Harriet is one of the funniest characters on Little House, and is one of my favorites. You know if she's in the scene, it'll likely end up in chaos lol!
Catherine Harriet Olson was a remarkable actress very convincing and you kept your attention on what she was doing. But I'm glad she took care of her problem first and could conquer the alcohol. That's to be commended. I truly enjoyed the character and grew up watching the show Little House on the prairie.
Put me in the "Love to hate Harriet". Two things I want to say about her character are that she never seems to learn the lesson and she makes Nels all the more lovable.
I have noticed watching the show at the time. Nels would reel Harriet back into line when she started to become difficult, and who always won leaving Harriet speechless, which wouldn't be a easy thing to do. Caroline would stand her ground with especially with the eggs. Caroline would stand her ground on how much the eggs worth, Harriet would give in and pay Caroline's price, much to Harriet's annoyance.
I just finished watching every episode of Little House on the Prairie a few weeks ago. I loved it. My favorite character was probably Charles. My favorite side character was Mrs Oleson I’m now watching Highway to Heaven which I’m loving so far. I’ve also watched every episode of Cheers which I absolutely loved
My favorite moments were: When she attempted at using the indoor water closet that Nels had installed. She ended up getting drenched instead. The other one was were Laura and Albert taught Mrs. Oleson a lesson when eavesdropping on people's phone calls.
I was disappointed Katherine MacGregor wasn't in the final show, mostly because some of her best scenes were whenever Harriett interacted with the Ingalls family for farewell scenes. For example, in the episode where Harriett and Nels almost got divorced and Harriett was going to take the children to live back east, there was a particularly touching scene triggered by Harriett's acknowledgement of Caroline being kind to her. There was another similar scene between Harriett and Caroline when the Ingalls, Garvey and Oleson families were all leaving Walnut Grove because of financial struggles. They all ended up moving to the city of Winoka for a while.
I enjoyed Katherine's character, Harriet. When she was a central character, I knew it was going to be a great, fun episode. The show did get depressing towards the end.
Absolutely, we feel the same way! Thank you for sharing your sentiments and for watching our content. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
Katherine McGreggor was the perfect actress for Harriet Oleson. I don't think anyone else could have played that character any better. I had no idea that she was an alcoholic; I am pleased to know that she was able to overcome her addiction and live out her life in peace. I still catch the reruns of Little House on the Prairie and still get a kick out of seeing the character of Mrs Olsen.
*Katherine MacGregor (born Dorlee Deane McGregor; January 12, 1925 - November 13, 2018) was best known for her role as Harriet Oleson in Little House on the Prairie* - 1:11 pm Pacific Standard Time on Wednesday, 16 November 2022
I had no idea why Katherine was missing from the last episodes of Little House on the prairie but I absolutely love what she brought to the show I am currently binge watching Little House on the prairie I go to sleep watching it because I keep my TV on all night just so I can watch it when I wake up LOL that's one of my favorite shows ever rest in peace miss Katherine McGregor
When you were talking about Nelly Olson, you incorrectly put in the actress who replaced Nellie as an adopted daughter. That was not Alison Arngrim, that was another actress who was in the series little house a new beginning,
That's Nancy Olsen played by Allison Balson. After Nellie grew up and married away, Mrs. Olsen suffered the empty nester syndrome. When she found Nancy an orphan who reminded her so much of her Nellie, she adpoted her. Nancy was so much worse the antagonist as Nellie was, she made Nellie look like an angel. She wrestled with being an orphan, an adoptee, and also a child who is replacing another child. She calmed down a lot after she and her mother had their breakthrough, and became only as much of a pest as Nellie used to be, and maybe not even as bad as that.
I can see how Catherine McGregor made Mrs. Oleson her own. They wrote the part but she played her, became her and she did it brilliantly. No one else could have played Harriet Oleson.
I loved her character how could you not. I wished someone would make a television series about the Little House on the Prairie again, something new for new audiences.
Katherine McGregor ,who played Harriet Oleson on Little House On The Prarie ,was a great actress ,no one else could play her role as Harriet Oleson but her !
