Skylines deserves to be number 1 purely for the mod support and unlimited freedom it gives you literally everyone can enjoy skylines no matter what with the right mods enabled
nope, CS doesnt have depth to it. I can easily break the game without even trying. it's not a challenge on any level. More like a city painter altogether then an actual city builder
33.1 i'm not into games that are difficult. i play games that are enjoyable. this isn't the top 10 most difficult city builders. it's the top 10 best. and cities is the best.
Imo it should have been Simcity 4 in #2 and Cities Skylines #1. Simcity 4 was absolutely incredible and Cities Skylines improved on everything in Simcity 4.
+RV Productions To say that cities skylines "improved on everything in Simcity 4" is kind of ludicrous. It certainly does not do that. I wouldn't even say they were that comparable as they have their focuses firmly in different ares of city building. Both are good games, but they're different games.
I still play Caesar III at times while couldn't get warm with Skylines. Managing a city is way more interesting to me than to waste hours layouting it ..... Also, there's no better game music than Caesar III's. edit: Alright, I wrote this before watching the vid to the end. I expected Sim City 4 to be #1, had no doubts. Now I agree with you, no way in hell that Sim City 2000 would still be the "most interesting" today.
Qilue SimCity 2000 is a fantastic game. I bought it a launch and is still one of my favourite games. However, Cities: Skylines showed how you properly do a current gen city builder as well as innovating and improving upon the genre.
Sim City 4 Deluxe. Sim City 4 took everything that was good with its predecessors and perfected it; along with the Rush Hour expansion AND the unbelievably extensive modding community, Sim City 4 Deluxe pretty much nukes all competition.
SimCity 2000 was a great game. WAS. Expectations of games change over time and I'm pretty sure anyone who says SimCity 2000 is better than any of the modern city builders, especially Cities Skylines, is either lying or deluded. Compared to games of the times, SC2K is limited in content, limited in city building size, inferior in modded content, aesthetically ancient, and unintuitive.
Kwichris K Me neither. I've played all the Sim Cities from 1 to 4 (relentlessly I might add) and SC4 is the best. I think the only reason Sim City 1 came first is because it's the game most people remember or because they have some sort of attachment to it for history's sake. But regardless, Sim City 4 is easily the best in the series. I could go on and on about why but yeah.
I probably play them way more then I should too! But, I guess that historical connection is what people remember. SC4 is definitely the best though...(Definitely not Societies though lol)
SC2K was definitely the groundbreaker in terms of City Builders, but I honestly enjoyed SC3K more, and SC4 the most. SimCity 4 carried the entire genre for over a decade, and help bolster games like Anno and Tropico to be recognized in the mainstream. It also very clearly defined what we expected from a modern city simulator, and every CitySim that has tried to come after had to be modeled off of that. To this day, it has a robust modding community, ready and willing to make the changes necessary to open the game up to its full potential (NAM is so ubiquitous it might as well be an expansion pack). It wasn't until Cities: Skylines was released 12 years after SC4 that the torch was finally passed. In that time, SimCity Societies, Cities XL, and even follow SimCity 2014 failed to capture the magic that SimCity 4 provided. There's no doubt that SC4 belongs on the list.
I remember trading Outpost for SC 2000 in 94 at the tender age of 10. SC 2000 blew my mind, one of the most difficult balancing acts to do on a PC. SC4 though deserves a mention.
IDK I was always more of Pharaoh guy myself, and the one about Chinese dynasties was cool too. I am a bit sad they didn't include grand cities Rome or shoved the new anno in place of the older better ones, imho.
I wanted to argue why Cities Skylines is not first and why SimCity2000 is first and why 2k instead SC4, but having thought a bit about it I agree. I can't even estimate the amount of days I poured into SC2k. Skylines is a great game and a worthy successor but SC2k is where it all really begun (aside from relatively simple SimCity obviously). PS: Anno 1404 is still the best Anno game in my books.
Not on the list 'cus SimCity 2000 is better. If you want the best, modern city building game, you should really consider buying Cities: Skylines. SimCity 4 is a really crappy game in comparison.
