I like you. U kept calling me ‘honey’.
:D LOL
Lol same😂
Haha same!
No he was talking to his wife she was holding the camera
You can also tell that because she replies
A couple weeks ago, I received fresh wood chips from the power company. I found a few willow sticks (more like twigs) in the mulch that managed to survive the chipper. I put them in water as you recommended and I pretty much forgot about them. I looked at them this morning... ROOTS! Thanks for the video.
Awesome!
@@HomesteadingOffTheGridhi I like you video have you you try this in pond or fish pond they look beautiful in there they love water
I started one the same way and today mine is reaching for the power lines! They grow sooo fast. Gorgeous trees . Loved this video. I got my starter from a lady and she laughed at me when I asked , how do you grow a weeping willow . She snapped off a small branch and said, Stick it in water and wait. . I can relate to what he said. Lol
Wiesbadengera M How long does it take them to grow and canopy?
@@GD-bm1bu if you ever add them near a pond they will never leave
I'm glad Im not the only person, that knocks on the door of a stranger to get cuttings. I have also done the same just to take photos of beautiful specimins :)
You aren't scared of getting yelled at to "git off ma lawn" or maybe welcomed at the door with a gun drawn?
@@blahuhm6782 has ha not many people in UK have guns at the ready strict laws....but no I don't worry I look at it like this they'll iether say clear off or yes go ahead😂❤️
You should show us an update I'm curious how much it's grown in 4 years
Probably the simplest way of growing Salix (willows) is to take the cuttings in late September, take 15 inch cuttings, carefully remover the bottom half of the side shoots and put the cuttings into a trench 10 inches deep, 6 inches between cuttings and press back the soil. 12 months later gently dig up the rooted cuttings and plant in their final positions. DO NOT plant them close to the house!!! Probably 90% of the cuttings will take. Hey presto many trees and hardly cost anything.
You can make charcoal for drawing from many willow trees. Collect willow twigs say 1/4 inch diameter, remove side shoots. Most importantly peel off the bark, the charcoaled bark will be too hard to draw with. Put the collected twigs in a unwanted metal biscuit tin with just one or two small holes in the lid. Put the biscuit tin on a barbecue or a fire, when the smoke has stopped coming out of the holes, remove the tin carefully, remove lid and drench the charcoal to stop it burning away. Pour off the water and allow the charcoal to dry. Hey presto, great charcoal and hardly cost anything.
Cheers,
John.
Wow great info!
Have you cooked with the charcoal? I knew I loved willows but seems to serve many functions!
Just got started with my willow tree bonsai. So far doing great. I remember the huge one at my grandparents house. My husband freaked out about the roots, so I decided to go with bonsai instead.
Mine rooted in water but died a week after (carefully) planting them in bonsai pots. What do you think I did wrong?
Everything
@@capitalisticcommie maybe the ground was to fertilized?
If the leaf of any cutting droops or even falls off it doesn't mean it has died. Keep with it. iIt just means, that it is using the energy, as mentioned
Thanks for this. There's this willow tree my mom and I loved and we were planning on buying one to grow before she passed. But now that I know I can just grow a tree from the cuttings of that tree I'm happy. Perfect memorial tree and its free
“Honey can you see the roots?” “Yeaap 🙄”
I have been trying for months to root cuttings from a weeping willow in our neighborhood with no luck. I'm excited to try your method! And encouraged to do it in spring.
I have the same problem. I get them to root and when I transfer them to a pot with soil they die. It’s very aggravating.
@Runnin2Live when you eventually pot them, try keeping them covered with a plastic drape. Think about it like a cheap greenhouse... the new growth will need sunlight but not directly at first.
I've been growing crepe myrtle this way, and I'M SO HAPPY with the results.
@@marylangway1343 Thank You! I will try that for sure! Have a great day!
This does work. I've actually went to one of my neighbors cut three small branches, soaked them in water and after 7 days, roots came out. I planted them to big pots and watering them everyday.
Thank you for this.
