@@notinspectorgadget It was the most clear innovation that was, for some reason, never reproduced, even in games that are survival oriented where you have different foods that restore certain amounts of hunger, you never got any sort of "Leftovers". Especially a problem in a game like Fallout New Vegas, that has several levels of hunger that come with various debuffs, MREs are completely useless since they restore so much hunger, that in order to make them worthwhile you need to wait until you are starving before using them. Especially since the "Survival" skill only increases how much hunger food restores, rather than improving how efficiently you ration it out. Having it so that you eat more than you need to at low survival skill and higher survival makes you less wasteful would be a good use of that mechanic. There is so much potential for such a simple mechanic that yes. it IS shocking that I haven't seen it in any game since.
@@moffxanatos6376 It would take effort and resources to create such a mechanic, so usually devs just opt for the easier solution. And sometimes it is just not in the vision of the devs
@@Selnathorn No excuse, having it programmed where it only subtracts the amount that you need to top yourself off rather than draining all of it isn't going to take much longer, if any longer, to code. The extra asset to represent the item being partly used would only require one extra state at minimum and at most a simple chickenometer. Having it programmed to drain MORE than is needed at low survival won't take any more effort than making high survival skill increase the total amount of health/hunger it can restore. The effort vs outcome is vastly in favour of the game, Since using the healing mechanic is going to be something the player is going to use throughout the ENTIRE experience.
The "No Loading Screen" thing is pretty amazing. After I killed the last boss in the castle, I ran in one session all the way back. Up the hills, along the beach and into the redwoods, over the desert, through the snow, back under the mines and all the way back to my farm in one go. No loading screen. The multiplayer was *fantastic!* This game is one of the greats and it should never be forgotten. (The minigun damage *is* way too low.)
Though I can't seem to find it now, I remember stumbling upon *a PowerPoint slideshow made by one of the developers* that explained how the "No Loading" thing worked. (I'm not a game programmer so it was kind of above my head, but man, was it fascinating.)
As in practically every modern video game. Minguns are nigh useless trash! Doom 4 was no exception! And lets not talk about Fckthesdards unbalanced Failout titles. After 3 magazines the gun is broken. Or one entire magazine to the face of a naked unarmored super mutant. And he still stands. Ridiculous, the suspense of disbelieve broken by Mach 10. The only games i can remember right now, giving the player a working minigun are Aliens vs. Predator 1&2. It just shreds. And most importantly Fallout 1/2/Tactics. In the good old Fallout games, the moment you saw an enemy with a minigun. Nr. 1 target, flee or reload....
The composer for the soundtrack of Dungeon Siege is actually Jeremy Soule, the same person behind the soundtracks for the Elder Scrolls games starting with Morrowind. Pretty cool
The guy is a master at creating incredibly atmospheric music. I could listen to his soundtrack for TES IV Oblivion for hours and not lose interest. But the fact that the music is so disconnected from the gameplay really shows how little the actual developers and the composer worked together. The same happens in Oblivion when the music suddenly switches from a serene, mellow tone to a holy-shit-demons-are-attacking intensity... when a mudcrab is after you. You'd thing Mehrunes Dagon is charging right at you, but it's just a little imp.
Played this at a LAN party once (with only a single copy of the game): eight people started in the same town, and over the course of seventeen consecutive hours, spread out so far apart and got so lost, we never saw one another again. Some people never left the forest. Others found a mountain covered in yetis. Some ended up fighting mechs. My two strongest memories of this day were, 1) several of the melee fighters finding a grenade launcher that leveled up their ranged stat every time they shot it which I, the only ranged character, was too weak to wield, and 2) I had to wear the same hideous teal and pink hat for something like eight hours because nothing better would drop.
There is a fascinating article around the Web called "The continuous world of Dungeon Siege" about the difficulty of making a game with such detailed scenery, and no map changes when you can clear everything old out of memory and load the new stuff in, and the ruthless throw-away-distant-information policies and how that works with split parties. They mention the potion sipping technology too.
+ONI Spartan Locke As for the low damage output; back in medieval times, soldiers used wooden bullets as metal ones took too long to craft in bulk. It wasn't until Caxton invented the printing press that metal bullets were able to be cheaply mass produced.
@@Jeffyd133 Exactly what I'm doing now. playing a modded version of dungeon siege 2 (Dungeon Siege Legendary) where you can play all of the DS 1 maps plus way more, honestly DS1 was the best in the franchise and DS2 is very bug ridden, but with mods DS2 is able to feel a lot more like DS1 for the most part, I have a love hate relationship with this game, but this will go down as one of the best games I've ever played.
Dungeon Siege made for some epic LAN parties and yelling about loot back when I was ~16. Friends carried their rigs over and piled computers everywhere in the basement.
yeah Can remember it also with my brother and a cousin. Those good old Saturday with starcraft, warcraft and alien vs predator. A friend always picked the girl-marine who can be heard across the whole map.... miss this times
I remember a LAN party that lasted from friday afternoon to sunday noon uninterupted, except for some pizza and energy drinks. We had to pack up totally exhausted...
