On this week’s episode of Sweetwater’s Plugged In podcast, Mitch Gallagher is joined by longtime friend of Sweetwater and multi-hyphenate bassist, composer, producer, and Grammy Award-winning low-end theorist Marcus Miller. The legendary musician’s storied career has seen him collaborating with countless jazz, funk, and R&B legends, building a robust catalog of indelible grooves, and expanding his oeuvre to include scoring for film and television. As his career has evolved, Miller’s found himself coleading the Sire brand of guitars and basses with his jazz-crusading compatriot, Larry Carlton. Mitch and Marcus dive into the deep end of tone, time, and all things funk. Take a listen!

No mention of David Sanborn and Luther Vandross during the intro? Wasn't that when the world started noticing him?

He was a sideman since the mid to late 70s.I'd say 1980s Miles Davis ( already at legendary status) is who Marcus gained notoriety with first. Luther was at the beginning of his career and David who had previous albums didn't have any notoriety yet when Marcus began his collaboration with them in the early 80s. Marcus was contribution on bass, composing and producing with vital in Luther and especially Davids success.

Marcus is a monster on that bass. I was a proud owner of his SWR pre. But....I've tried listening to his solo music and all the bass slapping and string popping turned me off. That gets annoying after a while.

Yeah I agree it becomes too repetitive, one dimensional and boring after about 3 songs. No other instruments get to shine or lead. He work where he is not the band leader is his best work.
