- Throughout the years there have been many, many, MANY lip syncs on RuPaul's Drag Race, most of the time one drag queen wins and the other sashays away, and everybody moves on. But sometimes, the results of these lip syncs get fans in a frenzy.
Today we're going to talk about 10 Lip Syncs that results left fans scratching their heads and yelling RIGGED from all stars seasons to older seasons, and the most recent Season 14.

I remember Trixie saying on unhhh that when they announced that Pearl stayed over her, she said "thank god we are both staying" because she was that confident that she won that lip sync lol

Honestly my favorite thing about Jaida is that she's so poised and beautiful but she's also absolutely unhinged and hilarious and unapologetically herself and she will always be my favorite winner because of it.
On RuPauls old podcast him and Michelle said that in the Trixie vs Pearl lip sync that Pearl was channeling Debbie Harry more to them and that’s why she won, then they found out Debbie Harry actually preferred Trixie’s lol!
I believe this is 100% why she was there to judge the next season for her song.

Hell, same kinda goes for Pearl and Fame, except they both should've gone home there. No shade to Pearl or Fame though. They're unbelievably talented, and Pearl especially is so goddamn funny.

Favorite drag race moment regarding lip sync rigging: when Jinkx says in interviews “it doesn’t matter if production changed the song for me, I was always gonna beat detox in a lip sync” 😂 THAT’s the confidence of a winner!

Tbh, i think she could’ve done just fine in Free Your Mind. She could camp it up and still outshine Detox.
She was always going to win because the producers clearly wanted to.

Detox would've still lost, regardless of the song. She had already been in the bottom multiple times by that point, and Jinkx had a better track record.
Phi Phi winning and sending home Alyssa would've been so iconic because then the story of Alyssa coming back and sending home phi phi would've been even more satisfying lol

AS2 had a couple production mistakes that would have made it even more amazing. One was this, and another is that they never made a member of Rolaskatox send one of the other two home. That would have been simply peak Drag Race.

The most upsetting one for me is probably the Rebecca vs Jade lip sync. For performing the very first split on the show perfectly, then losing…? Alright Mary
and i totally get that fashion expectations were understandably a lot lower back then but now I'm just realizing that Rebecca wore the same look that she did during her promo. And it isn't even like a notable fashion statement either, it's just a $12 Ross dress.
Mine is Aquaria's. I liked Eureka in all of her seasons and I thought she would make a great winner. Aquaria is the least liked winner, I think.

Kerri’s whole run was so confusing. She was placed in the bottom when she didn’t deserve to be, then won the lip sync when she clearly did worse. Then had a week she should’ve been in the bottom but was safe. Then she was placed in the bottom again when she (arguably, this one is less clear) didn’t deserve to be, then did better in the lip sync (I’m sorry but Jasmine was a complete mess in that lip sync), and then went home. None of the choices made sense 😭
I agree completely. They definitely didn’t know what they wanted with Kerri.
She wasn't a contender. She only brought beauty and that tender moment with Jasmine on Untucked.
I know! It’s hard to talk about because it wouldn’t have been fair for Kerri to go home in a challenge she did well in but it’s definitely not fair for Alyssa Hunter to go home when she won that lipsync!

From what I’ve heard, DENALI’s dress (that Olivia gave her) had a reveal to slip into a leotard, similar to what Olivia had for her entrance outfit. Yet I think she knew the producers didn’t care about her, so she didn’t activate it and pretty much threw the lip-sync.

Might be controversial but S12: Jackie versus Widow should've been a double shantay. Maybe production felt Widow's storyline had come to an end and judges said she did poorly in the debate, but if we're ✨solely✨ judging the lip sync, both queens emoted well, looked beautiful, and knew the lyrics.

I think the wirdest part of Trixie vs Pearl is that the only confessional is Katya saying "Trixie has this, she is doing what she's supposed to" which is super similar to what Trixie said during "Twist of Fate". Granted, of course Katya did a lot better, but I find it bizarre that a producer would put a confessional that we can agree with just to complete ignore it
The one that still irks me to this day is the Nina vs Silky lipsync. 'No Scrubs' is one of my favorite songs and it was treated so disrespectfully 😭💀. The elimination was just like pouring salt on a wound 😤

IMO: Crystal did beat Jackie in that lip sync, as soon as Jackie took her shoes off, I knew that she was going home.
Jackie was not in rhythm with the song. Both did camp, but Jackie’s camp was messy and awkward
100% agree. Jackie’s style of lipsyncing was so cringe and messy. Lots of ppl love her Kill The Lights performance but it shouldn’t have been a double save! Heidi won that easy.

