A neighbor friend bought this cassette for me as a gift in 1991. I was 10 years old. The cassette was .69cents in a bin of other cassette's at the dollar store down the street, so I knew where he got it. I don't know if I ever listened to it, maybe once. I didn't know who this band was, who Todd Rundgren or who RHCP(let alone their band history) were. A year later was when "Under The Bridge" became the summer song of 92 and everyone and their mother now knew RHCP. This cassette by that point was buried and hidden somewhere in my room, never knowing the connection. The neighbor friend bought my sister Dazz Band 'Hot Spot"(1984) cassette for .69cents.
I do really hate it isn't on CD but there is always a chance someone with the group could find a way to have the master recording available for download
Great idea. I bet Alain has the masters or can get a hold of them! I want an entire Eleven/early work box set! Containing live shows, can you imagine? Thank you for uploading this too!
Maybe there will be some kind of release for the 40th anniversary in 2025. I close my eyes, open my mind, and see a limited edition box, including the album, all the E.P.s and singles, maybe an extra disc with a live recording. Surely, surely, someone in the industry must share this vision and be ready to make it happen... or is it just that a line was drawn under this group after Mr. Slovak's tragic demise? I can understand how his family may not be ready to sign off on any new releases... but that leaves the fans scraping around the internet and no doubt turning to bootleggers...
@@Kowasi I saw a couple of live shows with Flea on bass and they were amazing. That band is one of the best bands I’ve ever seen, even to this day. I’d love to hear live tracks from that era, including great unreleased songs like “Walking in Parallel Lines.”
No one knows about this band. I can’t remember how I discovered them, but have both the What Is This albums and saw them in a large club in Atlanta and also saw Eleven perform a few years later in a smaller club. I feel like I stumbled onto something really special.
Thank you so fucking much for uploading this my friend, it's sad nobody knows of this relic of a band, I worship the chilli peppers, I have a tattoo of the star of infinity, and am looking for any connection to how the chilli peppers started, makes me wanna look up FEAR, the punk band Flea was in, in the 80's, anyways, thanks again!
The most unheard of and underated unique album that exists. Hillel Slovak is one of my favourite and unique guitarists of all time no one is like him and Ive been around and playing guitar for about 50 years so thats saying something. I have this album on vinyl and its nearly worn out through playing ... my case rests ...... RIP Hillel you are sorely missed but in my eyes never forgotten.
Saw them in New York City, just brilliant. Every track rocks my world. They have an EP that came out before this titled squeezed - Slovak is on that. After what is this came the band Eleven. And Alain’s Solo records.
“Big Raft” = badass song by bassist Chris Hutchinson. I wonder what became of him…Alain’s songs are always stellar but Chris had that little gem in there too. Btw “Waves in the Sand” was a regular part of Eleven’s sets a few years later.
Love that song, such a fan of Chris. Have never been able to find much on him apart from a comment he left on another What Is This video. So cool about Eleven playing Waves in the Sand too, definitely going to have to search for some live videos!
I just found this album in my collection and had no idea I had it or who they are. Popped it on and wow! This is good stuff. The use of backward sounds is very cool and at times they remind me of the Police….. How is this so “unknown”???
What do you care? People are generally stupid with crap taste. This stuff is ok. Not groundbreaking in any way, but well written and everyone playing was talented. I think the producer of this album made it too soft and easily digestible, aiming for the yuppie lounge demographic. Definitely more interesting than most of the RHCP output. Beyond RHCP first two albums, they became a novelty act and were a joke. No wonder Hillel didn't take RHCP seriously. He probably hated being in that band, but had no choice if he wanted to earn a living doing music. RHCP Slovak seems like a costume he wore when playing with that hand. It didn't seem like it was his genuine personality like it was for Flea and Kiedis. He was probably depressed when he died. Self medicating. RHCP are like a Saturday morning cartoon. Nothing any serious musician would aspire to. Even frusciante quit after a couple of years. And Kiedis seems like a tyrant.
Trey Lankford , if you wouldn't mind , I would love to get a copy of this STELLAR LP . I could be found on FB under Christopher A Cordero . Hope to hear back . Chris
Great album,don't forget Hillel👍
Bassist Chris Hutchinson (who replaced Flea) was a producer on our album -- Rare Footage Studios Laguna Beach 1986

Produced by the great Todd Rundgren! Thanks for posting. A shame it was never released on CD.

That would be great if possible.

Pure 🔥straight from the best time in music.

Glad to find this brings back memories of the LA Street scene '85 oh yeah!
THANK YOU for posting the whole album! Huge fan of this album and of Alain. Such great sense of style and melody.
Most welcome

One of my most favorite albums of all time. Thank you!!!!
It's only a matter of time.
Great record. Better than most of what followed
They also had a live record that I haven’t been able to find here yet. Great band with great material and a great producer.
3 out of 5 Live EP
love this album. brings me back to my teenage years in MI. Must have this on CD! Can't find it.
It has never been released on cd i guess. Only several LP's are for sale on discogs...
🤣😅...
Rad!! Thanks for sharing. So hard to find this bastard!
Thanks for uploading!
You're welcome
12 march 2017, only 180 views. Is this band forgotten or people got no curiosity about RHCP beginnings.
Marcin Kiecana the second option, most of people just want to hear the comercial songs from RHCP :(
Not everything is about the Chilli Peppers. I'm here because of Alain Johannes ;)
@@andreadrr Same. The master Alain Johannes.

I loved each and every comment and the music on top 💯🙏
Very cool upload Trey.
Thank you.
First listen. Is this Hillel and Jack Irons' old band?
Yes
Thank you ❤️
Wow, a lot of it's funk and psych elements can be heard on later RHCP records... for example, Chasing Your Ghost reminds me of Purple Stain
ALAIN JOHANNES :)
seems like Mike Patton was listening to that one :)
I love this album!!!!
MARAVILHOSO!!!
Ésto es una reliquia
Trey Lankford , if you wouldn't mind , I would love to get a copy of this STELLAR LP . I could be found on FB under Christopher A Cordero . Hope to hear back . Chris
I couldn't find you ... try to find me
3:33 ❤
Esto suena por lejos mejor que el último álbum de los peppers.
❤️ thanks
Thanks a lot!
YOu made a grat job posting this album. Can you write to me all the song's name?
Andrea Tolomelli updated
Trey Lankford thx
Do you by chance have 3 out of 5 Live or squeeze?I only somehow kept the 3 out of 5 live LP cover but no LP
That is the killer live album right? I had it but haven’t found it here yet.
He's a fan of Prince. Does anyone else hear any other obvious influences?
I hear the “Police” in their sound at times. First time listening on my record player. Had no clue I had this in my collection
HILLELL👽
You are the only one looking for a CD but according to Alain 1 has never been released
Thanks for posting...Alain's vocals are great and inventive production from TR.
Is this the album that has Hillel on it?
