Angelina Jordan is a musical guru.. a genius.. a phenom. She is quite possibly the most naturally gifted vocalist in world history. She is the ONLY vocalist that moves me to tears virtually every time I hear her sing, (and I’m a 58 year old Navy Veteran). She is an old soul, well beyond her years. She is to be enjoyed and treasured. Great review… I always love watching people listen to this for the first time. Imagine being her vocal coach; trying to teach someone that is truly better than you must be an incredible challenge.

Wow is exactly what everyone who sees this performance has said. The more you hear her sing the more it's apparent that she is a genuine gift to the arts and to humanity. You're going to continue to be unprepared for her many other covers. Most agree that her cover are better than the original artist (s).
She's not just a nine year genius, she's a nine year old genius with a band--a band who respect her. She was already doing things that many adult singers only dream of. She heard Screamin' Jay Hawkins and decided she wanted to sing it and created this wonderful rendition, at 9. Dear Megan, she was 9 years old. Her parents rented the studio including the band for her. Later on a band member told about it. At that point in time she was already famous in Norway for winning NGT. They didn't recognize her and they thought, that it was a joke for the little girl by her parents. The first inkling they got, when she brought them her arrangements and ask very civilly to act on her wishes. The gentleman smiling is the director at the studio. You might have noticed at the beginning of the song, the the bassist was smirking, BUT a few seconds on into the song, they didn't see a little girl, but a seasoned artist knowing exactly what she was doing. From that day on, so it is said, professional musicians in Norway nicknamed her with affection "THE BOSS". On stage she might be barefoot, but she rules!!!! ;))
Just turned nine two months previous to this production. Though she follows Screaming Jay Hawkins lyrics she arranged them and the instruments into what she wanted. You see her in the beginning writing change notes to the director. He has stated that she was very polite as she called them her wishes. There is a rehearsal where she is letting the band know what she wants. Imagine these seasoned musicians reaction after the set was finished and the conversations they had among themselves, friends and family. Quite sure the knew they had witnessed history. She is known affectionately as the boss.

I never hear anyone else attack that word like that in other covers of this, and it is just perfect. Another one is the way she twirls the notes around with her finger at 7:03. But trying to list all the little masterful things she does in a song (any song), would literally take pages. This is an undeniable genius at work.
Rusty, at 7:03 Angelina does several things that are just superb! The first thing is she sings from "I don't care.." until the end of the piece in a minor key that isn't used in the rest of the piece, Second this phrase is a cappella except for a few piano notes which indicates to me that she has perfect pitch. Finally, her sustain in this last phrase is well beyond what one could expect from a singer at this age. These three things demonstrate techniques that some adults would be proud to show. I don't know if at age 9 she knows the music theory behind using this minor key or if to her it just sounds right, but it is pure brilliance!! Like you said a person could write pages and pages for any one song to describe how Angelina puts her magic touch on any particular song!!!!

Emotion is more than just sadness. This performance is extremely emotional and is definitely meant to be that way. It’s her ability to muster all those incredible vocal techniques, her timing, breath control etc.to convey that emotion which, in the final analysis, is what makes her performance so remarkable.

