Landon struck gold when he hired this magnificent actor. Katherine honed and portrayed the character of Harriette like no one else could. A masterful performance, and a bright jewel in the Little House crown.
Perfectly said. She could be a witch and be sympathetic. Sometimes you'd want to kick her in the rear end and other times you'd feel sorry for her. And there were times when she cracked me up! That's what made her so good. ☺

I wish someone could create a show like this again, but I doubt it! Michael Landon was taken too soon. I guess God needed him in heaven. He was like a second Dad to me!!! ❤❤❤
Cannot believe this woman never won an emmy. The most hilarious villain in the history of television. I used to watch this show just to see Harriet's outrageous antics - still do.
Katherine played her part so well, she became the character that people loved to hate but her humor was a ten out of ten. She never failed to make audience laugh. Those who knew her in real life characterized her as a very kind person.
That woman, Mrs. Harriet Oleson has me in STITCHES every time she makes an appearance on LHOTP. 😂😆🤣 I even dream of having a next🚪door neighbor like her to only be entertained by listening to her big mouth.
One of the best was when she talked to Nancy at The Orphanage about Nellie and what a "Mean Girl" she was. One of the best behind the scenes stories was when Mrs. Oleson found out that Nellie Cheated on The School's Final Tests and she actually whipped Alison Arngrim (Nellie) and that's why Alison ran into The House. She didn't know it was going to be real. Harriett could give Angela Channing a run for her Money. Remember when she was so nasty in The Pilot Episode and I realized she owned 51% and Nels owned 49%. It was financed by her Papa because Nels got her in the Family Way. She was smart, she never allowed anyone to buy and have a large amount of Credit, the Books were balanced to a T. She could have given Ike Godsey & Corabeth from The Waltons a run for their Money on how to manage a Store. Ike was so much nicer.

All of us who watched Little House, were so very lucky to be able to tune in every week to see Mrs. MacGregor, and all the other talented actors, in this last of it's kind series! There will never be another Katherine MacGregor, so we will just have to cherish the amazing work she left behind for all of us!
I can't imagine little house without Katherine McGregor/ Mrs Olsen. She was such a great actress. The part where she says "walnut grove" so loudly that the man falls off the telephone pole, you got to admit, that was so funny! But even through her snobby attitude, she still had a heart. So glad she was on the show, because she was a great talent. I always enjoy little house episodes. Without Harriet, it definitely wouldn't be the same.
She played a villain who was also a regular on the show. that is not easy at all! She had to walk a fine line between making us despise her, while still viewing her as a human being. She pulled it off beautifully. Fantastic actress!
Katherine MacGregor is one of the best. As a kid I remember thinking how evil yet funny Mrs. Olsen was. A role that could only be pulled off by a genius actor.
Great to see Matt here! I know he has done some voice over work but it's a darn shame that he disappeared from acting! As far as Katherine MacGregor goes she was a brilliant actress and deserved to win multiple Emmys for her portrayal of Harriet Oleson!

This is by far my favorite show. It’s so wholesome and nostalgic for me. I remember coming home from school everyday in my childhood home and looked forward to tuning into Little House on the Prairie. 💕
*Michael Landon was a genius who left the world a beautiful, astounding legacy. Period. Without him, there would be no Ms. Olsen to love to hate and no Little House...which is still so darn beloved and perfect today.* ❤
Makes me wanna cry when i see the intro of Highway to Heaven with also victor french also cos they both were my heroes when i was small, always did the right thing and tried to tell us to be good, so sad when michael landon is walking down the street and his best friend picks him up, like saying buddy, if we go, we go together, but i didnt know that they died until years later, RIP Michael and Victor.
@@notthesameman You didn't know they died until years later??? It was all over the news. Michael Landon was on Johnny Carson. It took him so quickly, Pancreatic cancer.
i've been watching this movie since i was about 20 or 25yrs old, now I'm 56 and i'm still watching again and again. Never been bored of. I love that family life of Michael Landon. Laura playing an important role since her childhood until the end.
For me she was the absolute star of the show. Her comic timing was magnificent and at times you loved to hate her. The realationship she had with the long suffering Nels was just fascinating. Perfect casting.....brilliant character. Hats off to you " Scottie !!! "
I am 44 & since we need to be indoors during these times I have had a chance to listen & watch many episodes. No wonder this show was on so long, it is so well done. Katherine MacGregor has made me laugh so much these days of COVID-19 when we all could use a laugh, she was awesome.
