Also got a female from the pound later in life and also was a great addition. We now live in an RV and just don't have the space or room for another one. Love these dogs with all our hearts.

10 is normal lifespan for a Rottweiler. All of mine have lived approximately that. They commonly develop some sort of cancer at the end of this period, but are normally healthy and disease free during their normal lifespan.
I’m on my second Rottweiler Thor and 3rd German shepherd Roxy. Only breeds I will ever own. They are simply the best family dog and guard dog. Great video!!
That history lesson was great man! I got my boy as a 15 month old, intact rescue early this year. We bonded at the first visit. He's smart but one serious knucklehead. He and my 2 yr old Dobermann make a great pair. Now that he's gotten in shape their energy is pretty much matched. I've always liked the breed through friend's dogs but he is my first. I'm on my 3rd Dobermann. Glad he came into our lives.
I've always through rotties and dobermann looked so much alike, besides bulkiness. One looks to be built for a work horse, and the other for sleek athleticism. Both gorgeous breeds.
1:20 The are such great cuddlers.I love how you can see how much they like to be touched in the face. They really enjoy it with people they trust and they always look for body contact even while sleeping.
I just got my 3rd rottie after my first two both passed last year at 12 years old. I love the breed. My new guy is a bundle of energy but I’m able to keep up with him. I’ve always done training but I will be doing some more advanced stuff with this one. Great video
I've owned Rotts my whole life and have nothing but love for the breed. But one thing to keep in mind is their desire to protect, if you have loud friends (we all know how they are) or children, then you know how they play, a lot of yelling and rough housing, sometimes the animal is confused about what is playing and what is hurting their human and will react with dominant aggression against what they perceived as an attack. They are extremely strong dogs and if you have never owned one before, I highly recommend you learn as much as possible about how to properly keep them. There's nothing worse than a beautiful rottweiler having to be put down because its owner wasn't responsible enough to learn how to handle it.
I love this breed spotlight type of videos! Hope we get more of these 👍🏻 I would personally love to see some of these about popular scent hounds breeds.
Love this type of content, very informative in all ways and entertaining to watch. I have a young Rottie as (almost) first dog and gotta say he was very easy to train in every single way.
My big girl just turned 10 months, I got her at 11 weeks, what an amazing experience. Smart, loyal, and a worker. She loves kids and other dogs. I have a 5 year old white GS male and they are the best of friends. I find the Rottweiler to have more explosive, short burst energy and the GS to have a larger gas tank, more sustained energy, but with less burst.
Currently on my 3rd and 4th Rottweilers and the first time I've owned two at once and #4 is my first ever male. All went through basic obedience group classes and that was enough for the females. My Deebo was exhibiting resource guarding of me so we sent him away for 3 weeks in board and train and he's become such an amazing member of the family. They are so loyal, so protective and 100% goofballs.
Concerning tails and ears. We used to cut them in Germany too. And then in 1985 the practice was forbidden by law on the grounds of animal welfare concerns. So if you want a dog with cropped ears or tail you have to go somewhere outside Germany to get the procedure done.
I had rotties back in the later '90s until mid 2000s that were offspring of German imports with schutzhund titles. Idk about these days, but at that time, German rotties had to pass inspection for conformation, temperment and basic obedience in order to be accepted into breeding registry. They also had to have hips/elbows OFA rated. Tail docking has a practical purpose for herding dogs and I must confess, a rottie doesn't look right to me with a tail. Far superior in every way to American rotties based upon the ones I saw and I was blessed to have mine. ❤
i fell in love with Rottweilers in my early twenties at college...i raised a runt female 82lbs...fell in love...she was great with kids(all kids) she saved me when someone tried to come at me to punch me(i never attack trained her)....since then i have been lucky to have 3 other rottie females..in my experience they are fantastic family dogs, great with kids(must be raised properly of course) we have a male puppy now...they are completely different....IMO harder to train...but to me this is a fantastic breed for families(especially if you have a nice yard) thanks for the video
In my opinion they are the best breed, they do everything.....from being a family pet and great with kids to a guard dog who will protect you and your family and also your family home, just an amazing breed,i have 2 and they are just amazing
I love the Rottweiler they're so sweet. I have a Rottweiler Beagle he's the best dog I've ever had. Definitely can be stubborn though. My boy is my service dog it took so long to get him to focus but I got him to the point where he can ignore all distractions even when pet dogs come up to him he is focused on me. Once you get them to where you want them they're so amazing.
