I loved dungeon siege 2 it was so unique! I loved the mechanics of the game and the number of spells and weapons and styles you could adopt while playing the game. I loved the sound and aesthetics and the levels were amazingly beautifully crafted. The story was also very interesting, the fact that there even was one a quite deep one in fact. I really loved the game.
I loved to customize the tank character to absorb as much damage as possible and my wizard was sort of a glass cannon while the ranger was sort of rogue. Hell I don't even remember correctly but definitely I put a lot of emphasis on the tank/melee character
i never really played dungeon siege, but when i was younger (7-12) my dad was pretty obsessed with the game. i have good memories sitting next to my dad while he grinded the game and would get excited when he upgraded his gear. i later gave the game a try after my dad beat it and quit. i played the game for around 2 months or so and thought i had surpassed my dads account. i logged into my dads account to compare, and to my surprise my dad was on a whole other league XD.
hearing that theme takes me back to being 7 years old and i would play this game with my step brother at the time. this, age of mythology, black & white... ahh the nostalgia
I absolutely loved DS 1 and 2. The party system with unique classes and the mules! I enjoyed the art work (when i first came to the winter areas with 3D snowfall it blew me away and it actually gave you a sense of it being cold) and what really enjoyed about 2 was how certain quests required you to travel between chapters to complete.
I miss simple stories and games like this.. The mystery of the story and the desire to discover more of the world is something that might not ever be captured in one game ever again. This game will forever be the reason fantasy is my favorite genre.
Even just seeing screencaps of Dungeon Siege 3 infuriated me to no end. I can't believe that's what the series turned into. It's a shame the series couldn't continue (from 1 and 2) since it had a distinctive feel that was thoroughly enjoyable. It was never in the same league as others of its genre, but it was still loads of fun and had a lot of innovation. I miss those days!
People (apparently in this video) were criticizing the lack of story in a hack and slash RPG? That sounds ridiculous. It's not like the genre was ever really known for good story telling. Diablo was certainly light on story too. And controlling the party took a little more effort than what people were criticizing. They must've been playing in a low difficulty setting. Any hack and slash is easy mode and little effort in lower difficulties. Also, sounds like Obsidian didn't have much respect for the franchise, and they decided to create something that was not actually Dungeon Siege. A shame.
Dungeon Siege was a great linear hack and slash... a classic dungeon crawl where the completion of one dungeon lead directly to a different one. Every dungeon had a clearly defined objective. Each Dungeon had different enemies inhabiting it. You could choose to train in 1 of 4 skills, or even all of them if you desired. Dungeon Siege II took the characteristics of the first game and added to it. Along with the hack and slash dungeon crawl, they added RPG elements. They added more character customization, classes, hero abilities, crafting of gear, player races, and pets. They added a ton of side quests; some of them were character specific. Then Broken World was launched. That added two new NPCs, four more pets, and more weapons and armour, with two new classes. There were hundreds of combinations you could create a party around. Dungeon Siege III took out all the characteristics that made Dungeon Siege Dungeon Siege. It became a story driven hack and slash Diablo clone. At character creation... oh wait, that was removed. In its place you had character selection. You had a choice of the Knight, the Archer, the Wizard, and the Fire Elemental/Angel hybrid. Okay, that's weird. Why did they remove Combat Magic, Nature Magic, Melee and Ranged skills? They were the defining element to Dungeon Siege which made it unique. When you level up, you get to select a character skill and there were only a limited number of skills you could choose. On top of that, your entire party can only have two active heroes, so it is your character and one other. Not even a full fledged adventuring group. All gear was locked by character, you couldn't even exchange rings/amulets with the other characters. Dungeon Siege III had a great story, but they fucked up when they made the Fire Elemental/Angel hybrid the plot important character. The other three serve no purpose other than get the Fire Elemental/Angel hybrid to the final challenge. This contradicts all the other two games... where the player is the plot important character. Finally, the quests/missions... the first act of the first chapter was getting the party together. After that it was to rescue the queen and/ore liberate the capital city. Then confront the Rebel Queen. There were less than a dozen side quests. I completed the game in just over 12 hours. There was no increasing difficulty as there was in Dungeon Siege II. There was no point in playing the game since the story was the same. There was no point in playing as a different character as the Fire Elemental/Angel Hybrid is the only one which mattered. There wasn't enough play variation. I bought Dungeon Siege II Broken World for 80 dollars and I have spent hundreds of hours playing the game finding the secret and hidden locations, the Easter Eggs. I bought Dungeon Siege for 20 dollars and I spent around 100 hundred hours playing it. They were worth my money. Dungeon Siege III, I bought for 60 dollars and I played it for just over 18 hours (I deleted my first play through when I made a mistake which prevented me from defeating a boss... who knew that only having 2 heroes available would make boss fights too challenging when the heroes are under leveled and you choose the wrong hero abilities.)
