Bosozoku is a Japanese youth subculture associated with customized motorcycles. The first appearance of these types of biker gangs was in the 1950s. Popularity climbed throughout the 1980s and 1990s, at the same time another popular scene in the Japanese automotive subculture was gaining momentum, known as Kaido Racers. In America, the Bosozoku car has remained a rare sight to be seen, with some fans of the culture doing their best to create their own Bosozoku car. Today Alex sits down to break down the world of the Bosozoku in today's episode, So You Want A Bosozoku Car.

No because america wouldn't understand
Bruh I was actually drinking water when dude told me to drink my water but instead I choked on it and then started laughing.
lmao same
I'd never build one but I will always appreciate and enjoy looking at them. I remember watching them toy with the police in Okinawa when I was stationed over there. That shit was hilarious, respect!
Honestly, I respect a bosozoku build a lot more than a lot of builds because of the time and effort that would go into it. I personally don't consider 'wheels, tires, and coilovers' to be much of a build tbh though.
they are beautiful expressional pieces. True works of art with deep history
what i love about the culture is that you will never, ever see the same car twice. every single one is completely custom in its own way
So you want to hangout with Alex from fitment industries. Waiting for that episode.

4:30 you missed the opportunity to show that guy rev his car to the "Jingle Bells" song 😂
😂
Appreciate the dedication and research that went into this one. I could tell you were passionate about it. Yes it deserves to be respected even tho it's an odd scene.

@@Bacon_E30 Yes
He got all info wrong and mistermed everything anout the subcultures. “Bosozoku” as a whole has nothing to do with the cars.

I wish this style would become popular again in America, but on newer cars too. Can you imagine a bosozoku Focus ST or 350Z?
I want to turn my ST into a bosozoku ST after its mountain road slaying life is done, I think it would be dope 👌
That's not what bosozoku is. It's a specific set of cars.
@chue lee I own one. It's not 'any car' or 'mods' there's different subgroups. It is done a certain way.
That would be dope!
Hear me out do it on a na miata to piss the purists off even more
Trying to convince my brother we need to bosozuko his old John deer riding mower and put a racing belt on it.
I'll keep you updated
Never heard about Bosozoku cars before, but I sure as hell want one now.
I have a fetish for Bamboo Spear Exhausts.
Wonder how Alex would sound when pronouncing the Swedish word “Tunnbrödsrulle” (a thin Swedish bread), ”Knäckebröd” would probably also be fun to hear Alex try to pronounce (another type of Swedish bred, a crispy biscuit like bread).
I love japan's car culture. It has such a rich history and normally isn't as judgmental as most western car culture's opinions of how cars should "look". Plus without bosozoku movement, we more than likely wouldn't have wide body kits and companies like Rocket Bunny & Liberty Walk or even tsurikawas as car accessories lmao
Kei Miura the creator of Rocket Bunny was actually involved in the Kaido Racer scene which was the origin of Rocket Bunny itself so your comment is spot on!
Give me more of that history lessons. 🍿

Can we get an episode of, "So you want a Kanjozoku car" ??? I think it would be great
same
You say they weren't hitting their target market yet you remember the the lyrics even years later. Can't you see? We're in end game now o_o. We are currently the target mark..we always were.
Also water isn't wet. Wet is there expression of the relationship in how liquid particles stick to a surface.. Basically in a play on words water isn't wet the surface is.
Also I wish you gave a quick mention/shoutout that bosozoku split apart into different gangs one primary gang being kanjozoku which is like the entirety of why people even mod Hondas without the bosozoku there would be no kanjozoku ergo no honda culture/history. I think was worth at least a shoutout I understand this video was strictly about Bosozoku though so I can respect leaving it out.
It's a trend we need to bring back
Day 130 of asking for "So you want a VW Passat W8".
Been waiting for this episode
I can relate to the first part of the bosozoku lifestyle: finding purpose in fear and excitement, which are ultimately two sides of the same coin. It was downhill skiing that first helped me discover my love of speed. Cars were a natural continuation of that love. For me, it's not about rebelling against society, it's about seeing how far you can push yourself, and feeling that euphoric tidal wave of adrenaline crash over your body. The feeling of teetering right on the edge of oblivion is like a drug. Whether it ultimately brings someone meaning in a philosophical sense is a more subjective question.
All of this aside, I love the modern Bosozoku aesthetic to death because it preserves the original spirit of the term by being unapologetically silly, thereby shedding the pretensions of its association with the purely rebellious, criminal types. I wish I had had room to keep my Saturn station wagon.... if any car ever looked like it was begging for a big ass wing, side exits, and a spray painted mural of Sailor Moon, it was that one.
Still looking for 'So you want a 300c Hemi'
One day you'll have seen enough of these comments and it'll be in your brain, and you'll feel bad.
Great vid bro.
My favorite style of car
Points for mentioning Yankii culture but I believe they were more about some gang stuff and for some, their version of the Greaser/rockabilly lifestyle while not necessarily focused on the cars, pretty much more motorcycle centered.
I love how you throw in the Runescape references in your videos here and there. True OGs played/play Runescape. You learn real economics on Runescape that they dont teach in school, but you probably knew about this already.
I wish these were more popular!!!
Want to see a modern day build?