When you just keep endlessly running into things that could violate your lawn and it kinda escalates into an epic journey of beating the shit out of everything beginning with budget orcs and local fauna and ending with some ancient evil. And then you can walk back home the same way you came and enjoy the carpet of bodies you left in your wake.
@@TheWoodenshark It went from "Get off my lawn" to "Get out of my neighborhood" to "Get out of my forest" to "Get out of my country" to "Get out of my reality" Don't mess with farmers.
The books in the game help explain some backstory and npc's help give light on the situation. You are supposed to learn that the main villain corrupted all the wildlife in Ehb and made a deal with the Krug to make them overwhelm the 10th legion so he could usurp the throne and take over the land. The villain (Gom) is exacting revenge because he was stopped during a war with the 10th legion years prior. Yeah it's a pretty generic and simple story; but there is a plot. Some books will even tell you the purpose of some of the places ingame, like that large dungeon with those mucosa spiders on your way to Glitterdelve mines, and even how those spiders first appeared there.
Even watching this years later, it KILLS ME that Ross didn't know about mirror mode and rampage mode in DS2. Your fighters would ABSOLUTELY attack the first thing they saw if he just put them in rampage mode.
@@Soldner41 R key Also there's a toggle button on the bottom panel. If it's two white profiles, that's mirror. If it's crossed weapons, that's rampage.
For those passing through... In DS2 you have to hold down the attack button on an enemy for your currently selected character to fight them by default. The setting for clicking once and having your character continue fighting on their own is tucked away in the in game options tab. A good strategy is to take the time to get every character to level 1 in nature magic, that way they'll have access to the basic healing spell (put it in an auto-cast slot in each character's spellbook) Summon Teleporter, and Transmute. This way you'll save on potions. And because spells grow in power as your magic skill rises, your healing output will gradually increase.
@@matthewbreytenbach4483 Another neat trick if you're going with a reduced party count is having someone dual class melee tank and nature mage. When your healer can just soak damage while tossing out the occasional nourish and/or rain, then go back to tanking, it makes life much easier. Last time I played I did a 2-character party with me and Taar. Turns out having a nature mage tank and a sniper combat mage is kinda broken. Gravity stone followed by (can't remember the name of the power that lets you fire a single bolt that pierces targets) is a fast way to delete every room.
When this game came out, I wrote and distributed mods that allowed you to play as the main bosses (Gom, the dragon, and a couple of others). Good times...
Buck K Sorry, those are long gone multiple hard drives ago. You might be able to find them online somewhere, but I could not. On the more common mod upload sites they aren't there, and surprisingly no one ripped them off and uploaded them as theirs. There are some that allow you to play as other minor characters and races, but no boss mods.
Dang, I've only ever played the sequels and spinoffs, didn't know how much the first one got right from the word go! Also, I'm curious if you've ever played the sci-fi spinoff, Space Siege? Also very generic in setting and story, but becoming a pure evil cyborg and slowly stripping away your humanity is great.
+Lazy Game Reviews Yeah, I have, I thought it was very boiler plate, though the cybernetic aspect was interesting. I may mention it in the eventual followup episode.
When I fired this game after 10 years, I realized I'd remembered every goddamn sound in this game like an old friend. I missed being able to smash or blow up every barrel & crate in a game.
+Adrian Shepard Sadly the Steam Version of Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 doesnt have the expansion packs(because of copyright issues from what iv heard), its still kinda worth buying though.
At the time Dungeon Siege was pretty ground breaking, seamless transitions between indoors and outdoors etc.. I remember spending many happy hours with it :)
Hey Ross, I know it's not exactly the same thing, but if you're in the market for a game where you control a big group of ass kickers in a dungeon crawling environment still, 'Super Dungeon Run' on Steam might be up your alley for a night or two of mayhem. Great video though man! Loved the Dungeon Siege series, but the third was such a damn shame.
+Cryaotic Three months after this comment was made, it is safe to say this game is unofficial abandonware. The developer has fled the scene with everyone's money and the game, as far as I know isn't going to be finished any time soon. Huh, makes me kind of sad knowing games made very recently are already almost considered abandonware simply because the devs just stopped giving a shit.
Hey, I wanted to add that the latest monthly videochat is here: ua-cam.com/video/09Rl98PwZs0/v-deo.html The next one will be on Jan 3rd, haven't figure out what time yet.
+Accursed Farms Ross, you might benefit from building a PC with older parts for when you want to review older games with limited support, or try running Hyper-V and use old machines running virtually. Although I'm not sure how that would be to record from, but its just a suggestion.
Ross they made a movie about this game! can't recall the name now and it honestly isnt that good , but i remember the krugs attacking the farm, google and you would find
+Accursed Farms Hey Ross, Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 involve a lot of squad based combat like Dungeon Siege, but it would probably only be fast if you played a Fighter party (like Dungeon Siege). However, unlike it, both games have very strong stories. It's also simply a straight-up DnD game.