I like that you address your wife or significant other as honey. That is so sweet! Thank you for the tips! ❤️👍🏼
Thanks for your presentation. I have taken about then cuttings from a weeping willow tree and thanks to you have placed them in water. I also took over 100 cuttings from a great fig tree which are doing very well. I have 6000 meters of land in France and my plan is to great a forest of trees over time to contribute to biodiversity and the eco system.I am going to follow your advice to ask people if I have take cuttings from their trees.
I started 4 willow trees from part of 1 branch. i am so happy, they are beautiful.
I am twisting the bases/trunk area of 2 each to make 2 beautiful structures.
They have gone from twigs to weeping in 1 year.
Did the two around each other work?
@@faithflynn9333 i let them grow individually for about 6 months. Then planted them very close, once theywbere establoshed, but still flexible. yes they are working, growing nicely. I only did a couple loose turns. The trunks are thickening up too.
Dejavu Psychic Speaks can I grow them in a pot this winter and plant them out in the spring? Or should I just put my rooted starts straight in the ground ? It get very cold here in winter
@@marlboromatt5656 that is what I would do, since they are new cuttings. In general, once established maybe after 1 full growing season, and then 1 winter near the home or inside a garage at night. The willow is a very cold hardy plant.
I knew one could do this. Just needed to know best next step. Thank you for I am planting 50 of these in various spots.
Hi from England! my neighbour has a beautiful weeping willow and we've always talked about taking cuttings, and now we know how! thanks for the video
If you live in an area with high moisture just cut a willow branch and stick it in the ground. I've done both methods and they both work. In my area, the deer really like Willow I lost a bunch of cuttings to deer. I found that when I soaked the willow it was really hard not to break the roots off when planting.
Seeing tons of deer around here and got 2 willows coming an thinking of cuttings but wasn't thinking of deer!
Glad u mentioned I will need to take some defensive measures for the cuttings
I 3 years my Willow is crazy big it is about 30 ft
Thank you! My neighbor has a willow his mom planted when it was a baby some 20 years ago. I got a perfect spot where water drains that new ones will love.
Thank you for the advice! I started some great ones in only 2 weeks! They're starting to put out new leaves even already! 😁👍👍
Great job!

Thanks for the tips. That is the plan for today, plant me some willows... Subbed and liked....
Glad to see people are still doing this, I just put my willow in water, I hope yours grows great :)
I planted one 2 years ago it was 4 feet tall; now is about 25 feet tall and 20 feet round
In 2 years it grew 20 feet!?!??!
Paul Rizik Yes sir. I planted on a place where water puddle and it won’t any more, also that high humidity killed (rotted) other oak trees near by but the willow is standing strong and disappeared all traces of water.
@@rodriguezdji perfect I got 2 willows on order just for water/flood control on my property I hope they grow very fast too
Paul Rizik Awesome! Good luck! I use cedar mulch around the base to boost its mold and fungi resistance
@@rodriguezdji awesome I will look into cedar mulch too tyvm for the help mate
👍👍👍
awesome information, so glad I've found your channel. I had to let the housing association lop severely my weeping & twisted willows as our houses are being demolished and all our gardens are being bulldozed. I've dug up what I had the energy to dig up but now Ive seen this I'm straight down my garden tomorrow to grab a load o twigs of each to rescue , keeping my fingers crossed for success .
Would you mind me asking how your cuttings did? I'm so sorry about your home and garden. I hope you were able to get some clones to root and have an exact genetic copy of your original. :)
@@cattfishing Hi Kat. The twisted willow took very well. I gave a couple away to friends and have three left in pots doing great. I'm going to plant them eventually but they are going in the back of the back garden, a section I have not finished prepping yet, mainly because I've been looking after hubby, who had a heart op then got shingles. And also a small bee colony decided to nest in a compost heap that needs moving and I don't want to disturb them. I've had advice that they will move out in a couple of months, I hope that's true. Sadly the weeping willow cuttings did not take at all. I went back to see if the original trees were saved but alas no every single plant on the estate has gone for good. V sad 😢
I planted my cuttings a few weeks ago having them developed nice roots. Now they don´t seem to grow anymore.
I have watered and also some rain the recent weekend.
Our farm is Willow Creek Farm. Thank you for saving me sooo much money.
