Hey, I have my art high school entrance exam tomorrow. I watched many videos of others drawing still life and learning the shades and tones as much as I could, even after 4 years of learning art in middle school. This art high school will pick out 16 students based on the exam, to teach them further. If I get into this high school, I will be extremely happy, and I am confident I will.. I know I can do it. I will be moving out and living with my brother in college in another city where this school is. Please guys, wish me the biggest luck on the exam, and thank you Jess and many others for helping me learn more and improving me. I promise, I will make it!
You've become my favourite art youtuber. I love your simplicity of explaining things. You are not only great artist but also a great teacher! Thanks! This is exactly my level of learning :)
Yay! I get so excited when I see you have new uploads. This is actually something I am learning and it came at the perfect time. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
@@artofjesskarp really helpful video for the beginner like me will definitely be trying out these exercises and see how I improve in my drawings thank you so much for sharing such a detailed video on the shading process loved it lots of love from India Mumbai 🥰❤️😍
Your videos have helped me a lot! I tried your tip from one of your videos to draw objects live in which you sketched your mike. This really helped me a lot. Thank you so much Jess please keep making videos ☺️❤️
i just got a fascination with drawing hands but shading and knowing about highlight and shadows scare me so i'm really glad for this video!!! thank u jess! you are my favorite artist here on youtube💓
I just found this video on recommendation...I have seen so many art channels on utube but i think this is the only one gives so many tips and tricks...thank you for sharing these tips
Changing the distance I hold my pencil from the tip changes a lot, shading is hard for me because I always hold my pencil too close to the tip, this has been very helpful, you’ve got a like!
Thanks Jess. I've only very recently started learning to draw and paint and I absolutely love it! Your tips on shading-practice as a warm up for my drawing have really improved my work. Thanks a lot!
@@artofjesskarp Thank you very much Jess. Your channel is great and your tips and advice are really helpful. I absolutely love your Fruit-Heads series too! It's such an amazing idea and they've all got so much personality, My favourite is the Cherry-Twins! It's such a cool and original idea and brilliantly executed too, they're fantastic!
Great lesson Tho i have an issue with your core shadow on the final work i dont know if its just the camera or its just not there and the bounce light kinda went too sharp it looked like a rim light
@@artofjesskarp it definitely is helpful ❤️❤️ .. In one of ur recent vedios u painted a hibiscus.. it was beautiful and it inspired me to paint some flowers and if found it relaxing painting them... Love you Jess❤️
Hopefully you see this to answer. In regards to shading the background do you go dark then light as you get further away from the subject which makes it pop? Cause sometimes I jsut shade and I don’t really see a huge difference in mine. But yours is so good
I have no talent in drawing. I'm trying to learn making portraits for therapy. Because I can't draw, I bought a light pad so that I can trace the outlines and shade afterwards. This way at least I can learn to shade and have a finished picture more ore less like the reference! I will try to learn from your videos. Thank you!
You are best i will try this and learning how to sade better as i always struggling with shading thank youvare best helper ever ☺now i can inpress my friends at school as i am only 16 years old
This video is amazing for beginners. I've been looking for a decent shading video yet couldn't find one. Your video helped me a lot. It's starts from the basic principles . I appreciate it a lot.
This is a video of what it should look like, not how to do it, that’s one of the problems with UA-cam tutorials, youtubers just repeat each other like a different voice is going to make a difference, there’s nothing uniquely helpful. This is one of the better tutorials though so cudos for this.
Lol if you didn’t learn HOW to shade from this video than maybe you’re beyond teaching. you just don’t understand shading. And that’s okay. but don’t be mad at her that you didn’t learn how to do something while she literally showed us step by step how she shades and how she figured out her reference points
Well to twist that, you got "I didn’t learn how to shade" from "the problem is youtubers just copy each other" ? ....... I think it’s you who is beyond help, I even gave her Cudos for the way she did it, I can already shade, I’m checking other peoples work as any good artist would 😂🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ next time you feel like Simping, at least read the comment and try to make sense 👍🏻
Hi Jessica! I agree with @Anna Wolkiewicz. You are both such a great artist and I love, love LOVE how you share. I'm understanding much better things that I've been hearing for a while. Thank you so much and please, keep sharing!
Hey Jess I’m confused you said you shared in one direction but towards the end on the cube drawing you said you use cross hatching are you still shading in one direction or going a completely different direction?

Yes, the darker values you place next to lighter values will create a higher contrast and make them pop!