@@nelsonrodriguez6639 i love her... Harriet and Nels. I can still hear her screaming "Neeeeeels!" That show could never be duplicated! It was a wonderful show for kids. I'm 44 too by the way! I'm glad that they run the reruns. I think on the Hallmark channel! I love it. I was born in June of 75; 9 months after the show aired for the first time. I wish TV shows were still this awesome! Did you see the one when Laura ran awag because her baby brother passed away and she blamed herself. The Halloween ones were great. Nelly was a piece of work lol; Nels and Harriets daughter. She was so mean. Did you watch the Pilot? The very 1st one? It was a 2 hr special. The series aired weekly on a regular basis after the pilot. Thanks for replying!
@lilly lazer Yes mam! It certainly was. I watched faithfully every evening at 5 PM on channel 11. I watched the reruns. I was born in 75 so the show was new! It was on the air for 9 months when I was born. When it ended for good in '82i was just about to turn 7. It ended in May of '82 and I turned 7 a month later in June! I love the stories. The family was so awesome. I would wish I had their family. I loved the little house they lived in. The girls slept upstairs in their cozy little bed. The show is 1 of the best family shows ever. A full hour too. I wonder myself if there are any talented writers out there in Hollywood who could capture us the way Little House did. I miss that era in television. Thanks.
@lilly lazer twerking at 9?? That is really destructive. I'm not sure what twerking is but I think it's a move that these youngsters do and mistake as dancing! Lol. It is the parents. The parents are really immature these days. Your husband must have been really disgusted. It's only going to get worse. We're in for a rude awakening in 20 yrs.
I know right? I know Harriet and Nels kind of mentioned how they met but I think it would have been an interesting episode. If we get to see Caroline and Charles meet, why not Harriet and Nels?
You can't even image this show without her! She was just spectacular as an actress, she and Richard helped make this show want it is! I still watch it, it's a timeless well thought out good acting show!
Nobody ever talks about this actress. But she is one of the best comedic actresses in TV history. Somehow, she made you love Mrs. Olson, even though she was nasty and mean.

Yes Dean Harmon in the épisode where rev alden fells in love ..so sad for Harriet and she is touching in this épisode.. actually she never forgot Dean Harmon and had resentment for him thats why she blames rev Alden..a moving épisode..
No one else could have played the part of Mrs Olsen any better than Katherine & the same as Alison Arngrim playing the part as Nellie. I loved watching Little House on the Prairie as a child & still to this day I watch it when I catch it on tv. It's a show that grabs your attention & you laugh & even cry when there's sad parts of the show. Little House on the Prairie was the best show on television when I was growing up. It's a classic! ❤️😀
I was born in East Germany in 1965. Watched the series in the 1970s. Also in the 1980s. In the 1990s with my child. We laughed and we cried. It was a wonderful time. I bow down and say thank you.
I'll throw in another brilliant performer in the mix who I think would do well playing opposite the performers you mentioned. My suggestion is Larry Linville. He, too, was terrific at playing the antagonist. Can you imagine him playing off either of Carroll O'Connor, Katherine MacGregor, or Bea Arthur? Wow.
Character humor of this type is enhanced by her shapely figure, pretty face and great hair... trying to defy her age made it even funnier. Mike Landon saw all of this.
She so deserved the highest of honor for her role !! She was brilliant in this show !! Rest in Eternal Peace 🙏 U and so many others from the little house on the prairie will be truly missed !!
My husband knew Scotty MacGregor for many years and she was a really professional actress. Personally, she was a great lady and kind to all the children and families in the church that we all attended.
Loved the show and its reruns for years, brilliant!!! The character where all well choosen for their parts Harriet manly for Mrs Olsen she nailed her Character brilliantly, that was the reason I watched the show her and her spolt daughter and the lngels family always came on top every time, great teachings as money isn't everything!
I found it most impressive that she was able to bring laughter to a show which was known for the most heart-wrenching, depressing situations...yet her character didn't take away from the dramatic impact.
I can't EVEN imaaagine Little House without the fabulous histrionic contribution of Katherine MacGregor to this unique and wonderful show! Superb actress! I watch it on PLUTO TV every day, any time of the day, for free!
