    Thorfinn is honestly someone I look up to and try to pattern my life after. Hardly a day goes by where I don't think about his philosophy he learned from Thors to have no enemies. This series is truly a masterpiece. I hope we get a season three because (NO SPOILERS) we aren't even halfway through the story yet.

    Canute bursting into laughter after seeing what sort of person Thorfinn has become is similar to Askeladd laughing in Season 1 after witnessesing Canute's transformation.
    Askeladd also changed immediately, committing himself to serving his new Artorious.
    Canute discovered that sparing Thorfinn years ago was the best decision. Realizing this silenced the voice of Sweyn in his head and allowed him to become a benevolent ruler.

    What is funny is that when Canute said "who did you take after ?" (About being eloquent) Everyone says immediately "His father" but in my mind, it's more Askeladd for the eloquence part no ? Indeed, his father teached him the way of non-violence but the eloquence part is more an Askeladd thing in my opinion :D What do you guys think ?

    Canute is not drunk in power ,its the complete contrary , the power WEIGHTS on him A LOT ,which is represented by his always somber semblance AND by his father constantly haunting his thoughts.
    He knows that the viking way is to fight.conquer and pillage until they die and that causes endless bloodshed ,BECAUSE WE CANT HAVE A PARADISE on EARTH ,BECAUSE WE FAILED GOD and ruined paradise, WE can never find peace and Canute thought that the only way around was to conquer everything under only one hand as the only option left.BECAUSE HE THOUGHT PEOPLE CANT CHANGE ,which Thorfinn proved him wrong.

      This is how I interpreted it. He doesn't believe people failed God, but that God expects humans to love others unconditionally like he does, yet God himself took that ability away from them. So he rebels against God and the "trials" he has set for humanity.

    • @yukiotakata
      @yukiotakata Рік тому

      @@SolProxy That could be a very good interpretation if you take the nihilistic teachings of the drunk priest as the dogma Canute would follow.
      Except that even in the crazy interpretation the drunk priest made of the bible,it was not GOD who took away men capability to love unconditionally ,men did it themselves.
      The drunk bastard thought that God created men,men were violent , so violence was part of god will for men ,an inevitable choice.
      If Canute wanted to rebel against God based on that premise,IMHO he would be pacifist and not a conqueror.

    • @SolProxy
      @SolProxy Рік тому +3

      @@yukiotakata He wants to peace, but he believes it can't be achieved without unifying humanity, and that needs war (which he still tries to avoid). Paradise exists only in Heaven but not on Earth, so he wishes to create paradise on Earth which would be going against God's plan. So in that way he's rebelling.

    It's crazy to think about how many people were indirectly saved by the actions of a single person (Torfin). The oppression of the King canude would have continued endlessly if it weren't for him. The lesson I take from this is that sometimes you just need to try; nobody else considered simple dialogue except for him.

      @@FZJanimatedIt's not because he's drunk on power though. It's because he believes he has to be a ruler strong and violent enough to rule the vikings so that he can save them. He wants to obtain as much power as he can so the vikings respect him and then he can change their beliefs.

    • @chaoticstarfish3401
      @chaoticstarfish3401 Рік тому +10

      Yes, Canute had been struggling because of all the scheming and backstabbing involved in his coronation and rule. He wasn't drunk on power; he was scared because he had been doing things alone and everyone was potentially someone who wanted him dead, which is why he would get the upper hand somehow before all negotiations, and focused so much on military power to control the population. But because of all this, he started fearing that he would become like Sweyn, which is why he sees Sweyn's ghost taunting him so often.
      Thanks to Thorfinn, Canute saw that not everyone wants to stab him in the back, and that diplomacy and respect should ideally be attempted before any act of violence. I've seen many saying that it's unrealistic for Canute to give up the farm and leave, but he never wanted to do it in the first place; he only needed the farm because of his insistence on military might, so he just needed Thorfinn's push to overcome his fears and become a more diplomatic king.

    Interesting fact is that the Episode 1 of season 1 is named "Someplace is not here" and now they're leaving the farm with words : "Someplace is not here".
    Stages of GOATland Saga:
    Season 1 is "Someplace is not here".
    Season 2 is "This place is not here, but I know where".
    Season 3 is the "Hard road to that place".
    Season 4 is the "Which way will lead us to paradise?"
    Season 5 is "Father, that place is right in front of me". 😢

    When Canute asks Thorfinn who he takes after, the look on his face as he narrows his eyes reminds me more of Askeladd's than Thors. In spite of his actions, he was Thorfinns father figure for longer than Thors was even alive. I think Thorfinn had a good ol silent realization there. So now he has to grapple with the fact that he is like both of them; Thors' ideals, and Askeladd's way with words/skill in battle.

    I had to go back to be sure because I really thought I had seen that before and it was at the beginning of everything.
    The message this arc was trying to pass to us didn't make sense at the start, but at the ending the message became that obvious to anybody who followed along this wonderful story (and animation + art direction + soundtrack).

    @CimmerianAssassin Рік тому +5

    I feel like you misunderstand Canute quite a bit. He is honestly really going much against his own character knowing that the naivete of his previous incarnation of himself was not working. He became someone that was willing to defy his own being in order to make the paradise that he wants. It was the way he deemed that was required. He didn't see it that way at all. Thorfinn becomes a pacifist that even Canute could not become. He sees a new future in Thorfinn, one that he could have never imagined. But he also understands the world of man that he lives in and that power is going to be required in the part of the world they are in. Canute is just trying to find peace even if he wills it. If he ultimately could attain such a peace without power, he would, but he can't. Canute is just trying his best and as dark as it maybe, his way in the world he lives is required even if it goes entirely against his actual character.
