    That is exactly what the loco was like when I worked at the power station in the 1970s and one of the drivers was named Lionel Gatsby.

    Yes, I HAVE traveled behind a 20, and it made so much noise that I couldn’t even think. And that was doing 25 miles per hour on the Epping Ongar Railway.

      Hi Anthony, I'm glad it's finally sorted and I can get back to normal. Still a little pain but recovery has gone better than I expected. I'm getting out and about again and even managed to film at a heritage railway yesterday. Thanks again and all the best Rick

    Another great video. Castle Donington Power Station had two 0-4-0 Saddle Tanks built by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns Ltd in 1953 which survived until the station closed in 1994. I think they were kept as back up for diesel shunters in later years. They were indeed painted blue. I am not sure if they carried the Power Gen name after Central Electricity Generating Board was privatised. My Dad worked at the station in the early 1960s.

      Hi Russell, same here, the ones I really wanted were City of London and Clann Line. Over 40 years later and with renewed interest in railways one of my first buys was City of London and it didn't disappoint. I also have Glasgow and despite being blue it hasn't caught Pauline's eye, maybe it has too many wheels! All the best Rick

    Living the Wernn dream😉
    You mentioned a very interesting topic, that is lubricants.
    In one way you want them in your loco (never ever run a moving mechanical part dry), and in an other way you don't want them.
    The problems with lubricants is they are basically like water, they dry up, being it for over a much longer period, it will change it's structure into a tar like substance, and the effect becomes the opposite of lubrication and it acts as a break to the point of being a glue.
    Most people I know make the mistake of "only" lubricate from time to time.
    What you do then, is bring back moisture back into in the old lubricant, but over time it gets thicker and thicker, accumulates very fine dirt particles.
    The thickening of the oils start to work as a break, you can compare it as driving your car with the handbreak on, and you know that something is going to give in in the end.
    Besides that, the dirt particles accumulated in the old dirty oils start to work as a sand paper, wearing out your gears and shafts to the point of destruction.
    And another fact is they can make plastics unstable destroying gears to even complete bodies.
    So my advice is, whenever you buy a secondhand loco, even before you run it, take it completely apart, get rid of all dirt and old oils, even if it's brand new old stock(+/-6 years old and over), and repeat it after on lets say like an annual overhaul.
    Some people think that with the new and better oils this is not necessary anymore, but that's a false truth, the only thing the new oils have as a plus is that they stay stable for a much longer time, but in the end do the same.
    And products for removing old lubricants depends on what material you remove it from, you can go from mild to very aggressive oil removers, an example of a mild remover can be a dish wash soap and water such as Dreft, and a very strong remover would be acetone or break cleaner fluit.
    But always keep in mind the the more aggressive you product is, the better it removes old oils, but the bigger the chance is, that it's going to also eat in your plastics and paints, so bit of caution is advised, the right product for the right job, and don't forget protecting your self working with these products.
    Re-lubrication after is also important, often te maker puts in guidelines where to lubricate with the model, and don't over do it, I've bought second hand trains online that swam in oil, a drop of oil on the given points that's all it needs, and makes you annual thorough cleaning service an easy joy to do.
    Rick I do hope your surgery on your leg has done it's wonders (some new lubricants😉) and hope to see you both back on the road again taking us back on a magical mystery tour of model train shows…
    cheers,
    Danny

    Wrenn 20's are a bit old for me but the Lima ones are quite nice. I've got one that needs a repaint but I need another to pair with it.

    I had heard about Wrenn needing to tool up a new 08 diesel body after Dublo hacked about the original tooling for their last ditch cheap 0-4-0 entry level model.
    But , the first I have heard of Wrenn needing to re tool the class 20 body to any large extent. Something for me to find out more about.

    Chuffed puffers it’s strange watching you (was going to put guys but that’s wrong in todays modern world, then thought dudes no then thought two but far 2 boring then thought ‘mih dears’ but will settle for) persons together face on usually it’s at a show 1 person at a time but that’s some excel-lento content. Do you both share the same concept on your own layout or is it bit in the middle IE GWR VS LNER or BR vs sandwiches or steam vs Diesel ?

    • @wellchuffedrailways
      @wellchuffedrailways  Місяць тому +1

      Hi Josef, the only concept is there is no concept. I like both steam and Diesel but favour Diesel as per my video comments. Region wise I like the LMS followed by SR but our layout is roughly set around 1990 so the steam will be heritage stock. Pauline prefers the LNER with the teak coaches, other than that blue and streamlined and anything small and cute. Cheers for watching Rick

    • @RonCooper-nl4pn
      @RonCooper-nl4pn Місяць тому

      I have been led to believe that the Class 20 cab is the FRONT of the locomotive ! I had the green Wren 20 and I also had a green Lima 20 and when I went into ‘O’ gauge one of them had to go ! I kept the Lima one purely because of the better detail it incorporated. I still have it today and I also have one now in ‘O’ gauge and that is in the green livery. The 20s were my favourite diesel and I am now into Class 66 and I have 12 of them in ‘OO’ and an ‘O’ gauge one on preorder from Dapol in the EVENING STAR livery with DCC Sound.
      Regards from Ron 👍😃🚂
