Me, my wife and 3 daughters have all followed Dr. mikes dietary guidelines and are doing a deficit to lose and are able to stick with it and are losing weight and feel unrestricted
Calorie deficit is older than the dinosaur 😂😂😂…it’s scientifically proven. People need to remember that it took years to put on their weight. So take your time. I lost 40 Lbs in about two years and five years later still maintain my weight. The trick for me is 200 calories day deficit, going to bed early, cutting out breakfast and snacking on Air popped popcorn on weekends. Also eat a ton of vegetables as they are low in calories and fill you up. In fact buy a wok throw in vegetables olive oil garlic ginger etc (your choice) maybe finely chopped meat it’s filling low in calories and healthy.
I love the part about soreness. When I was eating a "healthy" whole food diet I had the DOMS feeling almost every day. My legs felt as if I'd been doing squats without any exercise or with mild hiking. On Carnivore, I barely get DOMS after a big workout. It's really nice not to have the pain but there is a missing feedback mechanism there that prevents people doing junk reps maybe.
It may be the creatine Carnivore diet is naturally high in creatine, and it promotes recovery and boosts performance. I'm a vegetarian and adding a creatine supplement woked wonders for me.
Creatine was certainly helpful for me in the pre-carnivore days but it came with an off side-effect I've never read about. Pain in places I hadn't had pain before, and that went away when I stopped taking it.
Probably less inflammation from lack of insulin spikes. Probably sub-optimal to minimize all inflammation for muscle building but if it helps you get more work in nice.
I’ve tried carnivore, keto, almost vegetarian (fish and veggies only) and a balanced diet of mixed veggies, various proteins (chicken, turkey, salmon, tuna, pork and carbs. Guess which one worked the best? No surprise it’s the balanced diet of protein, carbs, healthy fats. I feel much better and overall healthier with this diet than any of the others. It works great for cutting/bulking too. For cutting I switch out the salmon for tuna and pork for turkey. Just doing that cuts out 500-700 calories. It’s great because I don’t have to lower my volume of food.
I’m sure some of these diets work for some people but…. Yeah a balanced diet is just better for most people. I think these people just go into these with terrible diets and feel better and think that this is it, the peak
@@SentralkontrolIt's a cycle. People destroy themselves with bad diet, then go on extreme diets as a form of healing, only to dig themselves deeper into the hole of metabolic dysfunction.
I like leaning towards carnivore simply because I have food allergies to a lot of veggies and not being able to digest them well. Been like this all my life. I've found that if I focus on meat, fruit, sprouted grains (Ezekiel bread), jasmine rice or yellow potato's, nuts, avocado oil/olive oil, and cottage cheese, I tend to feel amazing. The second I introduce veggies, I get bloated and feel like I am slowing down.

It’s safe to say everything doesn’t work for everyone. Key take away from this video for me is just eat real food, stay away from garbage foods and you should be ok. If you have health issues since birth like me then you will understand why an elimination style approach to eating is a godsend. I just wanna feel better. I think that’s what everybody wants who is suffering from a degree of sickness or disease. - clearly don’t eat junk guys. Stay away from it and heal. Go for quality.
I've been on Ketovore & Carnivore for many years (over 12 years in total), especially the last 3+ years on Extreme Elimination Diet (the Lions diet) because of my Chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis! It helps me incredibly! I've also been following Tristyn's path for about these 3-4 years! I think it's great how well his health has improved in a positive way, mentally, and physically Tristyn now looks healthier with a little more healthy body fat percentage.... From time to time for athletic competition - competition wanting to be extremely lean for a few weeks is okay....But not 1-2 years tormenting yourself like that! I love my carnivore lifestyle because I have less pain, inflammation and need to take less medication! But if this diet is not for everyone, it requires a lot of discipline and also certain knowledge, because you can damage your metabolism in the long run if you take it too extreme! Greetings from 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🤗
I have the same results on my Omnivore diet. No processed foods. Carnivores and Vegans look very unhealthy, emaciated after about 5-10 years. You’re on a food elimination diet is what helped with your arthritis…not the meat.
Very insightful. Love these types of videos. I lost over 100lbs with a keto diet. I was at 265lbs now I’m at 168lbs. I’m deciding to add more carbs into my diet to help build muscle along side high protein
@user-pm7pw1tl3t I mean, if they went from 265 to 165 and then started to try and bounce back up, how is that not correct? Additionally, depending on the scale or the day, you can fluctuate by about 3lbs. I usually gain 2-3lbs after I chug a bunch of water and eat breakfast.
@@user-pm7pw1tl3tWhat isn't mathing? If they were overweight af, losing weight first is usually the goal. Then depending how you like lifting and the exercises you just maintain your new healthy lifestyle or start going more into building muscle or even X sport.

