    Perfect timing. I have a Phal that’s dropped all leaves and have no roots except a few without velomin. I’m down to a spike that I recently cut the blooms off of with the hopes of encouraging root growth. She was one step away from the garbage before this video. She thanks you.

    Thanks You so much for this video, I have a mini Phal and she has 13 leaves on her and lots of tiny roots. She was living in sphagnum moss for a long time but the moss was green, green, green so I decided to change her out of it. She was in a drinking glass. So with this video I decided to put her into bark and see how she will do. I make holes around the plastic container she will be in and will see how she will do. I also purchased her from Trader Joe’s market. Keep doing you video’s love to watch them and become educated....

    Hi Danielle, excellent video. I soaked my rootless phal same thing S yours but still no visible roots. Perhaps more patience. The other phal behaves different. Everytime I relocate her, she drops her bloom. She finally lost the last bloom recently & her spike turned yellow from green. Like yours, my phal has little thin roots but so glad some of her roots branched out another roots. So I guess she adjusted to water culture. Wish she’ll bloom again.

    Very informative, video as usual. Good to know those little strands are still useful to hydrate the plant. and yes, some Phals do not real enjoy wc. My sweet memory liodoro which is closer to species had a very good root system but little by little she lost most of them in wc. Well, trial and error with some. Thank you Danielle.

      Fernanda Nascimento orchids & succulents I was worried that would happen with my Phalaenopsis schilleriana because she is a species and I've heard difficult to grow but she seems to love it!
      Each orchid seems to have a mind of their own, 😆.
      Happy growing!

    Interesting on the "no root" orchids. Thank you! I really think your purple leaf phal is cal mag defficient. I had that same problem, yellow leaves as well. I added cal mag (after much research) consistently at every feeding diluted but often, often, often. Btw...I use semi wc. Love, love, love your videos and all your furbabies. You should feature one of them once in awhile. You know...star of the show!

      Sharon Holmes I agree, I add Cal/mag to every feeding so she should be getting what she needs now that she's at the ranch! 😄
      I will try to include my puppies more often!
      Thanks for watching!

    Hello! Try Epsom salt treatment. Many of your orchids are suffering from Mg deficiency, seen as purplish coloring, especially on new leaves.
    Thank you for your suggestions...they are often helpful.

    My Dendrobium Stardust Firebird is 50% Dendrobium unicum and I give it a dry winter rest to get it blooming. A dry and cool winter rest may be even better but I keep my plant in my living room and I don't want to give myself a cool winter rest. A dry winter rest means no watering for weeks.

    Dendrobium unicum blooms later than some other deciduous types, usually around May. Unlike a lot of the deciduous types, it will start new growth in the spring (March or April) and you will see the spikes start around the same time on the older growth.

    Hello, very informative video! If you have an issue with your dendrobiums you might want to take a look at the Orchid Whisperer on UA-cam. She has a way with her dendrobiums in water culture that is a little unconventional but it works to get them to bloom. Good luck!

      Carmie Teasdale thanks for the tip! I don't think she has a deciduous dendrobium though. Great news is after I posted this video two out of my three dendrobiums decided to put out flower spikes!

    Hi Danielle thank you for sharing i always enjoy watching your videos, i learn how save orchids with poor rots ... so very instructive. I ll do like you and let 20 min the rhizome in the water.
    Now i have "troubles" with my light i don t have enough light in the day Rick told me to give less food and be carefull not to put strong extra light, we ll see... do you have enough light in your room?

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  5 років тому +1

      Sophie Khajadour growing inside presents a lot of challenges with light. We have to just do the best we can and hope it’s “enough”. I confess I would love a few south facing windows but I don’t have them so my best light is through my west facing windows. All plants are growing well and some are giving me flower spikes so I have to assume some are in fact happy! Which makes me happy to! Happy growing!

    Great video Danielle. First I'm so jealous that your husband found the purple and white mini...I have that one and it's my favorite, I only saw it once! Hope it decides that wc isn't so bad, I keep mine in semi hydro. The unicum den.....if it's done growing all it's leaves, it will take about two to three months from that time to bloom, which it will have needed the winter's rest. Can't wait to see it bloom!.......... fusarium, how did you treat it? Thanks, Kelly.

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  5 років тому +1

      Kelly Duguay thanks! I’m trying to give it more water then I typically would to see if that works. I have not tried that yet with fine root mini Phalaenopsis. Perhaps because the roots are smaller it needs more hydration? We shall see.
      Thanks for the info on my dendrobium, I will continue to keep my fingers crossed for blooms.
      If your interested in how I treated fusarium I have several videos on that subject that you can check out also the channel Miracle Orchids has a lot of information so you can check that out too, she actually wrote a book on the subject.

