9 year old Angelina Jordan owns the band and blows the roof off. Please take note of the very end of the video where you can see Angelina pondering her performance. She is her own toughest critic.
She woke up that morning, had a bowl of Fruity Pebbles, rode to the studio in her booster seat, provided the director with her list of changes to the score, sang in the voice of a 50 year old woman who had just smoked 13 packs of cigarettes, recorded the most amazing vocal performance I’ve heard in my 69 years, ended with her Mona Lisa smile, and melted the hearts of millions. I’ve listened to this song more than 100 times and it still brings tears to my eyes.
She is 9. Did you notice at the beginning she held a prayer candle with picture of the original artist and she made some changes to her own sheet music . She even is reading the music & counting the beat!
Another spell was cast by 9 yo Angelina. Let’s analyze the video: 1st you see how small and cute she is. 2nd you see she is barefoot (story below) 3rd You see her making her “list of suggested changes” to the song. 4th the band leader taking note of the changes. 5th Angelina is holding a candle with “Screemin’ Jay Hawkin’s (original artist 1956) picture on it. 6th the old soul in her voice. She is the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina wrote and her Grandmother illustrated a book about why she sings barefoot. She was on a trip to Iran where her grandmother is from and met a street girl weighing people for money. Angelina sat and talk with the girl. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, a Doctor but that it could never happen. Angelina told her to never give up hope. The girl complimented Angelina on her shoes and Angelina noticed her scarred bare feet so she gave them to her, and the little girl told Angelina she would pray for her every day. Angelina sings barefoot to this day to remind the world that there are still children in need. All proceeds go to charity.
Great Angelina reaction, DJ. As a retired music educator, I used to post comments that young singers should emulate Angelina, but to be very careful with the belting and whistle tones like she does here. They could seriously damage their vocal cords and no longer be able to sing. (Hey, you're a voice teacher. You already know that.) If you watch subsequent performances of this by Angelina, she cuts back on the belting a little bit and does a high "Whoo" instead of the whistle tone. I imagine one of her voice coaches suggested to her (I don't think anyone tells Angelina what to do) to go easier on those so as not to hurt her voice. If you want to hear another example of her impeccable timing, watch or, better yet, react to her sing "What A Difference A Day Makes" when she was 8-years old. Her styling is similar to that of Dinah Washington, but for an 8-year old to dance around notes and empty space the way she does is astounding. Some professional jazz singers can't do what she does. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/ZSfgCIGd7k4/v-deo.html You can thank me later!
Hi Robert - Thanks for sending DJ that link. That is one of my favorite videos Angelina does. I think it was like the 2nd or 3rd I ran into and I've been hooked on it ever since. A full band presentation and vocal backup for a little girl? What the heck is that about...I found out soon enough. I started seeking out her live jazz performances and I still am in awe of what she does in front of a crowd. Such composure and confidence...can't believe what I'm seeing sometimes.
Thanks for another good reaction to my favourite singer. She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The diffences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. In this video did you notice:Angelina finishing some notes and handing them to the pianist, who smiled as he read them? They were her wishes (instructions) to the band how she wished therm to play the music. Then a brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, a well known and respected Iranian artist, who is also Angelina's maternal grandmother and the person who encouraged Angelina in her love of music, especially jazz. And then there is a shot of Angelina holding a candle upon which was an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Lastly, did you notice how the "performing" Angelina, singing at a level of maturity far beyond her years, suddenly became a 9-year-old child almost instantaneously once she finished singing. From the time I first heard Angelina, way back at her first audition on Norway's Got Talent, she has amazed me.
She is a savant .. a total genius when it comes to jazz and music altogether. She is a huge gift and an addiction .. you'll find she'll manage to touch your soul in an amazing unique way .. welcome! you will have many fans lead you around the song's etc.. (130 or so .. mostly covers and 4 originals .. latest one it's "MILLION MILES* about her grandfather who died a couple of years back and she dedicated it to anyone who's lost a loved one ... beautiful song .. and powerful. ("A Milion Miles Apart" is another cover i love ... )
Yes, her timing is impeccable, as is her pitch, vibrato, vocal fry, rasp, melisma's & her ability to emote is off the charts. But the most amazing thing to me, & what every vocal coach talks about, is her breath control. I swear her lungs must extend into a couple of hollow legs because she can hold a note forever. There are songs where she covers 2-3 lines of lyrics in one breath. I believe when singers start to cover her songs, they will be forced to change the phrasing, otherwise they will run out of air. I like to whistle to her songs & there are several where I run out of air, twice, while she is still holding the note. To see her genius re-arrangement skills, check out what she did to Queen's iconic rock opera, Bohemian Rhapsody. She had to cut it down to less than 3 min for the AGT-Champions show. She turned it into an acoustic jazz ballad that Queen was wowed by. It was so different from the original that she copyrighted it & recorded it on her independent label at the time, Angelina Jordan, Inc. I've listened to music for over 6 decades & I've never seen anything like her before.
Good comment, Keith 👍 And I think those few times she should have run out of breath, are the times when she deliberately puts a more breathy voice into it, like we know she can do. She chooses how much of that breathiness to put into her sound, to decide how long she can hold her lines in one breath. She does that unbelievably well, so naturally, and it all comes from her amazing breath control. She is surely one of a kind, well one of a mankind, I would say 😊
The lung development may have been enhanced by carrying the "Flower Crowns" and flowers which often adorn her hair. The "Flower Crowns" are a cultural element of summer in her native Norway!!!