I’m 33 and have been in a decade long permabulk. Tried reducing calories but that path always fails for me. Started carnivore on Jan 1st and loving it. But the ultimate plan is to use carnivore to cut from a 35% body fat down to about 10%, then do what Dr Mike says here: slowly add carbs back in and see how that goes. Working out without carbs just isn’t the same
I'm on a hybrid Carnivore + fruit diet. dried pine apple and meat is for me. I do have some breads once in a while. fresh fruit just shoots out of me like a cannon.
fruit is just sugar. Some fruits are fake and bred to be sweeter than candy bars. Fructose is creating massive glycation in your body whether you know it or not because it is 10 times more glycating than glucose. In fact, the A1C test only tests for GLUCOSE glycation, funny right? It is one of the biggest kept secrets in the world; fruit is actually horrible for health.
Thanks for providing this content. I am currently reading Peter Attia's book outlive. It appears there are a lot of overlap when it comes to longevity and muscle building. Additionally some competing issues. I would be interested to see a video that covered how one could gain mass and increase performance (strength) while focusing on longevity.
I do a form of hyper carnivore. I eat some fruit berries and vegetables, but I restrict grains starch and processed sugar. This is where I feel my personal best . That being said I will have some dextrose, clusterdextrin or honey intra workout every now and then .
I do the same regarding incorporating carnivores mix with vegetables some fruits. Lost 17kg in 2 months with no efforts but I do fasting aswell between 1-2 days per weak . 6 kg left until best i am I’m my best fit
I've been on the carnivore diet for nearly 11 months and I'm putting on muscle easier than any other time in my life. I'm also completely lean with a very low fat percentage.
I started the diet for mental reasons still struggling with mental issues but physically I have never been happier with my body. I’m super shredded and it’s super easy to put on muscles.
@Hossaly97 what exactly are you eating? You still using seed oils to cook the meat? Are you using seasonings? You eating any veggies or fruits? Still eating sugar? Usually from my experience if you have something like that still in there even if it's a little it'll make a big difference.
I started to die for mental reasons and they really thought about the physical aspect of it, but since I started the diet, I have never been leaner in my life. Super easy to put muscles so much energy! Couldn’t be happier with my physique right now
He's not a nutritionist lol he studied nutrition as a part of his degrees, yes, and he is knowledgable, yes (talking about Jared), but not a nutritionist and obviously not a professor. Mike is a professor, but not for nutrtion either.
You're not dealing with metabolic conditions or health issues. When Mike says you can be "healthy" following any low-processed food diet, that simply isn't the case for specific illnesses. Cancer leaps to mind, where the protocols we use (therapeutic clinician nutrition) are ketogenic in nature due to cellular fermentation issues. But for "healthy" people and super low bodyfat types like you, sure. Just keep an eye out for any signs of early insulin resistance. If you spot them, back off the carbs. Otherwise, have at it. And if you feel okay being a bit bloated and farting all the time, great. And all that said, Mike is a super smart, well-spoken guy who really took an intelligent approach to this. Really enjoyed the video Tristyn. Thank you.
This was a good discussion guys. I would love to hear mike and jared talk more about factors that can help a lot in advanced individuals be it nutritionally, training or "supplement" wise.
@@khronos2213 bro, most people take up the carnivore diet to fix their health issues, they don’t do it to become IFBB professional bodybuilders. If you want to become a pro BB that requires a separate diet.
@@JetskiDex Just regular resistance training is impeded by this let alone bodybuilding. Maybe I was a bit harsh in my orevoius comment, but the carnivore/keto diet isn't sustainable. Younger people can do it because their bodies are more resilient and even then only for a few years. People mainly take it for some allergies, weight loss, autoimmune diseases... Most of the benifits could be experienced from the weightloss alone, it could have even erased some of the other issues. For anything else it's just an elimination diet just like they said. That fibre is good for your digestion is just very disputed. it doesn't mean that a lot nutritional experts say vegetables are healthy that it's true. because lot's of scientific literature is either outdated or just bad science. They are usually epidimilogical studies, not randomised controlled trials. You don't need fibre for peristalsis, you don't need to bulk up your stool, this doesn't even make sense. You also don't need it for your gut microbiome because eating a lot of fibre will only make you get more bacteria that like fibre. If you don't eat fibre then you don't need them. On the other hand, fibre can block the absorption of nutrients because it just sits there in your colon undigested,