Katherine was never compensated fairly for her role, and also for being in such a successful series! Michael Landon was quite conceited and treated the women in the series poorly. Karen Grassle elaborated on how Michael treated herself as well as Katherine. While watching the "dailys" of the filming of the show, Michael Landon was known to make fun of the performances of his coworkers. And when it came to paying his coworkers, he did not give these people the time of day. Kevin Hagen (Doc Baker) was also not paid well and he felt it was a slap in the face! Katherine did not appear in the finale of the series DUE TO POOR PAY! She was truely missed in the end of that show. And Michael's decision to blow up the town just proved how much ego Michael Landon had!! Read Karen Grassle memoir. It will certainly OPEN YOUR EYES!
He blew up the town because they were renting that land and they had to return it to the condition it was received in. Also, he did not want people using it as a backdrop or for other films.
Every small town has a Harriet Olesen. I grew up in small town in Minnesota and knew several like her. Mrs Edna Olesen, Mrs Myrtle Solvie, Mrs Daisy Hansen
2:07 okay that’s not Nellie. Also Richard Bull (Mrs. Oleson) did tell Katherine that but it’s understood that even though she gave her input when the first met and he denied, it was friendly. They started off like that which helped their dynamic in the show. It just makes it seem like they had trouble with each other but it was anything but that.
When you show the picture of Harriet with a young blonde girl in the school house you said that was Nellie that was not Nellie that was Nancy who the Olsen's adopted.
Had she not retired it might have been cute and funny to have she and Allison Arngrim appear together again on a modern comedy as similarly spoiled mother and daughter like their old characters the way some series would do every so often! Haha!
She was just hysterical, even when she was mad . She was a true comedian, especially when she’d be trying to make Nels look bad. It always made me wonder how they could live together. But all the same , she made her character well .
Yes. And that one episode where.. when Nellie was cheating in school. When she was nothing short of whipping her. She said to Nellie you just wait till we get home as if they lived 20 miles away from their home. 😂😂😂😂😂
She lucked out. The final episode was terrible. I hated it. I love Michael Landon but he made the end all about him blowing up the town. Ridiculous. Mary was nowhere to be found neither was Nellie such a disappointment.
Harriet was the biggest, most complex, interesting character on the show. I loved every episode she was in, and I wish she would have had more scenes. Of course she was awful at times and very superficial and mean, but she could be very endearing as well. Thanks 🙏🏻 for the information.
When the narrator said "and her daughter Nellie", Harriet wasn't ushering Nellie into the school house, it was the later adopted daughter Nancy. Back then it was common to use the 'cousin Oliver trope' to bring in younger actors when the kids of the series grew up.
yes she was a great addition and her character was pretty good i always loved her i knew she did not play in the last few episodes i was upset about that but now i know why i still watch my set of the show every now and then that i have the set of thank you team good job 😊
She was a great actress. She always made me laugh. I was really surprised that she was not on the last episode of the little house. It just didn’t seem the same. I always love that show and times I still watch it. It was my favorite show when I was a little kid.
Great Actress. The episode where they got the telephone system and Harriet was the switchboard operator listening in on everyone's calls was my favorite episode! So funny!
Hmmm, Karen Grassle said she didn't show up because she and Michael butted heads over him refusing to pay his cast members any ungraded pay and she refused to be bothered. I never noticed she wasn't on the final episode. Landon appeared to not have been as nice as he was portrayed. Mrs. Oleson started out as a snob and bigot, but she became the shows' comedy relief.
Katherine wasn’t the only person not in the last episodes. Her daughter Nellie that was mean throughout the show wasn’t there and her son and daughter. When Nellie got married and had 2 children and her character became nice ,she apologized to Laura when she was a adult. Her adopted daughter was in the final episode. She became depressed when her daughter and her son in law moved his family to New York.
Where did you get this information from? Because I've heard on interviews from at least two cast members, one of them being Karen Grassel that she didn't do those last few movies and/or episodes because of an ongoing payment disagreement. So who's right?
I think Harriet Oleson's presence in "The Last Farewell" would have run the land developer right out of town and the show would have turned out quite differently!!🤣🤣🤣
I didn’t know about that character not being present on the ending of the show because I never watched it. I did watch the pilot movie of the new show that Landon created and starred in before he died.
I loved her she played the part well and I loved all the other actors and actresses as well it is my favorite show of all I always learn a lot from them I did not know about Katherine macgragregor about the last farwell
Legendary character and a great actress. I do think they messed the ending up. No Harriet, Mary, Nellie or Hester Sue.. They should have made a big reunion and leave blowing up the town on the cutting room floor.