Just beat Dungeon Siege myself, and I gotta say, it's a neat game. My party was 5 melee fighters, 1 archer, 1 nature mage, 1 combat mage, and that generally worked well for me, can't imagine going through the game without at least 1 mage, especially for the multi heal spells. I did have to knock the difficulty down to easy about halfway through the goblin dungeon, those AoE flamethrower enemies just happened to cross my bullshit threshold. The GoG release plays relatively fine out of the box (Although I recommend you patch/mod it), minus limited resolution options and 4:3 ratio, and about a dozen crashes by the end of the game, weirdly enough it didn't crash until the first 8 or so hours in. Guess it gets ever so slightly less stable the further you go, guess that's the price you pay for no load screens in a game this old. Also the GoG/Steam releases are missing expansions for DS 1 and 2, and it spits you back to the main menu upon killing the final boss of DS1, instead of giving you the ending cinematic (which isn't anything special, bit of lore, but still...)
@@UnholySoil667 Dont expect great resulsts though....The healing is kinda low, and it takes looong to get good healing spells (...is there even another one? Never used them mutch...)
@@Fion355 There is one. I think it's called healing wind. It is way more effective than the stats show it to be. The whole party is healed for something like half their life per cast. I only keep healing as my secondary 'in case of emergency ' though. If you want your nature mage to level up at a regular pace, you need to have them mostly use attack spells.
@@joelmilten all mages should only summon, their summon attack creatures wreck stuff, at the level of a maxed out fighter. that means more xp than most in the party. it become ridiculous to cast later on, drains you of all mana, or even worse, if you're not pure nature or pure combat.
When you played parts of the soundtrack I thought to myself, "This sounds like discount Jeremy Soule." One trip to wikipedia later and I was like, "Holy shit! It is Jeremy Soule! The man responsible for the Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind, and Kotor soundtracks made this!?" The sad part is the music is great but just does not connect to parts of the game itself. Plus this was made before Morrowind so there is that as well lol.
This game is nothing much today, but in 2002, this was amazingly immersive. This was one of my first beloved games from my childhood. I still have the disc!
I must have watched this video like 50+ times. I recently got DS on Steam, just got to stonebridge and I'm freaking in love with everything so far. I love the premise of being just some disgruntled farmer that goes ham on the countryside, very cathartic.
that problem with the shadows is not related to your operating system at all, it's related to the gpu drivers and their support for older directx versions \ legacy API.
On a whim during the last Steam sale I remembered Ross's video and decided to get the Dungeon Siege bundle for like three bucks. Dungeon Siege ran fine in fullscreen, but trying to play it windowed royally fucked everything. Only the menu would run windowed, then when I switched back to fullscreen there was constant flickering and cursor errors. Nobody else online was having the exact same issues that I had. Custom launch settings changed nothing, reinstalling did nothing, it was like I scratched my imaginary Dungeon Siege disc. After a couple days of giving up trying to fix it, I came back to this video to see what I was missing out on and what initially drew me in, and lo and behold after Ross mentioned it, I changed the shadows to simple and everything was fixed.
"I'd make my whole crew dwarves if I could." That needs to be shirt. I can just imagine the confused look on people's faces as they try to figure out whether they should be offended or _just_ confused. It would be popular with gangs of little people who are prejudice against tall ones too so that would be pretty funny to see as well.
Man I loved Dungeon Siege as a kid, I was so bummed that I never got to play Legends of Aranna that I bought it a few years ago. A bit scared to install though; nostalgia goggles are very securely fastened to me here.
+DaddyPims Watching this actually, I'm going to have to re-install. Also Ross, I'm surprised you didn't show any footage of the swamp/goblin levels. This game spawned a love of swamps in games I've still not shook. Great video though.
Sometimes nostalgia goggles let you down, & sometimes they lift you up. I remember when Gargoyles & ReBoot (seasons 2 & 3) were even better as an adult.

+SekruTheGreat +K4RN4GE911 No. All you need to know about Painkiller is that it has a gun that shoots stakes. That PIN FOES TO THE WALLS. And IGNITE IN FLIGHT.
Yeah, I was thinking that as well, although it's pretty much only at the post-game content (well... right before the final boss, but this is where you do all the side shit).
Back when I played this in the early 2000's, I played mostly mage (and archer from some point). I just thought it was so cool to have all these different mage spells and summoning abilities. I loved to just summon minions who'd fight for me, I didn't feel weak at all. I guess early levels its kinda weak. The music in this game is so nostalgic though, immediately brings me back ... (almost 20 years ago now)
Yeah he's way too harsh on the magic . I totally loved hurling them big explosions while my healers kept an eye on my awesome butchers in the middle of the hostile wreaking havoc on a massive scale . Sublime game and utterly fond memories .
Shout out to all those nature mages back during multiplayer in its day; who kept me alive with the healing wind spell. Also a shout out to the destruction mages who threw those AOE attacks on unrelenting mobs.