100% agree. I am shook some people think that this was rigged and Jackie was robbed. If anything, Jackie had gotten saved earlier in the season, when Heidi clearly won Kill the Lights.

Alaska deserved to win the whole season, but that episode was sus to me.
Alyssa Hunter hurts me the most, because it seems to have no small amount of bigotry in it. I'd root more strongly for Trixie (an equally clearcut case), except she's so much come out on top since then, and I feel Pearl's been wronged by WOW in other ways. It's also weird to me that being wronged by the show can make a queen's career while being unfairly favored by the show can do a lot to ruin it.

I always thought Trinity's bad cartwheel was a humorous nod to the scene earlier in the episode when they try to put cartwheels into the choreo and most of the queens completely fail at it. She literally says that she has never done a cartwheel before, and when she pulls that busted wheel out in the final lipsync you can see the judges cracking up.
The worst one probably I can think of is Ivy-Elise vs. The Countess on Holland.

Like with Phoenix vs Delta's lipsync, I always thought Phoenix's moves were actually from Gaga's music video.
The very first time I rewatched this season, I immediately watched the Gaga video and... no. None of them. And if she did, then why cut them out if you're going to show that confessional. I don't even understand why they put that in. Other than to make us dislike India for being full of it and making stuff up, as usual.

About Nina and Silky, I also find it strange that Nina was in the bottom two. They asked all the girls and they all agreed it was either Silky or Yvie. They wanted to juice their rivalry and maybe have a new Yvie vs Brooklyn in the finale, because their lipsync became iconic.
It’s just the girls opinion, Yvie slayed that challenge. It was the right bottom 2.
nina only got sent home to be miss congeniality as you dont have a congeniality in top 4 or in that season, top5

Trixie also didn't fit into the overarching storyline they wanted to tell for season 7, which was pitting "older" (Ginger was literally 29 lmao) campy glam/comedy queens vs young aesthetic-focused fashion queens. Same thing goes for Jaidynn. They were both on the "young" side, yet fit in more with the "old" side, Jaidynn being more traditionally glamorous and Trixie being super camp

Alyssa Hunter going home after that lip sync was so wild to me. Like not only did she win, she absolutely killed the lip sync, fully proving she should be there. She could have been a frontrunner imo.

It definitely could have been, but if you had to make a decision, i think Priyanka was the clear winner. Love Kiara but by the end she was getting a little sloppy and doing moves that felt like she was doing them just for the sake of doing them

Lowkey Tamisha did a lot better than Candy in their lip sync. But Candy was given like 6 passes to go straight to the finale in that season, so
Trixie had the last laugh in the end. After Ru she is the most famous, successful queen to come out of drag race so far.

The Alyssa lipsync was the one that took me out, she’s a queen from my hometown and I’ve been wanting her on drag race for years. I knew that she would be bringing the most sickening looks and I know most people didn’t get the chance to know her and pin her up in their top 4 placements when the cast was first announced but I tell you I was really gunning for her to win the whole thing. I had a bad feeling about episode 4 bc it’s the same episode Yara went home on in AS6 and I had a feeling that Alyssa would either be a finalist or go home on Ep. 4 and the second one happened. I mean I’m glad everyone recognizes how amazing she is but I’m so sad that the show put no effort in getting to know her. If Jessica Wild is on AS8 and gets done dirty I really don’t know how I will cope.
It's yet another example of the ESL/bilingual/trilingual queens getting shafted. I noticed it with Yara in AS6, too, and she was a big name and had already won a challenge. It's like...they don't know how to judge queens who don't have English as their dominant language, and so they put them in the bottom when they have enough of an argument to do so.
I'm ESL and I love and dread seeing them on, because I know they often get send home early or their accent being the butt of the joke.

alyssa went home bc she just wasn’t good tv. from the moment she stepped in the workroom its obvious production was trying to give her the villain edit but she wasn’t giving them enough material so they would rather send her home bc kerri had more storyline potential
This just reminded me that the makeover episode of S11 could've been so good... but it was just so, so bad. Putting it in a position where randomly only six of the nine eliminated queens reappear (rude!). Vanjie being absolutely robbed of a win (you could not recognize Ariel AT ALL, the family resemblance was uncanny). And then the lipsync... which, to be absolutely fair, should've been 100% a double sashay, regardless of the production's plans.

And honestly I think a double sashay would’ve worked narratively too. Like I know they wanted Silky at the end, but to have Silky and Yvie’s rivalry end with Silky being intimidated after Yvie and Brooke have a double shantay to one of the all-time greatest lip syncs, then going home in a very mediocre double sashay feels like a satisfying conclusion to that rivalry arc. Especially now that we know Silky went on to be an all time great lip sync assassin in all stars, but hindsight is 20/20 and all that.

