- How to remove the speed limiter on a mid drive ebike
In this video I'll show you how to bypass, hack or trick your electric bike speed limiter on the e bike speed controller so you can go faster! It's a very easy hack and is easily reversed if you need to get it back to factory settings.
Wel this worked better than i expected
Did it work for you
Do sixteen mile range and you'll find out it will stop running
Absolutely brilliant. I’ll just use this tip for a bit of fun now and again.
So easy.
Thank you!
Omg, just done this tool 5 mins and it’s flying 🤣🤣 nice one dude
ZIP TIES MY FRIEND...NOT DRILLING THE FRAME
Yes yes...we've been over this.
Did it ever break where that hole is or is it still holding strong
Made some sick come up when he got the drill out!!
I drilled holes all over my bike and it weighs hardly anything anymore. I keep getting a whistling sound when the wind blows through the holes.
I tried zip ties but they wont hold it together at all. (just joking)
That’s got to be the worst thing to do, even on a senior’s tricycle.
So 4 years later and that hole has caused zero issues. Still... agree. Use a zip tie
Great hack.... This guy is always thinking of quick, cheap, effective ways to make things work! (Looked a bit dodgy riding the bike with your phone and trying to video....)
Will this work on Cyclotricity Revolver Hybrid 250w , as i just got one coming next week ,
never seen an ebike with a magnet, but cool idea. My ebike doesnt have that setup. However I did lookup what color wire on my bike is the limiter.
Hi, Will this hack works with Bosch Active line 2014 (1st gen?). I don't think any restriction or software limitation applied to these early models.
Sorry just wondering if you needed to buy the extra magnet or if you could just use that one
What if you just move the magnet on the wheel away from the sensor? Would that not fool the sensor?
Will this work on a lectric XP bike?
Hi David. What's your mid drive motor?
Hello Daniel, Wrote to you a little while ago. Now that the summer is practically over here in Europe I wanted to start the hack process on my GIANT ebike, but surprise, the firm GIANT are not stupid, to take off the sensor the surprise was a nippled torx screw, in other words I needed a hollow torx screwdriver which I didn't have to take the sensor off. I managed to send out an order to Amazon for a set of 32 pcs to fix on a screw driver. The order will be arriving tomorrow so I'll keep you posted on the follow up, Cheers mate.
You are not alone. It took me more than 30 minutes to find the right scredriver, because my Giant has chain protecting case, I could hardly see the screw! I have a 'Giant GrandTour E+ 1 2018' with a Yamaha motor (60 Nm, 250 W). I tried this method. After putting the magnet on the pedal I got two outcomes, 1) the motor works only a little bit, basically it is not working. 2) After changing the position of the magnet several times at last the motor works as before the delimiting, namely the Ebike moves maximal 25 Kmh. In both case the speed display display from 4 to 99 kmh. Anyone has any advice? Thanks in advance! My guss is: there is a maximal working limit for this Yamaha motor and the motor working limit cannot be surpassed even we change the position of the magnet.
Do someone have problem when all put back in original state? When I put it back on yamaha pw st, display is blinking (range, odo etc) and speed sensor doesnt pick up spee (0 km /h) motor is workimg, I ve tested through diagnostics , and in diagnostic program is showing no of turnings of the wheel
Bike is haibike alltrail 6
Would it work on a Carrera vengeance ebike?
It works,brilliant.
I have a specialized como bike how can I do this on this bike
Will this work with bikes with the latest updates ?
Hey this worked like a charm. Thanks for the video. My Giant explore stock would do 32km/hr and then cut out/in. After your mod I can get to ~44km/hr. I personally find that 36km/hr is a comfortable riding speed for backroads in Alberta mountains. Hardest part was running to the hardware store to get a tamper proof torx. Enjoying the bike a lot more and no problems as of yet
I would of just used an Allen bolt like me on my next bike, and pitlock has thing to put in to make the Allen bolt unable to remove without pitlock key you get
Is it still holding up? Albertan here as well. Was thinking about doing this to my bike.
How do you hack the jetson bolt pro that doesn't use app?
This worked like a dream for me. I would now like to fit a 38 or 40 tooth chainwheel to my Giant Talon ebike to enable me to maintain a higher speed with lower pedal revolutions. To date I have not been able to locate one in Australia. If anyone can assist would be appreciated.
Does this work on prophet ebikes
I wonder if this can work on ebikes with motors in wheels?
What's type of screw head is on the sensor please
thank you Daniel, it's work for my ebike...