I have to admit, I like the idea of a protagonist who isn't some predestined hero, but just an everyday farmer who woke up one morning and was sick of random monsters and other manner of beasts tearing up his crops. I get so tired of prophecy-style hero stories where a specific individual turns out to be some kind of uber-badass and hardly anyone questions such claims from the player character more or less. Ironically, even though I get tired of prophecy stories I do really love The Elder Scrolls games, although I wasn't a huge fan of Skyrim. At least in the Elder Scrolls games there are those who do question whether or not your character is who they claim they are, and not all of the games make you the same level of hero. For example, in Morrowind you're a reincarnated god being and in Oblivion you're a champion figure but you're technically a secondary hero when compared to the character of Martin. I digress, but it's definitely refreshing to play as someone who rises to make a difference not prompted by fate, but by their own agency. I haven't played this game so I could be getting the entirely wrong impression of how things begin, but if I'm right then I can't help but appreciate traversing such a route.
I remember this game in my childhood as immersing myself in a fantastic world, without being able to avoid long breaks to contemplate those 3D landscapes with the excuse of recharging life; everything felt dangerous but relaxing at the same time with Jeremy Soule's impressive symphonic soundtrack as background...
For all that Dungeon Siege got wrong, I felt like its opening scene was one of the best in CRPG history, since you literally start with a rake or whatever farm implement was appropriate given your "actually a farmer whose farm was attacked" roots. That and the pack mules and having a party of mostly fighters and a few mules are the things that really stand out to me all these years later, haha.
I actually never heard of Dungeon Siege before this. It seems extremely fun, I've never really played Diablo type games and am looking to try, plus the generic fantasy setting actually doesn't bother me at all because I've been dying for high, happy, colorful and traditional fantasy stuff after the nonstop wave of gritty fantasy that's been thrown at us the past few years. I'm totally going to try this if I can get a hold of it now. Thanks, Ross c:
You should try Baldur's Gate 2 or Neverwinter Nights 2 if you want an epic fantasy adventure, but they are REALLY long games and take a while to learn if you haven't played d and d before.
+OddJars Oh I've been dying to play Baldur's Gate 2. I love old CRPGs like Fallout and Arcanum and Baldur's Gate 2 has been sitting there teasing me as an awesome RPG where I can actually roleplay for so long now. Hopefully I can pick up BG 1 and 2 soon. And Planescape Torment. And a million other RPGs I *need* to play.
+Caroline J. You can pick up both Baldur's Gate 1/2 and Icewind Dale in steam for $20 a game. You can get Planescape Torment on GOG. I would suggest getting Baldur's Gate 2 because it is a lot better than 1. Planescape Torment is a pretty easy game and its world isn't as open as Baldur's Gate, but the story is absolutely amazing but it is a bit dark so you might want to put that off for now if you don't want to play a dark game. Icewind Dale is pretty good but in my opinion Baldur's Gate 2 is a bit better.
You can check Spellforce (better to buy the whole package) Spellforce Platinum. RTS with rpg elements, where you can build your own army, level up and skill your main character. You can also WASD walk with him manually. Totally underrated game, but it's from the year 2006 young peoples may never heard of it. And buy the first game not 2, spellforce 3 is coming december 2017 maybe also worth to check it.
It's hard to believe I played this game 20 years ago. Even harder to believe it's taken me years to find this video. I've watched all the Freeman's Mind videos, and most of the Game Dungeon videos, somewhat skipping (or only watching part of) only those games that didn't appeal to me. But I loved this game, so how did I miss this video all this time?
As far as I can remember the music being calm and all doesn't matter because when you're fighting the sounds of battle are so loud that you can't even hear the music. So, action always feels visceral and fierce.
I'd say a lot of your complaints about the multiplayer could be answered with, "That's because it's supposed to be played with multiple human players." - You have control of one character because you are meant to have a bunch of other people that take up the role of the AI. You can have up to eight players, the max size of a party in single-player. - The map is so huge and non-linear because you are meant to have multiple players, who could choose to split off and focus their efforts elsewhere. The game also supports a competitive attitude as well as optional PVP, so it would not be a good idea to have all these opposing players forced down the same path. - The elevator pads were difficult to get on because you were supposed to be able to sort it out with fellow humans, who would require less to no micromanagement to squeeze on.