Omg... the telephone scene she's talking about around 5:46. I watched it for the first time just a couple days ago and I laughed so hard that my husband had to come check on me. I've been sick and nothing had made me laugh in the past week, but this scene almost killed me!!!!!! 🤣
I always wondered what kind of person she was in real life; she was funny naturally. Her laugh was the best. Even though Harriet was what she was, you always looked forward to seeing her. I still get just as much out of this show as when it was first airing. What a natural she was. I can’t thank you enough for posting this.
I read all the books. Watched all the episodes. This show was such a large part of my childhood. My heart breaks to watch Mr and Mrs Olsen as I know them and know they are no longer with us. I really didn’t know it would hurt this much..... this was the best show ever hands down.

All of us who watched Little House, were so very lucky to be able to tune in every week to see Mrs. MacGregor, and all the other talented actors, in this last of it's kind series! There will never be another Katherine MacGregor, so we will just have to cherish the amazing work she left behind for all of us!
Harriet was hilarious. We all.knew a mother like her. Thank you for making our lives better.
Katherine was the main reason I watched Little House. Her performance was of genius quality. Such a talent!!!
Thank you for the entertainment.
me too . i remember when i was a kid i was checking in the generic if Mrs Oleson was going to appear
😂😂😂
Such a vibrant and incredible actress! I am rewatching these as an adult and now I love her even more!
She played a villain who was also a regular on the show. that is not easy at all! She had to walk a fine line between making us despise her, while still viewing her as a human being. She pulled it off beautifully. Fantastic actress!
She was born to play this part. Simply amazing 💞💞💞
Katherine MacGregor is one of the best. As a kid I remember thinking how evil yet funny Mrs. Olsen was. A role that could only be pulled off by a genius actor.
+Larry Mentle
True, she IS a genius actor!
larry, how true..she always came off bitchy but funny and actually kind at heart
+Larry Mentle i could not stand her but she play that mean part n nelly i hated them lol
Wow she never aged !!
thañkyou for putting on telly again
Great to see Matt here! I know he has done some voice over work but it's a darn shame that he disappeared from acting! As far as Katherine MacGregor goes she was a brilliant actress and deserved to win multiple Emmys for her portrayal of Harriet Oleson!
She was really the most talented actress/actor on the show.
She really was one of the greatest actors on this show!!!!!
Harriett: "NELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLS!!"
Nels: "Yes, Dear..."
Rest in Peace, Nels...
born: 6/26/1924
died: 2/3/2014

Tiffanie Thomas you know who died the NEXT day? (Ralph Waite), "Pa Walton)..
Tiffanie Thomas rest in peace to Nells
Loved Them As A Couple. Amazing Actors!!!
Katherine MacGregor was one if the greatest character actors around. Perfect as Mrs Olsen!
What a gift she was to the show! A class act! 😊
I was blessed to have met Mr. Richard Bull a few times before his passing. He was a true gentleman, and most kind. I miss him.
Harold's Girl I really like him as well.
Thanks for sharing that sweet story ! It's always a joy to find out when our favorite performers are nice folk off screen !
Was he a lot like Mr. Oleson?
I wish i met him
A REAL actress and performer. She was THE icon of icons. RIP good lady.
She WAS Harriet. She brought that role to life. Superb acting…
Yes ❤
She was a true talent and definitely gave the show all it needed to make it perfect !! Rest in Eternal Peace Mrs Olsen ..we will never forget u !!
The only show, that went straight to my heart. The cast was just extraordinary. Everything was done so well, makes you feel as if you're there with them. In MY opinion best show ever made.
Ja,wirklich,ich wahr immer dabei😂😂😂😂
indeed , true values , love , community , family ...
She played her role to perfection❤️
Loves this Lady
She was brilliant and helped to make this show as great as it was. Such talent!
The scene with Samson was such a touching scene and today when I saw it again, that scene when Harriet touched my heart.
Oh yes this scene is so powerful. It was hard to hold back the tears
She just makes me smile, even now.
She was amazing!!! She and Richard were perfect together!
Yup, Richard Bull as Nels was excellent!!!!
Katherine was such a masterful actor. Nobody else could've played Harriet.
This is by far my favorite show. It’s so wholesome and nostalgic for me. I remember coming home from school everyday in my childhood home and looked forward to tuning into Little House on the Prairie. 💕
It was for the most part but that episode about Albert's girlfriend being molested by the guy in the mask terrified and disturbed me.
Katherine McGregor was such a great actress. She played her part so well. She made me laugh so hard whenever I watched Little House on the Prairie
Hi 👋 how're you doing?