I was told no 😢 luckily I found another tree at a park and took some cuttings. 😊
Thank you so much. I have a weeping willow and I want to grow more.
What’s really cool is I put mine put my cuttings in for about three days and mine had longer roots then even 20 days😂
Thank you soo much. We have a huge willow tree and I want to take cuttings . X
Thanks so much, my friend's mom purchased a house with one with probably a 6 foot diameter trunk, seems like good genes so I'll give it a try. Lol
That sounds impossible are you sure? The largest willow I've seen had a 2 feet diameter and I've seen many!
that's crazy that it took so long to root it takes literally a couple days for me
Great video! I’m doing this now thanks to your help.
Just now finding this video. It was helpful😊
Important to say. Please keep these trees away from buildings. They tend to damage the foundations. Actually the reason I watch this video is cause they will take big willow in front of my house down due to this issue. I wanna keep it alive in a way. 😢
I think I may have Accidentally stumbled upon a willow cutting...from a decorative centerpiece I took home and placed in water.
It has since spouted rootings/foliage
Been trying to identify it and Your Videos come the closest...
This was really really helpful. Thank you. :)
Thank you for the well-informed video! I am currently attempting to propagate my gorgeous Weeping Willow tree from one of it's clippings. How long should I nurture it in a a container of good soil before I can plant it in my yard?
Yay! I want to plant one in a damp spot in my yard. I just have to find a willow tree...
Just cut around 15 little cuttings (from couple of different weeping willow species), preared water bowl for them, hope I'm not too late with this 🙂... guess I'll see in about 20 days. Thanks for instructions.
Did it grow
@@morelfartsinmymouth123 yeah, few of them withered (by my mistake) but most of them are doing just well 🙂...
I'll put them in their places once they grow big enough.
I also have the same plant I think. When i got it, it was in water. Small leaves were coming out and after a couple of weeks the branches were beautiful green covered with green leaves. Now it’s been a week the leaves are becoming curly. Some of the branches have started to dry. I changed the water also nothing changed.
My favourite tree!
Informative, I thank you very much for sharing your bulk of knowledge with me!!!
Thankful
Awesome video willow trees are beautiful
I've done this method 2 years ago and planted it, now the tree is about 3 meters tall.
This was very helpful. Thanks!
Can you grow willow tree in a large pot but not transfer into the ground? I just want a small tree so I can take clippings for my rabbits.
Bonsai basically
I’ve been using whole branches same way you did same result
What's the longest length u have successfully propagated? I heard willows were easy to root but wasn't sure if their were limits for length or thickness of cutting/branch
How long does the clipping need to stay in it’s pot before you can permanently transplant?
Can I grow weeping Willow in bigger planter or it must be in ground? Secondly does it demands less than 30 celcius temp?
What do I do with it in the winter I live in Vermont I started three with your help in this video just not sure what to do in winter
Would you recommend fertilizer? My uncle chopped down our grandparents nearly 70 year old Willow and had most of the cuttings hauled away before I could get to them. I have a small amount of switched and three 1/2” diameter branches.
Do you recommend scaring the bark before putting it in the water, or just leaving it as is?
Hey, I just watched this video, I had a question, where should I keep my willow tree clipping after I take it from the jug, replant it in its own pot? Where should I keep the pot? Do I need to keep it inside for a few years? Obviously the baby tree will Survive my climate right???
I live in NewJersey.
Cool
Worked!! Great vid- Tks bud.
Nice job guy
if you do this in the summer, after potting, when should you plant it in the ground? thanks.
Hold on I thought he was calling me honey! 🥰
Great videos thanks
we have a neighbor that doesn't live by us anymore her house burnt down. she has a big beautiful willow tree she chopped it down and left the stump all the branches are drying out on the ground i should go get some such a shame she cut it down.
Need some help asap! My water is growing fungi, white clouds of them gathering around the stalks, what do I do? (I don’t want to start again, these are the only cuttings I have left of my childhood willow that sadly got uprooted in a storm)
Awesome! Thank you!!
Thanks for the information,
can you give us an update on your weeping willow cuttings?!
