i actually disagree with your assessment; if you take a deeper look; Ken is more of the talker and he will cut Bill off from time to time. Bill is inherently the better active listener by nature. And this is Bill's idea so he's also the host or the interviewer so he's less inclined to give his opinion and its mostly for Ken to share his knowledge.

that's what happens when you speak with facts or about personal preference. a lot of people tend to speak about politics bassed on lies or take someone else's opinion as fact. you can't have an good educated chat when either one side or both sides are bassed on lies.
@OP I would dissent on the interruption point because Ken does tend to cut Bill off frequently. However, it isn’t a lecture by any means from either man. It’s a proper conversation. I also like the fact that they are not merely mutually agreeing on every single point. Different opinions help the learning/educated viewer immensely. Love listening to these Wilson-Hackthorn chats & of course, Mass Ayoob with either.

I love my Colt Commander, it was my mothers when she passed she left it to me. The pistol will consistently put 230 gr ball ammo inside a playing card at 25 yards. I own 3 1911's but my mother's Commander is my EDC and always will be.
You really might wanna stick to keeping any heirloom guns as range guns/ collectibles.
The only reason why I say that is because in the aftermath of a defensive shooting, the cops will likely impound and book any gun that you shot your attacker with into evidence till the shooting has been ruled as a clean shoot. If you get your gun back, great, but you might not get it back in good condition. In some places they might not give you that gun back at all.
Personally I’d be heartbroken(I’m sure my grandpa would too) if I got any of my grandpa’s guns that he passed on to me impounded in the aftermath of a defensive shooting and I never got em back.
A buddy of mine has a Commander still in the evidence bag, as he got it from the police. Blood still eating away at the metal. :^(
@@johnnypranin5874 but if you defensive kill someone with your fists, the police don't cut off your hand and keep it as evidence? Why do they do that with guns?
@@teacopem Well, if you put yourself in the shoes of the responding cops, they don't know all the details yet. When they arrive to investigate the aftermath of a defensive shoot, all they know at this point is: there's been a shooting and the shooter is claiming self defense. They're not yet sure who the good guys and bad guys are. They're also not yet sure whether or not you were justified in shooting your attacker. So they'll likely take your gun in for evidence while they sort out the case.
This is why for self defense, you should stick to using guns that won't break your heart if they ever got impounded and never returned to you. Having a legal defense program to cover you in the aftermath (Self Defense Fund in my case) might help you get your gun back, but it's not guaranteed at all. But I'd say sign up still!

I carry a fullsize every day iwb in florida. I use paste wax, specifically mold release wax that i had from work. Its very hard to resist chemicals. 4 or 5 coats and dont remove much between coats and it lasts a few months. No oil i have found lasts. It rusts between the grip and the back strap and front strap, the little strip of exposed steel where it contacts my body. The pits that are there were all there before using wax.

A Wilson is on the bucket list
I’ve been carrying an older Springfield armory XD sub compact in 40 caliber for a couple years. About the beginning of this month I held and 1911 for the first time. I didn’t even pull the trigger and I almost traded my Springfield on the spot for it. The only reason I didn’t is because I know my Springfield works every time I pull the trigger and being my only handgun I’m not willing to trade it off on something that I know nothing about the history of especially being a used gun. I figure in a few months I’ll probably own a 1911. I think I want something fairly bare bones that I can change as I see fit as I go
A Springfield XD 40 is the only gun I've ever fired and absolutely hated... almost anything else would be an upgrade from that.

Mr. Hackathorn is impressivly honest regarding his shooting precision due to age and sight issues. I like two element low light sights like the old King Tappan sights. Carried those on a Commander for nearly 25 years.

I agree!!! I had 20/13 vision when younger now I can't see the sights very clearly without glasses due to astigmatism, but I can still achieve combat accuracy without glasses, but with my glasses the groups are cut to half or less
I gave the vid a thumbs up. In a number of your vids you guys talk about ammo relative to function/malfunctioning of the gun. It would a good and well appreciated video if you would bring in some various examples of ammo - and show them up close - showing bullet shapes, OAL examples, etc and talk about the hows whys and wherefores with regard to feeding problems. Do this with both 45acp and 9mm - use ball, hollow points, xtp, brass case, aluminum case, steel case etc.
I don't buy the cheapest stuff out there myself. I absolutely insist upon brass case to begin with. NO STEEL and I have only shot aluminum case because someone gave it to me as a gift.

I love my colt 1911 govt with flat main spring, basic 3 white dot sights, short pad trigger, commander hammer over a short beavertail, 18.5lb recoil spring, shooting mostly 230gr +P ammo and she groups a hockey puck at 25 yds pretty easily. Colt makes a great pistol still. You pay for it definitely... But its consistent quality!