I actually have both, I love Cities: Skylines, but Simcity 4 it's still a great game and I continue playing it because it still offers a lot, the community it's still really active as well. I think it deserves more recognizement since it was pretty much the only true city building game from 2003 until last year when Cities: Skylines came out.
SimCity 4 is the reason why the SimCity franchise is still alive. It held and stayed strong until its spiritual successor C:S. Even then, plenty still play it with the number of City Journals popping up in Simtropolis. Honestly, it deserves spot.
Depends on what u like. Anno 2205 is made much simpler than anno 2070 and anno 1404 so basically it just how u want to play and what time of history u like.
Cities in Motion is a good game, but is NOT a City Builder. I mean, even Black & White 2 is more a City Builder than Cities in Motion, and it's not a City Builder. Anno 2205 is a joke. Only played Anno 2070 and Anno 2205, still 2070 is way better (and I know I should play 1404 and 1701). Zeus instead of Pharaoh ? OK, I won't argue. Matter of personal taste mabe. Where is SimCity 4 ?
Cities XL? No. Way. That game was unfortunately absolutely dreadful. Cities in Motion 2 shouldn't even be on this list since it isn't even a "City Builder" - it's first and foremost a transport simulation game. The city-building aspect is just a tacked-on random seed generator along roads; you don't place any of the buildings yourself, there's just a function to generate them along spline actors (roads). It doesn't even generate them intelligently, either (i.e. let's pop up a skyscraper right next to a suburban townhouse).
If Banished was ranked when playing with mods like the Colonial Charter ones it would've been so much higher on the list - that mod has like 10x more content than the base game and makes things so much more interesting, so you can actually stick to the game, rather than getting bored by it once you've finally managed to survive a long time :D
Thanks SimCity 2000.. Tyvm for the inspiration, u made the next generation building game beautiful :3 i remember when i was playing sc2000 10 years ago* *old is gold* :D

Am I the only one who never really had problems with rebels in Tropico? I was always able to balance things pretty well, keep people happy, and make plenty of money. I managed to be a pretty benevolent dictator :3
Can somebody please explain to me why no one in this genre respects the originals, especially simcity 2000, i mean in other genres like fps or strategy games like doom, command and conquer red alert and civilization, who paved the way for their respective genre, all have a place in gamers hearts but here everyone wants to replace simcity with cities skylines and even kick the second game(simcity 2000 which was the first isometric game since simcity 1 was top down) out of the list and put 4 in its place?!? I mean WTF!!!
@@storytime2193 i am not saying that it should be ranked high cause of its age, i am just saying that it should be ranked high because it revolutionised the genre and helped in its progression

totally agree. Sim City 2000 was the best. I was totally addicted. I never forget, back in the days, i filled the whole map in one day! And the day after i filled it with arcologies...!😂😉
+Ace Ace Why? It isn’t even a city building game. More like an flawed, unchallenging road game, that lacks a lot of features and where you paint houses on. At least you actually build a city in Simcity 2000
That's why mods exist. use it. Traffic Manager mod is the best when it came to traffic in the game. I rarely had traffic problems since I used that mod. And I don't think Simcity could to this i.redd.it/myotb2xjjo801.jpg. Also use Plop The Growables mod if you don't want to zone.
the original sim city was my favourite because when a tall residential block linked into a double with an adjacent tall residential block, all my childhood dreams came true at once.
Cities Skylines is the god of all city builder games, the options are unlimited thanks to the modder community being so massive, you can build and achieve things you could never dream of on Simcity, I remember being a big Simcity fan and trying Skylines for the first time, i've never played Simcity since
Im Betmen ***** I think you are both right and not right. The game sucks, that's true. But imagine Cities Skylines was never made. Than SimCity (2013) would be the most played city builder of today.
SimCity 3000 has always been my favorite version, even tho SimCity 2000 was the first version I played. The original SimCity 4000 had an annoying tendency for planes to crash into the towers, but was better. SimCity 4, for some reason, lost the magic for me. Still, faults and all, I kept coming back to 3000 Unlimited. That is what I use to play saved games from decades ago.