I can tell you personally when I deliberately started adding more carbs and realizing how important they were I gained way more muscle and had way more energy in the gym. I was doing low carb crap at 1st kuz I was just following along with what was popular. I got lean on carbs as well. I absolutely love carbs and protein and fats sneak their way into my diet as well. But the high carb life is where it’s at if you lift weights regularly.
The gut microbiome thrives on fibrous carbohydrates. Your gut is responsible for so many processes including even serotonin production. Not eating fiber is to my knowledge very bad for your gut. There was a study done by a husband and wife research team (I forget their names - Justin and someone else) that put lab mice on a high vs. low fiber diet for 4 generations of mice and found: the mice on a low fiber diet lost, and irrecoverably, something like 80% of the species of bacteria in their gut microbiome. Imagine the amount of gut bacteria we all don't have due to the American cheeseburger and French fry diet that has persisted for so long. Anyway, food for thought. Thank you guys so much for your video and great attention to research and modern scientific literature. Dr. Mike has taught me so much in my new found love (3 months in) for weightlifting. Thank you!!
@CronksGenetics There is no such thing as an auto immune system. There is an immune system. And it is known if you have Hashimoto's autoimmune disease that eating gluten will increase the immune system's attack on the thyroid gland.
The real reason why you get more soreness out of carbs means your insulin and blood sugars up if not to the roof then through the roof, filling muscles with glycogen essentially (water) giving the fuller look just not actually muscle being added if your really get into how all this works metabolically in your body. In the long run this will just cause insulin resistance and dump yourself in a ditch and decrease your longevity even though you will be healthy you can feel healthier by going back to the carnivore diet mainly for health and how you feel benefits, even though you are metabolically ok due to age. Carbs are sugar in your body, and a lot of pro body builders have died or will end up F’ed up in the long run using insulin, if you need insulin due to excess carbs you are making yourself unhealthier by the day. And by the way the reason you feel your best on meat and saturated fat is because ketones are your bodies preferred energy not sugar (sugar is crack basically) if you want extra calories you can be friends with heavy cream and add 900 calories with a cup of heavy cream in a nice big morning Latte I do this myself in a big glass, a couple pumps sugar free vanilla syrup 1/4 cup coconut milk and a measuring cup of heavy cream then froth and a shot of expresso 👌 you also can do it without the coffee and just use the coffee if needing a laxative basically as it works as a soft laxative 😉
It should be points our that a zero carb diet contributes to relying on ldl for universal energy distribution that can lead to lean mass hyper response. My cholesterol was ldl being 6 times higher (10mmol/l ldl) but that was also after 8h cycling 🚴♀️ for a week. This might now correspond to necessarily to point by point cvd risk in this environment, or it might in fact mean even higher risk ; a study is underway how this affects LMHR ( lean mass hyper responders).