@@aralornwolf3140 Great summary of what made Dungeon Siege I & II so great, and what made Dungeon Siege III so weak. I really respect the developers at Obsidian and love most of their games, so I know there are a lot of extremely talented and creative game developers there, which leads me to believe that the publisher of DS3 forced Obsidian to make a lot of hard decisions by seriously reducing the development budget and probably actively interfering with the core gameplay systems, mechanics, features, length, and to simplify the gameplay substantially.
I liked DS3 still, though yes I've never played the original games. I've played it 3 times playing 3 different characters. First time I did not finish because I didn't like playing as Anjali (fire elemental/angel lady). 2nd time I did finish using the knight/warrior guy & 3rd time I'm in the middle of using the gunner half-witch. But yes Anjali was the partner for both of those but only because I like her abilities, just not for playing as her.
Put a lot of time into the the original and LoA when I was younger, still come back to it again every year or so. The soundtrack + seemingly endless world was great for a young mind. A nice and simple game, its soundtrack does not get enough love.
I still remember it with so much warmth. The most vivid memory is from the goblin mines and the whole sudden miniguns and flamethrowers not only in a fantasy world but in the hands of your party members. My god, how insanely fun that was, shooting fantasy creatures with 4 miniguns and a couple of flamethrowers >:D
Oh yeah, His dungeon video made me want to play so bad that I bought the game for like 0.79 cents on Steam. Sadly it didn't work that well with Windows 10, Probably because I was trying to run it at 2560x1440.

I was quite fond of DS and DS2 back in the day. The Dungeon Siege series had it's problems like the very simple writing. Still, it was a very fun ARPG.
"I wanted more Dungeon Siege... and whatever this is, (DS3) is NOT Dungeon Siege" ...Ross Scott, 2015. GearBox should have never listened to those "critics". All that they critized DS1 for, is what made it unique and great. I was a big fan of DS1 and its expansion "Legends of Arrrranna", DS2 felt a bit lackluster but it was fine even if not as good as the original. But DS3... is a trasvesti.
I played both the games finished the legends of Aranna and got stuck on that first expansion to the second game. Those brain kinds of monsters in the dungeon of the forest got me good... The main DS2 game was great though.
@@nichghost5727 I ALMOST got it on xbox 360 when I got my first one. Glad I didn't. I still love DS2 Legends of Aranna though, and I could play the heck out of the first one too I'm sure
If anyone from former GPG reads this: I loved your games like no others back in the day. My brother and I played through the campaigns, especially that of DS1, numerous times. Much respect for your work and I hope that you are doing well!
@@RumblesBettr I didn't cry over DS3 but I did feel a little sad because I didn't have a PS3 to play the game and i didn't even know about the existence of game much later.
I still have my 3 disc copy of Legends of Aranna, in folding sleeve. They coloured the sword on each disc differently, disc 1 was a red sword, Disc 2 was a yellow sword, and disc 3 was purple. I have both the main and expansion games in these discs. Every few years I go back and play it again. It really is a gem of a game.
Dungeon Siege 1 felt so friggin ahead of it's time when it came out, and arguably has maintained it's playability through the years (even if modern systems hate running it)
I am amazed that a review of Dungeon Siege can be produced without a single reference to the Siegelet 'Land of Hyperborea' that turned DS1 into a wonderfully complex, rich and immensely satisfying game to play. Well done Jim Farris. I play the game over most festive season and it is so rich and varied I STILL discover new approaches and game play gems.
Oh man i remember playing DS1 multiplayer. It was my first ever multiplayer experience! So many memories farming the chicken levels etc. Anyone else remembers this? I was like 11 maybe 12 haha.
Thank you for making this video. Dungeon Siege one and LoA were the first games I really got into as a child. I was hugely apart of the "editing"/modding scene in the early 2000s and consider those years as some of my finest in a gaming community. Your content is amazing.
damn ... Dungeon Siege 1 along with Neverwinter Nights and Sacred... How many days and nights I spent with my best friend back then. COOP. Thank you so much for developing this game. It's 20 years now. Wow. Time flies. Thank you for the great time and memories.
