Anno 2070, I liked the variety of "factions" you could play. It wasn't perfect but the variety of structures kept me in. Skylines is probably the new favorite.

Banished is my fav city builder. Have played most of those suggested by others but I keep going back to Banished. Has lots of the qualities you talk about in Ancient Cities, gorgeous graphics and great in-depth game play.

For the release only Neolithic to Bronze Age will be there. Other ages or cultures will be added as separate expansions. We decided to do it this way so we can focus on each age and make them as detailed as we want, each one working like a whole new game on its own, with their particular gameplay, etc... Of course this needs to be done step by step.
I'd rather have it stay ancient, just personally. This is a very unique time period to make a game about, and I'd love to keep the whole "man still kind of equal with nature" aesthetic rather than steamroll nature in the first 10% of the game. IOW, I'd rather they focus on doing one unique age well then making this another Age of Rise of Empire Earth. :)

Banished would be my favourite for this kind of city builder. As for first person, wurm styled would be Life is Feudal, everything in that is so hard to get you feel accomplished doing the smallest things.
my favorite city builder has always been anno 1602. mainly because it is the first I ever played as a kid but also I adore the artstyle. I like the naval combat aspect with pirats or the computers too.

Banished was a great city city builder. It was mainly based around economy but it executed it pretty well. There were a few mechanics/aspects that were missing that would've made it prefect.
Children of the Nile was my favorite city builder and thus looks to take the best parts from that. Backed it, [even though it seems they already reached their goal] and hoping for full release.
WoS, my answer on your 1st question - Sierra games (Caesar 3, Pharaoh and Emperor), Anno and SimCity. It is commendable that there are some people with a good perspective what a city builder should be like. But from your commentary it seems the studio is overthinking it. Yes, it is extremely valuable to have big dreams, but for a game of this concept it may be best to give it in portions.

To answer your question, my all-time favorite is Anno 1404 with Tropico 3 close behind. However, my personal guilty pleasure is building my citadel endlessly in classic Stronghold Crusader.
This looks amazing! I mean if they finish this properly with super detailed mechanics and TONS of control over every aspect, the this is gonna be EPIC! I really hope they add other, historically accurate cultures/civilizations and that you get more warfare/politics/strategy in the later stages of the gameplay. Like this hunter gatherer stage already looks awesome. If they make that super detailed and add extra stuff - wow this has huge potential.
Ive been a big fan of AOE and stronghold crusader. This game seems awesome because of the complex features and ofcourse beautiful graphics, cant wait to give it a go
I'm looking forward to this release big time! I love to create my own layouts for bases (or cities n such) in games and have never really found one that fits my needs. Fortnite could be an example of a game in the right direction, but I won't know until I start playing on the 21st! Again, super excited for this release and I'll definitely be keeping tabs on it!!!
For me, Banished is the most demanding, yet most merciless one. If it comes to fun and detailing, Cities. Anno sometimes, but that is more of an economic simulation, if any. Therefor, right now I am not able to define the "BEST" city builder ever. This one, though, is looking absolutely amazing
*Out Of Topic* Looking how realistic this game looks as a civilization simulator, I sincerely think that the possibilty that the universe is a simulation by a truly advanced civilization. Tin hats aside, the progress humanity has made with its games have been one of the fastest growing aspects of technology. About 20 years ago, I was playing with black-and-white games that have been hell to play in the dark, but now, we can achieve in-game physics to an optical illusion level. It's mind blowing. _With that said I am a true pirate and will never ever have enough resources to expend in any sort of game or whatsoever._
Personally my favorite strategic, city building survival game is Rimworld. It demonstrates a good portion of the features shown in this video, but with its own little interesting approaches on various concepts like moods and colonization. However, I still look forward to seeing this game coming out on Steam hopefully sometime within the year.
I have completely missed this game. It is exactly the kind of game play I want in a "build" kind of game, I hope that one can for an example align structures to true north and other stuff like that, just because ha ha. I agree that this looks awesome! About the city builders, I'd say Black and white sparked something, and Empire Earth had for it's non city builder gamestyle a lot of aspects that one should have. Then came banished a decade or more later, which looked good, but had so many limitations and feudal life village is just a banished clone. The creature management and the non block layout seems to be the most intriguing things for me. every banished game is a grid management challange and every corner something that things will get caught on.
