My siblings and I chose some form of music to do as kids. (Our family just does music, but just as a hobby) I was the only one to choose a string instrument as my first instrument and to this day all string instruments have a special place in my heart. Love 'em.
Why is it that when we have an extraordinary piece of music, from whatever genre, we witness pointless comparisons with comments claiming one instrument or musician is better, or more melodious bla bla bla, and comments such as "goddesses & mere mortals." "I know this was not a competition but..." It's NOT relevant! Do people really think that Anoushka Shankar makes these silly comparisons? You really are doing these musicians a major disservice. It works beautifully BECAUSE of, not in spite of, the contrast between the instruments.
I agree. Instruments are beautiful if they are played beautifully and Anoushka Shankar is an incredibly beautiful musician, but it's her that makes the music. People wouldn't say it was beautiful if I was playing it.
I concur. I notice this way too much here. When musicians collaborate on stage or anywhere for that matter, they are not competing. They are simply bringing out great music by way of their talent. Great point Pipkin, thanks for sharing...
Veena scales turn all music into sattvik music, romance, passion, aggression, rap rock everything becomes satvik in flavour on veena scales. There might be a strong reason why goddess saraswati holds veena and not any other string instruments
Even though I play guitar since many years I still like to listen to sitar more. :) I admit both instruments have their own beauty and flavours. I am glad I found this amazing video. :)
I also play flamenco guitar and I have absolutely fell in love with Hindustani classical music. If you haven't heard of Indialucia you should definitely check them out.
Lol obviously coming from someone who only learned a few chords and never went into the depths of guitar mastery. It's the best instrument to improvise on. Watch the first few minutes, ragas can also be played on the guitar using fingerpicking and tapping techniques and in a much more melodic fashion (though it depends what sounds more melodic to you). It's just both the instruments represent different melodic modes and styles of playing based on their respective origins. In terms of versatility and chord progressions, the guitar wins in a heartbeat. You can play anything from Rock, Jazz, Metal, Blues to Djent on an electric while finding new scales during a guitar solo and fitting them into the appropriate modes. Sitar on the other hand is monotonous to Indian Classical music only and it is where it's the potent and compatible. Watch an Eddie Van Halen solo to understand further. In simple terms, you can't use a sitar instead of an electric to do what the likes of Satriani, Randy Rhoads and Dave Mustaine do and vice versa.
A detailed description of various reasons why you're wrong in this case is possible, it is however without purpose. Suffice to say that while you say "anything from rock, jazz, metal, blues to djent", you fail to recognize that between those styles, there is actually very little melodic or musical difference. They all share heavily in structure, scale, chordal progression.
For the people that commented Flamenco guitar and sitar Don't go well together. Please Listen to the band "Indialucia" they Crush it!! Second: Pepe is playing guitar in a (B phrygian Flamenco scale ) Not the best key for Sitar to jam with. Anoushka pulled it off rather well considering her sitar was tuned to D major! listen to her sympathetic strings.. they ring in D major. You can see her face at 0:45 seconds I don't think she was expecting him to play in B Phrygian. lol (That could of been Pepe's way of saying Flamenco is king) lol I love both.
That high D note that Anoushka keeps hitting was killing me!! ugh... It would have sounded better if she played only sitar riffs with out that annoying high "D" drone note. (Less is more) Also to the video uploader please put Pepe Habichuela's name in the credits.. he's technically more famous than Anoushka.

You are so wrong. You have no idea about the spectacularly complex melodies in Indian classical music, given by multiple instruments, especially the sitar. Melodic frameworks called Raags have existed since the BC era.
Rock music has existed in sitar based compositions too. It's just that they haven't been called rock. Ravi Shankar has played so many pieces that can easily be considered to be rock, but with way better melodies.
Abhishek I feel guitar has a soulfulness that is more simple, pure, & straightforward, while sitar is very mysterious & kinda sexy. I had to think hard about the sofistication statement. It is enough that you have great admiration for the sitar though as do I. Some other comments here show a lack of understanding in music. ( not yours). There is a historical connection with flamenco and Indian classical music. I find playing the sitar more intuitive, whereas the guitar not so & I've played guitar 40 years. I'm also interested in building instruments. Many Indian instruments are very ''basic', but they adorn them so beautifully. Guitars need to be built very precisely. I guess really, the 'basic' concept of movable frets on the sitar makes this ancient instrument more advanced when compared to the guitar. And the odd thing in terms of classical/flamenco guitars is that the better they are to play and sound, the more prone they are to need repair. Flamenco & Indian music also share a lot of similarities in complex rhythms and timing. That said, I'd pay equal money to listen to either. They are fascinating forms of music.
Can't argue with that - but you cheated. We were talking about the man-made instruments, not heavenly made. But then, that would probably make the Sitar as the number one instrument when compared to what the human voice can do - or violin / viola. While guitars are my instrument of choice, the fretless varieties copy the voice better.
