It is a huge, once in a couple generations urban project. They used the biggest tunnel boring machine in the world to put several lanes of traffic underground right on the waterfront, before tearing down the double decker highway. Because of the topography of the area, it is not possible to eliminate this north/south traffic route. This is not only the port for the largest ferry system in the world, but it is a popular tourist destination. I lived downtown, five blocks up, for years, leaving in 2019. I think a lot has been accomplished in spite of technical difficulties and a pandemic! You did not mention those glass pieces in the sidewalk. Those are to let light down into the water for the marine ecosystem. Don’t give up yet. A couple more years and it will be an amazing accomplishment for a city of this size.

A wonderful walk in our favorite places. We even saw the fish and chips line. We've always been very curious about what the post-Alaska Way space will look like.

Nice video. You mention all the "tons of concrete" as part of the Overlook Walk/Aquarium project, it's actually not what you see. There is building space beneath those stairs for the Aquarium equipment (tanks, pumps, etc..), and geo-foam. As for greenery, the project adds 100's of new trees, and large planters (which you can't see right now, but will be in place).

The Viaduct was also an earthquake hazard, the big quake in San Francisco in the late 80’s demonstrated that. There were a few freeways built the same way that collapsed on top of the lower deck, tragic.

$113 million Ocean Pavilion for the Seattle Aquarium, playgrounds, a new walkway from Pike Place Market to the waterfront, rerouted traffic patterns, pedestrian and bike paths, a new ferry terminal, piers large enough to hold concerts, a stormwater filtering system and rocky stretch of beach for people to sit. These is just some of the features of the new Waterfront.

I'll never get used to the view without the viaduct(and the free parking underneath).

  • @peterdorn5799

it was a double decker viaduct, part of this was replaced w/ a under ground tunnel below down town skyscrapers, with helps remove traffic from the surface street, viaduct was removed 2019

replaced the viaduct with a tunnel under downtown seatle & it's only been since 2019 that the viaduct was started to be removed, promenade has just started and will be nice, it's only been a 4 years for this mega project

Looking fwd to the cycle track, and hope the final produce involves a less car-centric outcome than what was in the past, and what it seems to be during construction.

They took a road you could go under, with a big road you need to go over. progress!

In Gran Turismo 2, there was a Seattle street circuit that went by the viaduct, smith tower and the stadium.

To begin with..i see a problem with the Colman dock terminal..if they had thought that well they would had planed an overpass for the ferry traffic in order to expedite traffic for everyone

redesign left too many lanes of traffic in each direction. would have loved to see even more green space/pedestrian space. let the cars take another route.