    I just discarded 3 phals as tried and failed at w/c, to the point the last fabulously succulent leaves dropped off. The roots died trying w/c. What could I have done to revive them? I bought 2 new phals and removed some of the potting soil as wanted roots to see the light and air. They are wilting. Help, please. xx

  • @fortuneflux

    could the weird leaf direction be from previous wilting and then recovering in the new twisted direction?

    Do you soak the stem of that phalaenopsis for 20 minutes everyday? Also, do you put anything in the water to promote root growth?

  • @aungkuci
    @aungkuci 4 роки тому

    Hi Danielle, I have a phal with similar situation like the one you have @4:46 .....but so far she pushed out 3 roots (longest about 1.5", shortest 1/4" and they seem to be growing really slow) and the longer ones seem to be going upwards instead of going down. I don't want to soak the stem since Im afraid of getting stem rod. Do you have any suggestions for the roots to grow downwards? How often do you soak the root + stem in a day? For now, I wrapped the roots with microfiber and dip the cloth in the very mildly fertilized water. Thank you in advance!

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  4 роки тому +1

      I would soak the stem for 20-30 minutes wait for it to dry and then do it again so in warm weather every day, when it dried slower, every other day.
      What you are doing with the microfiber is excellent and what I do in this circumstance as well.
      Were the roots that are growing up between leaves? That can sometimes be the cause but if not those roots are just looking for water. If you leave the water in the glass at all times and use your microfiber they will eventually grow down. Unfortunately an orchid in this state doesn’t have much energy so the process is painfully slow.

      @@daniellesorchidranch1591 Yes, the roots are shooting out from between the leaves. Your videos have helped tremendously for some newbie like me. Thank you so much 😊

      Kevin A thanks so much! Always so pleased to help! If your plant has enough leaves above where the roots are coming out you might consider taking those bottom leaves off so the roots can grow down . It’s sometimes worth sacrificing a leaf or two so the plant can hydrate itself.

  • @myataylor4807
    @myataylor4807 5 років тому

    I usually start with 1/8 of the recommended amount. If you would like I will give you an update on my phals, especially the ones in icu. Do you give the ones in icu another fertilizing treatment?
    Thank you!

    I noticed fruits near your orchids. I have heard to keep all ripening fruit at least 10 feet away or it can cause troubles with blooms. Is this a myth? Enjoying your videos and I have some very root bound minis that I am considering trying the water with. They have a lot of very long air roots...should I tuck them into the vase or leave them in the air? Your orchids do not seem to have a lot of roots above the containers...how do you deal with air roots?

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  5 років тому

      Janet Licari I actually don't know if this is a myth or not. I do know fruit release gasses as they ripen so it's very possible. Fortunately those oranges have not been kept near any of my blooming orchids but I will keep it in mind just in case.
      I don't really have a lot of aerial roots on my orchids but the ones that go aerial I tend to leave alone as long as they have plenty of roots. If your minis have plenty of good roots in the media I wouldn't worry about the aerial roots.
      Thanks for watching!

    Hi Danielle, I also bought a huge phal yesterday for 5 dollars. She was on clearance at Lowe’s, with very beautiful pink blooms and a hot pink/ purple lip with white in the center. However when I got her home, she was so drenched in peet moss. After cleaning the peet moss, she now has one root to stick in water culture and a couple air roots with a few root stranglers without the velamin. I sprayed her roots and stem with peroxide and had to treat her stem with cinnamon and I have her callousing right now. Keep fingers crossed 🤞 that I can save her. Also may I ask what is your brand of cal/nitrate? I recently got one , but when I took it to test the water there was just a high level of ammonium that the lady recommended not using it because she said it was a dangerous level, even after watering it down.
    Thank you. 😊

      Mya Taylor thats so sweet of your daughter! And I agree you can save her!
      I hate moss, I know some people swear by it but it can quickly suffocate roots if your not careful and it turns acidic and hard to remove from fine rooted orchids. I know it can be used properly and effectively but I personally just don't like it! Lol

    Hi Danielle, just curious what does the wood do for the tulemnia orchids?

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  5 років тому

      Mya Taylor tolumnia orchids typically grow on branches and twigs. That means they have a quick wet dry cycle. I found I was getting lazy with that when I was growing them in glasses and allowing them to stay wet to long. By mounting them I’m kind of forcing myself to keep up with the wet dry cycle. Only problem, they have to be watered every day 🙄

    On your orchids with no roots do you soak the stem for 20 mins and then let it dry off. How long do you let it stand dry before soaking again? Thanks I have got some great tips from you!

    • @daniellesorchidranch1591
      @daniellesorchidranch1591  5 років тому +1

      Maxine Ellis yes and when I notice it's completely dry again (usually 2-3 days depending on how dry my environment is) I soak her again. It's a bit labor intensive but worth it when those roots start to pop out!