I don't think a fall should mean you lose. If you fall giving a more dynamic lipsync, and get right back up and keep serving, you should win over someone giving less. Edit: Goes for Farrah Moan's talent show too.

Alaska vs Phiphi was the worst. Like Alaska didn’t even deserve to be in the top bc she FLOPPED the runway’s assignment, plus they both chose Alyssa so it would’ve been the same. And then they have the nerve of portraying PhiPhi as this horrible villain for choosing Alyssa when SHE DIDN’T EVEN GET TO ELIMINATE HER.
Alaska won because she was favored to win the season. The more wins they can give her, the stronger she looks next to everyone else, no matter how strong they are.
Alyssa was going home regardless, and they knew they had their chance to make Phi Phi look worse by prompting her to share her thoughts in the Workroom right after.
May as well buff up Alaska and keep the story going.

Could just be me but I think the Rajah vs Scarlet Envy lip sync should be on this list. When all the girls were dragging Scarlet saying she couldn’t dance, was underwhelming and chose her to go home and she delivers a lip sync that proves them all wrong! However, still gets sent home anyways is such disappointing storyline potential wasted. They kept Rajah for the drama I believe
My sister screamed when she lost. I think that Ru just wasn't in the mood for gimics that day or something because Scarlet relied on that immediately and Rajah kept it old school

Idk lol. They almost did the Max Edit with her "Oh she does better than we thought, she has gotta got now".
Jackie’s performance in firework was one of my all time favorite and the most moving lip syncs of all time and I’ll die on this hill

Alaska is my favorite queen but even I agree that Phi Phi absolutely killed that lipsync and I don't understand how Alaska won. Sometimes it feels like it has less to do with the performance and more to do with pulling a shtick to surprise Ru or make her laugh
to be honest alyssa did win the lip sync againsty kerri; however, i was more into kerri at the time so i was biased and blind. i tried hard to use the failed money gun against alyssa but even with that fail she still won.

I wanna say that there was definitely some editing choices made to make the money gun fumble seem way worse than it was in reality. Like the way they framed it and focused on it, I remember, at the time my heart just dropped and I was flooded by like this strong feeling of second hand embarrassment and I thought "oh, she definitely lost the lip sync", when really, she did not.
samee, and now i realise that 2 confessionals during a lipsync being about a machine gun suggest them making it a BIG deal and it wasnt whatsoever (i even posted my comment on the lipsync video of kerri winning and deleted it only a while ago when i realise im just trying to defend kerri not the truth), i was also scared she would get hate and im SOOO glad ppl saw her for who she rly is
Oh of what you listed here- Trixie aaaate Pearl in season 7, hands down. Ru said outright that she’d wanted to send Pearl home for her attitude but did t because production liked her arch and that she was the first really “hot” boy out of drag and fans would wanna see more of her. Matter of opinion but young Trixie in her boy clothes I thought was just as cute tbh, but I’m probs in the minority on that lol. That said, Allstars season 3 it very much looked like Kennedy won the final lip sync against Trixie- but it’s hard to gauge the “face”intensity and lip sync quality from home. From the sofa the queen doing the most flips and best choreography looks like the winner every time but it’s drag, not gymnastics, so there’s a lot of room for interpretation.
You're alleging riggory, but RuPaul never says the bottom two contestants are on even footing when they enter the lip sync. He just says "this is your last chance to impress me and save yourself from elimination. Good luck and don't eff it up". So someone could win a lip sync and still not "impress" Ru enough for her to keep them.
This. I don’t think that if you win the lipsync it immediately means you get to stay. If the Queen was pretty much out the door, they can potentially save themselves with a PHENOMENAL lip sync, but they’re probably going to go home, even if they “win” the lip sync. That’s not what happened with all of these lip syncs, but a lot of people do seem to believe that winning the lip sync automatically means you’re staying.

Totally. There were some Queens who went in the Bottom with a 90% Chance of going home already, bc it was their 3rd time or something...and at this point you better do 2 flips through burning hoops and hit every beat to justify staying over someone has been in the Bottom once.

in all stars 3, the returning queens deserved to win for sitting on a secret. it was wayyyy better than the other song.

