Here I show you how to replace the gear and sprocket kit in your LiftMaster, Sears/Craftsman, and other Chamberlain-made garage door openers made AFTER 1984. If you have a machine that was made before then, unfortunately the kit is discontinued and the machine will have to be replaced.
This is the first how-to video I've made, I had the camera set to close-up but I guess I need a different lens. I also used the editing software that came with my computer and I'm still trying to figure it all out. That aside, thanks for watching, and feel free to comment or message me with questions!

I am a handy and mechanically inclined person. I am 100% sure that I could have figured this out on my own, but I can't thank you enough for putting this video together as it made life SOOOOOO much easier. I watch a lot of "how to" video's on various things, and although this is a long one, it's INCREDIBLY complete on how to do the ENTIRE job. VERY VERY well done.
Discovered the dreaded broken top sprocket. Went immediately to UA-cam and discovered Nick's tutorial. Watched it once and was convinced I could do it. Ordered the part, a few days later pulled up Nick's video and followed step-by-step. Took me a bit longer than it took Nick as I had several trips back and fourth from garage to my shop for tools. After a couple of hours it works perfectly. Thanks Nick. Very well thought out and thorough video. BTW wish I could have seen the classic Mopar better in the background.

I made several mistakes in my initial attempts to replace a broken gear in a 20-year-old Chamberlain. "Ask me how I know." Ri-i-i-ght! Your excellent Demonstration and Comments helped me to correct my errors and finish the job. Nick, you are a good teacher.
One of the best how-to videos I have ever seen. "Ask me how I know." You were clear and concise and explained everything very thoroughly. The upper sprocket bearing was worn and ground down the shaft to an 1/8th of an inch before braking. You gave me the confidence to tackle this job. I had another older craftsman. I took the rail from it and the very intact sprocket and rebuilt the 2006 Chamberlain. It is working great. I never really was sure what I was doing when adjusting my lift. You made that an easy task, also. Well done!

I've never worked on a garage door opener . . . until now. I have viewed many videos and this is the most complete and well explained. I won't bother going into what the other videos lack. You obviously have a complete understanding of all facets of the functions of garage door openers and a command of the English language . . . at the least. I'd hate to dismay your boss and I don't mean to demean your current situation but you have mastered this and it is time to move on up and forward to a more rewarding ($$$) profession or run your own show doing this. Don't stop till you reach your limit or retire. You will be much better for it. Ask me how I know.
I just used this video and the replacement kit from 365 Garage Parts (bought via Amazon Prime, but they deserve a plug) and my garage door is now fixed. This video is fantastic and I can't thank you enough for it. Extremely comprehensive and useful!
I can't thank you enough for your great video. I have a LiftMaster 1280 which is a little different from the model in your video. To remove the worm gear you have to knock out the roll pin which added a little more challenge but not a huge deal. Then I had some issues getting the door travel adjusted after replacing all the parts. All those problems were caused by me not having things adjusted or connected properly. For about $30 in parts it's now working great again. I'm pretty sure I couldn't have done this without your great instructions. I'm sure you saved me a lot of money and I am extremely grateful. Thanks very much for taking the time to post this very well done instructional video. I'm a 65 yr old diy type when possible. Your video gave me the confidence to do the entire job (including changing the motor bearing and worm gear assemblies) without fear of getting stuck in the middle scratching my head. Your discussion regarding what are known causes for particular failure modes was very helpful. The demonstration concerning the limit adjustments and force settings let me finish the job like a professional. Thanks for making the job a straight forward task for the price of the replacement kit as apposed to a potentially costly repair.

Very useful video! Rebuilt my own opener with a $20.00 kit, adjusted it all up, and it's smooth as butter now. **Best** details on doing the job compared to other videos.

Nick, your probably saved me $250 today and I burned a good two thousand calories watching the video, stopping it, climbing the ladder to do a step, then back to the video, back up the ladder... over and over. In the end the only issue I had was getting the motor back in and that was a minor alignment problem that a slight hammer tap solved.

Great tip on where the sprocket is supposed to cycle to. Other vids don't cover this and it is important if you are replacing the trolley and chain and forgot to mark it. Thanks again.

it was a great video ,i just replaced my gears but i do have one question still ,how are you supposed to tighten the chain properly? i can't do it , i tried everything, the side with the tightening bolt and nuts is too tight and the opposite side is too loose ,how come there is no way to just make it tight on both sides at the same time? i tried to spin the wheel for the RPM sensor and the sprocket will turn a little and make the opposite side of the chain a little tighter but then it will start to slip on the motor shaft and the sprocket wont turn any more ,why can't i rotate the sprocket with the chain on it to move the slack to the other side with the tightening bolt? whenever i try and tighten the chain it just tightens the side with the bolt and the other side just stays loose , really fucking frustrating , i don't see why the damn sprocket will not turn to take up the slack from the other side, i don't know what is stopping it from moving , wouldn't it have been better to just put the chain on the sprocket 1st before putting in the motor then it would spin freely without the worm gear being there and i could just tighten the bolt and have the sprocket spin to take up slack from the other side since nothing would be interfering with it turning, now it won't turn at all and tightening the bolt just tightens the one side of the chain , the door works but i am paranoid it is going to break the sprocket or the top bearing under it ,it is taught on the one side with the bolt and on the other side the chain is sagging and hitting the top of outer trolley , i feel like i should take the motor off again to adjust the chain properly because i cant get the slack off the other side
Andrea Mitchell Hi, I didn't see your comment until now, just keep tightening the chain wth the door disconnected. The idler sprocket at the front of the door opener will turn and allow both sides to tighten.
thanks,nope it would not turn, just figured out to tighten it once with the door open and again with it closed , the chain is still loose and makes some noise but good enough i guess, now i am paranoid
about it being too tight and breaking the sprocket bearing
good video though i got it all replaced and all is working fine
i think that it might be better to put the chain on and tighten it before bolting in the motor again so the sprocket on the opener will be able to turn when you tighten the chain and take up slack from both sides
for whatever reason on mine the sprocket at the front did not budge when i tightened the chain and every time i tried it just made it it tight on one side and lose on the other ,doing it with the door open and then closed helped a little but but i still could not get it right