Most of these can be countered with the argument of "why not have each player control up to 8 characters?" Maybe there's some server/resources limitations, sure, but an 8-player lobby could have a total of 64 characters running around. That's insane to think about.
but the thing is, why couldnt the game let you control 8, then if someone joins, you both control 4, then if someone else joins, etc etc? if it had 8 players then everyone would control one, but the less players = the more you should be able to cotrol they could even make systems so you can let someone else control your characters instead, so you can keep using 1 while your friend uses 7, etc etc and thats assuming the game only allows 8 players, if more are allowed, then it should be easily possible to let each control a bigger number without cutting down as more join
19:19-19:47 After RE-playing this game--and RE-watching this video--for the Nth time, I learned that the *game's title* is referenced by Novataya (Droog elder) at the end of Chapter VI: "Journey fast, Kingdom Child. The Seck *Dungeon Siege* may soon be under way." It is also *the title of the final Chapter* (IX). All these years I had completely overlooked both of those references. 🔍⚔🤷♂😅
Ross touches on something at the end when he says "this game might be ok if it wasn't named Dungeon Siege 3. As a Dungeon Siege sequel, I give this a failing grade." There are a _lot_ of modern "soft reboots" of classic franchises that I feel are exactly the same. Prometheus & Alien Covenant aren't bad sci-fi movies, but they are bad Alien movies. Same with the modern Terminator movies (though Dark Fate isn't too bad except for the name). 10 Cloverfield Lane and the Cloverfield Paradox are both screenplays that were originally completely unrelated to Cloverfield, but they decided to tie them in because fuck you, both would have been much better without the tie in. All the good/unique movie/game ideas are getting [FRANCHISE NAME] tacked onto them to try and drive sales with name recognition.
I know this is old video throne of darkness let you play as for characters at once It was Feudal Japan themed and was pretty awesome as well I can't remember if it came out before or after dungeon siege
As a guy who replayed Dungeon Siege 2 several times both Solo and with friends at LAN-parties, it's a great game - in my opinion and I'm glad to hear your opinion on Dungeon Siege 3. There's just one problem with the second game, you level up by dealing damage. That might not sound like a problem, but if you played multiplayer and have one fast attacking player character, the rest of you will soon realize that he's growing to become the chosen one. (Also, don't play Death Mage, almost every enemy in the game has resistance to Death and Evil kinds of magics). Anywho, Dungeon Siege 3 was an incredible disappointment, as a guy who paid attention to the lore of Dungeon Siege 2, Dungeon Siege 3 straight up discarded everything, ancient races from the second game were suddenly alive again as if nothing had happened. There was also no character customization and if you played it Multiplayer, you were forced to share a screen - as if you were playing GTA San Andreas on the PS2 back in the day (even if you played on PC).
I loved this game so much! There's actually a mod to get the artifacts to see the ending of the multiplayer game, if you don't want to do the whole game to see it. Also, there are a couple of shortcuts in the game. One allowed you to go from the first town to the last one. You would get one shot by the enemies of course, but if you're cautious (or if you use a mod to up your levels instantly) then you can make it. I was amazed when I found this shortcut, that was brilliant!
@@GGorsty it was for the multiplayer version only. I haven't played in so many years I couldn't tell where they are... I'm tempted to reinstall the game just to find them again though. I kind of remember that from around where we start, there's a turn in a forest, that leads to a beach after a little while, and then that goes super far in the game...
Yeah i love this game the original one is the best so here is my think: Dungeon Siege 1 -Best Dungeon Siege 2 -Amazing too Dungeon Siege 3 -Waste of time
Nah, there are mods for that , i Play DS2 with an Mod so i can Play trough DS1,2 and addon Worlds with the same Party, aswell as take more than 4 Fighters with me and gain additional extras, not sure how this Mod is called since i got this mod since years now. :/ besides, i am playing on Win10 aswell. :)

Running DS with LOA on modern OS is very easy. Just use DGVoodoo DirectX wrapper and force the resolution to your desired resolution; you will have zero problems.
Seven years ago i watched this video and went on to play the game, i loved it, from there i played Neverwinter Nights, and just everything about these games made me love them, i cant tell what draws me to them, all i know is this old ass game is good af
The two most memorable NPCs for me from Dungeon Siege were the swamp witch vendor and the dungeon prison vendor at the end. I still remember their first-click greetings 20 years on... Swamp Witch: Ooo, look on my porch at the handsome dandies, seeking staves from a goblin's hoard. Look how they hold their nose in the air, not so much as a blink nor stare. Verma knows how to catch their eye; healing salves are here to buy! Fresh from the pot are my potions made, goodies in your pouch I will take for trade. Dungeon Prison: 'Oo's the bigger fool, eh? Me, locked safely behind these bars where the Seck don't care, or you out there with nothin' between you and those devils? 'Afore King Conrad locked me up, all the freedom what's I had was the freedom to starve and sleep in the rain. In here, I've done good for meself, I have. Made a bit of a business tradin' with the guards and other prisoners, if ye catch my meanin'. Like to take a look at what I got? Might be 'andy.
The problem seems the necessity to a multiplatform game, and consoles CAN'T handle real time parties, so... they've just ruined all by developing a generic pad game, Square Enix is the new owner, Obsidian only were hired.
You can play melee, and have the heal spell equiped on auto cast when you go to eat, and just have one very week enemy alive hitting you...just for some extra level ups from casting heals...