We have had 2 & never had any issues or problems. They were great w/ the kids. Only issue was when it came to eating or drinking ~ 1/2 usually ended up on the floor. Rottweilers & Great Danes are my 2 favorite breeds.
Me and my have raised rots for 30 years love them very good and smart. Never have had to whip just change the sound over the way I talk to them. There just like a child teach them to respect your command.
I had a male rottweiler for 10 years. Only one time did he ever hear fear in my voice (I was startled by the unexpected presence of small group late at night as we rounded a corner), he immediately started growling, and all I had to do was say, "it's ok, we're all right" and his aggression immediately stopped. Coolest dog I ever had. GREAT protector.
My Rottie mix is a real drama queen! She tells me what she wants with various woo woos, cries, grumbles and barks. She is obedient, smart, and happy. She isn't cuddly, but has to be near me constantly. I have had 5 German Shepherds over the years raising my kids, but now that I'm retired and the kids are raising their own families, I can't keep an active GSD happy, so the Rottie is better for me. Training - every day and consistent for the last 6 years. I train my Rottie the same way I trained the GSDs. It's not a one and done process, it is life long positive reinforcement. I'm nearing 70 and only 5 ft tall, but I'm the boss and my dog appreciates it!
Our boy Bowser is such an amazing dog. He just over a year old weighing in around 110 right now. He’s a massive dog but he is so good with my kids 5 and 3 years of age. We have a friend with a 9 month old baby and when they come over to visit Bowser will follow that 9 month old baby everywhere she goes protecting her from all the other kids running around. He is also great with other dogs. Absolutely love the Rottweiler. We had an amazing German shepherd as our last dog and I loved that dog so much but I prefer the Rottweiler due to the fact it needs less exercise and less energy. The German shepherd is a very smart and rewarding dog breed to own but they definitely require more of your time than the Rottweiler.
I was nervous about getting a rott for the first time. I haven't looked back since. Every dog since has been a Rott. I loved them all, and miss them all.
I have an APBT Mix with a German Rottweiler, big boy. His name is osito or Lil bear in English. Lots of muscle, smart, high prey drive and loyal. When he passes away I will definitely get a Rottweiler
That was a stellar overview of the breed, sir! I could not disagree with any of the points you made. They were all spot on! I am no expert, but I have had a total 3 of this breed spanning over the past 20 years and absolutely love them. Anyone who happens to read this comment can be sure that every point that this man made is accurate. I went over and hugged my Rottweiler after watching this video Cheers
Growing up i had great danes and pit bulls, so they were always my 2 favorite breeds. i currently have my first rottweiler and will probably never have another breed of dog.
Our rottie was an absolute softy. If someone knocked at the door, she'd bark aggressively and jump up 2 feet off the ground. As soon you were let through the door, she'd lick you and instantly switch off. The only time she ever growled at someone, was once when the neighbour tried to touch "her" pet cat, who was talking past him in the backyard. Her and the cat would always snuggle up together and take turns at licking each other clean. The cat was slightly drowned each time.
Traditionally Rottweilers in Germany were also docked, but then it got outlawed for cruelty reasons. The same goes for cropping that used to be Standardformat certain breeds like the Dobermann. Thor is a beautiful dog. What I love about him is that his head is not supermassive like it is so often the case with Rottweilers. It looks so much better!
Not even a question, getting a Rottweiler was the second best decision i've made (the first was getting a German Shepard). Also I believe "tail docking" is stupid but thats just my opinion
Docking is not stupid. It's controversial yes but a rottweiler has a very thin/long tail for the size of dog it is and has a very high chance of breaking their tail and needing a amputation, Which is way worse!
Pub I was a regular in had a friendly Rottweiler, when he was allowed out all he wanted was to wander around the drinkers for some head scritches & maybe a beer mat to sit in the corner to chew. I do remember two blokes tried to get in the living area upstairs & got a surprise once they broke the door open, they came running through the pub with a barking snarling Rottweiler chasing them away, the Rottweiler then sat down at the open pub door continuing to bark watching them run away down the street.
Cutting dogs tail is like cutting his tongue. They express a lot through their tails with other animals. It s a communication tool .Besides the tail is linked with brain nerves. It's very sensitive. Dogs tails are not only aesthetic as a matter of fact. That's why in Europe taking in consideration this knowledge cutting tails is no longer that popular at least among those who have the knowledge
@@JadeaRS4 dude I’m not some positive reinforcement leftist so no need for arrogance here. Come over and educate top German Rottweiler breeders and the ADRK as they are all apparently mistaken
I used to have a German Shepherd /Rott mix. He had the rust coloring everywhere a purebred Rott normally has, including the eyebrows. Absolutely wonderful dog.