No surprise with 1 & 2 there. Sunk a lot of hours in SC2000. God, think I still have the disc somewhere. And Cities: Skylines... man. yeah, I've spent a lot of time playing that one & can't wait to see where they take it next.
Pharaoh is the greatest city building game of all time and probably always will be and you do not even have it on your list. Zeus was based of it's engine and concept yet Zeus is not as great. Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom was also one you did not mention
i am addicted to township on mobile Facebook. i have been playing that combination cityville and farmville game for 237 days in a row. man am i hooked on that city builder app
I found Anno 1404 was much better than 2205. In addition, I don't think Cities in Motion really fits into this list seeing that you aren't really managing the city, just the transit. A bit surprised SimCity 4 didn't make it into the list.
The most fun thing of SimCity 2000 is that it's FREE now on Origin :D So you can play it all the time...It's an amazing game. Though since I met Cities Skylines, it doesn't deserve the first place anymore xD
I usually spent way more time managing my buildings and resource collection in that game than actually building or using an army XD, though to be fair, I usually played in a team, so my team-mates did all the fighting while i paid for it.
How in the fucking hell can SimCity 2000 be number 1? SimCity is the most suck fest fucking game series ever. Cities Skylines should of been number one on this list. Again this shows that WatchMojo needs to have a better system in doing these lists.
I guess Mojo would have to distinguish between games then and now. Because of course later games would be more ready to build off their predecessors. Cities Skylines would only be #1 in the past couple years. They were going by critical acclaim rather than what is now better. But Sim City 2000 was a phenomenon when it came out while Cities was just another great competing Sim game.
This is a good list but I would have put City Skylines as number 1. Sim City 2000 and Sim City 4 were amazing in their day but City Skylines is those games plus advanced features and graphics. It's literally the spiritual successor of the Sim City series.
No one will remember the game because it was taken off Facebook but Simcity Social was SUPER addicting and I really miss playing that game. That's the kind of Builder game I want, though. Not too many worries about stuff, especially what goes where, just creating a city. Cities: Skylines is a good game but WAY too complex for me.
Minecraft has swept the floor with all these builders in the last few years. 30 million blocks in every direction from the spawn point. The Game is massive. I think Sim City CoT is more fun than CS, but MC has buried them all.
Ive played all the Sim City games and after I bought and played Cities Skylines, I become addicted to it and promised never to buy any other city building games. Cities Skylines should be in no.1!
I think SimCity 4: Rush Hour is the best. Still played it until now though a lot of more games with sophisticated graphic. Really recommended for Urban Planner or student related to it. I've learned a lot from it.
If you're going with quality, Cities Skylines. Historical impact, the original SimCity should be the pick since it not only invented the genre, but invented sandbox gaming.
Skylines deserves to be number 1 purely for the mod support and unlimited freedom it gives you
literally everyone can enjoy skylines no matter what with the right mods enabled
Yeah #1 and #2 need to swap places
nope, CS doesnt have depth to it. I can easily break the game without even trying. it's not a challenge on any level. More like a city painter altogether then an actual city builder
33.1 if you want it to be a challenge just put it on hard mode and turn off the other mods
Lol please. If you call this challenge I am not surprised you like CS so much.
33.1 i'm not into games that are difficult. i play games that are enjoyable. this isn't the top 10 most difficult city builders. it's the top 10 best. and cities is the best.
Favorite thing to do in SimCity:
Making a regular modern city, and watching everything burn.
Imo it should have been Simcity 4 in #2 and Cities Skylines #1. Simcity 4 was absolutely incredible and Cities Skylines improved on everything in Simcity 4.
simcity 4 was my shit back in the day. so many good memories
where else the mayor can drive a freaking tank and shoot at everything ?!!
simcity 4 will always be the best imo it was amazing for its time and still has a community all these years later
RV Productions TBH, I can hardly compare between Cities: Skylines and Simcity 4. Both games were masterpiece...
