Craftsman Garage Door Opener Just Stops

- My garage door just intermittently quits working. Not a sensor or remote issue. The Power transformer has a bad solder joint on the circuit board. Watch as my friend Chris and I tackle this issue. Some footage was lost due to a dead camera battery, but you'll get the idea....
I was having similar weird behavior. I tried resetting the connectors. Then found your video. The same pin on mine had a cracked solder joint. I cleaned off the old solder and resoldered the whole transformer and it's fixed! Thanks for this quick video.
Thanks! Same problem - saw hairline crack with magnifier and re-soldered. This is an example of how great sharing info on the web can be.
You literally solved my problem in the first 90 seconds of your video. There were broken safety beam wires. I feel so dumb for not checking this first.. You guys rock!
I'm so Happy I saw this video. My garage door opener was acting up and after viewing your video. I banged on it the same way you did, and the power flickered off and on just like your video. I removed the power board and resoldered all the circuit contacts on the board and now its acting the way it should. Thanks again you saved me from buying another garage door opener
This video helped me pinpoint a similar problem on my power board. I was not able to see any problem with the solder under a magnifying glass, but a continuity tester located the problem pin at the corner. I am guessing it is a power or ground pin. Thanks for a great explanation and step by step debugging strategy.
Solid video. Great step by step instructions with accurate explanation. Thank you for the video!
I had the same issue but inside of soldering I have press the transformer couple of times. It seems to fix the issue. Thanks for sharing sir!
This did the trick! Grandma wanted to say Thank You!
Awesome video! Pointed me to the exact same transformer with a cracked solder joint!
That's the exact same problem my garage door opener had - thanks very much for posting this video!
Thank You for your video, just saved me a new opener .Mine was broke at the same one also. Thanks again!
Thanks for the info. My unit had the same problem. I was able to re-solder the connection and got it working again. Thanks again!
Thanks, same solder joints were bad on mine. Saved me from purchasing a new opener.
Thank you for this video. Have the same opener, same problem, you were spot on with a open solder joint coming off the transformer.. I soldered the same set of transformer contacts problems fixed..... Thanks
Exact same thing happened to our garage opener. Fixed following you video! Thanks!!
Believe it or not... the thumping on the unit showing a possible loose connection internally helped me solve the intermittent stopping of my door. The light would go off and on each time I gave it a wack. Took off the side panel and found a faulty connection right away. Thanks.
Lookss like this opener has this problem as common which is sad. Not everybody can do all this. Plus it is not common wear and tear like rollers and springs.
Thanks for sharing.
Wow, thank you so much, mine had same issue, crack solder joint on transformer.
This is great. I have the same problem.
I know how to do basic soldering but am a bit of a noob at circuitry. How did you remove the old solder? Seems like you have a specialty tool for that.
It terms of hooking up your multimeter to test it, what did you connect?
I read in some forums that it's the connector between the two board that fails due to vibration weakening the connection over time but it seems that it was a loose solder joint on the transformer.
Grab yourself a cheap solder sucker from amazon. Looks like a giant spring loaded pen. Use some flux or new solder to increase temperature transfer. Practice a little and you’ll do fine. You can also use solder wick. It’s just copper braid. With a bit of paste on it, it will absorb the solder. I was just using a continuity test between the terminal and contact to show that the solder joint was broken. Vibration can destroy any solder joints so look all around. Good luck.
Hey I almost made a video asking UA-cam about this! Exact problem! Thanks!
Mine you can just lightly tap it.
I have the same problem started today, I will try this.
Good luck.
Our Unit it’s completely shots down , not even turns on!, so we have to weld the circuits for sure after the tests ?, or there is any places in which we can buy the Circuit Boards? We will appreciate your help, Greetings.
That one is pretty old. Not sure if Sears Parts Direct even has them anymore.
Yinz from the ‘Burgh? 😊
I was. Moved about 2 years ago. Got tired of eating Jumbo Samwiches and drinking pop an’nat.
so my sensors are okay, but suddenly, the craftsman garage door opener stopped operating, and the yellow led is slowly blinking, why suggestions? It seems like the control unit that is attached to the wall is not responding, for some reason. Only lights get turned on when you cross the sensor path.
That sounds like the safety lock is on. Check your manual or the internet for your model on how to turn on and off first.
My door just keeps opening even goes back and hits motor ? It use to open and stop fine but now it's like it's running it back to far any videos or suggestions, ? Craftsman motor.
My garage has a similar issue in which it tries to close but stops halfway through, even if there is nothing blocking the infarred laser. So I just end up closing it manually at the end.
Well Lennon if it behaves consistently, remember to check travel and force adjustments.

What kind of solder are you using
I generally use Kester 44 rosin flux solder.
Well I know what I'll be doing tomorrow.
I have the same opener
Does it still work?
Well mine sounds like the motor is jammed up and then just stops. I checked the chain and it’s tight as a drum. I try loosing the chain and then taking the chain off the sprocket and loosing it up. Then put it back on the sprocket. But it just moves about a inch or two then acts like the motor is jammed up again. So I am stumped. Any suggestions?
Will the motor run if you disconnect the chain and try it? Trying to rule out motor, safety devices or door binding and Door spring failure.