The fact that our barefoot angel Angelina is so relaxed throughout the entire performance , including when she's not singing, but listening to the band and at the end after she has sung her last note, she continues to look relaxed as she listens to the band finish, as if she is gauging whether they did their part the way she wanted it is incredible . I have watched hundreds (thousands?) of reactions to her singing. I have watched, I think, almost every reaction to her masterpiece version of "I put a spell on you" and you just wiped away my previous "best reaction opinion". I've seen many first time reactors to this but yours is my FAVORITE ! I put this reaction in my archives. My favorites used to be your first reaction to PTX and Home Free. Angelina not only sings like a seasoned pro but she also arranges the songs. There are several videos showing her from age 8 to now showing the grown professional musicians how she "wishes" the song be performed.They call her "The Boss". Others will let you know the story of why she only performs barefoot. She is gifted but has worked diligently from early childhood to improve her craft. The best part for us fans is we get the privilege of watching her growth thru the videos that her Grandmother has recorded over the years and it is fascinating. At age 11 she recorded her first original "What is Life". Her growth from this video to age 10 is exceptional because she has many covers at 10 that are amazing. I prefer the official lyric video because we can let go of our projections of who she is... and hear the emotion. She has said she was crying while recording this version, and one has to be quite callous not to be moved. She and her grandmother created the art together, and there are some aspects of perfection achieved that are superior. She sings most of the 'live studio' version with her eyes closed and her body very quiet, which is her way, so I'm not sure why people are so fascinated by it. At least my reaction was jaw dropping, then laughing in disbelief, deep emotions running through me, and then just being kind of hypnotized. Also you should know Angelina is THE BOSS. She knows exactly how she wants a song to be sung, how the band was suppose to sound, etc. You'll see how this amazing little cute girl has now turned into a 6 feet tall 14, almost 15 year old. I always enjoy someone seeing this video for the first time and yours is no exception, Megan. I've watched a LOT of Angelina reactions, many in different languages, most with subtitles. You know what I've learned from all that? It seems that "wow" is "wow" in almost all of them. This recording was a tip of the cap to Screaming Jay Hawkins, the writer and original performer of the some. She has four other performances, all much tamer than this without as many growls, but they're all terrific. I believe Angelina's two greatest strengths are lyric interpretation and the ability to translate those lyrics into emotion and then transfer to the listener. As near as I have been able to count so far, Angelina's UA-cam catalog has 132 songs, with four originals written by her, although as with most artists she had co-writers helping in some. With multiple performances at different ages/venues I've found 270 different videos. So the rabbit hole is deep, but sweetly traveled. I doubt you would be disappointed in any of them. I would add, Angelina has an ear for other singers and an ability to sing in their styles. I have heard her sing very credibly as Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, Whitney Houston, Adele, and Ella Fitzgerald. I have never heard any other singer do a credible Dinah Washington, one of my personal favorites. Her voice is very unique.

@@gary-white- Gary, To me the mark of a master is being able to perform in your own style, but also capable of credibly performing in another's style. My best example would be SRV playing Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo child lick for lick and better. There is also a scene in "Standing in the shadows of Mowtown" where a drummer demonstrates drum lead ins of epic drummers, pointing out what makes each unique. I would not peg Angelina as a mimic, but rather one that has heard some of the best singers, and is able to sing material in their style if she chooses. She has a style of her own too, which I adore. On the topic of exceptional singers, have you listened to Dimash ? Lara Fabian ? Beth Hart ( Beth does "I'd rather go blind", Nina Simone cover with Joe Bonamassa in Amsterdam.) Definitely worth a listen !

No worries about being speechless or shocked. We all know the feeling. That's why it is requested so much. Angelina is unbelievable here. You will come to love her vibrato as it changes through time, styles and genres. Her breathy voice, her vocal fry, her runs and other ornaments all added when they enhance the feeling of the song. This song is top 5 for me. She has a couple other videos of this song when she's older. They are fun but her "beast mode" here is mind blowing. Lots of suggestions in comments to both reactions. I've listened to these five more than all others (although not by much in many cases. Well, Million Miles will have to catch up but its moving fast - with a bullet, as they say.) and they are the ones I will listen till the end even in the face of a crappy reactor. Dear Megan, she was 9 years old. Her parents rented the studio including the band for her. Later on a band member told about it. At that point in time she was already famous in Norway for winning NGT. They didn't recognize her and they thought, that it was a joke for the little girl by her parents. The first inkling they got, when she brought them her arrangements and ask very civilly to act on her wishes. The gentleman smiling is the director at the studio. You might have noticed at the beginning of the song, the the bassist was smirking, BUT a few seconds on into the song, they didn't see a little girl, but a seasoned artist knowing exactly what she was doing. From that day on, so it is said, professional musicians in Norway nicknamed her with affection "THE BOSS". On stage she might be barefoot, but she rules!!!! ;))
Just turned nine two months previous to this production. Though she follows Screaming Jay Hawkins lyrics she arranged them and the instruments into what she wanted. You see her in the beginning writing change notes to the director. He has stated that she was very polite as she called them her wishes. There is a rehearsal where she is letting the band know what she wants. Imagine these seasoned musicians reaction after the set was finished and the conversations they had among themselves, friends and family. Quite sure the knew they had witnessed history. She is known affectionately as the boss.

She's changed a few little things to suit her own taste, but if you were to listen to Jay''s version, you would even be more amazed at this little girl's talents.

You asked in the description, "what's your favorite part?". There are really too many to list in this one, but one of my favorite things is something kind of subtle and nobody ever mentions it, but it's that punchy way she says the word "spell" in "I put a spell on you". I never hear anyone else attack that word like that in other covers of this, and it is just perfect. Another one is the way she twirls the notes around with her finger at 7:03. But trying to list all the little masterful things she does in a song (any song), would literally take pages. This is an undeniable genius at work.