It is a big shame this hasn't been repeated least couple times during the many years since last actually was. This was truly an example of when tv shows and their exemplary casts were almost as great as any full length movie, an era certainly won't happen again to that degree.
The Harriet Oleson character was certainly nothing like an "oaf," as your narration incorrectly states. On the contrary, she's easily one of the most intelligent people in Walnut Grove.
She looked a lot like the character she played. Idk if her real name was Harriet Olsen but they could've been relatives they looked soo similar. Got curious to see the real people of Walnut Grove so I googled it.
My favorite was when the farmers decided to plant corn instead of wheat and they gave money for seed. The man bought seed and had an accident on the way back. The farmers sat outside the Olsen store swearing and talking trash about the man and his pregnant wife. Harriet went outside and gave them a good tongue lashing. I thought that was great.
Didn’t Harriet get drunk when the dr gave her med for the vapors? She was a good actress one you have a love/hate relationship with, It was Laura that said “I got mad last night real mad so I busted some windows they are not getting those and they’ll have to do a a lot of cleaning up to do at our boardinghouse” & I believe the man who brought little house from Charles said he had a wagon full of Dyomite I forgot who said they are going to take our town the least we can do is bury it(I think it was Mr Edwards), Harriet was in the hospital, Mary was married Where was Carrie & Grace? I didn’t see Andy, Alice or Jonathan where were they
The real walnut grove in the little house books wasnt blown up and in those classic books ingalla didnt adopt albert Cassandra and james and mary never married and charles in galls in real life looked more like victor french and and micheal landon looked more like the real life mr. Edwards
she was clearly a choleric sanguine persona! an aggressive go getter with a high sense of humor and laughter! same as myself! so its no surprise that her self drive overflowed onto other situations and other people; some people dont mind it, others resent it. too bad she didnt read her Bible; John 3:3 states unless ye be born again, ye shall not see the Kingdom of God. John 14:6 states (Jesus speaking) : I am the way the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father (God) BUT BY ME. so good luck getting into paradise without Jesus. but i will certainly enjoy the reruns; i watch it almost daily. and Michael Landon and Victor French excessively drinking and smoking on the set, disappointing, but wantonly destroying your body then reaping the results is not surprising. Definitely was a great series!
I 😍 loved the show. I seldom had a chance to watch it. Michael Landon, was one of my favorite characters. 😍 I originally, loved Him on Bonanza. ( But who didn't) I was just a kid. When the original Bonanza, was on the TV. I'm a little older, then most people now. A great life. 👍 Has provided the opportunity. To witness, the development. Of most of modern television. Little House, was an excellent product. Great actors, were a good reason. Why, it was such a successful program.

Hi. Dearest
As a person who whated more than 3 seasons of the show in original version I think Harriet is the spice of the show. Regards
When Katherine McGregor died, I had finished reading the books a few weeks earlier
Harriet was not nice, but she was funny.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
When the narrator said "and her daughter Nellie", Harriet wasn't ushering Nellie into the school house, it was the later adopted daughter Nancy. Back then it was common to use the 'cousin Oliver trope' to bring in younger actors when the kids of the series grew up.
yes she was a great addition and her character was pretty good i always loved her i knew she did not play in the last few episodes i was upset about that but now i know why i still watch my set of the show every now and then that i have the set of thank you team good job 😊
Thanks for watching! We're glad to know that you love our video. If we may ask, which episode is the most memorable for you?
She was a great actress. She always made me laugh. I was really surprised that she was not on the last episode of the little house. It just didn’t seem the same. I always love that show and times I still watch it. It was my favorite show when I was a little kid.
So true! Thank you so much for your beautiful message for Harriet! Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
Great Actress. The episode where they got the telephone system and Harriet was the switchboard operator listening in on everyone's calls was my favorite episode! So funny!
Hmmm, Karen Grassle said she didn't show up because she and Michael butted heads over him refusing to pay his cast members any ungraded pay and she refused to be bothered. I never noticed she wasn't on the final episode. Landon appeared to not have been as nice as he was portrayed. Mrs. Oleson started out as a snob and bigot, but she became the shows' comedy relief.
The show would be nothing without Mrs. Oleson.
I haven't watched the last episode. Did they explain her absence in the show or was she just "not there"?