When the video started with the beautiful soundtrack it brought back an intense nostalgia, and from that, all of the memories of playing this wonderful game came flooding back from it. Thanks for this video, this was such an underrated game!
Square Enix really bowlderized a lot of IPs for console didn't they? Every successful modern rpg on PC does just fine on console. If Obsidian gave their audience a little more credit, they could have had the same success Bioware had with their original IPs in the 2010s before EA did the same.
I remember that my brother got a demo from this game waaaay back then when i was like 3 years old and we both fell in love with the franchise, we enjoyed ds1 and ds2 completely and would talk about our progress and about how we played our characters. I really love this game for the memories and the bonding it created between me and my bro.
"If they had a little more financial levy, they would have pushed for a more rich experience..." What? That's BS, at that time it was popular to dumb-down everything for the consoles, which non-gamers bought more than ever before. Simplicity was forced throughout the industry, and that was helped/forced by the fact that big publishers now owned most the studios. Dungeon Siege 3 is a disgrace.
As a literal lifelong Dungeon Siege fan... this was very bittersweet to watch. My father raised me playing games in his lap, as did my mother. One of them was Dungeon Siege. I still have it installed and go back to play through it from time to time.
Supreme Commander!!! Edited: Thanks for this video I got to learn some more about Gas Powered Games and Chris Taylor. Never heard of Dungeon Siege until now.
i said on a steam forum that Supreme Commander was so innovative for its time! it was the first real game i enjoyed playing back all the first levels again and again never to get bored!
Wow this is super recent, thanks for this! I was looking for a lore video on the Dungeon Siege world but I have to stop and watch this full thing. Very high quality.
i loved the first two, used to play them for many nights with my friends on LAN. I was also was one of those crushingly disappointed by Dungeon Siege 3. That game had nothing to do with the rest of the series and sparked in me a hatred towards consoles (which I blamed for destroying this franchise and many others, including Dragon Age) lasting many years later.
Oh my God.. first and second game is my all time favorite game.. I don't know why but I love the voice acting in this game.. but the standout is Taar.. when she talks my heart melts everytime...it's worth playing the game just to hear her speak (game being great is a bonus) hehe
So much time playing and modding this game. The modding community was and still is a big part of the experience, giving budding gamers the tools to customize the gameplay.
Dungeon Siege is such a comfort game for long winter nights for me. Especially when I reach Glacern and hear the blacksmiths hammer clanking on the anvil and also that "It's a bit nippy out there, try to stay warm!" Got to wait til it snows irl before starting a new save for maximum effect.
I instantly felt the need to like your video the moment you start talking - it sounds really professional. Not too long after i couldn't resist to subscribe, because the content is also very good. Thanks for the awesome voice work and quality content. I really like the format 👍

Everytime I watched this "The Rise and Fall" I feel sad :( I'd like to imagine some day a billionaire come and buy these *"dead"* games from the _cold hands of big companies_ Like EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Square Enix.. They didn't do anything with these titles anyway

it was so unique!
I have such fond memories of DS2. Thanks for the nostalgia hit! :)
i never really played dungeon siege, but when i was younger (7-12) my dad was pretty obsessed with the game. i have good memories sitting next to my dad while he grinded the game and would get excited when he upgraded his gear. i later gave the game a try after my dad beat it and quit. i played the game for around 2 months or so and thought i had surpassed my dads account. i logged into my dads account to compare, and to my surprise my dad was on a whole other league XD.
I really miss Gas Powered Games. Won't ever forget the amazing time I had on both Dungeon Siege II and Demigod Multiplayer.
hearing that theme takes me back to being 7 years old and i would play this game with my step brother at the time. this, age of mythology, black & white... ahh the nostalgia
I wanna hear you say "Legends of Aranna" 1 more time!
That r is so strange!
"Arrranna" ;)
arrrRRRRRRHHHAAAAANNNAAAAAhhh
when i finally got to the part in the video where he starts saying that i lol'd.
@@hughlingard i cringed a little... then I started to like it 😂
I miss simple stories and games like this..
It is crazy how DS was changed by so much from the original 2 though
I know. Part of its charm was the generic fantasy for me haha
Put a lot of time into the the original and LoA when I was younger, still come back to it again every year or so. The soundtrack + seemingly endless world was great for a young mind. A nice and simple game, its soundtrack does not get enough love.
Loved Dungeon Siege, shame we couldn't get more like it DS1-2
Shame we never got a third game in the series...