You can also change Prefrance of the size of tires. Only if you have smaller than 28inch or 700c. Setting that wheel size on 26 inch ( goes up 1.5 to 2 mph more throttle only)and smaller will increase speed unless you have a locked controller than you have to listen to this video and others...
it give you just a fake speed, the controller need your tire size to calculate your speed....
Does this also work with shimano?
Will this work on BeeCool models?

Is there a trick to removing the limiter? I've tried a screwdriver and an allen key but nothing worked
Hi Daniel. I just purchased the LIV Val E+2 ebike, it looks like it has the similar motor sensor to yours, how did you get it off? It looks like the manufacturer has tried to make it difficult to detach it with a screw ive never seen before. Dying to get this over 15mph its so lame at that speed!!
DoubleT I’ve got the same issue with my Giant Explore E
Megan Lim You need a hex screwdriver, only way to do it, cheap on amazon.
Instead of drilling a hole you can zipped tie it or used double sided tape. Great video 👍🏽
I did this with zip ties too, I would not drill into the frame that would give me a panic attack :D
What if the ebike is only a 250w front hub motor (pedal asist) and doesn't have the magnet on the wheel you're explaining. Is that bike's motor just too weak to travel more 16mph?
This won't work with hub motors.
Thank you ! That was doing my head in
Will the battery run out way faster
Is this work on all types of electric bikes?
what happens if you remove the magnet, I guess you tried? 0mph ? no assist ? i would think a torque sensor based mid drive would still work unless they programmed no assist if the speedometer doesnt detect speed.
How old is your bike e-bikes have boxes now not magnetic to over coke this issue
Does it work for Bosch gen3
Do it work on syncrone drive sport
Can't do this to the bosch xc motors, they have add software to stop it been done , found today 24th of April 2021
hey curious if a year later you have found a workaround with the bosch motors.
Does it work on bosch motor
Will this work on Bosch 4th gen motor 2021 cube reaction 500?
It did not work on Shimano E-Steps..The system shut down and displayed sensor error..I assume this will be the same for Bosh
Do you always need to pedal for this to work or can you be on full motor mode and it’ll still work?
That's the issue I see with it. Surely if you're coasting (no pedal rotation) the motor will think you're stopped, and get somewhat confused when you suddenly ask it for assistance again? Most motors now are designed with some ramp-in rather than sudden power so it seems to me this would result in an odd feel to the assistance?
Thank you Daniel, just tried it om my naicisports x5 with bafang motor and it works well speed beyond 30km/hr... can somebody give me an idea on the ebike performance if used for a longer and continuous ride...ty
Many times there is a limiter connected to the battery going to the controller. Another way is to see what type of language your controller /screen uses like KT for one eg and get a new computer for your controller. Which he kind of mentions.
Any chance you’d know if this would work on a Bosch smart motor?
No idea sry
I'm confused as you say positive and negative when on magnets it is normally north and south from when I hear it
What happens if you just take the magnet off?
My ebike can go 35kph but there's gotta be a way with out it damaging the frame to make it go faster with out drilling any holes any tips?
As other commenters have said, I should've just cable tied the sensor on.
Glue
I thought I came up with a clever original hack to make my bike faster, now I come across this video... Again I'm not original 😂
hi, enjoyed watching your video👍, no.1, id like to know, how does this hack effect your battery gauge??
im thinking, if your going faster, you will be using alot more power, which i assume, drains battery faster.
Yeah it'll use a little more battery... but a lot of the energy is required to get you up to top speed, not as much required to maintain top speed.
But yes overall you'll use more battery. But that's a small price to pay for the annoying cut in cut out of a speed limiter
what s the exact size ur magnet that u bought have?
Check the comments I posted a link
Thanks for the video! Got the same bike and worked a treat.
Do you mind sharing the URL to the magnet you used?
I've got a huge one taped on at the moment, and another which was too small to pick up.
Also, once in your top gear, does your electric motor cut it and out until you have a steady ready of about 9km/h according to the speedo?
I find if I peddle at about 8km/h according to the speedo while in top gear, the motor is on for a second, off for a second, on, off.
@@idobbim that's your limiter... Mine doesn't do that
Hi, l have it sorted but another thing came up after let's sai 2 minutes padaling it's just gets harder like elctric engine stops helping for a minute than comes back up, why is that?
