One of the most controversial twists in RuPaul's Drag Race herstory was the lip sync assassin twist first introduced on All Stars 5. The winning all star each week has to win a lip sync against a lip sync assassin from seasons past in order to win $10,000 and eliminate one of their fellow competitors. But right from the jump there were lots of issues pointed out about this twist. Despite the fandom's reactions however; the twist would go on to appear on two more season, All Stars 6, where it was universally acclaimed to be much better, and providing better lip syncs. But also on All Stars 8, where the twist was yet again chastised by fans.
We've had a myriad of iconic lip syncers brought back for this twist like Laganja Estranja, Coco Montrese, Aja Lebeija, Manila Luzon, and more. But also some very questionable queens were brought back and deemed a "lip sync assassin" such as Nicky Doll, Jessica Wild, Shannel, and more. With such a wonky system, I thought today we'd rank all 27 assassins how they performed and used their return.

I still think the best course of action wouldve been to give the assassin $5,000 if they won and then roll the other $5,000 into the next week. That way everyone has the incentive to go all out.
i mean, i’d imagine they already get a pretty nice booking fee and the opportunity to reintroduce themselves to an audience in a low-stakes way, i think rolling over the whole $10,000 is better for the contestants

My favourite lip sync assassin moment was when Sugar and Spice appeared and everyone thought they would be lip syncing together against Aiden Zhane but it turns out that they were only on set because they were hot and bored, and the real lip sync assassin was Kahmora Hall, who won the lip sync because Aiden was distracted by Jujubee doing a better job lip syncing in the shadows to ‘Someone Like You’ by Adele.

The song choice really has an affect on the assassin. Giving Kennedy a slow country song instead of a dancing song, Manila getting a sexy song instead of camp, Kameron getting a low tempo song instead of a dancing song. I wish these queens would've gotten a redo.
Okay the fact we haven't had Darienne Lake, Nina Bonina Brown or Tayce as lipsync assassins yet is a crime

One thing about the Roxy Andrews lip sync is that Roxy said that they where going to make her lip sync to a country song that Roxy didn't like so she said "thanks for the opportunity but no thanks" so they changed the song for her.

idk if I totally believe it but there's heavy rumors that Morgan was initially murdering Cracker so hard in that lip sync that production had to halt the lip sync and ask her to blatantly tone it down. What we saw was Morgan at 60-70% apparently.

Also Laganja’s storyline of originally being cast on AS6 before Adore dropped out, then being given the LSA spot as a consolation, and her still making the most of it, just makes it so much more impressive.
Its absolutely crushing to me that the twist is (probabily) over and Jaidynn Diore Fierce wasnt a lipsync assasing that was called. Its crushing to me in *general* actually that Jaidynn has been paid dust by producers. WHERE👏🏻IS👏🏻JAIDYNN👏🏻DIORE👏🏻FIERCE'S👏🏻ALL👏🏻STAR👏🏻SEASON👏🏻?!?!? Its about time girl. Maybe unpopular opinion but IMO they should do like they have in the recent lipsync smackdowns. Where they have the list of possible song choices and each assassin gets to choose from that list.
Also even tho she slayed already we were ROBBED of Coco lipsyncing to Janet !!

I feel like Mhyi'a would be a PHENOMENAL lip sick assassin. I know she flops in the challenges but if I was up for elimination and the queen of flips came out I'd shit my pants.
Tbh the best so far have been a mix between Aja, Laganja, Yvie Oddly, and Roxxy have been arguably the best with people like Morgan McMichaels doing extremely well as well.
I really wish that they had the assassins pick the songs!!! Or pick from a pool or songs. They could have the assassin reveal the song similar to when they reveal lipsticks and they make it super dramatic! Missed opportunities
Kennedy and Alyssa being so far down on the list is exactly why I think they should've been given each other's songs
They should've always paired the lip sync song up to the strength of the assassin, and never do it for the winning queen. It would've made it more of a challenge if the winning queen actually beat out the lip sync assassin.
I read somewhere an idea I definitely agree with : they make Coco, Brooke and Manila come because of the people lipsyncing or eliminated that week (namely Serena, Ra'Jah, Kylie), but if they wanted to call them based on the songs, they should have given Uptown Funk to Manila (she could have camped it up...town), Miss you much to Coco (THE Janet impersonator) and Dirrty to Brooke (just the thought of having Brooke and Kylie sexing the song up to a 100 makes me crave it)

Laganja is one of the only Queens that truly took this lip sync assassin thing really serious and got her xhoreo foing and practiced and made a complete show and she tore that stage up so Amazeballs they gave her a 2 yr werq the world contract and Shes done that same song and look and all in several bars and brunches and all over 200 something times simce then,and BLEW HER CAREER UP ALL OBER AGAIN AND PPL GAVE HER ,HER FLOWERS FINALLY!THAYS MY GREEN QUEEN MAWMA!!
Some of these assassins just clearly knew they didn’t need to try hard (jorgeos, pangina, Monet etc) because they had very little to gain and that’s what ruins this format.