+RV Productions To say that cities skylines "improved on everything in Simcity 4" is kind of ludicrous. It certainly does not do that. I wouldn't even say they were that comparable as they have their focuses firmly in different ares of city building. Both are good games, but they're different games.
Zeus, Cities XL 2012, Banished, Tropico 3 and 4 and Sim City 3000 almost got years of my life! Awesome games never get old!
SimCity 3000 is still so much fun
Bullshit, no way can a decades old game be better than Cities Skylines. Check your nostalgia at the door.
Totally agree.
Clearly you are too young to have played SimCity 2000.
Both are fantastic but I agree. Cities: Skyline is almost too good of a city builder. Not to mention the mods and expansions.

Hemang Chauhan I'm just saying that I still enjoy the game before it got to the point its at now ^-^
xkaaatx Oh okay :)
I prefer SimCity 4. Looks far better, more realistic, and far more customisable.
I love Zeus and Poseidon! I still bust them out every once in a while.
Agreed, more than 10 city builder game i have played after all these years, SimCity 2000 is still my favorite of all time.
Kinda disappointed that Pharaoh isn't listed anywhere. That was a very solid Citybuilding game with some unique mechanics in it.
Anyone familiar with the genre would say Cities Skylines #1, Sim City 4 #2.
City Skylines is really good, but I prefer Sim City 4. I have no clue why they used the original Sim City as opposed to Sim City 4.
Kwichris K Me neither. I've played all the Sim Cities from 1 to 4 (relentlessly I might add) and SC4 is the best. We all know CS should be number 1 but I understand the respect given to Sim City for paving the way for this genre.
Caesar III >>> Caesar IV
Simcity3000>>>> Simcity 2000
tell that to my 3D rendered tax collectors
OMG I played the Caesar 3 demo like 50 times I loved it!
Caesar 3 forever
Ayyyyy
Yeah, I'm just glad Watch Mojo put some of Sierra's City Building Games on here. I played the crud out of Pharaoh & Caesar II's Demo. :)
ikr? adding Zeus to the list and not Caesar3 is a crime.
bvbxiong To be fair, Zeus is the pinnacle of Impression Games' management games when it comes to gameplay.
But C3 is full of charm.
***** They've already included another Impression Games' game. And I think other choices here are equally worthy.
I remember trading Outpost for SC 2000 in 94 at the tender age of 10. SC 2000 blew my mind, one of the most difficult balancing acts to do on a PC. SC4 though deserves a mention.
I gotta love Anno 2205. I have played that game more than all the civilization and other city builders combined.
Compared to other games, IMO, Zeus should be higher. Not just for novelty and charm, because gameplay is still solid.
IDK I was always more of Pharaoh guy myself, and the one about Chinese dynasties was cool too. I am a bit sad they didn't include grand cities Rome or shoved the new anno in place of the older better ones, imho.
Seeing Zeus only on #10 was a huge disappointment. Like you said, the game still holds up very well nowadays.
Also, Caesar 3, though I haven't played Caesar 4
Zeus is just Caesar III. They could've scrapped Caesar 4 and Zeus and just used Caesar III.
Seeing it reminded me a lot of Pharoah and Cleopatra. Similar thing set in ancient Egypt.
I am glad to see a fellow Anno 1440 lover. It felts so matured and polished compared to its sequels. shame they renamed it to Dawn of Discovery...
Not where I live they didn't :) Just added Venice and put out as Anno 1404 Gold.
Anno 1701 was really good too and it was portable

No surprise with 1 & 2 there. Sunk a lot of hours in SC2000. God, think I still have the disc somewhere. And Cities: Skylines... man. yeah, I've spent a lot of time playing that one & can't wait to see where they take it next.
Gee
I wonder wich game is number 1
This was a good pick me up after that 'reasons why being an adult suck' list.
Just having CitiesXL on this list invalidates your whole video - vaporware
Pharaoh is the greatest city building game of all time and probably always will be and you do not even have it on your list. Zeus was based of it's engine and concept yet Zeus is not as great. Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom was also one you did not mention
number 4 should be arsenal.......
