Specific gravity is especially useful in keeping glazes mixed to the preferred consistency. The question is what is the best practice for measuring the specific gravity with a glaze? In this episode Phil explains his process for measuring specific gravity of a glaze and the use of hydrometers.

Another easy method to get SG: Pour a mixed glaze into a graduated cylinder or beaker that uses milliliters for the scale. Write down the weight in grams and write down the volume in milliliters. Divide the weight by the volume (grams divided by milliliters). This is your specific gravity. There is no need to pour to a designated volume - just write down the 2 numbers and divide. Very helpful and useful discussing the specific gravity in a simple form to understand.
I use commercial brush on glazes and I single fire and this will be very useful when the glazes dry up in the container and I need to re-hydrate. I will now start keeping a record of the glazes' specific gravity when they first arrive and keep track of them when they age and if I have to add water. Another adventure in pottery to add to my schedule.
