  • Welcome to The Potter’s Round Table, in this episode we discuss Tips for Making Professional Looking Pottery.
Just about every potter or pottery student can look at other peoples’ pots and recognize professional quality work. But what is it that makes the work look “professional”? In this discussion, we will talk about some things that every potter can do to improve the appearance or presentation of their work.
The Potters’ Round Table is a production of Washington Street Studios. As a result of the pandemic the Round Table is hosted as a UA-cam livestream event and then edited to be added to our video library.
The Potters’ Round Table is brought to you by Washington Street Studios, a community pottery studio, gallery, and pottery school located in Harpers Ferry / Bolivar, WV. We exist to provide ceramic artists an affordable, fully equipped studio space for aspiring, emerging and established artists to share their creative energy and knowledge in an environment designed to support the ceramic artist. If you want to learn more about Washington Street Studios, visit our website at www.hfclay.com/.
At Washington Street Studios, we believe the sharing of creative energy and knowledge will improve the quality of our art and increase the appreciation of art within our community. We are striving to create an environment where the arts are shared and appreciated. We want to grow as a family of artists and contribute to our community.
This video is one of our steps to share our passion for the ceramic arts, creative energy and knowledge with other artists and art lovers. We also created an audio version to expand our audience. If you are looking for the podcast of our show search for the ‘The Potters Round Table’ on your podcast platform of choice or go to anchor.fm/thepottersroundtable.

Jay, my name is Dennis and Phil and I are business partners at Washington Street Studios. I took up pottery preparing for retirement and I will warn you, pottery is addicting! I have a home studio with three wheels, shelves full of tools and a kiln. And our business has a total of 15 wheels, 7 kilns, slab roller, extruder and spray booth. It's the most fun retirement a person could have!

Pottery is my hobby and I make it because I enjoy ceramics. I consider myself an amateur studio potter who makes nonfunctional decorative pieces that I intend to be unique and one of a kind. When they turn out with uneven handles, twisted bodies or less than perfect, that reflects on my intention to be “Folk Art” rather then a production piece. I want my work to be seen as amateur rather than professional. Needless to say I don’t sell my pieces. I do find some of your videos entertaining and helpful.

Rohrshack, I am Dennis, the behind the camera guy, and I work much the same way. I have found that as I grow in my skills in pottery I am able to make intentional alterations to make the pieces unique and hand-made. And I also find Phil's lectures and teachings most entertaining and helpful!
      Thanks for your comment.

@@WashingtonStreetStudios hi Dennis, I recently heard that Phil passed away. So sorry to hear that news. Two questions, is anyone going to take his place and how can I get access to all his past videos? Not that I think he can be replaced easily but I have learned so much from him. He will be remembered for a long time since I suspect he was a teacher’s teacher. May he Rest In Peace and sincere condolences to his family.

@@rOHRshackartpottery All of his videos will remain on this channel. And this channel will remain as long as UA-cam allows! We are going to continue making videos and we are working on that plan. We may invite guest potters to present as well as presenting with the 'other' owners of Washington Street Studios.

Thank you. A potter for many years, now full time. Great points. I will be evaluating my steps and technique. Have always signed my name so you could read it. Have many pots from many potter friends, most lacking in good signature, so even I am not sure who made them.