*Michael Landon was a genius who left the world a beautiful, astounding legacy. Period. Without him, there would be no Ms. Olsen to love to hate and no Little House...which is still so darn beloved and perfect today.* ❤
Perfectly put!😭
That's whats wrong with this world today there is no Michael Landon !!!!
😢😭😭😨😰😥😓😪
@@notthesameman You didn't know they died until years later??? It was all over the news. Michael Landon was on Johnny Carson. It took him so quickly, Pancreatic cancer.
i've been watching this movie since i was about 20 or 25yrs old, now I'm 56 and i'm still watching again and again. Never been bored of. I love that family life of Michael Landon. Laura playing an important role since her childhood until the end.
Hello Joyce, how are you doing?
I love this show. Still watching it almost every day 2021. There was always something to learn from it. It was very inspirational.
For me she was the absolute star of the show. Her comic timing was magnificent and at times you loved to hate her. The realationship she had with the long suffering Nels was just fascinating.
Perfect casting.....brilliant character.
Hats off to you " Scottie !!! "
ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE. I'M STILL WATCHING AND I'M 48 YEARS OF AGE!I NEVER GET TIRED OF THIS SHOW!😊😊
Me to, same age, the show is on in Sweden, love it 😍
@@SuperNicko92 😊👍🏾
I’m 73 and my 7 year old granddaughter and I are watching it. We both love it.
@@patriciasmith7074 😁👍🏾👍🏾❤️💕
Same age me next month 49.Just used to watch little house"and Still watching.
I love her she was a great actor little house wouldn't have been the same without her
Michael Landon struck gold when he cast katherine macgregor as Mrs oleson.
indeed . i remember when i was a kid i was always checking in the generic if Mrs Oleson was going to appear
Mrs. Oleson was a pinch of pepper in the sweetness of the show. She made the series and should have been awarded at least 1 Emmy. RIP.
I still watch Little House! They don't make them like this anymore unfortunately!
Thanks.
@lilly lazer yes, I've watched COZI TV. I love it. I'm glad we have it to watch because todays TV sux!
I would've LOVED if they had did an episode on Little House on how Nels and Harriet had met. :)
That would've been genius!
I know right? I know Harriet and Nels kind of mentioned how they met but I think it would have been an interesting episode. If we get to see Caroline and Charles meet, why not Harriet and Nels?
I would have liked that as well.
That would have been great!!!
She n Nels should've had their own show.
I loved this character so much. She played it brilliantly.
You can't even image this show without her! She was just spectacular as an actress, she and Richard helped make this show want it is! I still watch it, it's a timeless well thought out good acting show!
Hello Angela, how are you doing?
Nobody ever talks about this actress. But she is one of the best comedic actresses in TV history. Somehow, she made you love Mrs. Olson, even though she was nasty and mean.
I agree! True legend. Harriet was definitely a woman you loved to hate.
She was like a self centered little kid. Nellie fell not far from the tree.
You're an idiot.
Why dumb? A no brainer that this woman was just like Nellie when she was younger. I hold degrees BTW dumbass. Lol! At least I have a classy, intelligent name. Not a coward that uses Insert??? And I can think of plenty a name to use.. Lol!
Princess Margaret
Just like Mrs Oleson. What a loser you are. Callin people bitches.
I am a Japanese. I watch this show on NHK 4K every Wednesday. I am impressed every time with the story. I have known about her death recently. Rest In Peace, Katherine, praying from Japan.
She stole the limelight in every scene she was in. I just loved her.❤️👌🏻
She was wonderful. I loved her and Nels. My favorite show. Never missed an episode when it debuted in 1974. I’m 63 now and I still watch reruns. I dreamed of having three daughters. I had one son but he’s given me two terrific granddaughters so far.
David Haber, they were the let's say THE FUNNIEST power 🤣🔋 couple 👩🏻❤️💋👨🏻 of Walnut Grove, MN.
Harriet Oleson was The Wicked Witch of Walnut Grove...no one could play her better than Katherine MacGregor. Great interview.
She was not a witch. Stop being mean for no reason.
Yeah she wasnt a witch she certainly had a good heart, she was just snooty.
I just found out today that she passed away. She brought such energy to the role and spice to Walnut Grove! Katherine was fantastic. Thanks for uploading.