Thats the software in the bike,
Of u don't want the error you need to reset your motor to the dealer
Srry about my englisch
Is putting the Magnet and the Sensor closer to the Center of the wheel not affecting the speed, as it works on the Pedal?l
nope because it's only measuring the rpm. the diameter of the wheels is built-in the controller. if the controller allowed to change the wheel size you wouldn't need any hardware hack, you would just change it to the smallest size as explained in the video
So I bought my uncle's 2021 Polygon Path E5 off him and it's max is 32km/h but was limited to 25km/h when it was sold in Australia. With a 504Wh battery that's some bullshit. After one ride to work today I'm looking to remove it, I sit at 35ish pedalling anyway, so this would be ideal. It has the Shimano Steps motor, my uncle said there's a limiter wire installed? Didn't see this sensor you speak of...
Might have to open the motor.
Edit
Def no sensor like the video.
So removed the battery pack and removed the left side motor cover and only see 2 wires that def look factory installed. Need to do some research 😟
Just tried this and I keep getting error 21, what am I doing wrong, thx
Ohhhh I'm going to remove some of the magnets from my PAS bike to see if it will work as well, being the PAS magnetics are on a small wheel hub on mine. If this idea works I will do a update, but I have HUGE doughts.
what problems if any did you discover?
Pas is Yamaha bikes in Japan no?
QUESTION: Wont the manufacturer know that I've messed around with the bike If I ever have a problem with the motor and I have to have it repaired?
That’s the chance you take when you knowingly break the law😂👍
This won’t work for mine. The motor is on the front wheel. There are no magnets on any of the wheels.
I have a Bridgestone Tb1e
What bike is this
Has the frame broken yet where you drilled the screw into it ?
Nope
Daniel Caigou how did you find this warehouse ebike? Was looking at buying one... is it any good?
Hey, yes it is good for the cost. Its not as good as the preicy ones for sure, but for what I paid it has well and truly done me proud. Only whinge is the brakes probably need an upgrade for the power
just tried that but in no time it goes into error (102 code on bosh readout): though it reads a lower speed alright... what could I be doing wrong ?
It doesent work on some bosh systems
Bosch has put in software to stop this be done,
@@tinker-time 💩😢

why not add more sensors on the back wheel ? ?
Do you still have the bike?
That doesn't work on Bafang Max Drive 250w on a Fischer EM 1865 ebike. It works but when you stop pedalling you get the 21 Error.
Use pass code 0520
Interesting concept. And see all those comments and other alternatives ... when are the makers of e-bikes just going to acknowledge that limiting at 25 is ridiculous when so many people can pedal a normal bike faster than that and fit people are riding them - especially the e-mountain bikes. When it hits 25 on the flat it feels like pedaling with a handbrake on - ridiculous! .
It's imposed by them by law. In many countries it's not legal to motor assist a bicycle beyond the 25 km/t. Obviously this is a software limitation which can be worked around like this, or with a chip. I don't have a mountain bike but I imagine you would only turn on the assist when you are climbing up hill and need help in order to not get so exhausted - after all, it's going down-hill that's fun.
Agree 100 %
Before my E-bike my average speed was 36km/h. Now it's 24km/h 😤
They have to for import purposes. Today 99/100 of then you can just go into the setting and change the max speed ezpz.
Some also have a hard limiter between the batt and controller you can unplug to keep an eye out for.
Though for 25 bucks you can just upgrade to a computer that can show all settings which I did for a friend. Actually, we got him a new controller (22a to 28a) and a computer bundled for 50 bucks and his ebike goes 38mph from 20ish mph.
Mostly a government mandated control in oz
Wow. Drilled thorough the frame!!!
its all good
Hai.. i ready to install but.. error speed sensor...
has anyone tried this on ananda m100 mid motor without any dangerous electrical issues that might ruin the motor
Does IT work on evry e bike?
And why not add a magnet on your bikewheel itself.. if the rotation speed is what your after.
This didn't work on my Shimano e steps 8000
What if you dont place the magnet
Anyone know what the rotation difference between a full crank rotation vs. the wheel rotation on a 28" wheel? I'm curious as to what the % difference in perceived rotation vs actual rotation after modifying.
🤦 that depends on the gear ratio, say front cog has 44t and you on the 11t cog on the cassette then each pedal turn be 4 turns of the wheel, front can be anything like between 22-72t saying the range you can get but it depends on crank, the 72t is more likely on TT bikes or track bikes, rear is like 10-52t depending on cassette you have, think mountain bike can go up to 52t but most older have 34t max and smallest is 10t or 11t or even 12t normally
I mainly ride 44/11 on mountain bike and 53/11 on road bike
would depend on what gear your in
..and what if you just roll? The magnet on the pedal will be inactive, and the error code may will appear !!?
If you roll you're not pedaling... so the motor won't activate. Just like with a regular mid drive.