@@genevapriest6190 I love the one where she sings "Our Day Will Come" where she gives her flower crown to a fan! ua-cam.com/video/nibiT5Px6Yo/v-deo.html
You can almost hear the inner conversation of the musicians when she take the stage - "Hey guys, I think we're gonna have to bring our A-game." "Do you think that's gonna be enough?"
This one will stand as a new benchmark for young singers and go down as one of the most astounding performances from a 9 year old jazz soul singer forever more . I believe she will be taught in music schools in the future .
My fellow Angelina fans have already commented on the story behind this performance, how old she was, etc. I wanted to emphasize on what you said about timing. She really has an innate sense of timing I think it can't be taught. You can see her performance of "I'm a Fool to Want Me" at Norway's Got Talent. Sung a capella. Someone mixed her singing with music and it is insane to listen to. 7 or 8 years old at the time. Also, to sing like she does, she taps into a special well of sensibility and emotion that's totally hers. She has been a master since she was 6 years old. Unbelievable!
It is probably obvious to you now why this is one of her most requested songs. I think this will one day be considered an important piece of music history. The stuff she is doing here, it just can't be learned. This is something that is coming right from her soul. One of the ways you can tell... when you watch that back(and I know you will), take note of just how effortlessly she does it. It's like she's not even _trying_ to sing it in any certain way, she is just singing what feels right... and somehow she understands exactly what "right" is. You have now seen million miles and this one. Those two alone give you a small taste of the kind of variety, versatility, and excellence you have ahead. There are so many more to see that I are going to impress and amaze you. :)
I think it can be learned. I believe it's because of her grandmother. When you constantly expose a child to this they will learn/hear the intricate styles and copy them. Especially if they are pointed out. No different than picking up multiple languages at an early age. Not saying she's not special, but it was her exposure and repeated teachings of techniques while also learning piano and english.... I only got as far as Do-Ri-Me with Julie Andrews.
@@colinhuggins268 Worthwhile? I have trained/evaluated 1000+ students over 30 years. It was also important. Did you find my comments to be offensive? I think Her Grandma is an artist and she's groomed and trained and most importantly exposed Angelina to the beauty of musical legends and why they are legends. Take her amazing voice with her phrasing, couple it with the wisdom of the past iconic singers and you have a passionate young lady, that 1000's listen to daily. I'm thankful my peers/friends exposed me to dozens of artist not normally heard on pop radio in the 60-70's.
She can vary both the frequency and amplitude of her vibrato independently, and can do it in almost any situation (such as the rounded tones mentioned here) - it’s unbelievable the control she has.
I was one of the many commenters who asked you to watch this one. Angelina is nine here, and you’ll see as you watch other videos, her timing is always so perfect that it’s noticeable. She is always right in the pocket. Both jazz and blues are part of Angelina’s DNA. She doesn’t perform that type of music-she just lets it rip, sometimes softly, and sometimes like this which her fans lovingly call Angelina in her beast mode. Since you’re new to Angelina-this was a tribute to Jay Hawkins, and it’s intentionally over-the-top. It’s amazing, but a novelty in Angelina’s catalog. I asked you to review this, but also said that to see Angelina 180 degrees different, watch her cover of Adele’s A Million Years Ago where it’s just Angelina, a mic, and an acoustic guitar. You’ll see and hear an incredibly beautiful voice and two of Angelina’s unique talents. First, she gives us a different take on the original that stuns you into silence so you don’t miss anything. And secondly, you’ll see and hear the best interpreter of lyrics I have ever seen. That’s a big statement, but it proves true across scores of songs. She is a once in a lifetime talent.
Thanks for go back with another fantastic reaction with Angelina. She in this song is stunning, I'm sorry for the destabilizing effect ... but this is Angelina 🤗😜 and this song is a kind of investiture, is the watershed between simple listeners and fans of that girl. Certainly not many adults know Screamin' Jay Hawkins, certainly the only little girl of 9 years in the world who knows him and who also thinks of singing him without any fear is Angelina.❤️ And it's incredible that this adaptation is all her own (the sheets written) and that at that age she was able to evaluate and transform, according to her sensitivity, such a particular and powerful song 😊 How is it possible that a girl of that age can make and sing the most beautiful transposition of this song from 65 years ago ... and it has been sung by many great performers. If you want another extrasensory experience with Angelina (one among many 😊) try "It's A Man's World" - at the Age 12 ua-cam.com/video/HEm7tGrjIKk/v-deo.html
poor selection of ITS A MANS WORLD with that Screeching Clarinet and military band... SURELY you are aware of her July 7 2018 version , three weeks later or so at the KONGSBERG JAZZ FESTIVAL, with a REAL 4 piece JAZZ band, with MUCH superior audio and pace. ua-cam.com/video/meUN_mTpl1I/v-deo.html
@@yousurf374 obviously I agree on the quality of the recording, but the pleasure of viewing Angelina in live compensates for the not excellent quality of the recording and sometimes the reactors show skepticism for not seeing her perform such an unreal interpretation
@@ClaudioMarcucci7756 I hope your pleasure of viewing is not a misguided item. There were many FANS of Jackie Evancho who turned out to be a bit abnormal. Besides, when she has an album/CD, it will be AUDIO, Although I see your point of visual addition of the experience, now that she is older it is not such a shock. She is now a seasoned pro. For me, I am here more for the voice and talent than any visual. I could be blind and recognize those.
