    I started shooting on a G17 and Beretta 92FS (MADE IN ITALY INOX MODEL, BABY!). The G17 became my first CCW and it worked very well for me. When I got a G26 as a gift, I immediately liked it, as the baby Glock's definitely easier to put on and forget as far as concealed carry is concerned. When wearing gym shorts, it's my go-to, as I find it to be very shootable for a sub-compact even without my pinky on the grip and I don't want my gun to be any thinner than somewhere in the double-stack 9mm or HK45 range. The 26's chopped barrel and grip just make things easier, and for my hand size and preference a "holdout gun" shouldn't go any smaller---in caliber or grip length/width. I think of it as a modern snubnose, but one for which you can carry your choice of backup mag along with a 33-rounder in the glove box "just in case." Your mileage may vary.
    Speaking of the HK45, I fell in love with the platform and I have a second full-size 45, this time a tactical (with adjustable rear sight) on the way. I'm thinking that the standard will become my CCW once I acquire a holster and the 45T will be an HD/fun/pigs are flying and the balloon's hanging 10 gun. I noticed someone asked about HK45 holsters for concealment---please keep us informed, as I'm actively researching my (hopefully light-bearing) options!
    A few notes to finish:
    1. I'm glad that I cut my teeth on a DA/SA and a striker-fired pistol, with plenty of revolver practice since. Speaking all three languages is a HUGE asset and will dissolve a lot of nonsense that biased shooters will try to tell you about certain action types or pistols with "bad" triggers. And double-action practice will make you a better shooter, full stop.
    2. A full-size gun is just easier to use (and learn to shoot on). As soft as the Glock 26 and 30 shoot (the latter being a hidden CLASSIC among .45's, Massad Ayoob and Faye Valentine agree), the full-size guns are often easier to properly grasp and shoot. Full-size guns may not fit all body types in all circumstances (especially getting in and out of automobiles or chairs), however. And I think that there is always room for an "oh crap, the risk of my concealment being compromised is higher than normal and I cannot be revealed right now" gun in your arsenal. Sub-compacts and .38 snubbies fill this need well. Also when you're wearing a jammies and not much else.
    3. The metal-frame mad lads had me rolling. CZ-75s are superb 9mms.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

      Light bearing options are a must for me, any gun I have I try to get a CCW holster with and without an X300. But if I can't then I have a duty holster that will accommodate the light. I also cut my teeth on DA/SA which I'm happy I did, I can run damn near anything now a days. Which is nice.
      Thanks for watching and your detailed response. I'm glad you appreciated the metal-framed mad lads portion. I wasn't sure if that would land or not.

    While I don't do it as often as I did since becoming a father, I used to daily a G20SF Gen 4. Most all of my handguns were full size guns and I carried nearly all of them concealed. Like I tell people at my work today, concealed carry is all about what you are willing to put up with. I tend to base my carry based on my attire for the day as for example when it's summer time here in my state and it's 101 with 100% humidity making it feel like 108+, you're likely to be in shorts and a light shirt so you probably aren't going to CCW a gun like a Sig P226.
    But, for nearly the rest of the year one could get away with loads of things. For starters, most people are utterly oblivious to their surroundings. Their heads are up their phones so far they aren't looking at you. I know some people worry too much about printing or whichever but like I said, nobody notices but you. Now if it's a comfort factor I can understand but if you're willing to tote a full size gun, you'd be willing to wear the clothes, the belt, and whatever else it takes to accomplish the task without standing out like a sore thumb.
    They simply are just more comfortable for most shooters, provided there's no issues with their hand sizes. They control recoil better, they hold more rounds typically, and in a world of compromises the handgun is one of the biggest compromises to begin with, so why not have as many advantages as one can get out of one? It's why I've never shied away from larger size guns, but I can admit there are times and places the smaller guns have merit. But even with smaller guns, there comes a point where it's too small and you're either giving up performance, reliability, comfort, or some other factor that's usually not worth the trade off. I get mocked sometimes because I admit to carrying larger sized revolvers. I get told how 6 or 7 rounds isn't enough when a full size gun like a G17 holds 17. But... I can hit my mark out to 40 yards easily with that revolver on a consistent basis, the level of power in my cartridges can range from weak target loads up to stout hunting or personal defense loads. Then they pull out a Ruger LCP that I'm sure they shot like twice before they bruised their knuckle and put it away.
    Not that tiny guns like that can't still get the job done but most people don't practice regularly with tools like that to know their limitations. I always push my guns to know these. If I didn't tell somebody I had it on me, I have a holster for my Taurus Raging Judge Magnum with a 6 1/2 inch barrel that can be carried IWB. It's not as noticeable as you'd think despite the bulk. Just again goes to show, what we're willing to put up with.