Rusty, at 7:03 Angelina does several things that are just superb! The first thing is she sings from "I don't care.." until the end of the piece in a minor key that isn't used in the rest of the piece, Second this phrase is a cappella except for a few piano notes which indicates to me that she has perfect pitch. Finally, her sustain in this last phrase is well beyond what one could expect from a singer at this age. These three things demonstrate techniques that some adults would be proud to show. I don't know if at age 9 she knows the music theory behind using this minor key or if to her it just sounds right, but it is pure brilliance!!

For another example just as startling see her cover of Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" on Norway's Got Talent (English subs version) when she was 7. Here, 2 yrs later, she was emulating the original version of this song by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, whose face was on the candle at the beginning. On the earlier one, you can detect some of the vocal inflections of Billie Holiday. She used to sing along with the originals in her grandmother's record collection.
Angelina sings every song beautifully. If you think this song was emotional, you are in for a big surprise when you listen to her songs that are actually meant to be emotional. Her new release Million Miles, and her cover of Adele's A Million Years Ago are guaranteed to pluck your heartstrings.
Emotion is more than just sadness. This performance is extremely emotional and is definitely meant to be that way. It’s her ability to muster all those incredible vocal techniques, her timing, breath control etc.to convey that emotion which, in the final analysis, is what makes her performance so remarkable.

Angelina not only sings like a seasoned pro but she also arranges the songs. There are several videos showing her from age 8 to now showing the grown professional musicians how she "wishes" the song be performed.They call her "The Boss". Others will let you know the story of why she only performs barefoot. She is gifted but has worked diligently from early childhood to improve her craft. I prefer the official lyric video because we can let go of our projections of who she is... and hear the emotion. She has said she was crying while recording this version, and one has to be quite callous not to be moved. She and her grandmother created the art together, and there are some aspects of perfection achieved that are superior. She sings most of the 'live studio' version with her eyes closed and her body very quiet, which is her way, so I'm not sure why people are so fascinated by it. I always enjoy someone seeing this video for the first time and yours is no exception, Megan. I've watched a LOT of Angelina reactions, many in different languages, most with subtitles. You know what I've learned from all that? It seems that "wow" is "wow" in almost all of them. This recording was a tip of the cap to Screaming Jay Hawkins, the writer and original performer of the some. She has four other performances, all much tamer than this without as many growls, but they're all terrific. I believe Angelina's two greatest strengths are lyric interpretation and the ability to translate those lyrics into emotion and then transfer to the listener.
As near as I have been able to count so far, Angelina's UA-cam catalog has 132 songs, with four originals written by her, although as with most artists she had co-writers helping in some. With multiple performances at different ages/venues I've found 270 different videos. So the rabbit hole is deep, but sweetly traveled. I doubt you would be disappointed in any of them.

I would add, Angelina has an ear for other singers and an ability to sing in their styles. I have heard her sing very credibly as Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, Whitney Houston, Adele, and Ella Fitzgerald. I have never heard any other singer do a credible Dinah Washington, one of my personal favorites. Her voice is very unique.

@@gary-white- Gary, To me the mark of a master is being able to perform in your own style, but also capable of credibly performing in another's style. My best example would be SRV playing Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo child lick for lick and better. There is also a scene in "Standing in the shadows of Mowtown" where a drummer demonstrates drum lead ins of epic drummers, pointing out what makes each unique. I would not peg Angelina as a mimic, but rather one that has heard some of the best singers, and is able to sing material in their style if she chooses. She has a style of her own too, which I adore. On the topic of exceptional singers, have you listened to Dimash ? Lara Fabian ? Beth Hart ( Beth does "I'd rather go blind", Nina Simone cover with Joe Bonamassa in Amsterdam.) Definitely worth a listen !

@@kevingood4644 Haha! My top five are Bohemian Rhapsody, Summertime (NGT), I Put a Spell On You, I'd Rather Go Blind and, just in, Million Miles. I've listened to these five more than all others (although not by much in many cases. Well, Million Miles will have to catch up but its moving fast - with a bullet, as they say.) and they are the ones I will listen till the end even in the face of a crappy reactor. I really tire easily of reactors who are about primping rather than telling me anything. The next five or so would be very close.