Season 11 definitely had a missed opportunity by not putting Yvie in the bottom with Silky. Every other queen on the runway said either of the Queens should go home, they had an ongoing rivalry, and there was that line from Silky where she said she would send Yvie home
For season 12, they should have really had Crystal win the makeover and Jackie win the one woman show challenge. Then have them both stay (they could have edited it that way like the double crowning on AS4). Both would have had a win and a couple of flop weeks. Alongside Jaida and Gigi, they would have made for a very solid Top 4.
Yes, HOW did Crystal not win the makeover? Do not get me wrong I love Jaida and her makeover was so beautiful, but Crystals oh my god, it was genius. It was so evenly matched between her and her makeover partner, the family resemblance was clear as day, and on top of that, so original! But I am glad jaida won, because she defo needed another win to justifiably win the whole season probably, and I’m glad she did.

I want to give my 2 cents on DeLa vs Bebe. Bebe was DESTROYING that lipsync and the moment she took her wig off was the climax of the song. She was on the very first season of the show and when she was on the show it was almost had this feeling of "you're here to compete in drag so stay in drag" and that's why we don't get too many wig removals in the earlier seasons. When they happened in the earlier seasons it's a very powerful moment as opposed to now where it's seen as just a basic flop move. It used to represent a queen losing the drag illusion, putting them in a very vulnerable state .See: Shannel losing her headpiece put perservering through the lipsync, and Yara breaking down on stage while lipsyncing against Alexis. Losing your wig used to be a much more powerful thing to happen because it showed that the queens were real people and not just these charicatures. Because Bebe is from the older seasons and is from the older school of drag (and I think also does not really watch drag race) taking her wig off during the lipsync against DeLa was supposed to mean so much more than the edit let it. Instead of this vulnerability that Bebe was trying to show it was written off as a queen being out of touch with drag race. This is what Jasmine Masters meant when she said "RuPaul's Drag Race done fucked up drag".

One comment on the first lipsync: while I agree mostly that Jade devoured that lip sync and that they kept Rebecca for being good TV, Jade also grabbed her crotch at one point during the lip sync. And while Drag Race is VERY inconsistent in reinforcing “Drag is not a contact sport”, I do think this helped decide it.

Latrice vs. Mo, Latrice was fully winning the first half of the lip sync. From Mo's wig reveal to the orange hair, she really ramped it up and was killing the second half. At the very end, they were pretty even. So to me it was a double shantay... But also he said he wasn't putting double shantays on the list lol.

Jade was too guarded and reserved which RuPaul mentioned to her in the previous episode. After Akashia was eliminated Rebecca became tbe villain. Jade would've gone home regardless. Plus in the finale, the judges did admit that they were bias in keeping Rebecca so long because of how pretty she was.
The only two I disagree with are Jackie vs Crystal and Bebe vs Ben. I think The J vs C honestly could've been either of them or a double stay as it was so good! I don't see it as being so unfair it's rigged. And I think bebe did the wig removal as a heartfelt meaningful moment and Ru just didn't take it like that.
I actually have the sneaking suspicion that they were PLANNING on having a top 3 in Season 10 just to differentiate from Season 9 and that they knew Kameron was going to slay ANY lip sync and end up in the top 2, but not want to crown her. The finale song bang bang also has three different parts in the song!
I never thought of it that way, that makes sense. If you look at Aquaria's face right before Ru announces the double shantay, you can tell she knows she lost because she looks genuinely terrified and upset; and then in shock when she found out she was staying. And then her winner speech mentions getting a second chance, and for her I think that could only allude to what just happened. I think they really wanted Aquaria to win, so they kept her for the final round. I love her
Re: Delta vs. Phoenix. I'm surprised it hasnt been mentioned that Phoenix took off her shoes! That's almost always an automatic loss.
Crystal and Jackie could have been a double shantay had SP been put in the bottom (deservingly) and eliminated by Jackie (deservingly). So there could still have been a top 4
Apparently they did film a double shantay anyway, I never understood why they didn't use that result after the disqualification. It wasn't the best lipsync overall but they were both pretty even.

Silky had 1 Runway slipup? Every Runway was a slip up for Silky. No make up under her mask look,Evilynn in Fish makeup not to mention I'll fitting padding and torn nylons. Silky making it too the finals with no fan following makes absolutely no sense especially when someone like Vanessa is criticized all season long. She would have made an awesome finalist.

Weirdly I really liked Rebecca Glasscock. She was pretty, had a very pedestrian sense of style, but she just had that 'something'. She had a strong presence, and she had it without being incredibly opinionated and egotistical like Shannel. And I really liked Shannel.
I loved the fact she just stopped caring and just stayed in her own lane and made it to third place.
Such a shame Javier gave up drag. Would have been great to see the glow up if he'd have continued on an upward trajectory.

