Thank you so much for all your info regarding growing orchids in water culture, I've thought of this and watched your videos and now I have a new way of growing a few of my orchids this way and it looks beautiful looking through the glass with various rocks and marbles 😊 Exellent job. Nick from Toronto Canada...
I am a hydroponic grower… I have about 20 plants in water and most not all in Leca…EXCEPT my 2 or 3 orchids. Which I am going to take the bark and moss off TODAY! Thank you so much!
Hello Danielle, I'm from Brazil and I want you to know that I love your videos, it's helping me so much. I've started to grow my orchids in water for 2 months now and they seem to be a lot better then before. Specially the Phals. Lots of new roots and new leaf too. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your experiences. Love it! 💖
I just moved from London to southern France and finally my orchids are alive. I killed all of them in the past, but now I realized it was a matter of weather. Oh and by the way my collection of orchids goes down to my rich neighbors that as soon as the flowers die, they throw the plant away. Crazy, Isn't?
On a phal has only the root threads left like this one 12:25, and it gets some new roots, when do you cut the root threads off? (As I see in the 3 year old poster child that there are no thread roots.) Can you do a short video on this as I haven't seen another video about what happens to thread roots as time goes by.) 💖🌞🌵😷
Thank you so much for sharing Danielle!! I've been trying to save my Mom's Orchid that ended up with root rot!! List all of it roots, so I soaked the leaves in water til two new roots, and two new leaves grew!! Then the older leaves being soaked in water turned yellow so I removed them!! The new roots stopped growing and they're half inch up above the bottom of the stem so I had the stem in water and it started turning black!! So I took it out, sprayed it with peroxide and letting it dry out for a day!! But I'm happy you explained how you had the stem in and out of water, I will try that!!
Oh wait!! You have dogs??? Ok we are soulmates! 🤣😆. Sure have learned a lot about rootless orchids! The orchid I received from daughter was mailed in a cardboard container and sat on my front porch w/o my knowledge for who knows how long. I took care in getting the roots unwound and found it to be rootless. (Now I understand so much after your description of the store bought orchids and their condition). I have had it in a wine glass w 1/3 filled w water for about 3 weeks. It is growing a root and a new leaf. I’m very pleased but now I realize I need to let it have more light. It has 2 dehydrates leaves and 1 that is good. Thank you so much for your wonderful instruction!!
Can you clarify….this video shows keeping bottoms of roots in water, yet another shows water 1 day a week, then dump out water, love your videos and thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I have 62 Orchids. Over half of them are the Mini Phals. I have trouble with them blooming again. Water culture is fun and they are doing great with new roots and leaves. LOVE your videos.
I'm new to orchid growing but some videos say you need a night time temperature drop... (You'll have to look for blooming my orchid videos as I don't remember more than that.) Also try a sunnier spot like she mentioned in this video. 💖🌞🌵😷
I am so impressed about the capacity of adaptation of an orchid. Changing it's roots to the level of hydratations they get. I would like to know what kind of fertilizing you are using on your orchids. Thanks
Florida, weather right now is 30 to degrees at night and about 50 during the day. Most of my neighbors Orchids are indoors for the winter months and she puts them back outside in the Spring. The neighbor has gifted me an Orchid And I’m so afraid I will kill it, but I am so happy I ran across your channel. I love the fact that you are so detailed in your explanations, live in New York, my hometown ( relocated to Florida,to care for my ailing mother) and Love doggy’s. Thank you, great vlogs.
Lucky Gracie wow! Is that chilly or normal for the area of Florida you are in? I just visited Coco beach Florida last week and it was low 80's which was nice! Thanks so much for watching!
Awe!!! The Kitty. I subscribed to the idea that the stringy part of the roots bring moisture. I have an orchid with no roots n I wish I hadn’t listened to someone that suggested I cut them off 😩😩😩 I saw a UA-camr that inverted the leaves into the water. I’m not sure if I should cut off the the tip of the stem but I think I just do more damage.
Danielle, please tell me, have you ever grown a small cymbidium in water culture ? And would you consider them “. …oncidium types…”. I am going to try… but sure would appreciate guidance!
Are there any tips you can give me for mini orchads? I have one that was beautiful, purchased from my local grocer (I wasn't aware of the bad care they seem to get) and it first lost it's blooms, then it's leaves started falling off.