I had a Labrador Rotty mixed breed fantastic house dog and protective of my family. Even though he is mine he does what my wife tells him. But then again i am well trained by wife as well.😉😉😉😉😉.
Rotties are such awesome dogs. Mine was atypical with the slightly longer fur and she was the worst guard dog on the planet. She was a perfect family dog. My daughters were teenagers and she was great with their friends. She was one of the kids.
Previous life - very involved with humane society, so all of my dogs have been rescued from bad situations. I have had one Rottweiler, rescued as a puppy. Generally I agree with your analysis of the breed. My experience was that Marie was great with small children and just anybody. I knew Marie, so when we encountered children while walking in a park, I concentrated on the kid's behaviòrr. I had a lot of fun with that dog. She died in 2006 of soft tissue sarcoma. I really tried to save her, even taking her to a human dermatologist who treated Rottweilers for this. When only suffering was left, well... i miss her to this day.
I am grateful my kids first dog is a Rottie. She has had a tough road health wise, but she still loves life. I give the Rott a 11/10. I have only known them to be the smartest, most loyal dogs around.
My favourite dog since childhood, now I'm a proud owner of a Rokita pup (Rotti cross Akita) he's an absolute beauty and gentle with my kids. I love your videos and eager to start our DIYK9 trainings
Getting a rottie mix soon. Obviously being a mix will throw the temperament but I’m very excited about this puppy as I know both parents and they are both amazing dogs. Rottie mother, golden retriever/collie father. Excited to use some of the tricks I’ve seen from this channel to help make him an amazing dog.
best video i've seen so far on the amazing Rottweiler!! I love my 2 1/2 year old male Zeus. He is so smart, loyal, protector, i trained him personally since 7 weeks old. But he has to know who is boss, dad is center of his world. I own his soul, his bite and his love. It a super symbiotic relationship.
@@Plife-507my rottie turned 2 in April and he’s a bit sturbborn. Any tips? He’s not neutered. I don’t plan on neutering him. He’s my sweet goofy boy but is very reactive. We’re working on this. Thanks in advance. 😊
In Europe people used to dock their tails, cuz they were originally multi purpose dogs, for guarding, herding and pulling carts, but nowadays it's forbidden to dock tails or even ears in most european countries, people started to consider it unnecessary and it is said that a dog with docked tails or ears has less ways of communicating wity other dogs or even with people. Greetings from Europe, I love you channel, I want to get a rottweiler and I needed this video! I get to know whatever I need to know because I want to be a resposible owner 😀
We have had five females over the years all raised as family . Like people they are all different to some extent. I agree with your views on them. They love their families. They want to be with you all the time. They are not for an owner who is going to leave them chained up outside. Socialization is important. Ours get walked twice a day, gets play time with other dogs in our neighborhood she knows at the beach each morning, and during the work week my kids dogs are at our house so she plays with them as well. Summers can be tough so we set up a sprinkler which she loves and a pool she can splash around in. We also do agility work with her too. Finally you need to be the pack leader .
soo adorable! I have a 150lb Rott., protective of my home, playful and goofy with my kids, very loyal to me and yes i have had to give him a boost into my car and our jogs are very short because like you said, they are not super athletic and just BIG and BADAzs dogs
As a proud owner of excellent, loyal, devoted, loving, goofy, absolutely fearless, extremely protective and outrageously working 55 kg male Rottweiler, I give this breed biased 10 out of 10.
An American Akita video would amazing to have. I don't believe I've ever seen Garrett do one on that particular breed and as an owner I'd be really interested to have his input and views.
I’ve had three and they were all WONDERFUL dogs! Love the breed! The only problem is bad owners make having them in a lot of communities now is sometimes difficult.
My friend used to have a rottie. She was such a sweetheart. First time I met her, I was honestly scared cuz she was barking like crazy and I was young and she was huge! But the moment she smelled me and checked me out, she was such a love bug. Some years after that, my friend, his brother, and I went to a park and he had me hold her leash. These guys were playing basketball and they lost the ball and it went right over my head and one of the guys was running towards me. But to her, she saw a threat and omg. I have never seen her snarl and show her teeth like she did! I apologized and got the ball for them. She sadly died some years ago from natural causes. I miss that big cuddly girl
With as many GSDs as Garret's dad and stepmom and he had as police K9 handlers, I'm sure that will be a thorough and interesting video too. Our GSD mutt rescue was my favorite dog ever. It knew a threat when it was present and knew when to just chill out and relax. From the day we brought out newborn daughter home she would ALWAYS come to our room and sleep in her open crate, but she never came to bed without at least walking into and around our daughter's room to be sure everything was safe and secure. I wish I'd have had Garret's full slew of courses when Shasta came home with us. She was easy to train, exceptionally intelligent, and so playful and gentle with our daughter and any kids around.
