also just a side note for removing the door harness. simply pull upwards from the bottom to remove the entire assembly without force required. lol

Is there a recall on the door handles?

thanks for the video! what I don't understand is how BMW haven't put a final solution to this issue and also not covering it by recall.

Thanks Chris! Now I’m going to officially rip off the multi layers of paper towel that’s covering the sticky son of a handle and attempt to finally do what you have shown me is possible without going to the dealership. For those of you asking, no, there are currently no recalls for this defect! This isn’t considered a safety issue so there will not be one administered for it since it’s “cosmetic”. My handle is black so without it being completely covered, my passengers (who are clients) end up with black BMW goo on their hands AND clothes as parting gifts! That sticky son of a handle is going down.... literally..... because as soon as I take it off the door I’m throwing it across the street into the Creek once I pry it loose from my fingers!

Thanks so much for the video. I am not a "car guy" at all, but your video gave me the courage to take this project on to fix my wife's car. The passenger sticky handle was a source of constant frustration for her. Only a couple observations. If you completely chisel off the heads of those plastic rivets from the old door handle, you don't have to drill anything. You can simply push those rivet stubs through, I hammered a phillips head screwdriver to punch them out. That way you don't take a chance on accidentally increasing the diameter of the hole. The other thing has to do with removing those screws. You went from a screwdriver to a wrench, but I found that an impact wrench with a torx bit and bit extender made it easy and quick. The main thing, however, is that without your video I would never have tried this fix and it came out great. The color match (tan in my case) is not exact, but the result is still WAY better than the sticky mess that was there and I didn't have to pay BMW the $1,000 they wanted to replace the handle. Thank you!

Great video! I've been putting off doing this for a while now but after watching your DIY I think I'm gonna go for it!
Question though: you said the outer handle was actually still ok and not sticky, and you could have reused it. Do you think if you did, would it have fit better than the replacement? You mentioned there was a gap that didn't really sit flush at the top, so I'm wondering if it's better to reuse the original outer part? Thanks!