Yay! Great video. I feel better about what you said RE the orchids you buy at the Trader Joe’s of the world. Many of mine have died and I’m on my last 4 phals. I love FWC but transferred the to LECA in self watering pots. I’ve also added grow lights which hopefully will help with roots. I also just saw your fertilizer video and I will listen to your advice. Hopefully this works. Great to have you back!
Great Video I was wondering if you have any advice how to make them bloom? I’ve had mine in water culture for a year and it’s grown A lot of air roots and Leafs but no Stems.
Hi Danielle, i am watching your video this morning about water culture, i got dendrobium and cattleya that there are no roots if i will put it in water culture, how many days on water
I just wanted you to know you’ve help me greatly with the water culture I have 27 orchids I’ve lost three because I had them too much in water. I love my orchids they’re doing great thank you for your recordings I watch you all the time
Hi Danielle, I don’t know what video I watched but I have 2 phala without roots. Can you tell me how often I let the stem tip rest in the water & for how long? I love your videos
Hi, is the tea bag method in place of fertilizer or in addition to fertilizer? And can I use it before Danielle’s 4 week method to get the phals used to water culture? Thank you for the help!😊
Kay Nay do you have the particular video from Rick L. I am having a problem locating it? I unfortunately have 2 orchids that are in ICU right now. Thank you
hi Danielle, fantastic showoff! I'm particularly interested in the one which had almost no root and was rejuvenated with new root and new leave at 12:36, as I'm currently trying to rescue one myself. May I ask, how long did it take for the bare stem to grow new root & new leave? Do I need to give it any supplement other than water and orchid food (is orchid food even suitable?)?
Hi Danielle. Clap, clap, clap! Great video! You had me 100% captivated and roped in. Do you provide extra humidity like one of those misters, since you are growing indoors? Looking forward to your next video on how you add fertilizer to the orchids.
Blanca Acosta thank you! So sweet! I don't have a humidifier, since I use water culture there is a lot of humidity already in the air. My thermostat also shows the humidity so I keep my eye on that. Last winter I grew most of my collection in my bathroom under a grow light so there was no problem giving them humidity. I'm not doing that this year though so I'm going to keep a sharp eye on my thermostat and adjust if necessary! Thanks for watching!
I started putting all my orchids in water culture since I watched your videos because they are all dying in bark medium, so far I'm on observation stage.Thank you so much 👍🏻👌🏼Merry Christmas to you and family
I went crazy buying phals. from retail where they had roots stuffed into compacted spagmoss. But a few died when I tried to put it into bark and the roots just rotted. I'm considering water culture so I can carefully monitor root hydration of root more carefully.
It's a bit heartbreaking seeing them die but I figure it's better to get all the problems upfront so can learn how to correct and not have too much invested in them. And thank you for showing that stem method, there are a few with like 0 roots, might have a chance now :)
Devonly I wish you success with your rescues! Rootless Phals need lots of light. When the leaves go limp it often means roots are about to pop out so hang in there! You can save them!
Hi, Daniellle, I’ve just started with putting some of my orchids in water culture, and I’ve seen a number of videos from people who tried water culture for a number of years and then decided that it wasn’t working as well as moss or other media. What routine do you use to make your orchids happy?
Hi Danielle. I saw somewhere on UA-cam in Singapore that how they replant cattleyas was first cut off most of the old roots and let new ones grow. Perhaps heard on more than one occasion. Anyways is a bold experiment and not for the faint at heart. I must say I’ve tried on a sharry baby as a last resort and have success on my side after struggling with it for more than five months with the old roots dying. So I said, off with your head and gave it a crew cut -and a month later new roots began appearing. But definitely not for phals. Definitely !!! Phals I’ve been using microfiber draped to roots with velman. Especially those with only air roots.
Thomas M I did that with my Sharry Baby as well. It was impossible to clean her root system and they were so acidic that they were dropping the water PH into the low 4 range which was not good. So I chopped her roots off and she recovered just fine. Haven't tried it with a Cattleya yet but it's something to consider.
Danielle's Orchid Ranch I think orchids with a strong back up system with bulbs or rhizome with multiple bulbs, such as the oncidiums, dendrobiums and cattleyas might do well if healthy enough. But... I'm still in the learning stage with only a year on orchids. You're east of NYC ? I'm west, which could mean Seattle, but only half hour by auto across the Hudson. In our regent is a little more harsh than in Florida and perhaps needing more tweeking to get these little guys going.