I'd say the most memorable film with a Rottweiler was The Omen with Gregory Peck (mid-70's). Here, the Rottie played 'Satans Hound' and made a lot of people fear them for years... 😮
Loved this video. Going on 8 months, but goofy boy shows me everyday the potential he has to be an amazing dog. Can't wait for his training program to start next year 🙌🏾
Thank u so much for this video, I really appreciate it. I have been looking into this dog for a while and this video is just what I needed, I would recommend it to anyone looking into this breed.
You forgot the most iconic film featuring the Rott.......The Omen (1976). For most people ( especially in the U.S.) was there first time seeing this great dog breed in the film.

Thank you for educating with this video!! I have a 3yr old Rottweiler now and he's great!! I've learned that training is key. My past Rotts have also been great, the only thing is that I have found that health conditions are more prevalent. My guy unfortunately was diagnosed with PLE, which with my vet have been able to put him in remission. I also have 2 Czech Shepherds and a Malinois X, by far it has been easier to train my Rottweiler. The stubbornness is real!! So I will be checking out your continuing training videos.
I’ve had many Labs and now have a Rottie who was the easiest dog to train I have ever had. She is my best friend and better behaved that most of the adults I know. ADVICE: train early and often. They love to work. Call Brian Lee (way of the dog ) He makes it simple and your Rottie will be the best friend you’ll ever have
The Omen movie. Really enjoy the breed. I kid that a Shepard on steroids. Got into working with them, accidentally when a 6 month male, went thru a picture window after the mailman. Thankfully the mailman was almost in the vehicle. Then one evening I got a call from distant acquaintances, telling me that their 8 month old male, would not let the family out of the kitchen. Weird. Both dogs turned out fine. Great dogs in my humble opinion. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

I'm curious about scent hounds too, especially the Bloodhound, since those have been used so much by police to find missing persons.
You have the best training videos. I have a 10 month old Rottweiler and it’s awesome seeing you training one
Check out DIYK9.com. Garret has a FREE 4-hour course on dog training. When you're done you'll know more about dog training than 99% of dog owners.
The most comprehensive video on Rottweiler. Thank you.
You're very welcome!
Cruel
i fell in love with Rottweilers in my early twenties at college...i raised a runt female 82lbs...fell in love...she was great with kids(all kids) she saved me when someone tried to come at me to punch me(i never attack trained her)....since then i have been lucky to have 3 other rottie females..in my experience they are fantastic family dogs, great with kids(must be raised properly of course) we have a male puppy now...they are completely different....IMO harder to train...but to me this is a fantastic breed for families(especially if you have a nice yard) thanks for the video
I love Rottweilers! They are my favorite dogs!!!!
And I love that you explicitly state that this scoring system is a bias.
I have an almost 14 year old Rott mix. He's the best dog I've ever had. Still working on my Cane Corso pup, she's an entirely different animal 😮
In my opinion they are the best breed, they do everything.....from being a family pet and great with kids to a guard dog who will protect you and your family and also your family home, just an amazing breed,i have 2 and they are just amazing
PERFECT TIMING. Literally looking through your channel for this exact vid. I’m in contact with some great breeders who’ve got some German Rottweiler
Enjoy!
I have a Rottweiler and catahoula mix. He’s basically a spotted Rottweiler with one blue eye. Absolute unit, love bucket and bestest boy!
I absolutely love my 2 Rottweilers! Thank you for the video!
I have a farm in Belize and our guard dogs are Rottweiler/German Shepherd mixes. That is an absolutely amazing Cross.
I have a Great Dane, Tank, the best friend I’ve ever had, thank you for the information! I couldn’t be more grateful!
Our pleasure!
We love our Daisy! Beautiful rotty!
I was nervous about getting a rott for the first time. I haven't looked back since. Every dog since has been a Rott. I loved them all, and miss them all.
I would love a properly trained Rottweiler when my wife retires and I am at work. Wonderful animal!
Love my rottie I also have an American bully but I love how my rottie stays on patrol no matter what 24/7
I have an APBT Mix with a German Rottweiler, big boy.
I went over and hugged my Rottweiler after watching this video
Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the comment!
Growing up i had great danes and pit bulls, so they were always my 2 favorite breeds. i currently have my first rottweiler and will probably never have another breed of dog.