The most controversial lip sync result, in my opinion, was Alexis Michelle Vs. Farrah Moan to Dolly Parton's country song Baby I'm Burning. I think Farrah totally won that lip sync. I think the producers told her and Peppermint during the Michelle Visage Roast episode, "If you don't win this challenge, then this is your last challenge. We don't care how you do in the lip sync." If they were told that, it went unaired
i don't really remember the Delta/Phoenix lipsync, but i do remember RuPaul telling Delta on the podcast how much he loves to watch her lipsync... the only other queen i recall ever getting that level of love from Ru when it comes to performance is Jorgeous.
I always love when people point out the jinx vs. detox lip synch as if detox would’ve definitely won. She was in the bottom 3 times that season and she the one trick with her lip movement that she did again. Yeah the song jinx did very well but she would’ve beat detox at any other song too.
To me Aquaria still won against Eureka. A fall doesn't mean you automatically lost. Aquaria was giving choreography while Eureka does her one and only move, the high kick, and walks from left to right while undressing.

Disagree on your point about production wanting a fashion queen to win season 7. That season was built for Ginger Minj to win. There were so many god damn acting challenges and so few design/runway challenges. If they wanted to favour the fashion queens, why not throw in more design and less acting. Meanwhile, Ginger is fantastic at campery and acting. I think production really wanted a big girl to win, which had been a big complaint from fans up to that point and even still today with no crowned big girl! I think Ginger didn't win because she didn't win over fans, they really didn't like her compared to Violet, and given the show was getting such poor criticism, I think production decided to appease the fans and crown the fan favourite over Ginger.
Fans didn't like Violet, either. Everyone in the top 4 was hated. They were clearly gonna give the win to Ginger, but she flopped it with the fans, so they switched to Pearl, but she got on Ru's bad side. Violet just happened to be standing nearby.

My tinfoil hat idiot theory: they were gonna crown Roxxxy (rudemption sells well), have Alaska be a villain, and have Detox in third. Then Roxxxy, unfortunately, wasn't doing great in the challenges, and Katya came out of relatively fucking nowhere. Production expected RoLaskaTox to dominate utterly and did not remotely expect the season seven freak-off-the-leash to actually do well enough that they couldn't edit her poorly.
So they just handed all of Katya's lipsync wins to Alaska, expecting her to eventually slip up so they could send her home and have a RoLaskaTox top three.
Which leads directly to the Alaska tantrum landing her at the win. Production had a moment to latch onto and say "see that, she wants it so badly she lost her composure". So they could safely lose Roxxxy and avoid the embarrassment of eliminating one of the ultimate fan favorites after denying her multiple deserved wins.

It would certainly align with AS seasons being primed for a fan favorite. While Alaska was loved I think production saw that they could repeat Jinx’s storyline
I always believe that lip syncs are only exactly what Ru says: a Last Chance to save yourself. So if you’re going into it the most disliked, or did a poor job that week, whatever, you’re going to have to do amazingly well AND your rival is going to have to do badly in order to have even a chance at staying. If you’re both closer to each other then maybe it would just be whoever is better. I think we mostly get that but sometimes we look at the winner and just have to double take when the other queen stays, because that’s when it’s not fair and we instinctively know.
I think Mimi and Chad could have been spoken about here. Probably Simone vs Kandy or most of the season 13 episode 1 lipsyncs. And obviously now that we are after AS7 - kinda whole season could have been discussed, as well.
Actually Jades main storyline of the 1st season was the supposedly enormous "meaty tuck".
What people seem to want to forget is that the lip sync is your last stitch effort to save yourself. Meaning . . . Out of the two Ru had made a decision before the lip sync. So you can “beat” someone in the lip sync but if it is not amazing you can still go home.

trixxie is the biggest star that gave the show (along with miss fame based on what they built after drag drag race, but nobody is prepared for this conversation) but at that moment she was not giving anything, instead pearl is the soul of de that season, make any excuse you want (being handsome, being white and thin) but Perla was the most interesting of the cast and if she didn't get more things it's because of her fight with ru that to this day takes its toll
not to mention that trixxie is very bad at the format, she works out of it

Idk if you’ve seen Holland but in season 2 The Countess clearly loses against Ivy but Fred says he thought the lip sync was bad so he keeps The Countess because she had a better track record… The Countess was also Fred’s makeup artist for season 1 and shouldn’t have been allowed to compete.

The only thing that held Trixie back in that lip sync for me is that she didn't change up anything in her performance when it got to the Big Freedia part of the song. She did have really cool moments though (and I didn't find Shangela's fat suit schtick quite as funny as Ru did). To me her best is Wrecking Ball!