@@daniellesorchidranch1591 I've noticed the benefits from using RO water including the health of my orchids being that I won't be stingy with clean water. I use MSU ( I THUNK it is, Michigan State University) and am able to experiment with cal/mag kelp, and Epson salt. Also because the water has no limit except for the limited output per day, I use it to rinse orchids of salt buildup as well as washing containers and instruments. I'm in northern jersey next to Paterson and keeping my fingers crossed this won't be a snowy season. Oh, don't be expecting to be excited about the taste of RO water. Drinking water needs minerals and think it'll taste better if a bit acidic. Food for thought. Thanks.
Hi,thanks for the video, I have a question though why marbles in the base? are they of any benefit to the orchid or they are just for decoration? I’ve put one of mine in water culture inspired by you, I’m keeping fingers crossed, if successful I’ve got another one to experiment with 😃
Zodidi Kusi-Appiah the glass beads are to provide humidity without getting the base of the plant wet. I use them with Oncidiums and Dendrobiums so I can hydrate the plant without getting the base wet so it won't rot. Thanks for watching!
Hi Danielle I have a Harliquin phalanopsis. That has no roots. I live in Florida. The humidity is over 50%. I also follow Danny from orchid nature. She does the damp spagnum moss method to encourage root growth. I used it on a orchid that had one fat root. It worked. However I tried it on this orchid I am concerned about and nothing. I feel like it has been longer than three months. It has one long string of a root I took velamin off. I am considering water culture as a last resort. I am getting impatient and desperate. Crown looks good, and stem looks good. Just thinking plant might just be so sick it doesn’t have energy to come back. Do u have any suggestions. I really appreciate it. I am currently watching all videos on water culture. It’s like an experiment now
Hi Danielle , so I have a Phal with no roots , but a healthy stem . I’ve got it set up for W C just right above the level of the water , distilled water , Any suggestions ?
Hello. I have one orchid with 2 mini roots on top but only one this string very short. I will put in water this one string can i save my orchid? This 2 mini roots cant touch the water yet.
Arita Karamiševa you can soak the stem for 20-30 minutes every couple of days to help hydrate the plant. Just don’t put the water to high. Just the very bottom of the stem is enough.
Ok , it’s not touching any water just hovering over the water , you think I’ll get good results this way ? And thanks for responding , appreciate your time
You can occasionally soak the bottom of the stem for about 30 minutes just not to frequently because if it’s getting enough water it’ll have no reason to grow roots And no problem, glad if I can help!
I just started my water culture orchid (phenolopsis) about 3 weeks ago, my problem is sometimes it gets some aphid like coating & I read that all I have to do is brush it away with a sterile brush, I have roots growing & some are dying. All the leaves are hard & green. Is this condition normal? Thanks
What kind of containers do you use for water culture (Plastic or glass ). I have all my orchids in glass containers (water culture) but only one in plastic. I see all the roots becoming red in the plastic containers. Any suggestions ?
Kanaka Rs I do grow mine in glass containers. If you have concerns about the roots of the plant in plastic you might consider moving it to a glass container. I do have a few orchids that grow red root tips instead of green though so maybe the roots are naturally red? You could look the plant up online to find out.
One thing I'd like to say hopefully before you add any Color dye to the water. I once had two phals pass a purple one and a white one that was colored blue. The purple one put out two pups, the white/blue put out one. And it didn't make it. The purple ones though mad from falling on the floor are both still with me. Am not saying the dye had anything to do with it but I can't say it didn't ether.
Hi Danielle, really love 💗 your videos. I have an orchid that has 1 leaf and a tip of a leaf merging out, as well as several keikis on both of her stems. One of the keikis is growing a new leaf and the keiki is possibly getting bigger. She has an air root that I try to keep hydrated with a paper towel and some stranglers with no velamin in full culture water that I am desperately trying to save. First how long do you soak the tip of the stem for, would you recommend that for my orchid and do you also recommend I cut the keiki off at the stem or cut the stem which has 3 other small keikis attached to it? Or just leave it alone for now. If you’d like I can try and send you a pic of my phal. Please help me save my baby! I have been growing orchids in bark for about 4 years and all of a sudden they all started going downhill until I started watching your videos. I have 1 phal that so far is in great shape that has been in bloom every year. But the one Phal I am asking for help with is bye far the worst. She came to me from my doctors office and had such beautiful blooms on her. So I am desperately trying to save her as well as her babies. I apologize I did not mean to draft a book. Thank you! Mya Taylor
Mya Taylor some Phalaenopsis just are keiki makers. I have one perfectly healthy Phalaenopsis that likes to grow Keiki's on her flower spikes. However sometimes the mother plant will put out Keiki's because it is dying. One of my Phalaenopsis did this. If the mother plant only has one leaf and all her roots are dead this may be the case. Once the Keiki's have roots a few inches long you can remove them from the mother plant. Keiki's will drain the mother plant so if she is not dying but is struggling to stay alive the Keiki's will keep draining her nutrients so I recommend removing them when the roots are long enough. If the mother plant was in great shape this would not be necessary right away but it sounds as if she is not doing very good. I hope that works for you. If you are going to soak the stem you can soak it for 20 minutes to a half hour, basically until the stem is saturated and then remove from the water.