Just get a Wilson, and forget about needing to mod it. My 2003 Protector is an out the box custom beast. Carried in on police duty for 6 years and thousands of rounds and ZERO failures. Big $$$ but I have never regretted my purchase. Always ALWAYS Wilson mags. Period.

Winchester white box 230 gr FMJ. I have a full box of military 45 ACP ammo made by Lake City Arsenal dated 1968. The bullet is the same size and shape as the Winchester 230 gr FMJ. Matter of fact Winchester makes a lot of ammo for military and police .
John Moses Browning designed the 1911 series around the 230gr FMJ bullet. Some cadre & cops toted 230gr FMJs or a JHP load for most of the 1900s. ✔. In the 2010s, the 230gr JHP is still fine. Wilson suggests the 230gr standard pressure FMJ load for practice. As does gunsmith, SWAT cop Dave Lauck. 🚔.
1:00 well if you cant shoot well with an inferior trigger, the sights wont mtter much. bc even if do upgrade sights and shoot with inferior trigger, it could negate the sights.
I'm with Mr. Hackathorn on the ambi safety hitting my trigger finger, but I still like an ambi safety, I just like the right side to be standard size or smaller. To get that set up from Wilson Combat, I have had to buy two ambi safeties, one extended and one standard, and mix the parts. That works great, but it's an expensive way to do it. It would be nice if you guys sold one set up that way... :-)
I put a curved mainspring housing on mine. For a carry gun, I'd prefer either a Series 80 or a titanium firing pin.
I liked this video, very informative. W.C. is a perfomace standard in the industry that exceeds kimber, colt and pretty much all others. Your parts made the older Colts far more reliable. Your mags are top of the line. One thing I don't get is why the coments on these videos never show up. All other video coments are readable. Are coments on your videos so private or bad that W.C. doesn't want the public to see them?

I carried a striker then a DA/SA Pistol once I shot and felt the trigger on a 1911 I never went back. I carry a full size 1911 now. CCW.

After my 40 plus years with 1911s my list is:
MUST: 1) 100%Reliably!!!!!!
2) Wilson Combat 47D 8round mags ONLY!!!!!
3) Ed Brown Memory Groove Beavertail Grip Safety
4) Clean, crisp CONSISTANT trigger
5) Good sights. Wide rear notch, skinny front post!!!!
WANTS: Checkered front strap, Checkered mainspring housing, DECENT cocking serrations, love flat tops, like serrated tops, mag well, grippy grip panels.
I can use skateboard tape for checkering have for years on many guns, especially USPSA/IPSC guns.
Really like a pic rail to mount a light!!
I agree about the Wilson 47D mags, but try the Tripp Cobra mags.
My 1911 ACP is a hobbled together Essex. I did not build it, but it has never had a problem shooting. Except for the time I used crappy surplus magazines. Then it would jam up often. Switched to good magazines and never another problem. It's the accuracy that needs a tweak. The grouping is not so good. The pistol is really pretty old and has been shot a lot, not much finish left, perhaps the Springfield barrel is done. I'll try another barrel and a Wilson Combat Dwyer Group Gripper and see how it does. Besides that I will try an extended slide lock. Maybe I'll like it better than the GI version on it now. I like the old Wilson Combat square sights on it. Work good for me. But they need some paint in the sight holes, they are pretty old. Should I use nail polish?
Mags are the Achilles heel of 1911s
I do what works for me, obtain a N.M. bushing, barrel and link. Remove the slide and squeeze it in a large vice, gently until you feel a slight friction when the slide is returned to the frame, apply toothpaste to the slide rails and work the slides a bit clean off the toothpaste and return the slide,if the slightest amount of friction is felt STOP. Install good sights and a trigger shoe. You now have a reasonably accurate weapon. Have assembled 1911’s that no part numbers match, it works and you save a lot of money. A good pair of checked wood grips are well worth the price, there are many tuning tricks you can do your self.
I myself found that I prefer a non serrated trigger. I find they cut into my finger at least on Thr 10mm 1911

In my experience an high quality 1911 (45acp with high quality magazines) is way more reliable than the modern cheap "plastic" striker fired pistols plus there is an obvious quality gap in components, had both, 1911s are keepers.
kittrainbow 7 I’ve got 3 colt 1911’s and all 3 will reliably feed everything I’ve tried in them, and I’ve shot all kinds of hard ball and hollow points.
Gonna be straight man. In iraq 2 guys carried 1911s (1 was an ed brown the other a kimber) they would choke on military 45. But all of our glocks worked no matter what we fed them
thomas jefferson absolutely 1911’s are sand and ammo sensitive. On a static range with less then 10 magazines and decent lube 1911’s are absolutely king. But in the nasty with inconsistent ammo and poor lube, (super hot out and the oil or grease can walk away on you). But for an urban carry, absolutely amazing if that’s your thing, and often many advantages vs a plastic fantastic. (My money is on a G23 because carry compliance but in a grapple, which is a real possibility a solid steel 1911 makes for a really awesome club even if you can’t shoot).