My best friend and I spent days playing DS together as kids. We figured out how to get to high level areas early on, and lured overpowered mobs near town guards to grind crazy levels. Multiplayer is definitely where it's at ;)
After watching this video 3 times, might be my favorite Game Dungeon, I finally got me a copy. Let's watch it again before I start playing shall we? Edit: after about 12 hours playing I can say I like this game a lot, all melee is cool! Let the beat downs begin! Although I keep 1 mage and archer. 1 thing though, the camera omg, it's horrible at least 50% of the time even while moving it yourself.
Someone working on the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games must have gotten the message about posseing up, because in the remake of MD Red and Blue on Switch they allow you to have up to eight party members. Boss fights are like night and day compared to the original games when you show up in a turn based combat system with 8 party members stomping on the boss
And on a side note, as I posted with still about six minutes left, the only other game I've played that is (in some sense) a continuous journey is Half Life and Half Life 2. But that's an entirely different genre altogether. But Ross, you've convinced me to pick up the first Dungeon Siege on Steam.
Definitely mix your party! will be infinitely more enjoyable. I remember my 2 melee, 2 ranged, 2 nature and 2 destruction with unique nostalgia when hear that Dungeon Siege music...
with Broken World you get 2 dual classes and I made all my dudes to nature-fighting. There was 2 exception one was my debuffer (combat-nature) and my main who was nature-combat with pure magic found gear and enchants. Every dude was able to group heal and summon creatures. there is nothing better to play dungeon siege 2 with 40 active pets :) You always could change spells and stuffs depending on the area (frost or shock spells) while your pets can do the pure physical damage and all your dudes can attack physical either. Downside of this you have to mod it, otherwise you won't be able to get more summons as one.
Bloody hell, they all thought you meant Slayer as a warrior class XD To answer your original question (unless you've beaten the game already and are content with Slayer), I would listen to The Dropkick Murphys. I like to think it mixes better with the atmosphere than just pure metal.
I played pretty much nothing but Amon Amath while playing Pokemon Red Rescue Team, so you should do whatever you want so long as you're down for forever associating the game with the music. I still get flashbacks of pokemon running around in dungeons when listening to Amon Amarth.
Having played this game myself when I was younger, it made me so happy to see Ross cover it. I had the same thought about gnomes working my computer, too.
The only way I can see a dungeon siege movie that really feels like the game would be a medieval fantasy version of the film "1917" where a runner is sent from point A to B to deliver a warning, and the challenges of getting there. All done in what feels like a single take. Very experimental and niche so it wouldn't likely happen in Hollywood's more risk adverse attitude. But it would be neat to see the attempt I recently played god of war 4 and its a great example of what I'm talking about. I doubt you'll respond to a comment on a nine month old video, but hell I might as well try. One of the awards you gave this game was for it's feeling of being on an adventure. I'm sure you've heard it a million times, but if you haven't yet, you should absolutely play Dark Souls. That's what the game is all about, an uninterrupted adventure through merciless beatings both inflicted upon and dolled out by the player. It's a grand experience that has a beautiful and thought-provoking story that can be totally ignored if you don't give a shit. Even just for the sake of being educated in the topic of the video game industry, Dark Souls is worth playing.
+UJustGotDovahkiined, if you liked Dark Souls, try Blade of Darkness, the real creators of that rogue genre, and IMO better in each pixel for its time, also you can try graphics mods to see it more updated. Cheers.
Oh, I'm so on your side with those technical difficulties. The shadows, the AA, the "new for the sake of being new" without keeping compatibility in mind. And yes, the world needs more of these party ARPGs whreyour squad just goes in and smashes heads!
+Ghost81 Been a while since I've seen you, but alas, I have found you once more. It's like a game, checking every video to see if you're there. But nice little observation there. I pretty much just pay attention to Ross's voice and nothing else, so it just flew right over my head... like a TIE Fighter, I suppose.
Ghost81 You know who else is everywhere? Jesus, apparently. Come to think of it, I've never seen you and Jesus in the same room. Granted, I've never seen you at all, but still. Coincidence? I think not.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about the pausable combat. That was my favorite way to play once I had a few or more fighters. I would pause, issue commands to each individual on what to attack, spells to cast, etc, then un-pause and watch the combat play out. This was especially true at times when I was out numbered or outgunned and I had to work some actual strategy into the combat. I loved DS1 and 2 and would absolutely love more games like them.
This is one of the best episodes to come back to. Just hearing the concept of the game being talked about can make my imagination wander off on a "medieval road trip." It honestly doesn't make me want to play the game, it makes me want to go outside!
I just ran across my original CDs for this game. I think I'm going to figure out how to get it to run on Linux and try this out again. The Multiplayer map was just brilliant and really should have been what the single player campaign should be.
I miss games that made me feel like everything was going to be ok and all my problems could be solved by beating up fantasy giant spiders with swords...
I'm still shocked that the "drink what you need" potion mechanic never became industry standard.
_that's_ what shocks you?
@@moffxanatos6376
Yeah no, that mechanic is amazing.
I actually kind of like the idea of a story that's just "Angry farmer gets pushed over the edge". It's more novel now than it likely was then.