I am with Claudio on this one. For all of us who have known of Angelina's abilities for seven plus years there is no need for a live performance - although that is always a bonus - because we can be certain that what we hear is Angelina singing without the benefit (?) of manipulation by sound engineers or any other technical enhancements. However, for a newcomer to Angelina, and there are many newcomer Reactors, an audio only recording could lead them to believe that the performance has been enhanced (?) by technical means, and she is just "another" singer. She is far, far more than that and the Reactors should be exposed to her live performances, so they can understand that she is for "real" and her performances are raw, unedited masterpieces.
@@alberttenfoot a bit confusing on your post.... ua-cam.com/video/meUN_mTpl1I/v-deo.html ??? you do prefer or do not care if it is live versus studio? My post was regarding a live performance at Kongsberg... MUCH better performance. No live visual of her performing is needed to enjoy the vocal majesty she yields in it... and no lousy clarinet blaring over her excellence. ua-cam.com/video/meUN_mTpl1I/v-deo.html
She is front and center because she arranged the entire song including the instruments. You see her writing changes which she gave to the director and he smiles. She is two months into her ninth year when this was produced. Her musicians refer to her affectionately as the boss. You should watch some of her rehearsals as she directs musicians from age eight on. The director in an interview after this production stated she was very polite as she referred to the changes as her wishes. Imagine if you will the musicians talking among themselves, friends and family after leaving the set. How do you explain to another person that you just witnessed history being made and you were part of it, and you basically were told by an eight year old as to how.
Great job at reacting to this Angelina Jordan staple for alot of reactors on here . Do you want to see what else she can do with her voice ?.... React to Eta James song I'd Rather Go Blind. Be prepared to not only be gobsmacked that a 12 year old has such grit and frye in her vocal arsenal but how she makes you believe it could be her original if only Eta didn't beat her to it. ! I look forward to when & if you should follow up on my request, till then take care and be safe. 🖖
My impression: she wouldn't have accepted anything less than a perfect mix. Her musicians affectionately called her "the Boss". Rumor has it she listened to the recording in the studio some 100 times after session. She did an acapella performance of "I'm a fool to want you" on Norways Got Talent at age of 8. Vibrato-wise her winning performance on NGT of "Summertime" might be interesting. Her eye for details goes as deep as adjusting her vibrato to the style appropriate for the era of the song. And yes, pitch perfect, impeccable timing and voice control. Always.
Thanks for the great reaction! You survived this better than most. I think this video has actually triggered episodes of cognitive dissonance is some reviewers. I don't know for a fact, but I believe Angelina doesn't bother with counting to get her timing. She has an innate sense of musicality and timing. One of the first judges in her Norske Talenter (Norway's Got Talent) audition told her, "You ARE music!" The things that impress me most are her interpretation of lyrics and her ability to convey emotion to listeners. Her lyrical interpretations are often very different that the original artist when she does covers. This particular song doesn't really show the emotional facet. For that, you might want to take a look at "A Million Years Ago" - ua-cam.com/video/QHLtZQ3sIwE/v-deo.html As they say, she's been making grown men cry since she was seven years old. ;-)
She is a wonderful creative Artist, look at the pen for writing her ideas at any time. She rearrange the most Cover songs and make it her own. But she told it's easier for her to sing own Songs, than there is no comparison to the original. She is now a wonderful singer-songwriter. she released 4own Songs till today and her new Album with own Songs is comming soon. who write an own Song at 11y and called it: What is Life?? It looks like a programm for her future working. In her Song Million Miles you find the ... memories.. In Shield her social Attention to her nearest people and in Oslo her Magic. She is a wonderful Storyteller and her voice ever the leading Instrument 🥰 A perfect example is the life Version of it's a man's world, a cover of James Brown. A small Girl against a powerful Bigband and she won the "competition". All get on their feets at last for this masterpiece 🤗
You are recognizing Angelina’s extraordinary advanced feel, intuition, and soul. Angelina is hyper sensitive to understanding how to interpret the adult subject matter, emotion and soulfulness of the lyrics at such a young age. She is a genius level talent.
This is one of the greatest musical performances of all time, and it is by a 9 yr old who arranged and styled it herself. Most newcomers will not believe that a child could do all that, but we are talking Angelina here, not Adele or Beyonce, but Angelina Jordan.
Angelina is one of the most addictive singers I have ever listened to, & one of the very few, that can pull you right into the song, making you feel, every word, every note, & every emotion. ❤️💙 I always have this feeling that Angelina is not only channeling some of these late great singers, but that they also pass through her, when she is singing their song ❤️💙 A rare beauty, in every sense of the word ❤️💙 Whether you are a believer in reincarnation or not, I find it very intriguing that Lou Rawls, the American Jazz & blues singer legend, passed away the same day Angelina is born 😊 Loved your reaction, & please keep reacting to Angelina, you will enjoy the ride!!!
DJ - First, I am sorry I am so late getting to this. Today was grocery pick-up, so up early and no time to listen/respond...then the car battery died in the parking lot. A truely fun morning! Anyway, I am so glad you liked the video. After all the requests it would have been a disappointment had you found fault with it. Angelina was astonishing in this track. Your analysis captures exactly what drew me into Angelina's work. That astonishing sense of timing and those rounded notes and vibrato. How about the depth of her tone?? At nine years old?? Just blows me away. You have lots of suggestions in the comments. Now that we got you started, you'll have a hard time staying away from her. Enjoy the ride !!