Dr Mike has very great knowledge, carbs can be very important for a balanced diet to be healthy but the most important thing is that you can stick to a diet that works for you and if it’s not working then change your diet
@@donewittit6607What he means is a person can survive and thrive on a meat only diet. Eating carbs is not essential for survival and good health. Your body can make the carbs it needs from protein.
On a low carb diet cortisol spikes higher and takes longer to normalize after just 20 min of exercise. This can be super detrimental to someone trying to reach health and fitness goals. Cortisol is catabolic so harder to gain muscle. Cortisol also drives insulin resistance which impedes on weight loss goals

Increasing bicep size by injecting insulin and eating excessive carbs is not creating new muscle tissue. It’s pumping fluids into the tissue on a constant basis. Creatine does not make the human body create a brand new muscle tissue. It helps to make the muscle look bigger and allow for lifting higher poundages. When one stops doing creatine and stops using insulin - the muscle will then shrink back down. I would think , the objective is to create brand new muscle tissue while maintaining & increasing muscle strength. No matter what the age.
‘Most published studies consider an increase in total mass of a muscle as hypertrophy, whereas a decrease in total mass of a muscle is referred to as atrophy.’
It's amazing how much misinformation is spreading out there. I guess it's not my body, so whatever. Kinda sad though to watch people destroy their longevity because they reject the overwhelming consensus for... something. What exactly that something is, I do not know.
The moderate insulin spike you get from protein alone is more than enough for all the muscle synthesis you need. Zero issues with doing carnivore for cutting or bulking, but if you do want to gain more fat with muscle then I would certainly recommend including carbohydrates!
In order to promote muscle growth you have to understand the entire process from start to finish. Muscle creation, or hypertrophy, starts with resistance exercises causing microscopic muscle damage. This triggers inflammation and activates satellite cells, specialized stem cells. These cells fuse with existing muscle fibers, leading to new myofibrils and muscle growth. Protein is essential for this process, providing amino acids for protein synthesis. Potassium, trace minerals, fat soluble, and B-vitamins are also essential and act as the cofactors that activate the enzymes that promote muscle growth. Carbohydrates main function in promoting muscle growth is only to fuel post-workouts and replenish glycogen, while healthy fats and micronutrients support overall muscle health. I would not recommend carbohydrates pre-workout or during your meals and would use them strictly for post-workout recovery. It is also important to note that to much protein can actually decrees muscle growth because your body can only absorb so much protein during the day. I would recommend 30% of your total calories to come from protein any more than this will just cause more damage on the liver and pancreas and could lead to your body using protein as its main fuel source. I would also like to point out that we don't need as many carbohydrates to promote muscle growth than what is advertised. Our body is able to produce and consume glucose from fat's in the form of gluconeogenesis. Don't get this confused with glyconeogenesis which is the break down of protein that get converted into glucose which is what I was just talking about earlier. If you consume higher fat-protein ratios and you have the right amount of nutrients to promote muscle cell growth you shouldn't ever need to worry about muscle loss.

27:17 Maybe if you had made progress for 5 years on a high-carb diet and then switched to a carnivore diet, you would have broken through the plateau as well? Maybe it wasn't the type of change that made you break through the plateau, but just the fact that you made a significant change by itself.
37:15 , No mainstream scientific establishment says that you can eat all meats and be very healthy. I'd love to see some citations for that claim though. Literally all the mainstream science establishments show plant dominant diets for long term health. They don't say you have to be vegan though.
I think he eats the carnivore diet because he's been taking massive amounts of growth hormone for years for his stunted growth and doesn't want insulin resistance. Just a hunch
Saying things like carbs are the preferred fuel source for x-thing is wrong. Just because the body metabolizes it first doesn't mean it prefers it. Does the body also prefer alcohol or any other poison just because it clears it out of the system first and as fast as possible? Of course not. IMO, carbs for the body are akin to an octane booster for a car. Sure, you get more bang, but it puts more stress on the engine. It is not preference. It is the body prioritizing the restoration of homeostasis.