One of them, beside our pond, is now 25 feet tall and its beautiful limbs shower over our driveway
Thank you very much that was nice video. I bought some from Wegmans today for Easter but could I put a couple of those stems in water to root.? Or does it have to be off of a tree with the leaves.
Can they survive and grow in the desert? I live in Las Vegas
I know this is over 1 year old but I wonder if someone can help. I have 3 weeping willow cuttings that are growing fantastically, HOWEVER they are growing out sideways, not up. Should I tie up the new branches so they grow taller instead of wider? They look like a ground cover currently.. Thank you!
Just let it grow. It will straighten up. Plant in sun and water often. Very easy to grow.
Unless I lived on a property with 1) a body of water and 2) the location was far away from the house or other buildings, I would never grow a weeping willow. They are very high maintenance once they mature.
At what point would you plant it in the ground?
Can you do this in the winter?
Thank you
Hi Kevin,
There are SO many Salix species, They grow very large in New England, like 80' tall. Here in Charlotte, if you see one 25' tall it's the state record. LOL, Too hot and dry.
Do you know about the properties of the bark?
Is there a better time of year to take cuttings or does it matter?
Thanks
Just starting some willows. How long can I leave them in the water? It is too cold to plant outside. My timing was awful to start this process huh?
what do they look like now
Thank You 👍☺
Can I take a single branch and cut it in three?
Yes
You can get it on eBay real cheap if your not living in the country side
Hi. When is the best time to prune my little willow tree? can I do this now(5th of Apr)? Thnaks.
Ali S it would be best to take the cuttings when all the leaves on the tree have grown
Have you ever done this with a weeping bald cypress?
Did you put the cuttings into just water or did you put anything in it like growth hormone?
Can I do this with any tree? It will root this way? Or are there only specific types of trees that this works with?
I have had better and faster luck by just shoving the clipping in wet dirt. Can get a bunch of tree's off one long clipping.
Will the newly planted cuttings survive during winter?
........casually has 5 weeping willows in my lawn
I’m going to go to my near by forest and make a few of these #earthday
Will it grow at a temperature of 20 - 30 degree Celsius......
I have to dig up my beautiful weeping copper beech tree this week, have you got any tips??
What temperature to you keep the new cutting at?
Will this work with a weeping cedar tree? I’ve had mine for years but they are slowly dying. I wanted to clip the living branches to grow new ones.
It is very difficult to get many of the conifers to grow from cuttings unless you have access to a 'mist propagator'. Have you tried growing from seed?
john woody No, I have not tried. I bought these trees years ago, when they were already established. I ended up having to cut one down a few month ago. The other is doing better.
I have planted willow cuttings in water, and after roots are 1" in length I transfer them to potting soil. The willows in potting soil are the first to die. The leaves turn brown on the tip, and then it spreads. Before long, the entire plant is dead. What is wrong? The ones that I left in water, last longer. They end up dying as well. Can someone help me?
You can wait until after the first frost and root them directly in the ground.
Last frost, rather
I appreciate your quick response. This is the end of winter. Can I do anything to save them now?
Thanks.
Can you just clip it from the end? Or do you clip it from the branch! Or from the branch? I need to know!
I'm just wondering cuz I would love to have my home swimming in Weeping Willows!
Question.? Did you change the water much during the cuttings rooting at all .
It gets ahd when directly put cuting twigs in pot mixed with soil, manure - animals, compost collecting under Pine trees - almost decompose pine needles. If you in possible of course. Then lit by the sun place and lot of watering.
Did you leave them in the shade or in the sunshine to root?
Typically in the shade, the sun will tend to dry the stem out while there are not enough roots to keep it hydrated. This is why it is often suggested a polythene bag is put over the cutting and pot.
Did you use a root hormone?
Grow plant N-P-K will give power!
I want to send you a picture, where can I send you on? I also want to know whether I can keep I’m indoors? I live in an apartment in Dubai and have a small balcony where I can put it if it needs to be placed outdoors. Please help.
How much do I sell each willow sampling for
I need “the other” as you said, about the longer ones...because my tree is very mature, and my cuttings are about 25”, and some are Y shape. Do I need to make extra cuttings if them all? The longer ones of course, “weep” over. Help please???? Thanks for the video!!!