The "No Loading Screen" thing is pretty amazing. After I killed the last boss in the castle, I ran in one session all the way back. Up the hills, along the beach and into the redwoods, over the desert, through the snow, back under the mines and all the way back to my farm in one go. No loading screen.
The multiplayer was *fantastic!*
This game is one of the greats and it should never be forgotten.
"Also the minigun damage is way too low"
That's a shame- wait what
The minigun, yaknow. It's always been a staple of fantasy, Melkor was such a big baddy in Middle-Earth because he had the dakka.
Also flamethrower, grenade launcher and lightning gun.
@Slaggedfire Underated comment. Next time I re-read the Silmarillion I will envision Morgoth as the 'ardest warboss wot ever bossed.

Pretty cool
Had a lovely sense of familiarity playing through those games thanks to Jeremy's music.
hi mugi

That sounds hilarious!
Wholesome af.
These are the types of stories grandpas will tell in 40 years.
Man I miss games that just handed out free LAN multiplayer clients!
"Also, the minigun damage is way too low."
Wait. Wait. You can't just sandbag that. Where'd the miniguns come from?
+ONI Spartan Locke Goblins. There's goblins with mechs, they drop miniguns, flamethrowers, grenade launchers, and tesla guns.

As for the low damage output; back in medieval times, soldiers used wooden bullets as metal ones took too long to craft in bulk.
It wasn't until Caxton invented the printing press that metal bullets were able to be cheaply mass produced.
+TeaDoogun You're wrong, they used splinters.
+Fatty8Claws Those are wooden bullets.

@@Rehteal Thank you very much. Time to replay DS 2 i guess. X)

Oh I remember when western rpg allowed you to have 6+ members parties. That was the best. Now it's just one and maybe two. That sucks
+Bullet Bill For Kingdom Hearts it's just three. Even when you meet a new character or summon something your gonna have to sacrifice someone.

Wiggum Esquilax I think that is also turn base or at least gameplay wise is not exactly what Ross was talking about.
But I can't stand having to sleep just to reuse magic. Always bothered me about D&D.
+Gat the Man it's not turn based. it's real time.
Why do I get the distinct feeling that the next game is going to be a Christmas game like Die Hard is a Christmas film?

This game was so sick, I remember playing it years ago, and loved it
On a whim during the last Steam sale I remembered Ross's video and decided to get the Dungeon Siege bundle for like three bucks.

This is by far my favorite Game Dungeon Episode!
This is from my childhood, I hold it dear to my heart s2

As far as I can remember the music being calm and all doesn't matter because when you're fighting the sounds of battle are so loud that you can't even hear the music. So, action always feels visceral and fierce.
I'd say a lot of your complaints about the multiplayer could be answered with, "That's because it's supposed to be played with multiple human players."
- You have control of one character because you are meant to have a bunch of other people that take up the role of the AI.
Most of these can be countered with the argument of "why not have each player control up to 8 characters?"
Maybe there's some server/resources limitations, sure, but an 8-player lobby could have a total of 64 characters running around. That's insane to think about.
but the thing is, why couldnt the game let you control 8, then if someone joins, you both control 4, then if someone else joins, etc etc?
if it had 8 players then everyone would control one, but the less players = the more you should be able to cotrol
they could even make systems so you can let someone else control your characters instead, so you can keep using 1 while your friend uses 7, etc etc
and thats assuming the game only allows 8 players, if more are allowed, then it should be easily possible to let each control a bigger number without cutting down as more join
I disagree on Prometheus and Alien Covenant. They are bad movies with high quality visuals.
I know this is old video throne of darkness let you play as for characters at once It was Feudal Japan themed and was pretty awesome as well I can't remember if it came out before or after dungeon siege
I'll give it a look
"id like to see more games adopt this style of one continuous journey"
- from the man that brought you freemans mind
Yo! Mind telling me more about these shortcuts??
@@GGorsty it was for the multiplayer version only. I haven't played in so many years I couldn't tell where they are...
I'm tempted to reinstall the game just to find them again though.
I kind of remember that from around where we start, there's a turn in a forest, that leads to a beach after a little while, and then that goes super far in the game...
Yeah i love this game the original one is the best so here is my think:
Dungeon Siege 1 -Best
Dungeon Siege 2 -Amazing too
Dungeon Siege 3 -Waste of time
TRUE!!!! Dunegon Siege 1 deserves a remake.
The thing that was most wrong with DS2 was that you couldn't stack more than 2 buffs! I had 2 spell books devoted to buff spells.
Too bad DS2 is broken under win 10 with that mouse pointer.
A quick search and i found it, well this mod isnt saying that it fixes anything instead it just adds stuff, but since i Play this mod with DS2 i can Play DS again(i couldnt Play either DS1 or DS2 because of Compatibility reasons)
Mod: www.moddb.com/mods/dungeon-siege-legendary-pack
I found a copy of DS Legends of Aranna(with the original) at a thrift store for 99 cents.
Getting LoA to run on Win 7 or latter is a bit of a hassle, but it can be done.
