Gel Blaster Tips: A General Guide to Shimming

- Hey guys! In this video I'm going to share with you how I usually go about shimming a gearbox, this video is over 48 minutes, so I'm going to give you the time stamps for all the steps I talk about below, but my advice is not to skip too much, you might miss out on the plot!

As I mention in the video, this is NOT the guide to rule them all. I am sharing the method that I have developed over many trial and error, broken gearboxes and lots of advice and learning from other masters as well. So with that said, I do encourage everyone to checkout other videos and see what you can learn from them as well. I just hope that this can be a first step in the right direction for many modders hoping to start getting busy with their gearboxes.

I always use the Low Profile SHS Steel Bushing. But yeah you made a great video and helping the Blaster Community who want to upgrade by themself. What a good tutorial @galaposJ
Can you do a video explaining your views of using the delay chip with gel blaster applications. I’m only aware of them being useful in airsoft boxes. 👍

Wondering; You can put a 9:1 dsg in a gel blaster apparently but interested to know why you don’t think it can be used for gel blasters?
Because gel blaster magazines cannot keep up with the ROF with the feed, not even the high speed mags, the current limit for the mags I think it’s only around 36, maybe max 40 rps, at 14.8v.
Absolutely - you can certainly put one in but you’re right, the feed issues are annoying. Finally got a 9:1 going with resolved feed issue but I doubt it’s over 40rps. I don’t know without a chrono ... hey that rhymes! 🤣
As always mate great video... Just wondering what bevel gear you were using in this video? coz it looked like it had helical cut gear teeth on top

Ive only got WD-40 and a silicon based lubricant that's pretty viscous. Would you recommend me using these over grease?
I haven't tried those myself, I can't comment. But I supposed wd-40 can be quite good between the shims
whats the difference in terminology of springs? i see springs like m100 then theres others like 1.2, 1.3, 1.4
They are both ways to identify the of the power spring but the M system is more direct because the number actually indicates the possible muzzle velocity that it can achieve where as the 1.x Is a number indicating the spring’s wire diameter, which can sort of correlate to a certain muzzle velocity. However, springs have different lengths, material, density of the rings so the 1.x isn’t an accurate indication of the spring’s performance at all. It was used by the community for a long time before the m system was adopted from airsoft so it sort of stuck with a lot of people. It is a good way to gauge a springs power if you do not know what M rating it is though. And this is also how I sort my springs to remind myself roughly what each one is what.
What sort of glue would you suggest supper glue heat glue Also your using bearings i think i been just been using bushes as under larger spring i blew bearings but than i have much to learn , if i get over your way in the next few years I'd be honored to come game have a game with your team thanks again for sharing your knowledge
I use 3M scotch weld
My recommendation is NSK bearings for the bushing

Once you get the hang of it you can do it in 10-20 min

Great video man. I do have a question however. I'm planning on shimming the gearbox for the XYL ARP9 when it arrives. I'm not sure about the shim job from the factory, and I want to learn how to shim anyway. That gearbox appears to have a soldered connection through the top of the gearbox case for the pre-loader. How would you work on shimming that gearbox? Cut the cables and solder them back together later?
You don't need to cut it, you can undo it easily and remove the switch.

@@galapagosj3021 Sorry don't mean to bother you but something happened last night while I was shimming that I found very interesting. After what I thought was a perfect shim job on a gearbox, I put the gearbox back in the receiver, without a cylinder in it to see if the receiver influenced the shimming. I figured, hey the gearbox shell is nylon, it flexes... The receiver might push against the body. Sure enough, my shimming was too tight when I put the gearbox in the receiver! Perfect without the receiver, but once inside, I had to re-shim the spur and sector gear to compensate for the pressure from the receiver. I just thought you might find that interesting. I've mostly worked on AS gearboxes and they don't really flex. Have you experienced this too with nylon gearbox shells?
That happens but not necessarily due to the gearbox, it can also be the fact that the gear set you used isn't particularly compatible with that gears box, the type of bushing / bearing used can also make a difference. But yes, I have experienced it before. I either swap out for lower profile bushings or re-shim, but that doesn't happen to me anymore. Just go easy on the shim when you start the process, and remember to close the gearbox properly (including the screws) every step of the way so you see how much you are actually putting in.