you make this look real easy. it's not 123 but all your tips helped me get mine back together. Even though the gear shaft in the kit was a larger diameter than the bushing in the kit. Ask me how i know.(lol) Thanks for all your help Nick!
One of the best repair videos I have ever seen. Very detailed with lots of precautions, warnings, and tips. I now know that I can do this! Was about to buy a new unit. I also learned that since my sprocket was indeed moving around on top of the chassis, you said that is a worn bearing. My chain had come off. I got it back on & tightened & greased it. When I re-started the sprocket shaft broke. I think the door was closed and I had it in close mode - too much stress I assume. Thanks so much. My LiftMaster is old but still going. Now $25 repair instead of hundreds for a new unit.

Thanks for doing this step-by-step video. I was able to repair my 1991 Sears Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener with a $18.00 kit and a little time this afternoon. It's working like new!

thanks so much! You rock! Like new again! Sprocket gear snapped off this morning when my dog ran through eye beam as door was being closed. The plastic gear was really beat up as well. 12 year old opener and it's our main entry and exit from the house so it gets a ridiculous amount of use. Great video. you saved me a bundle. 31 dollars for kit at Sears vs. 250 for new opener.

Excellent. Ordering parts now! Tip: When recording inside, block all outside windows to keep the bright outside light from confusing the camera.

Great video & my thanks to you! I bought a rebuild kit on Amazon & utilized your steps to rebuild my Sears/Craftsman garage door opener. The only issue that I encountered was the new set screws were a bit too long, so I used the OEM set screws with the new motor shaft collar. Again, well done!

Helped streamline the repair on my opener. I replaced both gears but did not get the downshaft/metal chain gear and top metal bushing mount. Luckily mine were in really good shape still (took apart and regreased) I had to readjust my down limit after install, this may have been for a frost heave (uninsulated garage in Alberta , also have not used opener since it stripped 2 years ago).

Make sure you don't have a broken spring before releasing the door when it's part way, or all the way, open. I learned that one the hard way. ;)

Just excellent. Very helpful and entertaining. Made job so much easier. Two comments for future inclusion: 1) you used vice grips on chain but didn't discuss, @ the "motor control" gear which set open/close setting was totally off because of stripped sprocket must be reset manually. This took me awhile to figure out since I could not get total door travel.

Just finished a gear replacement. One thing I may have missed or it wasn't mentioned. Pretty minor but on my Craftsman there is a cover over the chain sprocket. When you put your gear shaft assembly in check to be sure that the holes in the gear assembly mounting plate for the "ears" on the sprocket cover are correctly lined up. Mine should have been front to back (there are two cover ears)

Thanks very much Nick, for your great instructional video. I've got one at my house with a stripped worm gear and another at my ex wife's house with what seems to be poorly aimed sensors. Thos sensors don't have LEDs so I guess I'll need to use a voltmeter on them.
This video instruction is well done. Please pay attention to his comment on making sure the motor rotates counter clock wise.
Your camera/phone? is fine. It wants to focus on the light dominate window in the background. Easy fixes: 1. Have a light shining on the machine or the operation. A well placed flashlight will do the trick. 2. change the pov and eliminate the light pollution. Thanks for the video. It was very helpful.
As I was replying to another comment, I heard the part where you had the door locked lol. S'alright man...been at this since 2002 and I still do it once in a while.

I would not have been able to do it as easily with only the instructions that came with the the repair kit. And as you stated in your video ... I can't understand how you got thumbs down you obviously have people jealous of you. You did a wonderful job. I have the same type of garage door opener on this video. I purchase a new sprocket gear and replaced it. The garage door goes up down about 2' or less do you think its the RPM sensor? I tried over and over to adjust the Up down lift gears and still it goes up down.. Again great job very informative very knowledgeable keep up the good work young man.
Thank you for the kind words. Did this issue start happening after the sprocket replacement? And does the light bulb flash on the opener after it stops moving? If it does not flash, it is likely the RPM sensor. double check and make sure the RPM wheel is sticking into the sensor at least half way. The most common oops I see is the incorrect thickness washer got installed and that causes the sensor not to read the wheel. If it is all installed properly, most likely the sensor is bad or got damaged. They are cheap to find on the internet.

Thank you very much for the video. The problem I ran into is that the bushing in the kit was super tight And the chains shaft was impossible to get into the bushing. I tried polishing the inside of the bushing in the shaft with Emery cloth, but that didn’t work. I ended up Installing the motor assembly First, then I dropped the chains shaft down and tapped it into the bushing with a hammer gently
