Oh man, I love stumbling across these performances. There's good, and then there's Greg Koch and Josh Smith good. And when Josh Smith is impressed by your playing? That's a whole other level, son.
@@JasonHobbsGuitarist What I meant is that his "unconventional" or unpredictable attitude of playing sort of reminds me of Monk's piano playing sometimes. I was actually very impressed when the first album of his organ trio came out which convinced me that he can be a much more "coherent" musician than I thought up to then. HOLY SHIT! I could not think of two guitar players alive that I would rather see perform together. Greg is just all round amazing, I've never not smiled while watching him play or listening to his one man banter. He has a style of playing all his own that I can only describe as playful virtuosity. (Even Josh cracked a few smiles watching him play). Josh is IMO the greatest traditional blues guitar player alive today. Amazing video to stumble onto this sunday afternoon.
At first watching Greg it's hard not to wonder if he just picks notes at random and then tries to fix it later. After a while it becomes apparent that he actually has an unbelievable understanding of what's going on. Some of the little bits I pick up on when he's just playing rhythm under Toby's solo or whatever are really pretty amazing. I think there are a quite a few things that slip by under the radar while everyone is focusing on the blazing fast licks, chicken pickin, etc.
He's got a unique way of voicing chords and phrasing and timing his lines. There's just a weird thing going on there, like at the first half of his solo here. He's going for some almost atonal licks with weird bends and feel etc, but the way he resolves it just makes it sweet, like laying a sleeping baby down in a crib. He's kinda like the old funk cats who knew that you want to make it nasty sometimes, just for the taste.
Greg & Son, the Keys by Toby and Josh all a jealously guarded government secret of the warm Blues Wars... Thanx for yet another winner Lynda and... cheers
Two of the most original voices on guitar and in blues. Their mastery of time is breathtaking. And you can tell how witty they both are, all while taking things seriously too. And so much of their playing perfectly balanced their influences along with their own original voices. Just incredible.
Roy kock is as boring as watching paint dry. he’s run out of licks so he just tries to sound weird and gimmicky. he ran out of licks and music 20 years ago. everyone sucks his greasy micro pecker because his double stop wannabe country jazz is only found in a room full of old dudes who spend the weekend at guitar center trying to tune their e string.
God Bless Lynda LaHue... hon, you are awesome beyond any application of the word. Having captured so many amazing musicians in their feral animal best is a testament to your dedication to great blues and amazing video. Two thumbs up!!

"What key are we in?" -Josh Smith 0:16 Josh proceeds to burn it as if he's played it his entire life. Master guitarist. Greg is in a league of his own. He is incomparable.
Josh Smith looks like a bi-lingual language expert in the presence of the guy who mastered Sanskrit and all Asian languages together...behind his back!
Anyone unfamiliar with the Koch Marshall Trio and the story behind 'Toby Arrives' owes it themselves to look back at how that match made in heaven came together as a fortuitously timed 'jam session' that almost wasn't. Good stuff and now, here we are.
I've watched so many guitar review videos for shit I'll never be able to afford just because of his playing (he reviews guitars for Wildwood). I legit just watch the videos for the tasty playing and hilarious antics. He could be playing an Estaban acoustic and I'd still tune in....
A deep Master demonstration of a blues conversation between musicians. THAT performance would impress any of the founding father, blues geniuses, and give them heart, that the Blues ain’t gonna die.

WOWWWW! Totally Legendary. Somewhere Roy is smiling! Josh played a great solo. I'm thinking, how can Greg follow that? Then he played, and I thought, "Oh...... just like that"