Good for her. A life well lived. Success 👏👏👏👏👏
Harriet was one of those characters that you love to hate. Kathrine Macgregor did a wonderful job portraying Mrs. Olsen.
Fun stuff, thanks for sharing! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
OMG! She act's just like one of my family member's
It is sad they were underpaid.
Where did you get this information from? Because I've heard on interviews from at least two cast members, one of them being Karen Grassel that she didn't do those last few movies and/or episodes because of an ongoing payment disagreement. So who's right?
Did I see Hoss Cartwright's hat in that group scene?
May she RIP ❤
I think Harriet Oleson's presence in "The Last Farewell" would have run the land developer right out of town and the show would have turned out quite differently!!🤣🤣🤣
I didn’t know about that character not being present on the ending of the show because I never watched it.
I did watch the pilot movie of the new show that Landon created and starred in before he died.
I loved her she played the part well and I loved all the other actors and actresses as well it is my favorite show of all I always learn a lot from them I did not know about Katherine macgragregor about the last farwell
I never noticed she was missing.

Harriet you're very lived live how you were such an antagonist...best of all youre loved prayers 4 you my dear..🙏💖🙏
Beautiful words, thank you for your message for Harriet. Which episode of the show is the most memorable for you?
I can’t believe she turned to the horrible evil religion of Hinduism… so sad! 💔
She was a real witch in that show.

Loved this series. Harriet made Nels life the life of Job!
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the series. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
The Harriet Oleson character was certainly nothing like an "oaf," as your narration incorrectly states. On the contrary, she's easily one of the most intelligent people in Walnut Grove.
Never. This. She was wounderful❤
She looked a lot like the character she played. Idk if her real name was Harriet Olsen but they could've been relatives they looked soo similar. Got curious to see the real people of Walnut Grove so I googled it.
God Rest Her Soul.❤🙏🏻😔
My favorite was when the farmers decided to plant corn instead of wheat and they gave money for seed. The man bought seed and had an accident on the way back. The farmers sat outside the Olsen store swearing and talking trash about the man and his pregnant wife. Harriet went outside and gave them a good tongue lashing. I thought that was great.
One of our favorites too, you've got taste! What other types of video would you like to see?
And so did Mary!! Good for her the men deserve a good tongue lashing His wife could have lost the baby
I didn’t see Andy, Alice or Jonathan where were they
My favorite episode was Here comes the brides😂😂😂😂
One of our favorites too, you've got taste! Who is your favorite cast member?
I remember that episode when Nellie almost eloped with a boy named Luke and the school teacher, Miss Beadle married Luke's father.
Superb character! ⭐

Plot twist: Mrs Oleson wasn’t in the final because she was on the Death Star with Nancy and fired the laser beams that destroyed the buildings.
Without Harriet and Nelly this show wouldn't be worth watching

Her character was the best thing about LHotP - hers and Victor French's.
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and enjoy the have a great evening!☺
“She was busy.” Enough said.

Everything was fine until Albert joined the cast and the show tanked. He was the cousin Oliver of Little house
It took you 7 minutes to explain a 30 second explanation
Omg no wonder she was mean she even got drunk on a episode when the doctor gave her something for something in her eye
She was getting her grove on
The real walnut grove in the little house books wasnt blown up and in those classic books ingalla didnt adopt albert Cassandra and james and mary never married and charles in galls in real life looked more like victor french and and micheal landon looked more like the real life mr. Edwards
I wish Katherine would have been there
So true! What other types of video would you like to see?
she was clearly a choleric sanguine persona! an aggressive go getter with a high sense of humor and laughter! same as myself! so its no surprise that her self drive overflowed onto other situations and other people; some people dont mind it, others resent it. too bad she didnt read her Bible; John 3:3 states unless ye be born again, ye shall not see the Kingdom of God.
Guess she didn't want to see the town get blown up!🤣🤣🤣
She was a drunk, I saved you 6 minutes in your life by not having to watch this video.
How was her character’s absence explained on the show?
You are very, very repetitive. This roughly 7 minute video could have 4 minutes tops. This makes me disinclined to watch other videos of yours.
I hate final episodes when all of the characters aren't present!
We're glad to know that you love the show. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. If we may ask, which episode did you like the best?
@@FactsVerse I can't say for sure. There were so many that I loved 😍. I need to be honest. I would put it on. And fall asleep 😴, while it was playing !!!!!