The only polymer framed one I've carried was a USP in 9mm during the winter one year. All have been pretty concealable depending on clothing (loose sweaters help a lot). Agreed on the M17/M18. I was an early adopter for the Sig P320. Got it circa 2015-ish. Out of the clear blue sky it began having failure to extract issues with less than 500 rounds doen the pipe. Troubleshot it down to a chipped extractor.
    And honestly it didn't do anything better than my Glocks. Replaced the extractor and promptly sold it off.

    I agree. Got away from small ccw guns my hands are too big for a 365. Smallest gun I carry is a Glock 48 for when I’m working out or something along those lines because it’s lighter and thinner. Don’t see any point in the 43x. Even still the grip for the 48 feels a little too thin for my hands. I want a 19mos with trijicon rmr. My duty gun is a 17mos with rmr and I carry that concealed or a g22 gen4 as well. The length of the grip with the optic does print sometimes wither the 17 so that’s why I want the 19. I’ve become a firm believer in red dots for pistols once my agency transitioned to 17s with rmr. I’ve ran many drills with it vs just irons and It allows me to be much faster and maintaining accuracy. We’ve had a couple deputies make headshots in stressful situations one being a hostage situation. Im sold on g17 or 19 with an optic.

    82 years old, carrying 24/7 since 1962. Shot three men, killed one. Retired Fed. Gonna share some weird shit here: My EDC is an out-of-production all steel, DA/SA double stack .45 ACP. Why? MyAstra A-80 fits my hand like a glove, the weight (and there is considerable) mitigates recoil and in combination with the all-steel makes for excellent pistol-whipping when required. The European mag release if fine with me. I've never needed more than one shot per perp and doubt I will be confronted with more than ten of them at once. The double-Action negates the need for other safeties-which is nice and when carried in cross-draw (as I do) in a good pancake holster rides all day without discomfort.
    I love my Glock 21, but it stays in my chair at home (every geezer has HIS chair). Like my Niners, but not to carry.Oh, one other thing, just to confirm in your mind that I'm an idiot: I carry only ball 230 grain. I'm all about penetration.

The rear sight pops off like Archer's tone nails in the cancer episodes. They're absolutely awful, I hate that I have to rely on them. I can carry a full size 1911/2011 with the x300, P226 with x300, etc. Might as well carry what I shoot really well and can conceal well. I just got a stronger belt and its fine. Funny enough, I used to hate Glocks. Couldn’t stand them. Had 2 17 Gen 4s and a Gen 3 19. I know, “Gen 3 GoLd StAnDaRd ThO!?!”. Sold them all, swore them off for a long time, until the latest Gen 5 came out, (more like Gen 5.5). Worked at a gunshop, found a G19 Gen 5 blue label, great deal on top of getting it at cost. Had our guy throw on a pair of Trijicon HD green/yellow (shoulda went orange, me feel smrt). A G45 with an OEM extended slide lock came in, asked bossman if I could swap my Vickers for it, he obliged, total win. Fast forward a year and some change later, it’s easily one of my favorite pistols. I had some growing pains with Glocks over the years, but I’m glad I got over it. Honestly it feels weird if I pick up anything else.

    • @navyman8903
      @navyman8903  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah man the Gen 5.5 changed the Glock game for me honestly. I also love how the 17 shoots. The 45 and or 19x is still a process for me. The 5.5 G19 also shoots pretty smooth. I think loving the 17 so hard is what's messing up the 45 for me if that makes sense. The 19 is a 19, so my brain sets to the slide speed it has. But my big dumb idiot brain can't get the 17 frame with the 19 slide. Maybe one day.

    • @DocMitchell69
      @DocMitchell69 2 роки тому

      @@navyman8903 So I’ll be honest, when I first heard of the 19X when it came out, I was like “19 slide on 17 frame? That sounds totally stupid.” But then the 45 came out and I said “oh that’s actually not bad.” I think maybe the FDE just bothered me, I was stationed in J-Vegas and got so sick of seeing FDE. FDE Guns, gear, clothes, etc. I couldn’t escape it. But I warmed up to it. But for sure, the Gen 5.5 was a huge game changer for me, I used to carry a 92FS 24/7, so the 19 was a huge relief on my hip. Definitely going for a 17 sometime soon, I really think this is what the Gen 4 should’ve been.