Nice reaction, some new insight which is always nice to hear. 😊 One one hand, I do agree with another commentor that, yes, there are many different aspects of her vocals that are amazing. One the other hand, to me, her timing is one that often grabs my attention (maybe as a former drummer, but to me it’s just about musicality), at least on the technical front. It is something that requires years of practice or simply an innate feel. She hadn’t been alive long enough for the years of practice alone to give her this ability, so this is (part of) her natural gift shining through. So I completely agree with you that her timing is mind boggling, especially at (barely) 9 years of age. It sort of parallels what she can do melodically (not seen as much here as in other songs) - to dance around the basic melody/rhythm while always staying in touch with it and never straying too far off base (as so many singers these days seem to do, especially with covers since it’s the only way they know to “make it their own). It’s interesting that my favourite example of her creative phrasing in that song is the exact 2 line section where you paused: “I don’t care if you don’t want me. I’m yours right now”. Those two phrases were driving me crazy so I used Final Cut Pro to tap out the 6/8ths time on one layer and what she actually sang on another layer to dissect her timing. 😂 So that’s 12 syllables; eight for the first line and four for the second. Five of the first eight fall on the offbeat which of course for 6/8 means off by a 16th note. That alone ups the ante. One of the others is on an upbeat, meaning 6 of 8 syllables are syncopated, with a couple of down beats thrown in to create more tension. Maybe more impressively, the words “if you don’t want me“ constitute five syllables that she distributes across 3 8th notes. I think it’s that short section which gives these two lines their impact, not just in terms of timing but on the emotional level. You can hear that she really accentuates those words. It’s almost like she’s interrupting the person she’s speaking to and accelerates her vocal pace in that moment to defiantly emphasize her point. Nothing is repeated or regular within those two lines, but it all works perfectly. The first three of the following four syllables (“I’m yours right now) do fall on 8th notes but they almost feel syncopated, juxtaposed with the chaos of the preceding line. When I was tapping out the rhythm, I wanted the syllable “I’m” to fall on the offbeat. But it doesn’t. More timing trickery. Partly caused by the fact that the second line begins not at the start of a new bar but five notes in to the same bar in which the preceding line ended. 🤔 And then just when you get used to the rhythm actually coinciding with the 6/8 time, the last word “now” once again falls on the 16th note when it could just as easily (but less interestingly) have fallen on the following downbeat. That whole thing is a complex timing sequence and it’s obvious when she is singing it that she is focusing, as always, on the emotion of the song and technical details like that just flow intuitively and effortlessly. Despite being awe of her timing, especially at such a young age, I do feel like the thing that defines Angelina’s vocals more than anything else is their ability to connect with the audience, to connect with the song and to deliver the meeting in the motion of the song in a powerful way. But she couldn’t do that without these technical skills which give her a toolbox to work from that few other vocalists, of any age, have.
Great reaction to 9 years old Angelina's outstanding tribute to the song's author the very peculiar Screamin' Jay Hawkins! Looking forward to your next reaction to her!
She has an innate sense of music. She doesn't rush songs (unless the musicians do). She sings in tune, even when a Capella ("I'm a Fool To Want You" at age 7). She feels the meaning and mood of the song and can express it so the listener feels it too ("Wicked Game"). She can sing quietly, (again "Wicked Game") or belt it out with "Feeling Good" or "It's a Man's World". She is comfortable in front of large audiences.
If you haven't already listen to ALL her performances on Norway's Got Talent she was 7 at the start of the show and turned 8 before she won the competition. I'm a Fool to Want you, Gloomy Sunday, Summertime, Bang Bang all mind blowing performances.
It seems she got all these singing skills from the time she was born and she doesn't have to work very hard to learn anything and I believe she can be the best singer of twentyfirs century like Freddy mercury who was the best in the last century to me great reaction 🙏🙏👍👍💙💙
Check out Someone like you-- (Adele cover) or Stay-- (Rhianna cover)‐- or Natural Woman -- (Aretha Franklin tribute) or if you want to compare her range-- I have nothing- (Whitney Houston tribute--high range)--and A million years ago ( Adele cover-- low range)-- you'll love Everything she does!!!
Angelina has so many good songs, a couple of my favorites are "Feeling Good" there are two and both are great I think she is 10 on both of them and She does a cover of Adelle song at 11 "A Million Years Ago"
She actually has eight (or maybe eight and a half) versions of "Feeling Good" and they're all terrific. Well, one may not be terrific because she's rehearsing and working out how she wants to do it, while also playing the keyboard, but it's still interesting. The half would be the one she did for Avicii's worldwide Volvo campaign because the vocals aren't all her. Keep going back in time. She doesn't get less impressive. (Well, OK… I guess that depends on your perspective and preferences.) As others have already pointed out, she was 9 here. Go back to when she was 8½ and had just won _Norway's Got Talent_ [Norske Talenter]: ua-cam.com/video/ZSfgCIGd7k4/v-deo.html This is her doing Dinah Washington's "What a Difference a Day Makes" in the middle of a huge crowd, with a live band and backup singers. It wasn't the first "concert" appearance she did after winning the show, but it was a very early one, anyway - and it's definitely the first time she was "hanging out" in the midst of the audience like this (as opposed to being "safely ensconced" on stage with the band). It also came at the end of a long day, including rehearsals, a TV interview, and finally the live performance very late in the afternoon, as the sun was going down (it was 2014-07-02, BTW - broadcast the next day). So, did any of that phase her? Not at all. She sings the song like she taught it to Dinah. [wink] At some point, you should also do her 4 performances that won her NGT. (It wasn't