    About 10 or so years ago my mother showed up in our driveway with a piece of willow LOG in her trunk. It was a few feet long and maybe 6" in diameter. It had one healthy branch near the top. It looked more like firewood than a cutting. I laughed when she told me to plant it beside my swamp. I dug a hole in the black muck, and hit water about a foot down. I dropped the end of the LOG in the hole and walked away. Looking out the window, it looks to be about 40 feet tall now. I started another a few years later from a branch, and its probably 30 feet now. If you can't get a willow clone to grow, you should turn in your gardening gloves immediately. Just make sure you actually have enough room to grow these though. If they like the conditions they're in, the growth is explosive once they take hold. IMO they are one of the most beautiful trees to ever grace this planet. Good video Wisconsin Wonder.

      Hell yeah! I was wounded when my brother in law cut his because it was above where his well source was. I understand, but sucks. Well, it was cut like 3 feet off the ground. It just kept growing. He sold that house, maaaaybe it still exists.

    If you're planting in a wet area you can just put them straight into the ground.
    I've got some large willow trees on my property and my problem is stopping them from growing. Sometimes a branch will touch the ground, if you leave it, it will form roots and you got another tree.

    Will this work for weeping cherry? I just had some large diseased trees taken down that are in a very swampy uphill area that's killing oak and ash, an arborist suggested planting willows. I have a weeping cherry tree in my pool area...would love to use that.

    • @ExpeditionHomestead
      @ExpeditionHomestead  5 років тому

      They can be found anywhere really but you would probably have the best luck finding one in a local neighborhood that was planted years ago. Possibly check with the land owners to see if you could take a cutting!

    :) I've had willows on my property before. The question is not how you propagate willows. They do that quite well on their own. Too well in fact. The question should be how do you get them to not propagate? For example growing over septic tank drain field lines. Those willows are sneaky. Willows propagate 4 ways: sexually, asexually, clonally and by root suckers. Basically short of nuking them from orbit just to make sure; they will propagate on their own. like tribbles on the original star trek TV series.