Yeah they’re just different man
Our rottie was an absolute softy.
I love this guy’s humor 😂 And the way adorable Thor kept flopping down to the floor 😂❤
Not even a question, getting a Rottweiler was the second best decision i've made (the first was getting a German Shepard). Also I believe "tail docking" is stupid but thats just my opinion
Did they get along well? We have a 3 year old GS & my husband wants to add a Rottweiler next year.
@@mswarren112 Hmm well they did but they're all female, I dont know what would happen if they were different sexes
We have a Rottie and a GSD. The former is 5 years younger and thinks he's the boss. Harlo kicks his ass when he needs to.
I agree with you on docking dog`s tails. Also to me dogs ears should not be cropped either just leave the dog`s as they are meant to be.
Yep, tail docking isn’t just unpopular, the prohibition enforced in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Norway, Finland, UK and many more
If you had any knowledge about this breed than you would understand why tail docking still happens. Read!
The reason why you don’t see a Rottweiler with its tail cut in Germany is because that is forbidden here.
Thanks for the comment and we look forward to seeing you in the courses!
DIYK9.com has your training needs covered as well, everything from puppy training to off-leash obedience.
I have had a rotti in my house for 30 years. Best breed ever.
Sounds very similar to Cane Corsos. Rotties are gorgeous.
This guy is the best trainer.
best video i've seen so far on the amazing Rottweiler!! I love my 2 1/2 year old male Zeus. He is so smart, loyal, protector, i trained him personally since 7 weeks old. But he has to know who is boss, dad is center of his world. I own his soul, his bite and his love. It a super symbiotic relationship.
Glad you enjoyed the video and are enjoying Zeus!
@AmericanStandardK9 thanks man!! You are my hero. I've learned a lot from your channel
@@Plife-507my rottie turned 2 in April and he’s a bit sturbborn. Any tips? He’s not neutered. I don’t plan on neutering him. He’s my sweet goofy boy but is very reactive. We’re working on this. Thanks in advance. 😊
Great video!! Very thorough but I disagree Rotties are 110/100. They are the most amazing creature on the planet. Bar None, nothing compares
Not everyone should own one. I hope you're one that can handle it.
Are Akita’s not stubborn as hell 😂
I have a half Rottweiler/half pitbull, and she is the absolute best!!!! Love your videos!!!
How dog aggressive is she? I like both breeds and really like the mix.
Watching this while cuddling with my 1 year old rotty who’s the most perfect angel😂
I have a 5 month old male Rottie now. We love him so much. Training is going really good. 😁
I have a GSD/Rottie mix (more like a rott in a GSD body) and this video explained a lot and was a great watch. Keep doing this series please!
Great vid! Can u do an updated vid on GSDs? Love your stuff. Helped my relationship with my dog a lot.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
My 5yr old female passed a couple months ago and I miss her dearly, best dog I've ever had by a long shot. Taken too soon.
I miss my Rottweiler Xena Awesome dog to have
You forgot the most iconic film featuring the Rott.......The Omen (1976). For most people ( especially in the U.S.) was there first time seeing this great dog breed in the film.

I owned the most beautiful Rottweiler ever 31.5 inches at the shoulder 5 foot 6 standing love you Zack big red rotty no contest❤❤❤❤
I miss my rottie pupper he was my best friend 😢
finally! I’ve been waiting for this
This makes me want to get a rottweiler i am definitely getting one in the future but for now sticking with my toy poodle😂
Great information as always. I liked how you had Mr. Fayhey RIP showing drunk Uncle Jeff...now I want a rottie. But I need a medium dog. My beautiful, loving CC died recently. It was June but feels recent.
I JUST GOT MY ROTTIE 3 months ago perfect timing(2year old rescue) training has been a breeze compared to my 6 year old husky akita mix i got last year(now 6 year old rescue) your videos helped a ton and i love my relationship w my boys, need to drop the money on the two pack educator haha
My dogs walk and sleep beside my bed, huskita on the left and rottie on the right always💯
He also eats twice as much as his big brother huskita haha
He loves to listen though, best trained dog potential tbh!
Thanks for watching, we're happy you're finding the videos helpful!
Been waiting patiently for this. Thank you!
Enjoy!
A very good and comprehensive video, from the history to health issue, and in between the history from Roman Empire to 19th century Germany.
Great video! Good humor! For me the Rottweiler is 100 points 😉
You're welcome, thanks for the comment!
Do an Akita Inou Video I have mine wich i love and i want to see more out of the breed i think it would be a very interesting video!