just the final performance that won it for her: she was pretty much a strong favorite of the judges and the audience through the whole competition, starting with her audition which went viral online and brought her worldwide media attention before she even sang in the live semifinals [the 2 rounds before that were prerecorded].) The 4 performances simply _must_ be reacted to in order, all in a row (but not necessarily in one reaction video), so you can trace her incredible development in the span of almost exacty 6 months. Here are the best versions of the NGT performances IMO (including relevant pre- and post-song stuff for additional context - even if you don't include that in your reaction, you should see it): * ua-cam.com/video/d3gSho9yf88/v-deo.html audition at age 7 (almost 8), singing Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" over an instrumental track (BTW, the artist names I'm giving are the versions that Angelina is basing hers on, not the songwriters or the first artists to record the songs) * ua-cam.com/video/LXknLZDoRVQ/v-deo.html second round (just turned 8), singing Billie's "I'm a Fool to Want You" a cappella * ua-cam.com/video/HCaDyiqs7Wg/v-deo.html live semifinal round, singing Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)", accompanied by solo electric guitar (in this case, there's a separate video for the judges' post-song comments ua-cam.com/video/pcBoB49Gxn8/v-deo.html [starting where the other video left off - turn on UA-cam's "CC" captions] because it's in the wrong aspect ratio [16:9 squeezed into 4:3], and I wouldn't want to subject you or your viewers to that for the performance itself) * ua-cam.com/video/nsBfBuc9d9I/v-deo.html live final found, singing Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong's "Summertime", over a backing track but with a live trumpet player (pre- and post-song stuff also captioned) Then at some point, you can go even farther back to when she was 6 and 7, recording vocals in a modest studio as part of an afterschool music/arts program (this is when she "starts to" sound like a child singer, BTW). Unfortunately, we don't know the proper order of these videos. (Not linking to them because you already have enough to keep you reacting for a long while, before you think about delving into this really old stuff. For "completeness", I guess I should point out here - even though someone's surely already told you - our "embarrassment of riches" from this wunderkind even includes the [apparently] first time she was ever caught on video singing: doing a very respectable rendition of the title line of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" at age 18 months - and _feeling_ it. [!!] Again, not linking to it. You'll see it eventually, assuming you keep reacting to her.)
You want vocal fry from Angelina? Go for her cover of Etta James "I'd Rather Go Blind" ua-cam.com/video/pK8mMXQb3_I/v-deo.html It's a masterpiece. She's a legend growing up right before our eyes. Here for your Angelina journey. It's one of the most soul-satisfying experiences you can have.
Hi Kenny - you picked up on one of Angelina's magic touches; she adjusts to the song and the era so well. She treats a ballad from the 40's totally different than a jazz song of the same era. When she does Adel, she adjusts to that just as well. She seems to just get it right for every flavor of song she takes on. Fascinating isn't it?
And then when you want to hear what Angelina should be striving for. Listen to Beth Hart's cover of this song. "Beth & Joe - I'd Rather Go Blind - Live in Amsterdam" I absolutely love what AJ is accomplishing at her age. There are only two ladies that make my face leak. And these two are the ones. Some day I expect AJ to surpass Beth. but it is my opinion AJ needs some maturity to surpass Beth.
As much love for this as you my friend. Could be even more. To me this is like the 8 wonder of the world. Deffinitively among the worlds seven wonders in the world of music. I still, after well over 4 years struggel to belive this performance. I HAVE enjoyed it quite a few hundred times though. I am sure it will follow me for the rest of my life, as Angelina`s music i general will. I asure you, as a new subscriber I will follow you on in the journey you are about to take, into the Angelina Jordan stratosphere. To go forward you could seek out her performances at the NGT ("Norwegian Talents") in 2014 (7 and 8 years old) and in the AGT-Champions in 2020. By the way; Angelina turn 15 YO at January 10th. Got us a surprice??? :-D
For those who ask; - Stratosphere: the part of the earth's atmosphere which extends from the top of the troposphere to about 30 miles (50 kilometers) above the surface and in which temperature increases gradually to about 32° F (0° C) and clouds rarely form. As Angelina makes music, temteratures sure rise, even in the hights of music.
I appreciate your knowledgeable reaction to one of my favorite Angelina songs, (but that's like having a favorite child). In my 62 years of listening to and enjoying just about every genre of music, Angelina's voice, control, emotional projection just pierces me to my DNA. The enjoyment I get from listening to ALL her songs whether they are 130+ covers or or her 4 originals are mare than I get from blues, music. And I thought nothing could be better than that. You have a new subscriber and I look forward to more reactions to her songs. My request would be to react to either "Summertime, / KORK", or "It's a Man's World - Angelina Jordan and Forsvarets Stabsmusikkorps. Although you can't go wrong with any of her songs.
I found the cutest video of Angelina doing a rehearsal to Summertime it is hilarious she wants the guy playing the horn to play it higher so she mimics the horn sound and gesturing so that he will play the horn notes higher! Think you will get a kick out of that. I found a video where she’s backstage with Quincy Jones for his 85th birthday and she sings a cappella to him it’s just really beautiful and there’s also another video where she’s rehearsing with the orchestra singing fly me to the moon for the 85th birthday of Quincy Jones
Great comments TMA. This one well deserved to be the most watched but, if you want to be thoroughly impressed then go back to Her Norway's Got Talent, all performances age 7-8 and you will see why Angelina has millions and millions of followers. Just mind blowing. Look forward to more of your Angelina reactions.
Your reaction video was amazing, i agree with all that this will be one that will always be one to watch. as always there are no words for this barefoot princess great job keep them coming.