Omg... It worked very well can't still I can't believe. Thanks a lot
till what speed does yours go?
@@jerryx2000 up to 80km/h
@@Deggoo that's too slow I was expecting 400kmh
@@jerryx2000 Yeah Japanese maglev and sht
If you added another magnet on the wheel as in having 2 magnets
Does it speed up walk assist mode too?
I don't have/use that feature but I doubt it. That's usually a fixed speed and doesn't rely on peddling to tell it to go.
Just my gut feeling though
no
I've tried this on my voodoo bizango e I keep getting a error
That's because the firmware detected that your cadence matches exactly to the wheel rpm. This "hack" no longer works. You need to go to the dealer to have the motor reset (if they'll do it as the motor is now no longer covered by your warranty probably). There is a rumour that pedaling the bike in limp mode for 90 minutes will reset the error (flip it over and turn the creaks by hand, it's easier). I don't know if that's true because now I run a shimano motor. Good luck
I have the same
@@givemeakidney does it make problems for the electric parts of the bike of you go 45/ 50 km/h??
@@jelmerjansen328 no, it makes problems for the rider if they're caught, or if they need to use the warranty.
@@givemeakidney okay thnx!
what happens if you just remove the magnet altogether?
An error code
@@danielcaigou but everything else works right?
How has the bike been since the hack? Any component went bad?
Been fine
Plz.. Information me Aliexpress- magnet size..
unfortunately this method doesn't work on shimano step 5000. After few km of riding goes to error E014. Software recognise on replacement of magnet.
Have did you fix the E014 error?
Simple question , why just not simply not move the receptor, and just add a magnet on the wheel at the opposite? like having 2 magnet so you 2x the rate? not an idea ?
That would halve your max speed to 12.5 km/h
@@Hallands. ok 👌
@@seba5190 What we need is an „blinking“ magnet which only activates the sensor every two turns of the wheel 😉 but that’s easier said than done…
I don’t see my speed thing on my bike ?
not working on shenguyi mid motor. i used ordanaire magnet. magnet is not important i think......
I just have 1 question, does this work on the old Boach performance line cx. 1st gen?
Easy to test... Just run a magnet in front of the sensor a few times to see if you get a reading. If you do it'll work.
will this work on a bosch system?
Every bike with a magnet in the wheel
be careful, another commenter pointed out that bosch systems notice they're being fooled with, and they stop working. You cannot reset it at home.
So what's your top speed after the hack? And what are your thoughts/experiences a year+ later?
Thoughts after a year? It worked great! cruising speed is about 33kph easy riding, can get it to ~40kph peddling hard on flat Regret not cable tying the sensor rather than drilling the frame... the comments section certainly corrected me on that one... That being said I've had no problems with the mod, and the frame is still intact despite the small hole haha. Once I lost the magnet which was funny. Parked up next to a metal bike rack and the magnet jumped onto the bike rack, but I noticed when I left and the ebike wouldn't engage. Went back and found the magnet. That was about all that's gone wrong since I made this video.
What a waste of time, I can do a faster speed of over 30 mph, on the flat, peddling hard, on my aero road bike, with no motor.
@@stevezodiac491 What a dumb comment
@@stevezodiac491 what are you commenting here for then??? we all can do that 30mph on a road bike , no motor, your not exceptional..
Will it burn out battery ect?
hasn't yet. speed limit is more a physical safety thing than motor safety
What's done is done. Zip tie the next if it applies. We all learn from each other. Drilling can also weaken that area.
Is it damaging to a Bosch E-bike?
might be as apparently you can't do it on latest firmware cos they're gay bois
@@UA-camSupportTeams I have just bought a Raleigh Motus with an active line motor now my question is if I will do the magnet trick I might make the software lock up the motor right?
@@andreibugariu208 I have no idea. Bosch have stated they are actively preventing magnet hacks. Lucky I have a brose motor on older firmware and it works fine. These companies are typical German Nazis. You own the thing and they are preventing you from doing what you want with it
As this will upset your speed and ODO reading, wouldnt it be easier to simply move fw or bw the magnet on the wheel to make it not readable by the sensor? Doing this it would always look like you are standing still whilst you are going as fast as much as your gear and your pedal frequency allows...? Where am I wrong?
Wouldn't work. No input from the pedal sensor = no motor assist.
IQ 1000! 😆 Thanks!
Thanks! But i want to know gow fast im going, or i would love to do that! I ride my son in a stroller to kindergarten, so i want to know how fast im going... But love the trick
Why not change the program with the display.
Can't on this model
Can this sexy looking method put my bosch active line into limp mode at all dude?
