- An unfaithful wife and her lover scheme to kill her husband, but things are turned upside down when the lover is unintentionally killed instead! Then, in the best noir tradition, the husband goes into hiding and lets his wife take the rap! With a stellar cast that includes Brian Donlevy, Ella Raines, and Anna Mae Wong, this little noir gem from director Arthur Lubin (The Spider Woman Strikes Back) takes us into the lives of people who are only one kiss away from murder!
Director: Arthur Lubin
Writers: Dorothy Davenport, Jay Dratler

This is when actors could act & movies had meaning & were watchable. Today's movies just aren't the same & have lost their spark.
Well, there was a lot of trash those times too, but something brilliant you can find there more often than now, yeah..
Love the older movies. There is actually a plot. Not just swearing and sex.
This is a terrific film, enduring values, very good performances. Thank you!!!!!
Lest anyone ever dismiss Brian Donlevy as "just another B actor" - watch the moment where it dawns on him what his devoted wife has been up to. And how he has been deceived...his reaction is utterly heartbreaking. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it. One of my faves..
He wasn't just another B actor, had roles in numerous A's and was even nominated for an Oscar.
Great storyline with solid and sensitive performances from Brian Donlevy, Ella Raines, and of course the wonderful and charming Charles Coburn. Helen Walker does an excellent job playing the scheming and corrupt Mrs Williams. This film has rightly become a gripping crime classic.
Great film! Until it was posted here I thought I’d never have a chance to see it again. It’s as wonderful as I remembered!
Why this and many others of the same genre are disparagingly called "B" movies is a mystery.
This film and so many like it are
filled with great story lines, fine performances delivered by great leads and character actors and are
really not given their due. Given their enduring popularity I think there must be a lot of fans of these great films.
Totally agree
Basically, I think they're called that because of when they were released, they usually were the second feature and were produced on a relatively modest or low budget.
Moreover, I think many of them are actually more interesting and entertaining than most of what comes out of Hollywood today, and w/o all the computer effects and gore and curse words.
Thank you, what an enjoyable movie, good to see him in something other than a bad guy role, Ella is very good also
My favorite film nor. Thanks for this.
Great movie......love the vintage cars....bring back the 50's the best years ever....before the politicians want to dictate to everyone and run everyone's lives
How many love stories in this movie? There are three without even a romantic kiss, let alone bedroom scenes. The romance was clear and touching and communicated to the audiences without resorting to nudity and adult content. That stuff is added to current movies is because they want to not they have to
Great movie!!
Great movie! Watched it many times!
The San Francisco apartment building shown as the police detective drives up to tell Mrs. Williams her husband is dead, is the same swank building used in Hitchcock’s “Vertigo”; where the mentally ill, rich Kim Novak character lived! I believe it was actually a lovely San Francisco hotel baby in the day .......doncha just LOVE the oldies?!? 🕊💕✝️✡️♥️🙏🙋♀️🌹👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Yes, the name of the apartment building is "The Brocklebank".
Located in my favorite section of San Francisco -- Nob Hill. The Fairmont, Mark Hopkins, Huntington and Stanford Court hotels, Pacific Union Club, Huntington Park and Grace Cathedral. All on one block bounded by California, Taylor, Sacramento and Mason streets.
Cable cars run on California and on Powell, a block down from the top of the hill.
Brilliant acting by Brian Donlevy & what a performance by Ella Raines ⚡️She is so wicked 🍄& very pretty through it all, such an imagination 🌘 Wonderful talent displayed by Charles Coburn, as always 🌞 Thank you so much for sharing with us 🌷🎋
Ella Raines owns the gas station. Hellen Walker is the evil wife. Don't worry. No one is being graded. Just thought you might like to know.
Helen Walker was a very good actress. Too bad her personal life was troubled.
I would have married Ella Raines in a second.
Nice, clean print of this movie. I came here because the legendary L.A. podiatrist Dr. Samuel Hoffman plays theremin on the soundtrack. No badger was killed in the making of this film.
thanks for posting this - i love this old film - love seeing anna may wong, philip ahn
good movie
Now that was a good one!
Haven’t they ever heard of ATTEMPTED MURDER??
Obviously she should’ve been arraigned for attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
With his testimony she’d be convicted in five minutes and do 20 years in jail.
Watch this one . You won't be disappointed.
Excellent pic. Thanks for showing
Ella's raines plays the female mechanic not the wife
February 16th, 2024. Good film noir. Still free for now. Noticed yt has many or most of these classic movies for rent because they realize today's films, for the most part, are a total waste of time. I wonder how long until these old b/w movies will no longer be available for free. 🎦
Very good movie!
Very limited role for Anna May Wong which is expected though she saves the guy at the end. A good old-fashioned crime movie with a happy ending. If this starred Edward G. robinson and was directed by Fritz Lang, this would've turned out very differently.
Good looking dish too! " little to high in seasoning to my digestion thanks"
CLASSIC!!!! 1:43:09
The wife is not Ella raines.
🎬🍿🎬🌟🌟🌟🌟🎬🍿🎬