@@Akbarkhaan_ I don't even know what point you're trying to make anymore - you're bringing up things completely unrelated to the point of discussion. Nowhere did I say he was not a freak or super strong - my comment applies to literally anyone, doesn't matter what their individual capabilities or natural strengths are - the fact is that you'll make tons of gains going through puberty (as you're essentially on natural steroids) and lifting, and you can eat literally any kind of food as long as there's some protein in the diet (ESPECIALLY if you're genetically gifted like he is or any other elite athletes, so you're actually supporting my point), therefore he probably would've made even more gains had he just eaten a diet consisting of more carbs and a wider, more diverse micronutrient profile (both because carbs are anabolic and to not feel like shit in lifting sessions like he said he did). On keto, you could very well do much better without carbs, because the carbs will cause brain fog--once you're fully adapted at 4-6 weeks of keto. (May change across years, because the body becomes accustomed to ketones, so csrb cycling *is* best of both worlds). That said, it seems strange to me that the introduction of carbs would cause an explosion of energy and pumps after so many years of carnivore. I had thought it was proven the body loses the ability to use carbs for explosive movements after too long on keto or carnivore. I would also wonder about placebo effect, and social reinforcement of "carbs good, meat bad". In addition, intermittent or prolonged fasting could generate very sharp cognitive function. I'd be careful with bodybuilder carb preference, IMO. I also get MASSIVE pumps somehow after eating pumpkin seeds pre-workout. Maybe the magnesium and arginine. I'm testing out a keto diet bulk with ~20 net carbs per day. I'm gaining .75-1 pound per week as a 5-6 year intermediate with a 280 pound bench as a 160 pounder. I.e., I'm trained and still getting good keto gains. Only 2 months keto (previous history of up to 2 years on keto, interspaces with carb refeeds to keep body aware csrbs exist). IMO, instead of jumping straight to carbs from carnivore, he should have just tried keto and pumping some heavy whipping cream, avocados, fibrous greens, and MCT oil for bulking. I'm hitting 3200 calories fairly easily with that method (and some tasty keto deserts). Still strong AF. Worst part is potential cramping due to electrolyte imbalances or deficiencies. Fuck that sucks. But, just make sure to drink the electrolytes pre-workout. This feels a bit too carb evangelical to me. Not sure there's enough data to really compare and contrast properly. Dude just straight up said he couldn't eat hypocalorically, so it's not a fair comparison, number 1. Also keto helps keep my PTSD under control, so that's a huge benefit to me. Significantly fewer instances of "omg everyone is trying to murder me," which is a definite plus. Even so, I still would love to see a comprehensive meta-analysis on keto bulking, carnivore bulking, and carb bulking. I doubt enough studies exist to justify the anti-keto/carnivore position aside from "bodybuilders would be doing it if it were the best." Maybe so, but I wonder.

Really refreshing to have experts who arent afraid to convey the benefits of an all plant-based diet. Too often in bodybuilding its meat meat meat despite the research not backing it.
@@hable7173 its more difficult than people think it is to get. For example, to get same amount of amino acids as 2 to 3 pounds of meat, you would need to consume an imposssible amount of plants in many different varieties, why? Because those amino acids are keylated and bound by anti compounds that make it very non bio available. This explains why people probably report best results when consuming 5+ grams of creatine from meat + the addition of low plant defense chemical fruits and carbs like fruits, honey, milk and the sort. Hope this info helped
You know to be honest Tristyn, I am worried about ur health. Keto increase ur ketones, ketones burn fat without moving, especially if ketones is ur main fuel source, then u proceed to carnivore diet and maintain 4% body fat, meaning u are too alkaline, it means U ARE BURNING FAT FROM KETO, AND THERES NOTHING ELSE TO BURN CUZ U ARE ON CARNIVORE. So what does the ketones do if there's no fat to be burned? it will attack ur cells. Did u know that keto diet, fasting, alkaline meals is the best treatment for cancer battling patients, cuz this meals are called cell killers which means if u are too alkalined ur cells will use retained body nutrients as a cellular energy, and if u don't have a retained nutrients u will have cell death, this is why cancer patients will benefit so much about being alkaline cuz its not just having cell death, it killing cancer cells too. This is why u are struggling to retain nutrients as much has u are struggling to gain weight.

The trick for me is 200 calories day deficit, going to bed early, cutting out breakfast and snacking on Air popped popcorn on weekends.

It may be the creatine

I'm a vegetarian and adding a creatine supplement woked wonders for me.
Creatine was certainly helpful for me in the pre-carnivore days but it came with an off side-effect I've never read about. Pain in places I hadn't had pain before, and that went away when I stopped taking it.