From my knowledge, Angelina was nine years old in this video. I don't think she counts, I think she just knows, innately. There are so many videos of her singing with only a guitar or minimal instrumentation. Also she rearranges so many songs, by changing the time. While I recommended Bohemian Rhapsody, and California Dreaming on your first video, for timing I'd recommend Wicked Games. Just her, a piano, a mic, and video camera. Hear is a fan made video, I like this one because it shows her actually playing the piano. What she does with the timing and spacing. As the saying goes Wait For It. ua-cam.com/video/5IAMF4FDfw4/v-deo.html
Yeah… there are many "rock-solid" aspects to her singing - "metronomical" timing is not among them. [grin] Instead, she uses what might be called "affective timing", which can warp in the presence of emotions, like the spacetime around a massive object. [grin]
@@alberttenfoot Hey Albert,I'm dissapointed that the only thing you had to say about the video with the american shaman,is that it was interesting, and after my discussion of certain element in that video,no comment, just silence from you.As the superfan of Angelina that I know you is,I thought that something in that video would be worth a comment, and therefore did I search for the video ,just to give you the information that I thought would be of some importance for a superfan like you.
Glad you got back to Angelina so quickly. Thanks. I like your enthusiasm. This performance is top 5 Angelina for me. But understand how arbitrary that is since I actually have 80-90 favorites. You have other suggestions that are top tier for me as well. Bohemian Rhapsody at America's Got Talent is exceptional . I'd Rather Go Blind is EttaJames good with even more fry. Smooth jazz that's Ella good is Every Time We Say Goodbye. Also her original What is Life is sweet and smoooth. All of Norway's Got Talent is great. I love Summertime at age 8. As good as anyone. Feeling Good age 10 shows that age is our issue not hers. So many, so good. Hope you dive in. Happy New Year!
Angelina is the full package - fearlessness, vocal ability, musical IQ, work ethic, story-telling, timing, artistry, showmanship, emotive capability, and on and on.
Thanks for you musical insights,it's often said that Angelina's musicality is off the charts. It's a Man's World live in concert would probably fascinate you.
Your the first reactor I have seen that has commented on her timing. It's like she has a natural sense of rhythm as well as pitch and the vocal ability to put it all together. She's a complete package and still so young.
Thanks, Temple - she is an incredibly self-possessed musician - you may have noticed the beginning - where she is giving HER notes to the music director.. lol
I wonder if her 'odd vibrato' is due to her non-English-language origins. Norwegian is her native language but there is a small video-clip of her singing in English at age one and a half. Yeah. No kidding. Then there's Farsi and Japanese around her, too. One can only wonder how non-English speaking can change singing 'shapes' or offers different resources.
Your presentation sir, is awesome! The quality of the music presented is perfect. I appreciate it. I listen to a lot of reactions and I cannot stand low quality presentation of an artist work, so thank you!
Suspicious Minds needs to be next. She’s able to bring out emotions every time I hear her sing. The most appropriate term I’ve heard for that ability is called “Duende”. Unfortunately, I don’t believe that ability will ever be able to be explained or analyzed with any meaning as to how or why. That’s why I can honestly say that she is the best I’ve heard in my 61 years.
Angelina is a legend already. A couple of singers if you would like to react on... Linda Ronstadt, Joss Stone, Amy Lee, Diana Ankudinova, and Sara Barielles. All amazing talents Excellent review by the way.
She had just turned nine when this was recorded. The notations that she made at the beginning, and read by the director, are her own arrangements of notes and how she wants them played. They are called her 'wishes' even though the crew knows that she is the boss, and will correct you if you don't play it to her liking.
Love your reaction !! Angelina has a Goddess like voice. One thing i would love to see and hear is reactions from the original judges from Norway's got talent. I know they totally adored her and recognized her talent right from the start but it would be awesome to hear from them about this video. Personally, for her age, I think its the best vocals video i have ever seen. I just adore her!!!
ES MUY INCREÍBLE....GUAUUUUUU GUAUUUUUU QUE ES MUY PEQUEÑA PARA SEMEJANTE INTERPRETACION....MARAVILLOSA..FELICIDADES ANGELINA TIENES UN TALENTO GRANDIOSO 😇👣😁💯💯💢🥰🥰❤❤❤❤
You get a new sub, man, thanks to your appreciation and comments!🤗 Insane by a 9yo child, such control, inspiration with no self-censorship on her interpretation as she feels it. That was my Angelina's encounter of the third type 2,5 years ago! 😍 Don't forget to react to videos I posted in your Million Miles reaction and "Get to know us" 😉
An awesome performance for a nine-year-old to sing in the recording booth like she is totally grown-up. Angelinas rendition of this song is totally amazing and I think your reaction confirms this opinion. I have listened to lots of Angelinas songs and I am always totally shocked by the way she transforms any other artist songs to her own style. Angelena is truly a phenomenal artist and has a large genuine fan base. Thank you for a great reaction
You are the only person I've heard remark on her sense of time. You are right: ⁶/⁸ time is damned hard to stay on top of, especially as a vocalist in the studio, while riffing.
I believe she's between 9 and 10. Sweet story about her performing barefoot. Also, do check out her very first audition on Norway's Got Talent (Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday.")