Thanks for making a video that again makes it way easier for me to explain to my friend what I do.

I love that so many people I follow had clips in this video.
Honestly I love the mentality and culture of bosu..... ( I give up on spelling) I'm not sure i would be as intense with the body work that they do but I love the paint jobs
Ever since I first heard of bosozoku, ive been nothing but interested in it. i started searching more about it and what not and ive decided to start building one of my own. ive got a great condition, low mileage (140k), 1989 Camry (4cyl) that im turning into a bosozoku car. i know what people are gonna think, "why a camry?" well im poor and can't afford a Cresta, corona, chaser, or any other a
*actual* old boso -platorm toyota, but the 2nd gen camry actually has a ton in common, body style wise, with those other cars. Ive already got a straight pipe, twin tip exaust pointing out and upwards from the car, I've cut the springs (but might eventually just do pucks because fuck it), next up is my air dam, bumpers and skirts, taillights, 14x8.5 SSR' s, stretched tires, fender flares, flashy interior, air horns, new steering wheel, and a glossy re paint job. the main reason im building this car is because i really want to keep this car culture alive. my buddy has a 280zx turbo that he's making a sort of Kyushu build out of too
yes, yes i do. bosuzoku is the coolest car culture, everything else wishes it was bosuzoku.
I love em, something so pure about it
It's not a trend, it's a lifestyle!
good video i am planning a zokusha build from a Suzuki GS450

Typically types of model were used with Crown, Cedric, Cresta, MarkII , Laurel, Bluebird and Skyline. Very few Z’s and none of Mazda’s Rx7s I’ve seen when I was child. Back then no Honda vehicle was used for bosozoku but motorcycles.
bosozoku and jdm are my favourite types of cars
The intros for this series are so fucking baller
Yoo sprite in the water cup
I would never build a car like that, the motorcycles are super cool though. I like their gumption.
I like the bozuzoku style i think its dope. Love the expression and culture. Its my car and screw your feelings on it. Badass!!

Can’t believe kaido/haiso/kyusha style cars are still being called bosozoku.
May I ask what the differences between it all is? /Gen
@@exist4046 The issue mostly is that people tend to generalize all crazy out there style cars from the late 70’s and throughout the 80’s car culture in japan as “bosozoku”. There is a wild array of different subcultures of the car culture then but the most common one people mis represent is Kaido Racer cars (like the car in the thumbnail for this video. I’m no expert but bosozoku is not the same thing as these cars. Sure styling and some attributes can be taken from both kaido racers and bosozoku or zokusha style bikes and be compared but it doesn’t make it the same thing. Bosozoku is used as a blanket term 99% of the time being used incorrectly by people who have no clue what they are talking about. The car in the thumbnail is a Kaido Racer car, not bosozoku. Bosozoku refers to the prefectural biker gangs japan used to have in the 70’s to 80’s.
TLDR:
Bosozoku = biker gangs that were active all the way from the 60’s to the late 80’s
Kaido racer/Hausa/kyusha ect cars = Cars like the one in the thumbnail. From crazy styling to simple low down machines with bases normally being old late 70’s 80’s cars like 1st generations cressida’s/mk2’s/crowns ect.
I’m sure there are some things I got wrong but to my knowledge. That is the difference between the two.
Bosozoku scooters are a weird offshoot of this styling as well, I have a couple videos of mine if u want to check that out (even though mine aren’t super proper just use some styling cues) or check out the donut media video on scooters, also from what I found out the Japanese people that are into this style are actually supper accepting, while a lot of American people who replicate this style are huge on period correctness, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but they tend to just not accept people if they use a newer or different base that they don’t consider “period correct.” Just warning anyone who wants to get into the hat that that will most likely happen. But f those people, be rebellious in the already rebellious scene, and do whatever you want.
If i have a foot and a half blast pipe on my 335 does that count
Next should be kanjozoku👆

I want to build a Bosozoku car so bad. Would be a fun project

I really want to build Shakotan car, but I know some asshole will see it and go "because this car is ugly, I am entitled to vandalize it because everyone will agree that it is ugly!" And I don't got money to build something I cant drive and park on the street.
Edit: Bosozoku are the people, not the cars. Its like calling lowriders "gangbanger cars." Alex from @noriyaro explainex it once in a hoonigan podcast. Also, if you want one, get ready to learn how to lay fiberglass, because I dont think this is one of those kits you can just buy with daddy's money. At less, not easily or cheap enough to make it worth the novelty.

hope u don't mind, but what are the main difference of a bosozoku and a kaido racer?
@@shittoi_bean1055 I would actually like to know too
@@shittoi_bean1055 As far as I know, and I do want to say, I am not Japanese so I'm not a reliable source, but as far as I know; Bosozoku is the culture surrounding bikes and biker gangs which has its roots in WWII. Kaido Racers are the modified cars that are heavily influenced by Group 5 race cars of the 80s, most notably the Skyline, Silvia and Bluebird Super Silhouettes. In Japan, Bosozoku and Kaido Racers are seen in similar circles and sometimes cruise together, but are not one and the same.