Aww...it has brought back such good memories when I used to sit down in the mornings and watch my favorite show! I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen on the next episode...lol I remember crying when Charles and Laura would have a heart to heart talk, and how I wished my dad was like Charles in so many ways. Shoot even Caroline I wanted as my mom. I want to go back there again and again. I miss it so! I must have seen all the re-runs1000 times and willing to sit down and see them all again like it was my first time! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting this together. 💗 💗 💗 💗
Hello how are you doing?
One of my all time favorite characters in TV history. Loved her and the Oleson family so much and loved when in the opening credits we knew they were appearing in that episode
Katherine was a humorous actor and will be sorely missed! Thank you for all the laughters!
I loved the supposed back story with her and the preacher that she was engaged to. You saw a gentler, vulnerable side to her.
Yes Dean Harmon in the épisode where rev alden fells in love ..so sad for Harriet and she is touching in this épisode.. actually she never forgot Dean Harmon and had resentment for him thats why she blames rev Alden..a moving épisode..
Priceless. Katherine was so incredible in the role.
💯
No one else could have played the part of Mrs Olsen any better than Katherine & the same as Alison Arngrim playing the part as Nellie. I loved watching Little House on the Prairie as a child & still to this day I watch it when I catch it on tv. It's a show that grabs your attention & you laugh & even cry when there's sad parts of the show. Little House on the Prairie was the best show on television when I was growing up. It's a classic! ❤️😀
She brought so much to that show I forgot how much I liked her.
Scott H she was my favorite
Mrs. Olsen. My favorite character on the show. She was hilarious!!
Gina Kaye agree
Oleson
Gina Kaye. Oh, my favorite was Almonzo! I always fancied him and I remember as a kid, hoping Laura would end up with him!
Shes so underrated. Fine actress
Hello Beth, how are you doing?
I agree! And Richard (the man who played her husband) played off her perfectly 🥰
I was born in East Germany in 1965. Watched the series in the 1970s. Also in the 1980s. In the 1990s with my child. We laughed and we cried. It was a wonderful time. I bow down and say thank you.
Can you imagine Carroll O’Connor, Bea Arthur, and Katherine McGregor playing opposite each other on a sit-com? The fireworks would never end!!!!!
🤣🤣🤣
Loved Mrs Olson. R.i.p Mrs Olson.
A big brawl would take place!😎
IIRC Katherine actually had a guest spot as a hospital nurse in the All In the Family episode about Edith's breast cancer scare.
Wow.
@@docadams7099 yes!!! LMAO! That man is like the picky boss or neighbor type. He would also make a good Scrooge! Very good choice!
Character humor of this type is enhanced by her shapely figure, pretty face and great hair... trying to defy her age made it even funnier. Mike Landon saw all of this.
I always thought she had incredibly gorgeous hair!!😊
She was what was considered a handsome woman. I always thought she was pretty.
She so deserved the highest of honor for her role !! She was brilliant in this show !! Rest in Eternal Peace 🙏
U and so many others from the little house on the prairie will be truly missed !!
She played this brilliantly. Her dresses and hats were great.
This lady was superb at her character can't imagine anyone else playing her Part 👍
My husband knew Scotty MacGregor for many years and she was a really professional actress. Personally, she was a great lady and kind to all the children and families in the church that we all attended.
Who is scotty McGregor
She was the best. Such a great actress. She's my favorite part of watching the show even today
SHE PORTRAYED ONE OF THE GREATEST CHARACTERS IN TELEVISION HISTORY
Absolutely.
phantom collector yes she did
Omg... the telephone scene she's talking about around 5:46. I watched it for the first time just a couple days ago and I laughed so hard that my husband had to come check on me. I've been sick and nothing had made me laugh in the past week, but this scene almost killed me!!!!!! 🤣
Laughter is the best medicine. 😊
Even if you didn’t watch this show back in the day, Little House on the Prairie still takes you back.
I totally agree with you...my favorite show ever
I agree .. but they will life forever ... again and again we watch them on the screen 😊
@lilly lazer you are so right. No cars look like space ships .. no plastic woman .. just natural humans and a lot of real life .
Man-I’m watching the HD version of Little House in 2020 and really was curious about the person behind Mrs. Olsen-and I am blown away by the sheer color of Katherine McGregor! She is a masterpiece just retelling the character she brought to life! What a funny lady! I bet she was the life of every party! ❤️ Little House was such good tv 📺 Good, wholesome entertainment!
Can I just tell you how much joy she brought my dad watching the re runs in his last days. She was his favorite and Nellie and Harriet are his two all time favorites.
