Making a Willow Rooting Compound

  • A friend of mine has offered to give me a few branches from her pear tree to root and plant as yet more pears for my pear forest. But first I need a rooting compound.
Willow trees and shrubs have a hormone within them that allows them to root their own branches if they touch the ground. This is because willows have shallow root systems and are easily tipped over by soggy ground and high winds.
We can use this hormone to root other plants as well simply by making a strong "tea" or infusion from the willow branches. I've been waiting for the weather to cool down again to start this project and it began to break last yesterday. Time to get started.

Thank you for the excellent video and information. We have tons of willows on the property and want more fruit trees. I will use your recipe to root them.

A very informative video. I liked that you were able to include some small factoids about other plants that wouldn't make up enough for a video of their own.
FYI: You're correct in that the bottom of the leaves showing herald rain but it has nothing to do with the wind. Both Oak Trees and Maples have a silver underbelly. When the weather turns and a cold front moves in, the ambient air pressure drops very quickly and the leaves are not able to rapidly equalize their internal pressure with the ambient. It is this pressure differential that causes the leaf stem to twist, ergo showing the bottom.
The furry and uncoated underbelly of the leaf breathes and exhales H2O and CO2. This in turn causes a slight pressure differential inside the plant that makes it possible for water containing nutrients to work its way via capillary action to the leaves.
I use a home made potting soil made from coir, black volcanic sand, manure, soil, and powdered carbon derived from hardwood. Can I use this willow tea sparingly to stimulate root growth on plants pre and post transplant?

Wind makes it just impossible to get through the video. If you're just here for the procedure, it seems to be: harvest about 1/2 bucket of willow cuttings (woody, green, and leaves), steep in non-chlorinated water in a sunny spot for about a week, then soak your cuttings that you need to root in the "tea" for a while, but not too long before planting them in rich compost.

We use it after 12 hours in the nursery. All the liners are helped by it, it will go bad within 2 days or so, so I pull the plants out and try to keep the water cool as I can. We also use it for tinctures for our dog. I have to keep pulling the dogs out of it and putting it up on the table. The dogs LOVE the sweetness of it. I'm going to make willow water and refrigerate it. We just pour boiling water over them, and cover the buckets with aluminum foil - the foil will turn black overnight from the salycic acid. It's very powerful medicine. If you research the actual way to take it is to cut a square in the trunk and it will heal itself. Nobody wants to let you do it though

Since Willow has the Aspirin component, I would worry about the animals drinking the water as Aspirin can cause clotting in the blood to stop causing internal bleeding and death if they drink too much, just saying

I thought this was making a willow rooting compound not the history of oak trees and willow trees?

Is there a much greater advantage in stripping the bark to extract the chemicals, where possible, from a branch of older growth that is still green?
I recently did this and saw no difference in the color of the tea from an earlier potion I made as you suggest, cutting the branch into small pieces.
I made the tea after boiling water, rather than letting it soak at room temperature.

go make your own videos and we can come leave rude comments for you as well. Jeez. She taught us about mullein, oak leaves and willow rooting tea - what did you teach anyone? Nothing except that you have no manners.

Geez, could you be more long winded? Nobody is looking for a nature lesson, just how to make a rooting compound. Get a teaching certificate if thats where your heads at but please, save the (what seems like) hours of youtube video lesson in horticulture.