Can I recommend How Great Thou Art, Wicked Game, Mr Lonely, Young and Beautiful, California Dreamin?..just a few mind boggling good covers from AJ..enjoy and happy new year ))
----- @Temple Music Academy ----- - Since you mentioned how amazed you were, especially by her sense of timing... I would highly recommend that you check out her performance of the song "I'm a fool to want you" on "Norway got talent(Norske Talenter)" in 2014. My jaw hit the floor so hard it registered on the Richter scale... -----
Great reaction! It is so rewarding to hear musicians commenting on the nuances of Angelina’s performances that are not easy for others to pick up. Regarding her sense of time: There is a live performance of Angelina with her band at a jazz festival when she is 10. The song is «Feeling Good» and also in a 6/8 time signature. The drummer makes a mistake and goes one bar too far. Angelina simply gives him a sideway glance, obviously noticing that HE lost his sense of time, waits him out, and starts her huge crescendo without missing a beat...only one bar later. It is so professionaly done that very few in the audience will have noticed. I have played with experienced singers who get flummoxed even if this happens in 4/4... That said, although I am sure Angelina is capable of counting (in the musical sense!), I don’t think she depends on it except sometimes early in the rehersal process. When she performs, she plays with time just as she does with pitch and dynamics. Which is to say expertly, adding colour and texture to even the simplest melody lines.
Let’s analyze the video:
1st you see how small and cute she is.
2nd you see she is barefoot (story below)
3rd You see her making her “list of suggested changes” to the song.
Thanks, she is barly 9 years old in this performance.
She ends the song a cappella, wonderful.
("A Milion Miles Apart" is another cover i love ... )
Patricia "Million Miles" is a tribute to her maternal grandfather who passed in November 2019.
Old school jazz from an old soul 9 year old. The band also was killing it.
I have watched her sing this song in different videos at least 40 times. She is just sooo vocally captivating.
Nobody of this age should be able to convey this sort of emotion. She's not only technically great, but...she gets ya in the feels every time.
Halleluja for Angelina Jordan and people like you....
Keith 6:04 - 6:19 one breath!
You can almost hear the inner conversation of the musicians when she take the stage - "Hey guys, I think we're gonna have to bring our A-game." "Do you think that's gonna be enough?"
You don't know yet that Angelina is the best singer you have ever heard, but you will :-)
Truth today's or yesterdays she trumps them all she is 9
I'd put Ronnie James Dio above her but...I'd put Dio above most people, she's definitely impressive and a musical prodigy
9 years and 2 months old. A year after winning Norway's Got Talent, with a band that formed around her.
I m with you Rusty. This one will always be one of her signature for life and will be remembered for very very long time...
lmao rusty beat all of us to these reactions! hes in every comment section i look at haha
@@jackpearson1110 I'm waiting for your equivalent performance, or rather, anything important or worthwhile.
Variable speed vibrato. Angelina takes the rulebook for singing and chucks it out the window.
I think she IS the rule book now.
She can vary both the frequency and amplitude of her vibrato independently, and can do it in almost any situation (such as the rounded tones mentioned here) - it’s unbelievable the control she has.
But then retrieves the rulebook and rewrites it as the Angelina Edition!
Angelina's breath control is fantastic!

@@alberttenfoot a bit confusing on your post....
ua-cam.com/video/meUN_mTpl1I/v-deo.html
??? you do prefer or do not care if it is live versus studio? My post was regarding a live performance at Kongsberg... MUCH better performance. No live visual of her performing is needed to enjoy the vocal majesty she yields in it... and no lousy clarinet blaring over her excellence.
ua-cam.com/video/meUN_mTpl1I/v-deo.html
She has her arrangement (wishes as she wants to call it.) reading by the band leader at the start of the video.
I'm glad that you like this.
One of the first judges in her Norske Talenter (Norway's Got Talent) audition told her, "You ARE music!"
The things that impress me most are her interpretation of lyrics and her ability to convey emotion to listeners. Her lyrical interpretations are often very different that the original artist when she does covers. This particular song doesn't really show the emotional facet. For that, you might want to take a look at "A Million Years Ago" - ua-cam.com/video/QHLtZQ3sIwE/v-deo.html
As they say, she's been making grown men cry since she was seven years old. ;-)
Well Roger will be pleased he got what he wanted lol , great reaction for an amazing great little lady roll on the next one xxx
Thanks Heather....I am very pleased !!
She is a wonderful Storyteller and her voice ever the leading Instrument 🥰
A perfect example is the life Version of it's a man's world, a cover of James Brown.
She is a genius level talent.
agree! Angelina's timing is perfect. Even when she won Norway's got Talent when she was 7 years old.
Fernando She was 8 when she won.
Awesome reaction to our Angelina!👍🏼🤗🎼
Enjoyed your reaction ..thumbs up
Love your comment about 6/8. COMPLETELY true. Great reaction.
Great reaction to 9 years old Angelina's outstanding tribute to the song's author the very peculiar Screamin' Jay Hawkins!
Looking forward to your next reaction to her!
Thank you so much for reacting to the most amazing performance I have ever seen 🤩🤩❤️❤️
She had fun, clearly. And controlled it all.
Did you catch near the end where she was reading the music. She can sing and read music and alter it on the fly. Amazing
Angelina is a beast dressed as a little girl. Really enjoyed your perspective, I'll be tuned in for more.
gotta hear her beginnings on live Norway Got Talent at 7 yrs old singin Gloomy Sunday...Bang Bang...Summertime!
Here's a list and you can pick your own favorite:

I have been following Angelina for 7 years now and I have my no more were to describe her talent.
The only I can say is In my opinion Angelina will go down as the greatest singer of the 21 century
Great Reaction Stay Safe 😀
[wink]
At some point, you should also do her 4 performances that won her NGT.
