Season 1 animation was cool but the story wasn't great, Askelad carried all of season 1 and now without askelad nor the awesome animation it is very lack luster. I would hate to risk ruining someone's experience of the story but I would be fascinated to show someone season 2 first and then treat season one as like a prequel and see how that might alter someone's perception of what the show is actually going for. It would also build up a ton of cool mystery with thorfinn and who askeladd is and how thorfinn ended up there, and I think season 2 actually gives enough of thorfinn's backstory that even without season one a view could still understand, I mean thorfinn's dreams say plenty even without seeing the first season.

    Even the part on the farm is about violence and warfare because the slaves who are FORCED to work there are the victims of all the violence and destruction that the Vikings wrought. They are subject to constant humiliations by the retainers and their masters so the entire work emphasises the virtue of (and need for) non-violence because Einar and Thorfinn would not be in this position if it weren't for the raiding and pillaging that was part of the invasion of England.
    Vinland Saga is also directly about Thorfinn's internal conflict and how he wrestles with the guilt he feels over his violent past and how he decides to move forward, having recently lost his reason and desire to live and it's only thanks to people like Einar that he managed to find a way to eventually make peace with himself.

      Too often I see people say “you’re not supposed to relate to Denji, wtf. No one able to watch anime and talk about it on the internet has had a life as fucked up as he had. If you relate to him you have problems”. Not the point; I don’t relate to his experiences, I relate to his feelings and how he tackles his problems in social settings.
      Similarly, one can relate to Eren’s rage and powerlessness towards the world, or to Guts’ struggle to take control of his own life, etc.

But then, you get to the scene where Einar says to Thorfinn, "I don't see you as a warrior," and you realize that Thorfinn doesn't look or behave at all like the kid from season 1. We are conditioned to think of Thorfinn as a cool, violent warrior who would kill anyone without remorse, and then Einar sweeps the rug from beneath our feet.

    I always thought the series was more phylosophical than it is political. Stories are told in a more personal and intimate sense. Sure there were political issues being touched but i don't think we would have gotten Thorfinn's inner struggle and his nightmares had we gone to a more political route.

    • @GaspoweR
      @GaspoweR Рік тому +15

      The intent or the work itself may not be “political” as people often would say (because people have an aversion of the term to the point that they end up being too literal with what it means) but everything that happens within one’s day to day activities is somewhat political in nature even if the intent in this particular work in your mind is “philosophical” but it works even better when you find out the political ramifications of the setting like class dynamics, why wars were fought and waged, land ownership, etc.
      All of those things in the background of the story just helps with the overall personal journey of the characters and it helps readers think even deeper about how it affects them at a personal level when you see how these events play out. One example that people would think isn’t political but Thorfinn’s personal journey of revenge as a warrior and struggling to start a new life as a farm worker is similar to how war veterans try to come back and acclimate to normal life after being in active service in conflict zones.

The natural extension of this is that it's necessary to deal with the show's politics to have any philosophical substance, i.e. "What is a true warrior under feudalism's class struggle?"

      The character development of many characters, including Thorfinn, is directly influenced by the political atmosphere. Their motivations, actions, and destinies are all intertwined with the political struggles of their time. For instance, the quest for power and dominance by characters like Askeladd and Canute is a clear manifestation of the political tensions. While the philosophical elements in Vinland Saga are definitely significant such as explorations of revenge, honor, and pacifism, they often serve as an underpinning to the political narrative rather than a driving force in their own right. But honestly you could see it either way.

    dude, this is why Golden Kamuy is peak historical fiction. (to be clear: not _instead_ of Vinland Saga, but in _addition_ to Vinland Saga... I love Vinland Saga.)
    like... Golden Kamuy's approach to historical fiction is to research history, then take all the little interesting bits from whatever you find and mash them up in a historically accurate setting. so each cast member might have some very direct and specific historical influences, but the character might not be based on only one person, or live their life in the exact same way. they may not even share the same name or exact appearance as their influences. and this remixing quality allows for the story to be told in the way the author decides, without presuming too much, or accidentally mischaracterizing real historical people. what's nice is that the setting is so well researched, and the conflicts are so realistically imagined, that you can sink right in and really believe that these people would function this way. it's incredibly inventive.

      Golden Kamuy is such a good action/adventure, human drama, war story, treasure hunt, historical fiction, comedy, and cooking show... it's at least the best story that does all of these at once.