Thank you for responding! The one thing that concerns me is that there are other smaller keikis on the same stem that I am trying to save as well. And one of the smaller baby keikis is underneath the actual keiki that’s still growing slowly, but not rooted yet. So if I wait until the main keiki has rooted, should I cut the stem to try to save all the keikis, or should I just cut off the main keiki that’s rooted. Boy I wrote allot and I hope that made sense.☺️ And like you, I don’t give up. Can I send you a pic? Anyway love watching and happy holidays! Thank you, Mya
Mya Taylor you'd really have to evaluate what's needed. Keiki's won't survive without roots, if you remove them before they have roots they will most likely die. It seems one of them does have roots though so at least you have one with a good chance at survival.
Danielle's Orchid Ranch thank you for responding. What is your current fertilizer and do you also use it on your orchids with no steps or roots? I’m sorry, I’m trying to play doctor.☺️ My orchids are not responding positively to the bark medium anymore and I’m trying to figure out why they are unhappy. I have my oldest orchid which has bloomed every year(fingers crossed 🤞), now her leaf tip it turning a little yellow and brown after I gave her some fertilizer. Frustrating! Anyway love watching! Thank you and Merry Christmas!🎄 Mya
It really depends on what type of orchid, some can bloom more then once a year, some only once a year. Some blooms can last months and others only weeks or even days. But the most common orchids which are Phalaenopsis orchids typically bloom once a year and the blooms can last for over 3 months. There are exceptions to that as well but typically that’s the case.
Susan Brown me too but there those that doubt. They say it's surviving off the energy and nutrients stored in the leaves. 🤷♀️ either way I'm glad they survive
Did you say a keiki out of the crown of your phalaenopsis? This video is old but I hope you see this comment because I have some very specific videos on my channel, I think the same thing happened to me. If this interests you let me know and I will give you the channel name and the names of the videos so that you can watch them. Just let me know where you want the information here in the comments Maybe by email or some other form of social media.
Hi Danielle, I converted all my 18 orchids from semi-hydroponic to water culture a week ago, and luckily 16 of them seem to be handling the change fine. However, I prepared the water (distilled) to be about 6 ph (using ph Down), yet when I measure the water in the containers today, all went up to about 7 to 7.4. I couldn't figure out what's happening. I put some pebbles in the containers to raise some of the roots, could that be the reason? Actually I measured the water ph with pebbles to be just between 6 to 6.3. So I am really puzzled. Any advice? Thanks.
ann wang I think you may be right about the pebbles. There may have been something on them that raised the PH. It's the only thing I can quess that would be the cause.
ann wang that is an option or you could try boiling the pebbles in water to remove whatever may be lingering on them. I use glass pebbles so they can be easily cleaned and other then algae not much can grow on them.
Thanks for replying. Last evening I took all my pebbles out of the containers, wash the containers, and added newly prepared distilled water at ph 5.8. I measured this morning, and all my water went up to 6.25-6.4! I used General Hydrophonics PH Down which is supposed to be stable. You mentioned in one of your videos that your water ph actually would go down as time passes and water evaporates. I am beating my brains out to figure why my water ph goes up for no reason. Are my orchids missing on major nutrients such as calcium if my water ph does not get down to 5.8?
ann wang I have to say the PH going up is not usually the problem people have. If you leave the water for a few days does it continue to go up or does it eventually start dropping back down? I usually start with a PH of 6.1-6.2 for my orchids and the PH drops significantly by the time I change the water, which I do once a week. Maybe check the PH again in a few days.
My only concern with that water would be possible fungal or bacterial spores from the humid environment. Humidity outside usually is accompanied by good air flow. In a humid room in the house there is typically no air flow and that can lead to bacteria/mold etc. if it’s a large room with good airflow then it could be ok. Ultimately it is up to you if you feel comfortable using it.