My fave is checkered front strap. I've got old welder hands and can shoot much better with front strap checkered.

ya'll obviously have been there,done that and have the t-shirt.great video.by the way,when i got my rock island 1911.i polished the ramp and throut, and replaced the inards with wilson combat parts.it still cost less than a springfield.just dropped in the parts,did not have to do any fitting.it works very well.won't use any parts but wilson combat.

For a standard carry gun is something with good sights and white light. Is what i go for.

No cause whatever you're suggested won't be in stock. Buy whatever factory non steel ammo you can get your hands on, cause if you're a die-hard one brand fan you're going to be disappointed a lot, especially since even if you can find it regularly it is hardly ever the same brand
Did not understand the comment about not using ball ammo. I thought the 1911 preferred round nose FMJ ammo. Maybe the term 'ball ammo' means something else. Ken does not like Wolf ammo, but he did not recommend anything. That would have been helpful.
Perhaps they are referring to the original World War 1 ball ammo. That is truly the only animal that has ever been manufactured that is properly called ball ammo, as it is manufactured they make the copper cup for the projector they drop a steel Ball Bearing in the nose and then fill the rest of it with lead and finish making the projectile. They wanted to make sure that it would never get any larger than .45. It was also an extremely accurate round. It also had an exact semicircle shape if you looked at it from the side. All other ammo is properly referred to as Full Metal Jacket. But the term ball did start being used when referring to other Full Metal Jacket ammo.
Glad to hear the Bill Wilson will stand behind his work because Les Baer doesn't, I happen to know someone who had a less bear firearm that shirt off one of the Locking lugs on the barrel and they refuse to fix it. Their excuse was that they didn't know what kind of ammo he was shooting through it.
The term " Ball ammo" is old dating back to WW1. Basically " Ball ammo" is military FMJ still made by Winchester in the "white box" . Its just the older term to military FMJ or civilian 230 gr FMJ.My granddads both WWII vets and my dad a Vietnam Vet call FMJ " ball ammo" its just the old military moniker.

Hey Bill,how about a 3.5" barrelled,officer size grip,1911,in .45?I know if anyone could make one for reliable,its you.Id put a deposit down the day you premier it?If you dont,I might have to order one from Nighthawk,that makes a 3.8" barrelled .45 ,or Cyllider and Slide,who makes on 3.5" .I love Wilson Combat,I bought my Commander and Recon from you,and love them!I want the smallest and lightest ,1911 in .45! it was designed for hardball/FMJ, but, most will feed a variety of JHP bullets; test them, if no issues in 100-200 rounds, you are probably good to go... Most guns that have issues will let you know within 2 mags full..

Bill Wilson I saved for 6 months , doing odd jobs, etc., ( I was 70 @ the time), to purchase an WC EDCX9. It’s been back twice for failure to extract. Each time you’re guys tell me there is nothing wrong with the pistol. I shoot twice a week, not a novice! If your warranty is so great , why am I still having occasional failures to extract???😩
Just like parachutes, it isn't absolutely reliable...I don't want it. Nothing else matters if it doesn't work.

If you depend on a weapon that you have to think about that much then you have the wrong weapon. If you're that intent on a 1911 for survival just buy an FNX 45. Higher capacity and it will always work. Costs less too. Just sayin.

A Glock is like a Honda Civic. Cheap, highly customizable, holds it's value and can run 100,000 miles with no oil change ... but, everyone has one and it's no one's first choice.
but a nice 1911 is like a Ferrari. Expensive, sensitive, high maintenance... but man, it's way faster than a Honda and it sure does turn heads.
Good mags, etc. I have 3 1911's that just run and run. If it stovepipes, something is wrong. Correct that and it will run.
A Block, I'm sorry glock, doesnt even compare to a good 1911. Shouldnt even be in the same sentence with Wilson Combat, Ed Brown, Les Bauer, and even Dan Wesson amoung others.😂
The best accessory by far, for the 1911 owner is one of those big-ass metal shredders like they have in junkyards that turn old cars into confetti. Fire up that bad boy and take your 1911 and throw the worthless clunker in.
Then, go buy a revolver that actually works right out of the box. No sharp corners, a better trigger, and sights you can see.
Thousands upon thousands of rounds thru 1911's. I had 5 at one time and they all worked. I shoot revolvers, 1911's, Glocks, Sigs etc. No problems with any of them.
Never had any problem with any 1911s except one kind of tisas 1911