Here are the best versions of the NGT performances IMO (including relevant pre- and post-song stuff for additional context - even if you don't include that in your reaction, you should see it):
* ua-cam.com/video/d3gSho9yf88/v-deo.html audition at age 7 (almost 8), singing Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" over an instrumental track (BTW, the artist names I'm giving are the versions that Angelina is basing hers on, not the songwriters or the first artists to record the songs)
* ua-cam.com/video/LXknLZDoRVQ/v-deo.html second round (just turned 8), singing Billie's "I'm a Fool to Want You" a cappella
* ua-cam.com/video/HCaDyiqs7Wg/v-deo.html live semifinal round, singing Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)", accompanied by solo electric guitar (in this case, there's a separate video for the judges' post-song comments ua-cam.com/video/pcBoB49Gxn8/v-deo.html [starting where the other video left off - turn on UA-cam's "CC" captions] because it's in the wrong aspect ratio [16:9 squeezed into 4:3], and I wouldn't want to subject you or your viewers to that for the performance itself)
* ua-cam.com/video/nsBfBuc9d9I/v-deo.html live final found, singing Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong's "Summertime", over a backing track but with a live trumpet player (pre- and post-song stuff also captioned)
Then at some point, you can go even farther back to when she was 6 and 7, recording vocals in a modest studio as part of an afterschool music/arts program (this is when she "starts to" sound like a child singer, BTW).
I agree.
And please compare with the movie wersion Beyonce sings the same song.
I prefer to call it FELINE FRY in that performance, and one other.
"Beth & Joe - I'd Rather Go Blind - Live in Amsterdam"
I absolutely love what AJ is accomplishing at her age. There are only two ladies that make my face leak.
And these two are the ones. Some day I expect AJ to surpass Beth. but it is my opinion AJ needs some maturity to surpass Beth.
HER GIVING RESPECT TO HER BAND BY HEY WATS UP? THEY USED TO DO THAT WAY BACK IN THE DAY!!!
I found a video where she’s backstage with Quincy Jones for his 85th birthday and she sings a cappella to him it’s just really beautiful and there’s also another video where she’s rehearsing with the orchestra singing fly me to the moon for the 85th birthday of Quincy Jones
sue Just a suggestion: If you're going to recommend specific videos, it would be helpful to provide a link.
[grin]
@@DonaldLancon O.K. consider these two phrases" "emotional silences" and "regnant pauses"
@@alberttenfoot She sings silences
@@stefanopratola6314 Indeed, she does and those "silences" tear at the heartstrings of her listeners.
She is awesome singer for a teenager. She is also giving vibes of Amy Winehouse.
Your the first reactor I have seen that has commented on her timing. It's like she has a natural sense of rhythm as well as pitch and the vocal ability to put it all together. She's a complete package and still so young.
Thanks, Temple - she is an incredibly self-possessed musician - you may have noticed the beginning - where she is giving HER notes to the music director.. lol
Great review on this man. She's a superstar :)
She seems to feel the music so deeply, hope she never loses that
Your presentation sir, is awesome! The quality of the music presented is perfect. I appreciate it. I listen to a lot of reactions and I cannot stand low quality presentation of an artist work, so thank you!
You are the first review that mentions her amazing timing. I agree. To come in on the upbeat too is something.
As Yves Harms mentioned. Check out her Acapella version of "Im a fool to want you" At her audition, it will blow your soxs off.
She started composing & changing music
Angelina is a legend already. A couple of singers if you would like to react on...
Linda Ronstadt, Joss Stone, Amy Lee, Diana Ankudinova, and Sara Barielles. All amazing talents
Excellent review by the way.
I'm not crying, you're crying!
She had just turned nine when this was recorded. The notations that she made at the beginning, and read by the director, are her own arrangements of notes and how she wants them played. They are called her 'wishes' even though the crew knows that she is the boss, and will correct you if you don't play it to her liking.
Her first intro to the studio was when she was 6years doing I Have Nothing. She was impressive then she reads the lyrics as she sings
You get a new sub, man, thanks to your appreciation and comments!🤗
Insane by a 9yo child, such control, inspiration with no self-censorship on her interpretation as she feels it. That was my Angelina's encounter of the third type 2,5 years ago! 😍
Don't forget to react to videos I posted in your Million Miles reaction and "Get to know us" 😉
Million Miles ... studio performance .. she's the bright light this planet needs right now .. she is amazing.
Somewhere on you tube you can find her correcting the music teacher in PRESCHOOL!
For your own pleasure, check out her live stage performance of it about a year later.
I believe she's between 9 and 10. Sweet story about her performing barefoot. Also, do check out her very first audition on Norway's Got Talent (Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday.")
Great reaction to an amazing performance!
Can I recommend How Great Thou Art, Wicked Game, Mr Lonely, Young and Beautiful, California Dreamin?..just a few mind boggling good covers from AJ..enjoy and happy new year ))
Do you notice that first growl/scream cements her vocal into the low register and she gets stronger as she goes. Makes it her home base there.
Very good reaction one of the best
as usual Angelina was brillant. you need to hear Back to Black by Amy Whinehouse. Angelina changes alot of the words but it is marvelous, darling!!!!
Great reaction, you should check out (It's a man's world ) with the Norwegian Orchestra.
That's a good one. Although it's actually the same Concert Band (no strings) that she recorded her first album (It's Magic) with.

- Since you mentioned how amazed you were, especially by her sense of timing...
I would highly recommend that you check out her performance of the song "I'm a fool to want you" on "Norway got talent(Norske Talenter)" in 2014.
My jaw hit the floor so hard it registered on the Richter scale...

Sir I am with you again, because of AJ. Your expertise is great thank you. Stay save and healthy. Greetings from Germany
Welcome to the AJ party and I look forward to your journey.
