best choice. The only real valid reason to use say .45 over the other two is strictly for suppression, since most loadings are already subsonic rather than having to buy special subsonic ammo.

    Check out Angel Alvarez. Shot 27 times (head included) by NYPD with 9mm and survived. Or Sgt Tim Gramins, hit a guy 14 times (2 head included) with a .45 and the guy was still alive when EMS got to the scene.
    Some people are just hard to kill, caliber aside.

      We also had a guy who had 15 rounds of .40 dumped into his torso at close range. He was in ICU for months but survived.
      Also had a guy who got shot 6 times in the back (looked like 9mm) and ran like 6 or 7 blocks to the hospital.

      Nobody talks about “luck” or chance. BG driving his car, shoots through the open passenger window with a 22 and hits his intended in the head. Intended drops dead with a bullet in his brain. Another guy rings the bell at the back door of the local PD. Reports he has been shot. Has five (5) 380 slugs in his chest cavity. None of them struck a vital organ. One guy gets shot in the abdomen with a 40SW. He survives. Another gets shot in the abdomen with a 22. The projectile strikes a rib and deflects nicking his aorta. He dies.

    Two thoughts - 1.Thanks to modern ammo 380acp, 9mm, 38spl, 357 mag, 40 S&W, 44 spl, 44 mag, 10mm 45acp are all good self defense rounds. But some, the first three smaller ones, are more practical for every day carry by a civilian. Since before firearms existed , when men carried blades for EDC, man kind discovered that the ideal EDC weighed about two (2) pounds that is 32 oz and preferably less. Don't believe me, check the average weight of EDC swords or daggers. Just remember I'm not talking about military combat weapons.
    So for a comfortable EDC pistol that you are more likely to carry every day it is best to keep it as much under 32 oz as possible. Most gun makers list their guns unloaded weight so add about 1/2 oz per round on average to find approximate loaded weight of the weapon your considering for EDC. The lighter it is the better so long as you can shoot it comfortably and accurately with confidence.
    That said there is something to be said for cost of ammo and it's availability. The 9mm and 38sp are both cheaper per round and often easier to find than most of the other calibers.
    2. I agree, always carry at least one reload and preferably two. Because even the best trained individual might panic and dump the first mag or cylinder of rounds spraying and praying they hit their attacker. I can't tell you how many cases I've worked or read about where the survivor said they didn't think to aim until they were reloading. Sometimes for the second or third time! When they finally remembered to aim they ended the battle in the following one to three shots. Plus some attackers are just very hard to stop, even with several solid hits to vital areas, regardless of caliber. I've read of cases where five or six rounds from a 44 magnums or12 gauge shotguns failed to immediately stop an attacker. Head shots were required. So remember, in a civilian shooting, it is not always the first to shoot but rather the first to aim who generally survives or wins. Practice the Mozambique Drill. Two to the chest one to the head. It was designed for such cases. A good variation of this is one to the pelvic area, one to the chest and one to the head. The pelvic area is the center of gravity, below the "vest" area and the slowest moving part of the body. A hit in the pelvic area is very painful and will often take a target off their feet or at least slow them down.

    Good video as always; I messed up on ammo for sure, I have a lot of 124 ball that I have bought to shoot target with but most of my SD ammo is mix and match Hornady 124 stuff. Finally have gotten some HST +P to test with and hopefully switch over to but it is total non-existent these days. I've done well on not buying gimmick guns but have just bought too many, P30sk, VP9, USP9 and tactical, G17, G19, G43, VP9sk, P365...blah blah blah. I did buy a FN 509 Tac used that had a Apex trigger and came with a X300 and RMR on it for the price of a new one. It may be unfair to call it a gimmick gun but everyone I had shoot it had problems with it and it felt like a toy compared to my HKs. Long story short, I took the RMR and Surefire off it for other projects and traded it in toward a O/U so my wife could go bird hunting with me. Great advice as always man and thank you!

It’s a P-01, or as some call it the 75 compact or whatever. Still need to get a USP at some point but they are so hard to find these days, might have to order one (or a p30, or p2000 for that matter) I’ve gotten the hammer fired DA/SA itch now. Still love my Walther I just haven’t been shooting it as much even though the trigger is right up there with the VP9. Kinda need to standardize brands some day and just stockpile magazines. You’re absolutely right about that. Too many people buy too many different guns and no interchangeability. On your point about ammo selection, I started reloading last year and found that I really love 147gr flat nose. I load it with a shot shell powder that also works for pistol, it’s a bit slower burning and stays subsonic. That ammo is stupid accurate and consistent. But carry ammo I have 124gr HST. Just such a proven round can’t go wrong with it. And easy to find locally! Ok now to finish watching your 45 video next 😁

    Here's why I don't carry a spare mag.
    1. Who has time to reload in a gun fight? I'd rather run if all my 9s failed. I still practice it occasionally but I don't count on it.
    2. It's so unrealistic to need all those rounds when most bad guys are discouraged by the sight of a gun. I don't live in a warzone.
    3. Not convenient. I want less items on my body not more.
    4. Cause I'm not preparing for a gun fight in advance. If I knew I was going to be in one, I'd be grabbing my AR.
    Side note. While you should test your SD ammo at the range, these days it's no longer available so I'm not going to shoot it. Otherwise, I would be.

    • @YeeLeeHaw
      @YeeLeeHaw 3 роки тому +3

      1. It only takes a few seconds to reload and it's a fairly non-complicated process, so if you have gotten to a safer position (most gunfights don't happen in the middle of an open field) you can increase your odds of success. It's also a mental thing to know you have the option to reload if you need it, either in the case you need more bullets or if the gun malfunctions. In the heat of the moment, you will most likely not have a perfect grip on the gun, your movements will not be as precise, etc., so there's a higher risk of having a human-caused malfunction. It's also easier said than done to not empty the magazine if you're panicking (God forbid), so if you have an extra mag with you, you have the option of still have another go at it.
      2. Again same as previously with the mentality and the malfunctions. But it's true, most bad guys will probably run when they face opposition, but if you're both in a position where you can't run you will have to be better than them. It also opens up more ability to spam bullets at them if you know you have plenty and therefore suppress their fire. Criminals also have that option today where they might not be the best shooters, but they can spam bullets at you with today's higher capacity magazines, so if you spam first you will increase the likelihood that they won't get their rounds off first. Disclaimer: I mean spam in the most conservative way, not saying you should just spray and pray in all directions.
      3. Fair point. Life is full of compromises, you can't have everything.
      4. Isn't that's why you carry a gun? If you knew you were going to end up in that situation it would be best to try to avoid going there in the first place, besides you can't carry your AR with you everywhere.

      @Eric M I think you misinterpreted point 4. I'm saying, I'm not going to increase my firepower or rounds unless I knew there was a high chance of needing them. But I don't live in such a dangerous place so I don't see that happening.