But Sh!t it was 99 cents!
Might be 'andy.
obsidian are actually excellent at RPGs, shame they fucked up dungeon siege III
The first game was developed by GPG, and they're grand strategy pioneers lol.
They were. Now they dead. (talking about GPG, Obsidian lives under medical assistance)
The problem seems the necessity to a multiplatform game, and consoles CAN'T handle real time parties, so... they've just ruined all by developing a generic pad game, Square Enix is the new owner, Obsidian only were hired.
DS3 was fun and a good game, just in a different way. Not a good _Dungeon Siege_ game, maybe, but by itself, it's pretty damn fun.
Your units in DS2 can take initiative you just have to set that up from the options and switch between rampage and mirrored modes.
You can play melee, and have the heal spell equiped on auto cast when you go to eat, and just have one very week enemy alive hitting you...just for some extra level ups from casting heals...
4:38 Dark Souls's solution to this problem is to make EVERY hit bring you to the brink of death.
My best friend and I spent days playing DS together as kids.
We figured out how to get to high level areas early on, and lured overpowered mobs near town guards to grind crazy levels.
Multiplayer is definitely where it's at ;)
I now really wanna see Ross as the leader of a gang from something like the warriors
Call it, like, The Poindexters or something, just clink a bunch of calculators together to lure out their opponents lol
I always keep 2 mages just to heal and the rest are melee fighters. I just mow through everything.
"or record it through a camera"
*Darksydephil has entered the chat*
I miss this game SO MUCH :s
Someone working on the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games must have gotten the message about posseing up, because in the remake of MD Red and Blue on Switch they allow you to have up to eight party members. Boss fights are like night and day compared to the original games when you show up in a turn based combat system with 8 party members stomping on the boss
One of my all-time favourite games. Been playing this on and off since I accidentally saved over my dads save file when I was 10. Good times.
So I have but one question after watching this...
...should I play nothing but Slayer for my entire play-through?
Every dude was able to group heal and summon creatures. there is nothing better to play dungeon siege 2 with 40 active pets :)
You always could change spells and stuffs depending on the area (frost or shock spells) while your pets can do the pure physical damage and all your dudes can attack physical either.
This is the first review of Ross' I've actually wanted to play, the exact opposite of the point of a review.
But it would be neat to see the attempt
I recently played god of war 4 and its a great example of what I'm talking about. The whole game is simply going from point A to point b and other then when it fades out when u die, the camera NEVER cuts away for the entire game
No enemy respawn is like trapping a mouse in a basement, expecting there to never be one in the future ever again just because of that.
Hey Ross, In DS2, you can set it up so your units take there own actions, such as attack on there own, And defend.Options>Gameplay>Next
+Robert Kirchner No, they'll only defend themselves, they won't attack on their own.
Well its better than them standing around being hit,
And if you set them to rampage mode all of them will attack on there own except the one there selected.
-Also a giant fan of your Gordon Freeman's mind, and lover of your voice.
+UJustGotDovahkiined Dark Souls isn't a hack and slash, it's a hit and run.
Is that a TIE-Fighter sound at 11:47?
+Ghost81 Yes
+Ghost81 Been a while since I've seen you, but alas, I have found you once more. It's like a game, checking every video to see if you're there.
But nice little observation there. I pretty much just pay attention to Ross's voice and nothing else, so it just flew right over my head... like a TIE Fighter, I suppose.
Aedan Clarke Yeah I'm everywhere lol
Ghost81 You know who else is everywhere? Jesus, apparently. Come to think of it, I've never seen you and Jesus in the same room. Granted, I've never seen you at all, but still.
Coincidence? I think not.
Aedan Clarke I've been mistaken for that dude plenty a time due to beard and hair. FML

"AI got dumbed down, so your units can no longer take initiative"
*uses mirror mode instead of rampage mode*
I LOVED this game when it came out, think I played it for like 3 years, maxing levels, hunting for gear, joining matches, it was great.
This is one of the best game reviews I have watched!!! So fun!!
multiplayer was an early aughts LAN party treat - get on the elevator before we leave you behind with the monsters!
"can you imagine an rpg where you can just kick out the main character of the group?" (shows picture of Crono)
Hey Ross, feature MYTH by Bungie too!
+Ash Hall
I was thinking this one seems to have some elements in common with Myth, if it had focused more on the RPG rather than RTS aspects.
I hope that Ross played Kenshi sometime after this video, Its about as much of a successor to this as I can imagine
Man 6 years already
I miss games that made me feel like everything was going to be ok and all my problems could be solved by beating up fantasy giant spiders with swords...
I wonder how many people were superconfused when you went from bows to crossbows to miniguns
The one true evil of Dungeon Siege: The goddamn broken fairies breaking the fucking maps when they "aid" your party.
Man, i can imagine a Dungeon Siege-type MMO. Two players fighting eachother with bigass ganksquads of preferably 20 people. Imagine clan battles.
I love DS so much...
