Mike, that was a lot of good information and, this episode couldn't have come at a better time, I'm about to start putting the interior into my wagon. I just placed an order using the link.
Wow that’s looking awesome! I’m starting to get jealous of that cab. You are a few month ahead of my 57 build. It’s nice to get all this info and ideas ahead of time!
knock on the sheet metal on the opposite Side of the butyl to hear the difference. did this on my 65 mustang and it went from the empty tin can sound to like knocking on a tin can full of dense material. nice touch on adding the foam on top, will definitely use that nest time
@@MrBigal123123 Yep! I placed the same material on the headliner portion and knocked on the opposite side on the roof. Big difference. Thanks for watching, and for the comment!
Mike, I'd put that rubber stuff on the inside of the door skin, you know, inside the door, on the outside skin from the inside. Those doors can be noisy. You see this done in newer trucks
Speaking of that driver side, I'm really looking forward to videos for the pedals and Steering column. What length steering column to buy is the one thing I can't really figure out. I have always used Dynomat for sound deadening. Thick rubber and kinda has a foil on the outside. Super expensive though. I'll probabaly use the stuff you used instead.
@@N8z14 great question - Ive been trying to figure that out myself. I really want a short column because Id rather be able to adjust the seat forward, rather than get a column too long and feel cramped. I was leaning towards 28” or 30”. I have to measure the space, and also the engine bay side, because I could always go with a 30” column to play it safe, and simply “push it through” the firewall further (assuming I have the space - hence the measuring). Yeah, the butyl stuff is mostly all the same, I used the expensive stuff on my Trans Am and cheap stuff now and I cant tell any difference honestly.
@@g00ber24 I put some of the butyl mat where the headliner goes (thats another reason I opted for the thinner 50 mil butyl). Im not sure if I will have room for the foil backed foam yet… I think I might be able to make it work if my headliner idea works out. I will say that the 50 mil butyl mat by itself for sure is no problem and wont interfere with the headliner
May I say, you do not need that much butyl tape, you only need a few small strips. Do your own test, put a small section down...2 " wide across the width of the van achieves the same (imagine a drum, put a finger in the middle, hit the drum and you get a dull thud) ...less cost & weight. It just stops the the harmonics...then lay the foam insulator over the whole area to make the sound waves change direction...that is how it works.

Yep I’m kinda inching towards the finish line.

Thanks for the info!! I’m working on a similar project so it’s been very helpful!

Looks good. The foam should help with retaining a/c too, (assuming/hoping you’re installing a/c)

Can you put that stuff on the roof or will it be to big to fit a headliner
