I find it funny that he doesn't know why the pencil statue was an octopus statue in Japan, given that he's the one who narrated that episode of Did You Know Gaming.
Apparently it's something to do with one of the designers describing mental processes. Something to the tune of "when you're trying to figure out a problem, it can feel like there's an octopus inside your head", IIRC.

I gotta be honest, that was years ago and I can't bring myself to watch that video again, hahaha... I wasn't at all good at scripting back then.

You can also heal Teddy Bears by doing anything that fully heals the party, such as sleeping or visiting Your Sanctuaries.
Also, the statue was changed for the sake of the “Eraser Eraser” joke.

The problem with condiments (aside from taking an inventory slot) isn't that "Why don't you just use a second burger" but that it's not optional. It doesn't ASK "Do you want to use the ketchup," it just does it, so it can be easily wasted. If it was optional, then it would be meaningful. The advantage of using Burger + Ketchup instead of Burger + Burger is that it only takes one action in combat. Sure you can just use two burgers, but that takes two turns!

Also, I'm pretty sure the Pencil Eraser segment was meant to be a commentary on puzzles in JRPGs at the time that made absolutely no sense until you speak to an otherwise inconsequential NPC; typically backtracking along the way. It's a trope you don't see nearly as much these days; which is probably why it threw a lot of contemporary players a curveball.
Back when I played this game on an emulator (don't judge, we all know everyone has done that) I also got stumped by the Pencil Statue back then. Now that I've watched this whole series (even back when it was happening) I now know how to progress. You know, once I either buy the game myself with enough money or just wait until they release it on the SNES service for Nintendo Switch Online members, or I'll bite the dust and play on emulator again if the latter never ends up happening ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wow it has been so long since I have come to chuggas channel, I remember when I was about 9 years old I first found it back in 2010 and I watched it almost religiously up until I got into high school. It's awesome to see him still at it and I am really excited to watch him play earthbound all over again! He has made such a huge impact on my life inspiring me to dabble in recording technology and that lead to me becoming a broadcasting engineer so I honestly cannot thank this man enough for the impact he has had on my life. I remember I even sent him a message on UA-cam back in the day asking what equipment he used to record his videos and proceeding to ask for only those things for Christmas, so thanks chugga for everything even responding to my message back then and blowing my little kid mind haha.
This comment is blessed! I had a pretty similar experience. Emile was one of the first UA-camrs I watched consistently and to this day he inspires me to continue into filmmaking and recording tech, as you've said.
In my opinion chugga even though he doesn't often reply to video comments he always strives to make sure his audience gets to dip their those in the water. In my opinion UA-cam is like a a concert if you're not gonna take advantage of the fact that you have a fan base and an audience why do it at all. When I was younger I messaged him because I was going through a lot of things and I had messaged chugga who I had and still do look up to and I still remember what he said to this day "Don't let every bad thing get you down because things will always get better... It means a lot to me that you look up to me that much that you would go out of your way to ask 'me' for help even though I just record videos for the sake of entertainment. Just remember that everything might be bad now, but all problems get better with time and a little work, so don't give up!"
He inspired me to start my own UA-cam channel and be open-minded when it comes to gaming. Sure, not as much impact as what you guys had, but he impacts us all in different was. Bless you, Emile.

No no. That's what replaces the Eraser Statue.
The reason why its an octopus is because of an old Japanese saying. If you are having trouble of thinking of anything with your mind its as if an octopus has spread its tentacles and is clogging the way.
No, you're thinking of a later obstacle in the Japanese version, the Iron Kokeshi. "Eraser" in Japanese is "keshi", meaning you'd need a Kokeshi Keshi to erase the Kokeshi. For obvious reasons, the Iron Kokeshi was changed to an Iron Eraser in localization.
I think for us its a pencil because of the saying writer's block.

Actually I think it's because of the wordplay with "pencil eraser" like the eraser on a pencil, except it's a literal *pencil* eraser that erases pencils.

Im pretty sure they changed the octopus statue since in japanese the way you get rid of it is supposed to be a pun that is lost in translation,so there was no reason to keep it like that.
I’ve beaten mother 2/Earthbound at least 10 times at least once on each system (snes, Wii u, 3DS, snes mini, even iPhone emulators lol) and I’m learning new things about this game almost every episode, a game I thought I knew almost everything about. You’ve always been a great let’s player man cheers on 10 years!

Advantage Mother 1 has over 2 and 3: You equip an item when just simply hitting "use". But when you equip it, it removes the item from your inventory and moves it to the "equipment" section. Deterioration in Mother 2 if I ever saw it.
Mother 4 will be a prequel to Earthbound, telling the story of how that lady had saved the world with a different Sound Stone.
I absolutely love the number/order puns in the town names, really charming and well thought out!

The funny thing is and one of his earlier episodes he was talking about how the bag of fries and was really uncommon to get from the sharks but on almost the first shark that I went up against in earthbound gave me a bag of fries
Honestly, I feel the For Sale Sign is heavily underappreciated for what it does and for me, it's one of the things I carry on me at all times. Because Earthbound's biggest problem is inventory space, the For Sale Sign singlehandedly takes care of the game's biggest problem by letting you get rid of items whenever you're out in a dungeon since most dungeons have items you probably won't use and it's great for giving you extra inventory space whenever you need room for more items. And yes, like the mistake that happened in front of the Pencil statue, it works literally everywhere.
Converting unwanted items into cash is better then just throwing them away.

A few years late, but your double teddy bear strategy helped me out a whole lot. At first I didn’t think of doing that, I just wanted to get to the next area, but I kept dying. Coincidentally, I was on this part when I got to that area anyway. Lol. Point is, it actually helped me. thanks for that strategy idea.

The For Sale Sign can actually be really useful when used correctly. Instead of throwing stuff away you can earn some extra bucks and keep needed healing items intact. Plus is funny to use it in places no people would otherwise visit. I always buy it and keep it with me during all the adventure. Never regreted it.

Yeah the statue part is when I got stuck and stopped playing for like a year. I ended up starting a new playthrough the other day, and when I got to that part I had to look up a walkthrough for that one thing. I did get past it and am enjoying the game a whole lot more now. I am at the third town and made it to the part with the third party member, who I named Jake, after my brother. I REALLY like him so far. He plays really cool.

This is the point in the original l.p. I started watching been watching ever since
you know I don't really have a major issue with the pencil eraser part, like if I got up to the pencil my first instinct would be to go back to town to see if I missed anything, at which point (if I somehow wouldn't have already done it) I would invest with apple kid and orange kid as well eventually. Hell, you showed that when you leave peaceful rest valley apple kid even rings you to tell you about the invention, which you will see considering the only way you can go at that point is back to town where you will receive the phone call.
I'm not trying to say it's perfect or anything, it is essentially filler to go see the pencil then have to come back rather than him just giving you the pencil eraser straight up , but what i'm trying to say is i doubt I would have been stuck at that point for very long, even as a kid.
New Gameplay Ideas!
Condiments as a Separate Menu: Condiments in this game are obnoxious to use. Well, we properly see actual use of it at a later time, but how you use condiments is based on party member inventory and the arrangement of condiments in the bag. But take this into account: if you try and eat food, an extra menu should appear to select the condiment you would like to use. That way, you are guaranteed to get the food item's boosted effect if a perfect match is made.
Emile says he doesn’t know why they changed it from an octopus to a pencil even though I’m pretty sure he’s explained in a previous LP or even in the Did You Know Gaming episode of EarthBound why it’s an octopus.