@@daniellesorchidranch1591 thanks for answering me. My studio is converted one car garage. It is climate controlled because my husband and I have expensive musical instruments in there.
Thomas M I live on Long Island so not to far from the Hudson.
I too am still learning, I don't think I'll ever be done learning, lol
Thanks.
Thomas M I forgave an RO unit that I do plan on using some time, lol. Whenever I have the opportunity to set it up.
Do you add anything into the water to fertilize them?
Hi,thanks for the video, I have a question though why marbles in the base? are they of any benefit to the orchid or they are just for decoration?
I’ve put one of mine in water culture inspired by you, I’m keeping fingers crossed, if successful I’ve got another one to experiment with 😃
Zodidi Kusi-Appiah the glass beads are to provide humidity without getting the base of the plant wet. I use them with Oncidiums and Dendrobiums so I can hydrate the plant without getting the base wet so it won't rot. Thanks for watching!
Yay great to see you back Danielle ! X
How do you Deal when going on vacation?
How do you choose the glass you put them in??
Gosto dos seus videos, so gostava de saber quando muda a agua, e se sempre deicha a otcjd sempre na agua
It’s like an experiment now
Hello, what about orchid San nook, can it also grow in water colture?
Hi Danielle , so I have a Phal with no roots , but a healthy stem . I’ve got it set up for W C just right above the level of the water , distilled water , Any suggestions ?
Don’t get too worried when the leaves wrinkle and dehydrate, that’s a sure sign roots are coming!
And thanks for responding , appreciate your time
You can occasionally soak the bottom of the stem for about 30 minutes just not to frequently because if it’s getting enough water it’ll have no reason to grow roots
And no problem, glad if I can help!
@@daniellesorchidranch1591 thanks Danielle , water culture is new to me .
Thanks
Love your channel ❤😊
Mmm 6 months whatever happened is dun by now. Worked out well I hope.
I did use blue dye and it did show up in the leaves.
Fortunately the orchid is still alive and growing new roots and leaves!
Hi Danielle, glad to see you back 😄👍💚. Yay water culture!
💚💚💚
non-toxic food colouring is a slightly gentler option...
Jacqueline Donoghue food coloring is what I meant to say, lol. I don't even know where I would get dye.
@@daniellesorchidranch1591 {laughing} Totally showing my geek colours here but you can get chemical dyes from science sites that supply schools etc...

can i use filtered water?
How can I save a single keke?
Thank you!
Mya Taylor
Oh and I live in Henderson, NV.
Thank you,
Mya
Thank you and Merry Christmas!🎄

can I use clear plastic vase?
Why the leaf limpy down in water culture?
Is there somewhere I can message you with a question?
hi can you grow Jewel Orchids in water culture, very little on utube
Hello! How often do orchids bloom??
It really depends on what type of orchid, some can bloom more then once a year, some only once a year. Some blooms can last months and others only weeks or even days. But the most common orchids which are Phalaenopsis orchids typically bloom once a year and the blooms can last for over 3 months. There are exceptions to that as well but typically that’s the case.
@@daniellesorchidranch1591 Thank you
This was sooo interesting, thanks!
i must try this
how open you change the water?
I would think that if the orchid is alive and growing that it is getting nutrients.

Are there times when you leave them out of water
Cindy England yes, certain orchids have “dry” days
Why some with no beads
do you use Leca ever?
No but a lot of semi hydro growers do
Hi Danielle,
I converted all my 18 orchids from semi-hydroponic to water culture a week ago, and luckily 16 of them seem to be handling the change fine.
@@daniellesorchidranch1591 Thanks Danielle. Should I just add more ph Down to balance out the pebble effect?
ann wang that is an option or you could try boiling the pebbles in water to remove whatever may be lingering on them.
I have all south facing windows (direct sun all day)... Can I put phalaenopsis orchids in the windows??
I live in Corpus Christi TX and it is very humid here. I have a dehumidifier in my studio. Can I use the water from the dehumidifier for my orchid?
My only concern with that water would be possible fungal or bacterial spores from the humid environment. Humidity outside usually is accompanied by good air flow. In a humid room in the house there is typically no air flow and that can lead to bacteria/mold etc.
if it’s a large room with good airflow then it could be ok.
Ultimately it is up to you if you feel comfortable using it.
@@daniellesorchidranch1591 thanks for answering me. My studio is converted one car garage. It is climate controlled because my husband and I have expensive musical instruments in there.