@@Megalomaniakaal there was a third, it was fucking trash
@@Sentrygun84 Shhhh it never happened 🤐
I still remember it with so much warmth. The most vivid memory is from the goblin mines and the whole sudden miniguns and flamethrowers not only in a fantasy world but in the hands of your party members. My god, how insanely fun that was, shooting fantasy creatures with 4 miniguns and a couple of flamethrowers >:D
You can buy the original Dungeon Siege for less than 2 dollars on Steam
Ross's Game Dungeon video was the best
every few months Humble Bundle has a square enix sale, the dungeon siege trilogy can be bought for the same price, also deus ex 1 and 2 as well.
Multiplayer is disabled by default though
Oh yeah, His dungeon video made me want to play so bad that I bought the game for like 0.79 cents on Steam. Sadly it didn't work that well with Windows 10, Probably because I was trying to run it at 2560x1440.
Does it actually work properly? Last time I installed it from my original DVD the graphics were all weird.
@@definitelynotadam I think it all worked right, I just refunded it because I couldn't run it in my native resolution. But in this video they were recording in 4K so....I must not have tried hard enough lol.
I was quite fond of DS and DS2 back in the day. The Dungeon Siege series had it's problems like the very simple writing. Still, it was a very fun ARPG.
i liked how dungeon siege 1 was one seemless journey felt a bit like the first lord of the ring movie.
Man, I had so many memories with this game. Thank you for covering this
He has a PHENOMENAL documentary voice! It's so distinct and I love it!
I still play this game. 15 years after I played the demo the first time. This is still my favorite RPG game.
I'm happy to see so many people still fondly remember dungeon siege
I played both the games finished the legends of Aranna and got stuck on that first expansion to the second game. Those brain kinds of monsters in the dungeon of the forest got me good... The main DS2 game was great though.
My favorite channel on youtube. Solid content and presentation and zero drama or bullshit. Keep it up. Excellet work.
To this day 2019, I havent seen game like Dungeon Siege , with no loading screen and such a great gameplay !
Man it doesn't matter what game it is you make it entertaining keep up the good work
Dungeon Siege hasn't fallen, the world just forgot about it's brilliance
So... you're saying that it fell out the minds of people?
The third game is... so bad.
It has fallen. The franchise is dead.
@@nichghost5727 I ALMOST got it on xbox 360 when I got my first one. Glad I didn't. I still love DS2 Legends of Aranna though, and I could play the heck out of the first one too I'm sure
After you play torchlight 1 & 2 & titanquest & expansions you won't go back to DQ
If anyone from former GPG reads this: I loved your games like no others back in the day. My brother and I played through the campaigns, especially that of DS1, numerous times.
Much respect for your work and I hope that you are doing well!
i literally cried when i played dungeon siege 3, the first time i enter the menu i said "it's dead, dungeon siege is dead"
I felt the same there... Very sad.
If you literally cried over a game i am literally worried about you
@@RumblesBettr I didn't cry over DS3 but I did feel a little sad because I didn't have a PS3 to play the game and i didn't even know about the existence of game much later.
me and my mom just sat there confused and shocked for like ten minutes after the first "boss"
This Is the first game i've ever completed. And possible the only one. Loved that game!!!
Oh man i remember playing DS1 multiplayer. It was my first ever multiplayer experience!
So many memories farming the chicken levels etc.
Anyone else remembers this? I was like 11 maybe 12 haha.
No bs hiding in the cleaning room at work watching this next to a mop bucket. 😂😂
Where do you work
Yea...can you get me a job there? 😂
I believe it lol
Boss only hears the muffled noise of the narrator.
You rule 😄
Thank you for making this video. Dungeon Siege one and LoA were the first games I really got into as a child. I was hugely apart of the "editing"/modding scene in the early 2000s and consider those years as some of my finest in a gaming community. Your content is amazing.
Dungeon Siege 3 was not a dungeon siege game, but a game I immensely enjoyed
it was terrible. DS3 was a mess.
damn ... Dungeon Siege 1 along with Neverwinter Nights and Sacred...
How many days and nights I spent with my best friend back then. COOP.
Thank you so much for developing this game. It's 20 years now. Wow. Time flies.
Thank you for the great time and memories.
Thanks for this video, "the blessings of Azuna the defender upon you"
What a fantastic video! These long length documentaries on games in general are such a treat to watch and listen to!
Now I want to play Dungeon Siege. Ta. If anyone needs me I'll probably be knee-deep in spiders.