Think about what you’re saying? Mass moves mass for one, and increasing workout intensity stimulates hypertrophy
‘Most published studies consider an increase in total mass of a muscle as hypertrophy, whereas a decrease in total mass of a muscle is referred to as atrophy.’

Seems like the best option is to create a pro-carnivore UA-cam channel while eating a plant based diet.
So, you decide to take carbs again ?
If you consume higher fat-protein ratios and you have the right amount of nutrients to promote muscle cell growth you shouldn't ever need to worry about muscle loss.
better to use the carbs rather than having wasted protein for energy, cheaper too
I can’t find information on glyconeogenisis. Would you point me to some articles?

27:17 Maybe if you had made progress for 5 years on a high-carb diet and then switched to a carnivore diet, you would have broken through the plateau as well? Maybe it wasn't the type of change that made you break through the plateau, but just the fact that you made a significant change by itself.
37:15 , No mainstream scientific establishment says that you can eat all meats and be very healthy. I'd love to see some citations for that claim though. Literally all the mainstream science establishments show plant dominant diets for long term health. They don't say you have to be vegan though.

There isn’t really any solid studies on long-term carnivore diets. Eventually we will know if they help long term or not.
Carnivore workin just fine for me.
Possible that the soreness from carbs has something to do with the glycogen transfer process out of the muscle tissue from muscular exercise.
I think he eats the carnivore diet because he's been taking massive amounts of growth hormone for years for his stunted growth and doesn't want insulin resistance. Just a hunch
You'd be suprised how just eliminating starchy carbs completely and upping fats and only consuming carbs post workout helps
Your body makes glucose one way or another... Meaning that your body has to work harder to make the glucose rather than eating it directly. Come on man, think!
@@limitisillusion7 If that’s your logic, then why don’t you just inject insulin so your body doesn’t have to work harder to produce it? Come on, man. Think!

@limitisillusion7 The body's need for glucose is so little that we can readily produce it. Maybe you should use your brain instead.

You can be healthy on all meat and healthy on mostly vegetable matter but that's taken from people's averages. You can only know what works FOR YOU. I ate "healthy" for years with massive weights, joint, mood, energy and skin problems. They all went away of Carnivore. Keto didn't quite work but Ketovore worked perfectly and is sustainable for me. Meta, Fish, Eggs, Butter, Feta and Coffee. We need to experiment with our individual systems to find out what works FOR US. Experts and studies can only tell you what they found worked for people who aren't you and most of them had poor methodology and came into it trying to find one outcome or another. If Carnivore made you a physical specimen, why change?
all the gains from 13-18 could've been from pure puberty, and then gains stopped after puberty - Occam's razor is probably the case here. And carnivore probably hindered your size gains during all those years while a balanced diet would've made you even bigger.

I have. I've gained more muscle in the past 2 years, than I did from 12-21.
Why?
Because I was eating enough protein, and was in a calorie surplus.
You are delusional if you think puberty alone is responsible for growing that much muscle, and not his training...
The whole context of my comment is based on the discussion in the video which you seemed to not even have watched.
@@Akbarkhaan_you’re either trolling or actually autistic (in which case I apologize in advance). When I say “all the gains were from puberty” everyone can understand what I mean except you apparently - I mean regardless of diet type, he’d have had the same or similar or slightly better results had he stuck to a similar caloric intake and sufficient protein, simply due to puberty - any sane person seems to understand and agree with this concept. You’re so hung up on some out of context literal interpretation you’re imagining. And Carnivore absolutely does not have the most micronutrient absorption for human beings compared to actually eating a diversity of foods, now THAT’s stupid

You eat less on carnivore because you food is more nutritious and your appetite is not driven by insulin spikes. Also a high carbs diet promotes inflammation so much. This is why Doctor Mike thinks this guy is at peak health for his joints and connective tissue health. A standard American diet will only mess it up in the long term. Presentation targeted at muscle growth , not health at (19:00) we can all agree that with bodybuilder's health and life expectancy, it's maybe not a good idea to use their diet as a guideline. The brain may prefer glucose for energy, but it functions better on ketones. People wouldn't recommend not eating carbs for an academic test because they're still conditioned to use glucose.