  • @gryph0n55
    @gryph0n55 Рік тому +8

    That’s the thing about Vinland Saga, it’s NOT an action story, it’s a character piece. It’s an exploration of Thorfinn’s character. It just happens that the story of Thorfinn’s character is one drenched in violence, and instead of just making that a backstory we briefly see we get to actually spend a large chunk of time in that backstory.
    Think about it like Thors (Thorfinn’s father). His backstory was of a warrior, but that wasn’t his story. We get to briefly see his warrior past so we can understand how capable he was and get an idea of what he went through. But the intention of his place in the story was to see what someone like that does AFTER the violence and see how they handle it when violence tries to come for them again.
    This is a reflection for Thorfinn. But since he’s the main character the warrior history is fully explored instead of just a flashback. That’s what people mean when they say the first season is just the prologue, it literally is just setting up the circumstances that lead to Thorfinn’s real journey.
    And don’t get me wrong, there’s action in the story. For people who really enjoyed the prologue you’ll have a lot of fun when the War in the Baltic Arc happens. But I’d argue it’s better than the prologue because it has a ton of action AND it’s well into the exploration of Thorfinn’s character.

I'm from the rural south, that dynamic of "peasants" getting a sense of gratification from feeling superior to someone beneath them despite being poor themselves is at the root of a lot of racism. Vinland Saga has a very obvious and and strong anti-slavery message, so it definitely wasn't coincidental from Yukimura. Thorfinn spends almost all of season 1 going berserk and the second that Askelaad dies, his entire purpose and justificaion for his killing dies with it. Now he must face what he has done, and his solution is to build and create to attone for previously being there only to destroy. The show also shows you where this season is going. Both Canoute and Thorfinn both want peace. Canoute is willing to 'fight the last war' because he believes only he will bring peace. Thorfinn believes that war will never bring peace and the cycle will always continue. A classic, but briliantly done, 'do the ends justify the means' dilemma

    Season 2 is simply a masterpiece because of what we know from season 1. Thorfinn's character growth shines so brightly in season 2. Just to simplify it, season 1 was pretty much Thorfinn being the exact opposite of what a genuine warrior is. His dad pretty much defined that a true warrior is one that can solve problems through pacifism. Clearly, it didn't turn out that way for Thorfinn in S1.
    Season 2 is when Thorfinn learns and realizes what his father was trying to tell him all along. By the end of the season, Thorfinn delivers the same iconic line (like what Thors said in S1) with King Canute. It's legit the ultimate redemption arc.

    I feel like Hasan latched onto the concept of slavery and classism and didn't think of much else. The retainers destroying the crops thorfinn and his friend made to buy back their freedom wasn't simply classism, it was that same theme of pulling each other down that was present from season 1. From Askeladd pulling Thorfinn into death, bloodshed and violence, that was always the theme, those retainers weren't only pushing classism, attempting to pull thorfinn's potential down in order to bring themselves up in comparison to something, they were also bringing thorfinn down to their level when it comes to mindless violence itself, making him almost re-enter the land of warriors, the path Askeladd forced him down and he only got away from because of change. In that way, him being a slave wasn't just about the classism of being one, but the fact he arguably had just as much freedom being a slave with no ideals, or desire to hold to his own, push logs and making farms for another man as when he was killing every man on the castle walls for another man, the season has been about how an empty man who only remembers being filled with hatred grew able to enjoy life, and avoid the monster he used to be, gaining mental and physical freedom in the process. Classism is too simple, too lame a word for what's going in here.

I feel like he's trying to push an agenda out of Vinland Saga. I think Vinland saga is combination of politics and philosophy with psychology in it, I think Thorfin's point of view is more of philosophical and psychological rathen than politics. Both seasons are great but they differ in impact. I guess my only complain with the season 2 is, it's kinda slow paced. I feel like they tried to extend the story when it's not supposed to be extended, I mean I feel like they added stuff in order to reach 24 episodes. Hasan is a "communist" who got where he is because he's the nephew of Cenk Uygur, makes millions from stealing other people's content and lives in his sprawling LA mansion.
      Oh, and he's a coward who is content calling for violence but runs and hides when Sam Hyde gives him a chance to put his money where his mouth is.

    There's this manga called The Dragon, The Hero, and The Courier. It's a classic medieval fantasy setting, but it instead goes for a satire on modern bueracracy and politics instead. The neato thing is that every end of chapter has the author explaining what they found in research, like the practice of scraping ink off letters to reuse expensive parchment.

    It bothers me so much how often people say Thorfinn's name wrong. Even the Japanese do a much better job than English speakers. I mean, I guess you all don't pronounce Thor correctly either, so it's not a shock, but damn... the h in Thorfinn is silent. Thor is pronounced like Tor.

      Not that I’m aware of, but the main reason Hasan got on is because he’s a big Twitch gamer dude who happens to be political, not because he’s a big political guy. He exists in the same space as Sykkuno, Pokimane, Ludwig, xcq, etc. I wouldn’t expect someone like Vaush or Matt Walsh to get invited on, because they don’t exist in the same sphere.