But yeah the LSAs should have been like boss battles, where the LSAs perform something in their wheelhouse.
Idea: there’s one top winner and two (and ONLY two) bottoms every week. Winner picks someone in the bottom two to lipsync against.
If the winner beats them, that queen goes home - BUT if the Bottom 2 queen beats the winner, then the other queen in the bottom goes home.
This is kinda slay …
I think this'd go really sour with alliances: the top queen chooses their best friend who is in the bottom, voluntarily fucks up the lipsync, and their best friend 'wins' their lipsync by default
@@BartOKemp Exactly a reason to do it; queens in alliances have a better shot of both saving each other AND exposing that they’re working together to the other queens! With the LSA, the queen trying to save their ally has to beat a (ideally) prepared and talented lip-syncer to make the alliance work, but with this, they simply have to throw the lip sync - and paint a target on their back for all the drama

The fact that out of *all* of these we only start getting into truly amazing lipsyncs in the top 10. I think there's only a few that were actually not good, but with some of these names you'd expect CONSTANT slayage. But producers are producing and a lot of the songs aren't songing.
I remember watching the Kameron vs Rajah lipsync and seeing Charli XCX vibing more to Silky's lipsync in the game within a game than to the performance of her own song
Finally someone gives some sort of credit to Kameron for Boom Clap. Whenever anyone talks about that lipsync they just talk about how bad the song choice was or how low energy Rajah was but honestly Kameron did the absolute best she could have done with the song, it still was nothing overly fantastic but Kam still manages to give the song SOME sort of something to go off of

I had the idea for a new twist where who ever loses the lip sync is also up for elimination. They often seem to like having 3 queens up for elimination so have Ru pick the bottom 2 and have the lip sync loser as the 3rd. A think a majority of fans might hate this (tbh idk how I’d feel about it if they actually did it) but it’d definitely make for some drama which the producers love

They brought them back to Drag Race and The Pit Stop, respectively, just to give them a boost as Hosts of their very own franchises. Don't tell me t'was a mere coincidence that their appearance on those shows occurred almost at the same time of the launch of Drag Race France and Drag Race Mexico. 🤨🤔💁♀️

For me as someone who keeps a spreadsheet tracking who has lipsynced against who in order to calculate queens' 6 Degrees of Lipsyncs, the best thing that has come out of the LSA format is how many different random queens have interacted because of the lipsync assassins. But otherwise, I could absolutely do without it because so many of the lipsyncs were lackluster.
You know what we need? *Lip sync battle (fixed ver.)* no editing just raw lip sync.

I loved how this twist actually was like a Showcase of possible queens for future all stars, like Jessica, si is sad because some queens will not have that chance.

I loved the twist, but it needed some tweaks:
-The lip-sync assassin should've won the $10k if they beat the contestant. (Or at least $5k and the other $5k would roll over).
- Bring REAL lip-sync assasins and use assasins from UK, Down Under, etc.
- I would've brought back Tayce, Tia Kofi, Peppermint, Scarlett Bobo, Icesis Couture and Jada Shada Hudson.
I was SO disappointed with jorgeous’ lip sync because I was waiting for her to be an assassin and assumed she would kill it!

I'm so into your hot takes on Nicky Doll. I've seen her perform live and she's more than she's showcase on the show. I wish she got a song more of her alley to really showcase her growth (but people watching drag race France already know she's an amazing host).
I really think they shouldve switched some of the assassins to suit the songs better in AS6:
-"Uptown Funk" should've been Heidi.
-"Miss you much" should've been Coco.
-"Dirrty" should've been Brooke.
-"Sugar Walls" should've been Manila.

The lip-sync assassin should've had an opportunity to earn some of the $10K lol whether it was $5K and the other $5K is lost or rolled over or some other ratio.
In terms of whether they should continue this twist, here’s what I think could happen:
First half of the season, do the two winners lip-sync. That way, the wins are more evenly distributed, more people get the chance to lip-sync, and so on. Then, about halfway through, bring it down to one winner, do the group vote, and have the LSA’s. That way, the stakes will feel higher, and the best of the best can go against the assassins. At least that’s my idea.

I think the main thing I would change with this ranking is that I would actually bump the Mayhem vs Ginger lip sync up to first place.
Laganja was superb, absolutely breathtaking but Mayhem honestly had me in tears with laughter.
Derek didn't do it as the fans would utterly and completely destroy him as after all it could be Mayhem's drag race

I think for it work they should've offered a $1000 tip to the lsa to give them an incentive to do well also. And also possibly give them the option to choose the song or atleast do a song which is clearly up the lsa's alley. Because that way it gives the winner of the week the chance to prove themselves and it forces them to do their best in order to beat an assassin in their prime if that makes sense

The lipsync assassin format has so much potential because "queen who is desperate for the win vs. certified lipsync assassin" is my favorite lipsync dynamic. Something about one of them demolishing the stage and making it look effortless contrasted with the other one going in with a real hunger, pulling out all the stops in an effort to upstage their opponent is just magical, especially if the "underdog" wins.
It's a shame that 80% of the time, what we actually get feels like rigger morris.
Don't get the hate on Nicky she did great, also Jasmine is so underrated it's so fun to see Jasmine dancing her ass off but also having such a great time 🧚♀️💕
Thank you for pointing out the UNJUST treatment of Nicky Doll after the episode. She did very well, and she looked amazing. Yeah she’s not an “assassin” but that doesn’t mean she didn’t do a good job.

I actually really loved the lip sync assassin twist, and I'll be very sad if they really don't bring it back!
I'm very new to drag race, and drag in general; and as I was getting into it and binging the all stars seasons, it was a great way for me to discover more queens and slowly but surely catch up on everything I had missed or hadn't seen yet. I had no idea who Jessica Wild was until seeing her as the assassin, and I loved her so much more going into all stars 8 because of it!! Being introduced to Laganja through her split jump was actually insane; catching up with her story afterwards got me to love her soo much more
After watching this recap, I realised they don't fully use the lipsync assasin twist, as I feel 50% of the lipsyncer + song + production combo is not well produced. Maybe it's time to change the format again? Or go back to TOP 2 all stars lipsync of the week.

Love heidi to death but that rating for her lipsync is too high for me. Her losing her prop immediately and physically reacting to it cemented ginger as the winner and it happened in the first 10 secs of the lipsync