The road creation noise from Sim City 2000 still haunts my dreams.
Oh come on no Stronghold Crusaders
i am addicted to township on mobile Facebook. i have been playing that combination cityville and farmville game for 237 days in a row. man am i hooked on that city builder app
wht no SIMCITY best city game I've played.
look at number 1
SimCity is a shit! Cities Skylines it´s the real city simulator ;)
There was one! Number #1
if the first city builder(simcity) wasnt one C:S wouldn't be
duhrealone is me simcity 2013 was crap cities skylines is 80% better
SimCity 3000 is the best, an improvement on 2000, with more features, but still has what made SimCity great
Black and white 2
I found Anno 1404 was much better than 2205. In addition, I don't think Cities in Motion really fits into this list seeing that you aren't really managing the city, just the transit. A bit surprised SimCity 4 didn't make it into the list.
You forget Clash Royale with the Xbow meta 😂
WrathRaf that's an action, stragety game
The most fun thing of SimCity 2000 is that it's FREE now on Origin :D So you can play it all the time...It's an amazing game. Though since I met Cities Skylines, it doesn't deserve the first place anymore xD
whaaat? no Age of Empire series 😡😡😡?!?
I usually spent way more time managing my buildings and resource collection in that game than actually building or using an army XD, though to be fair, I usually played in a team, so my team-mates did all the fighting while i paid for it.
it's not really a city building game
that's a strategy/action game. not a city builder.. -_-
123haninhk iiy
i was thinking the same thing
Sim City 4 should have made this list. The graphics, design, and just about everything in the game is so much more amazing than Sim City 2000.
How in the fucking hell can SimCity 2000 be number 1? SimCity is the most suck fest fucking game series ever. Cities Skylines should of been number one on this list. Again this shows that WatchMojo needs to have a better system in doing these lists.
well without simcity you wouldn't have cities skyline
Or any of these games honestly.
Sim City 2000 changed everything. There was nothing out there like it at the time.
Im Betmen Being the first game out does not nessessarily mean being number 1.
The Simpsons Tapped Out is one I've recently got addicted to
I love Tropico, I find it to be a funny city building type game.
This is a good list but I would have put City Skylines as number 1. Sim City 2000 and Sim City 4 were amazing in their day but City Skylines is those games plus advanced features and graphics. It's literally the spiritual successor of the Sim City series.
Oh damn, I've played almost all these games. I really need to get out more.
I personally find Simcity 3000 the best of the series.
i'm glad Banished is in this, not everyone know this game
I was surprised to not see Chris Sawyers Locomotion on here odd am I the only one who remembers that game?
Banished is so damn frustrating yet I love it
Pharaoh is so much better than Poseidon or Zeus...deserved a place high on the list
I guessed it correctly! Cities: Skylines is the best modern city simulator.
Slave of Allah
Yup it is better that SimCity 2013
No one will remember the game because it was taken off Facebook but Simcity Social was SUPER addicting and I really miss playing that game.
That's the kind of Builder game I want, though. Not too many worries about stuff, especially what goes where, just creating a city.
Cities: Skylines is a good game but WAY too complex for me.
I miss that game too. Best alternative to CityVille.
The fact that Cities XL is on this list is evidence this list is absolutely horrifying.
The Simpsons tapped out is a literal city builder smartass
CivCity: Rome doesn't get the love it deserves on these lists.
Amazing daily videos! Dropped a like a gave a sub, keep up the good work!
Minecraft has swept the floor with all these builders in the last few years. 30 million blocks in every direction from the spawn point. The Game is massive. I think Sim City CoT is more fun than CS, but MC has buried them all.
Literally nobody wants to play Minecraft.
Simcity 2000 was good but simcity 4 was Absolutely Fantastic!
Cities Skylines and Simcity Buildit is probably the best ones
If you're going with quality, Cities Skylines. Historical impact, the original SimCity should be the pick since it not only invented the genre, but invented sandbox gaming.
Banished in city skylines is one of my favorite games😍
Regular Simcity for NES is where it all started!!!