    What you're saying makes real sense. I own a sig p365 and a HK P30L. love me some full size HK for sure. But, places such as hospitals and others were there is constant physical violence against employees by drunks , druggies, and the seriously mentally ill have issues. Most hospitals have a no gun and knife policy, on the premises, policy.
    Truth is, some nurses, doctors, and others choose to carry small firearms concealed regardless. Just in case police, or security is unable to get too the scene in time. Hospitals are just one example.
    As great as a HKP30L is , one is not going to be able to conceal it size at work. For this reason, weapons like the p365 and others are game changers. It is a pretty well established fact in mechanical engineering that making something smaller makes it more finicky and less reliable. This concept applies to firearms as well. The timing on a sub-compact has to be more precise than on a compact, and on a compact more so than on a full size, because the slide travel is less and the recoil spring and guide rod are shorter. So a full size gun will almost always be more reliable than a smaller version of the same gun. How much so and whether that matters is something you have to decide for yourself. A full size gun is almost always more ergonomic than a compact or subcompact. This really matters to some of us. I am 6'6" and 250 pounds. I have big hands. I don't like my pinky hanging off the bottom of the grip, and I don't like feeling like I might shoot my own finger off if my grip shifts slightly under duress because the barrel is so short I can easily get my support hand index finger over the end of it. If you say this is only a training issue, you obviously are not very familiar with Mr. Murphy and how fucked up things can get when the shit hits the fan. Trust me, you're not John-fucking-Wick. Having a gun that is easy to shoot well and works with you might save your life, and this is where sub-compacts fail. They are made to be carried and not shot, so God forbid you actually have to use them, they make it really difficult. A full size gun has every functional advantage. It is more reliable, more ergonomic, has greater capacity, and maybe even a slight ballistic advantage. The only disadvantage is that they are bigger, and most people are pussies. My Glock 20 weighs about 2.5 pounds. That is about 1% of my body weight, if this former Marine grunt did his math correctly. If a grown man can't carry 1% of his body weight on his center of mass, he is probably a bitch and has bigger problems than concealed carry guns. Our grandpas all carried S&W revolvers and 1911s. These days we have this born-to-lose bed wetting soy-fed weak bodies complaining if their sub-compact weighs more than their triple caramel macchiato. Eat a steak. Reach down and grab that shriveled fleshy patch where your nuts are supposed to be and remember what it is to be a man. Then get a decent belt and holster, and carry a real fucking gun.

      Love me some USP45. The P2ksk and the P30sk are the only sub compacts I like.

    I think the main issue is still tradeoff in terms of ease of carry and ease of use. I'm not very big, so carrying a full size would be extremely difficult except in harsh winter scenarios. However, I still try to stay away from the micro-ultra-lights because they just don't seem as reliable, durable, accurate, and easy to grab and deploy as bigger models.
    For me, it's hard to find the right balance of everything, but I find myself going time and time again to HK simply because of their sheer reliability, durability, and the paddle magazine release. The Subcompact p30sk works great for this reason, although I would still prefer HK release a single stack 9mm, even if it came at the cost of less rounds. Because again, in my philosophy reliability and durability are paramount over everything else, and I just don't trust the flimsy sig 365s and hellcats. I think the fixation on round count and super tiny size is really unhealthy, and we should put priority once again on a well designed well balanced platform.

      Given those restrictions I think you did well. The P30 carries well for me, and I do have to dress around it, and the G17/P30L. It's worth it for me, but I get what you're saying.

      I am 5 foot 4 and carry the same gun for work as my ccw. A full size glock 21 or hk45, unless I work where I have to carry a 9mm, then it's usually a beretta or a p30. I also live in Florida so I wear the bear minimum of clothes and never had an issue in any way carrying a full size handgun.

    Could you do a video on tips and tricks on making carrying full-sized pistol more comfortable to conceal carry? I currently EDC an M18 and love it but I'd like to hear if you have any advice on making full-sized carry more comfortable.

    I've gone back and forth between full size and compact and subcompact. I find that full size grips leave a little printing spot on me whereas compact (G19 size) doesn't. So it's situational. If I'm at work where I want 0% printing no matter what, I go compact. So, realistically, that's most of the time nowadays.

      That's understandable too. You have to have options and the right tool for the job. But I've seen dudes in hoodie weather make an argument for carrying a single stack micro 9 when they could easily do more. So it's a balance of requirements and laziness. (Not saying the laziness applies to you, just in general).

    CZ master race lol. I love my P-06. Steel frame, hammer fired .40 as I swear it was designed by someone with my exact hands. Used to conceal it everywhere until I figured out just how rare they are. Now it's a range toy, but my new carry is a Tanfoglio (Italian CZ clone) in 10mm so now I have more power with a way less rare pistol. Plus it fits my hand the same so win/win for me.

    I CCW an HK VP9 Tactical. My eyes are bad and need a red dot. I would only carry a single stack or 1.5 stack as a backup or in certain situations where I have to be ultra discreet. The belt and holster make a difference. As I am a little larger person, a Columbia shirt worn untucked does the trick for me. No printing at all.

    P365 cuz the real balance for me is "there's a 99.999% chance this thing is never leaving the holster, I shoot it well enough, and I'm never gonna leave it at home and don't need to dress around it because it's so damn small"

    I've recently been shooting and carrying the M&P 2.0 full size. The fullsize grip on that gun seems to conceal better for me when carried appendix over a G17. I picked up the metal frame version the other day and honestly it's still light enough to be carried and has a stupid nice trigger.