DS1 is my all-time favorite game! For my money, nothing has ever come close.
dungeon siege 1,Great graphics, design, music and enviroment, simply the best❤
"If they had a little more financial levy, they would have pushed for a more rich experience..."
What?
Ross's Game Dungeon anyone?
*EIGHT! EIGHT FIGHTERS! BADASS!*
Hell yeah.
Even Ross admitted that he couldn't remember the storyline to Dungeon Siege lol
20 years later I still enjoy modding this game. One of the best rpg's I ever played!
"Gas Powered Game has created another high quality experience"
Shows a cutscene in which stuff clips through an NPC.
These videos always make me think of the PBS series Nova. Thanks for covering one of my favorite series from my childhood!
i loved the first two, used to play them for many nights with my friends on LAN.
How about Rise and fall of "lancer series"
Starlancer, Freelancer and its cancelled sequel
Wing Commander --> Starlancer --> Freelancer --> Squadron 42 :)
So much time playing and modding this game. The modding community was and still is a big part of the experience, giving budding gamers the tools to customize the gameplay.
I hope you guys make a episode about Sacred :P
Dungeon Siege is such a comfort game for long winter nights for me. Especially when I reach Glacern and hear the blacksmiths hammer clanking on the anvil and also that "It's a bit nippy out there, try to stay warm!"
Got to wait til it snows irl before starting a new save for maximum effect.
most cozy arpg out there!
@@JanJanNik it'll soon be time, winter is coming fast!
The memories of playing DS2.. Oh man, it was a great game!
One my all time favourites.
I instantly felt the need to like your video the moment you start talking - it sounds really professional. Not too long after i couldn't resist to subscribe, because the content is also very good. Thanks for the awesome voice work and quality content. I really like the format 👍
Dungeon Siege II fond memory: about to beat the final boss for the first time, needs one more hit to be defeated; I get my first seizure. XD
That was a great video, thanks your efforts Dungeon Siege will be remembered a bit more and with a positive viewpoint.
I still remember "when the sword hit the shield" loved ds2 :))
top notch quality video my good sir, that was a neat yt recommendation to find this channel
can chris taylor get any more impressive? I just knew him for Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander.
gave you thumbs up for just knowing that dungeon siege was a game series. its one of those forgotten games from my childhood. i didn't play any final fantasy or zeldas or diablo(i was not part of that hive mind), but i did play these obscure games that no one seems to acknowledge they ever existed.
*wow this one is not forgotten at all, there was even Dungeon Siege 3 in 2011(but its dead in gaming years i guess)
Everytime I watched this "The Rise and Fall" I feel sad :(
I'd like to imagine some day a billionaire come and buy these *"dead"* games from the _cold hands of big companies_
Like EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Square Enix..
They didn't do anything with these titles anyway
I'm always excited for new videos from you guys! Editing, writing, and voice over are all excellently done as usual. Can't wait for the next deep dive!
I always liked RPGs that allowed you build more than one character at a time
very interesting video! DS1 was the first game I ever played multiplayer with a friend so it'll always have a special place in my heart
Honestly they need to give the Dungeon Siege IP to someone like Larian games and make a damn sequel already.
The interesting thing is: how would it be different to D:OS? They would be very similar (despite no turn based combat)
I worked at Wargaming Seattle in the 3 years leading up to its final closure. It was my first studio and one of the best experiences of my life. We truly had a great game in development that was nearing release until everything was shutdown out of the blue for unknown reasons.
I've never even played this game before but GVMERS always makes their stories fascinating. 👍
I’ve never even heard of it. The name Dungeon Siege summons vague recollection, but that’s it. But as you said, GVMERS makes the story of its rise and fall fascinating.
Great memories, 1 & 2. Having that party, outfitting two with bows, one caster, and one tank, managing it all, fighting your way thru.
Rise and fall of Neverwinter Nights, please.
That was created by Wizards of the Coast which is still going strong
I shread a tear. Right in the nostalgia with that music..
Thank you, Ross Scott.
Awesome username!
BJ, MAN THE MACHINE GUN
Man Dungeon Siege was my very first 3D RPG when I was 7 years old. What I had before that was the SuperNes and the gameboy color. Needless to say I was completely blown away by it. Absolutely loved it.
I still hope we will get a Dungeon Siege 3 one day
(the one from obsidian does not count, it was abysmal in every way)
I like to call Obsidian's game "Dungeon Thriege"
