    My second car was a 1965 Beetle that I purchased new at age 18 and paid cash for it. It cost $1,955.14 out the door. I drove it for 8 yrs and sold it for $900. It had 156,000 miles on it when I parted company with it.

    My first car, at age 16 was a 1960 VW Beetle. 36hp and no gas gauge. When the car stuttered, flipping a lever above and to the right of the gas pedal gave you a gallon of fuel. I can still remember that the car was so airtight that if you didn't crack a window when you shut the door your ears would feel the pressure. A truly well thought-out car.

    • @MrAndyLocksmith
      @MrAndyLocksmith 2 роки тому

      Beetles don’t run on gas their fuel is petrol. Hence none would be equipped with a “gas gauge”.
      Also not sure why you’d want to “crack a window”.

      My first bug was a 64 that I bought from my uncle for 100 bucks. Cool thing about was that I used to ride in it when I was little when they lived on Long Island. So it has some sentimental value for me. Loved that car!! As far as "cracking a window" a bit, the car was sealed so well that it needed to breathe. I remember feeling it in my ears.

    Excellent and informative. I learned to drive in a Beetle. The first to be built outside Germany was assembled in Dublin, Ireland. The car was bought back by VW, restored to new condition and now resides in thd VW museum in Wolfsburg, complete with its Dublin licence plates.

    To this day I can not understand people who don't like the Beetle. The older and with as little fancy stuff as possible, this car can do absolutely everything. My preferred era is anything between 1948 and 1959, even if I have one from as late as 1968. And I do prefer the standard sedan, no sunroof and such. And on another note, I could beat every single car challenge from old Top Gear using nothing but a old standard Beetle. So much for Clarkson's car knowledge.

      I had a 60 (my dad gave me that), a 73 I bought on my own in 76 and a 66 my sister gave me after the engine froze in 77. The 66 was my favorite and I spent good money to get it back to original. After I finished fixing and painting the 66 was stolen and totally stripped in 1981. I can say that of all the Bugs I had driven, the 66 was the best. It was fast enough for the freeway and was more dependable than my 73.

    In 1958 my Dad wanted to buy a VW in Pennsylvania. He was told there was a one year waiting list. Instead he bought a Renault Dauphine And regretted it. In winter he had to crank start it because the 6V starter couldn't crank it fast enough to start the engine. Then within a year the engine's main bearings failed and the engine seized, just after the warranty expired. He never bought another foreign car as long as he lived. Many decades later he gave me a hard time for buying a Subaru.

      Sales of VW badged cars didn't start rolling off the production lines until 1946 . Less than 100 cars were produced whilst Hitler was alive , and they were all given to party officials .
      Ironically , the men responsible for the success of VW were two British Military engineers , Colonel Charles Radclyffe and Major Ivan Hurst .
      I believe there are a couple of the early , pre 1946 cars still surviving , but they are museum pieces. You'll never find a pre 1946 car for sale .
