Knowing that Digimon originated as a v-pet toy for boys just makes the name that much funnier to me. Boys don't want to """""raise virtual pets.""""" They wanna _TAME DIGITAL MONSTERS._ Also, it's okay, Kunemon. You were my fave partner Digimon in Survive. 💛
All I can think about are Johnny Bravo saying that he doesn't play with dolls but with action figures and Numbah 4 saying that he's not pretty but handsome.
@@ShinAk1raSama so he just gaslights himself The moment toys won't get genderized by the real gender obsessed people the world will be one step closer to peace
The thing that i love about digimon is that you can have a lot of expression in evo lines! You can tell a story just by having one digimon turn into another. It not only makes each digimon in the same species potentially unique, but you can take different aspects of a digimon and expand them in an evolution
It's especially interesting if you take Biyomon's profile into account. There, it states that Biyomon wants to evolve into Birdramon and specifically doesn't want to evolve into Kokatorimon. You could make a whole plotline out of that.
Some of those older lines were crazy, and it just shows how flexible Digimon truly are. After all, their entire premise is that they're monsters created from digital data, and anyone with even basic entry-level knowledge of programming can tell you that changing a single bit from a 0 to a 1 can drastically change the outcome. Due to this literal digital-data nature, Digimon will only continue to evolve and thrive as technology advances. And I for one love that about them.
Funny enough tyrannomon was meant to be the easiest one of Agumon evoultions because they expected Kids to mess up, and Graymon was meant to be the harder ones as a reward.
@@shawnlegg8790 Go far enough back in the development of Digimon, you find that Greymon and Veedramon were the same thing at one point; or at the very least that the Greymon shown in _C’mon Digimon: The capering monster BUN_ looked very much like Veedramon, which was drawn before either Greymon's design or Veedramon's design were finalised. It's likely Zeromaru digivolving from an Agumon is a reference to that.
That only ended up backfiring since you had to try harder to mess up and get Tyranomon than get good conditions for Greymon, making Greymon more common and thusly more popular
I understand why they chose to use Gomamon and Ikkakumon. Seadramon is a very cool digimon, but it doesn't have much to do if there wasnt any bodies of water around for it to swim in, whereas Ikkakumon can move in the water and on land
Fun fact for the Digital Monster version 5 all of the champion and ultimate sprites are based on a bunch of kaiju from the godzilla franchise. For example the deltamon sprite is literally just king ghidorah.
Gizamon looks a bit like a frog-ish Dorat. It even has Ghidorah's fur & spikes. It's a shame Deltamon was radically redesigned to look less like Ghidorah for rather obvious reasons. I like Deltamon, but with its heads looking like SkullGreymon & MegaSeadramon, it looks like it should be level higher than it should be.
Oh yeah, they all have a big, singular horn. And Gabumon’s fur coat could become the exoskeleton of Kabuterimon, would decays away to become a literal skeleton with SkullGreymon.
That sounds dumb as hell. This is gen 1, way before digimon got wacky with its evolutions, a dog turning into a bug into a undead dinosaur is why they cleaned this crap up when the anime dropped
@dinolover "cleaned this crap up" Yeah I forgot how sensible snowball to mouse to dog to cat to angel to dog dragon is lol Or dinosaur plus angel to clay pot with wings Or small bear and axe yeti fusing into giant ice cream penguin Or actual piece of feces evolving into a monkey Or a vampire and clown becoming a pirate Or a squirrel evolving to little red riding hood Or a flying pig thing becoming an angel Or a whale becoming a fairy All evolution lines that are definitely "cleaned up from this crap" 100% They definitely don't still do this because that's how digimon works
@@dinolover way to try to ruin how Digimon works, nothing told you gabumon's sprite was whatever the heck it was supposed to be in it's sprite form, so the connection to gabumon>SkullGreymon made more sense, still it's digimon makes as much sense as devimon for Agumon in the vpets. Digimon was never mesnt to follow realistic evolution paths... There was never any "crap to clean" cept maybe in the minds of the anime fans or Digimon fans that for some reason want Digimon to be more like Pokémon with it's evolutions... One word: no! Why do you want computer programs(digimon) to function like organic animals(pokémon)?
I would love to see an alternate Timeline, where every Kid gets the other Rookie of their VPet. So Tai getting Betamon, Matt getting Elecmon etc. Maybe a potencial Video-Idea to think about Evolutionlines for them?
I guess they created pumpkin metalgreymon for the anime because they wanted to sell the digivolving toys, just like wargreymon and metalgarurumon were very much designed with the toys in mind so they could transform from agumon and gabumon.
I think that is literally the case since metalgarurumon has Gabumon’s symbol and yellow color on his underbelly because they wanted and did make a toy where Gabumon can be transformed into metalgarurumon like a Transformer toy.
That's exactly the case. I believe Kenji Watanabe actually did an interview where he said he originally designed Wargreymon with Greymon like stripes but was told to remove them to make it easier to make the warp Digivolving toys.
Most of the Adventure partners were introduced at the Baby II/In-Training level, so there could have been a version where Taichi's partner was Betamon, Yamato's Elecmon, etc. It also would have been interesting to see an anime where evolution was more branching like the V-pets, where Taichi's partner might evolve to Betamon after it deevolved to Koromon the first time.
I honestly learned Angemon was connected to Gabumon because of one of your videos. Weirdly, color wise, Gabumon and Angemon are kinda similar. Similar shades of blues and whites, a golden appendage (Angemon's main weapon and Gabumon's horn)... makes ya think.
Well... Tyrannomon can become MasterTyrannomon, which then becomes one of the Banchou, I think... Which is just Master Tyrannomon in a tattered Gakuran jacket and a hat, with a Spiked Bat...
I wouldn’t mind Agumon becoming Tyranomon as long as it’s a good evolution line like how Greymon goes to Metalgreymon and finally Wargreymon that’s why I’m kind of glad the anime made the lines make more sense than all over the place.
Great video dude. Bit of trivia I've not scoured the comments to check if anyone else mentioned this, fropm 12:12 in the video - but yeah, can confirm - the pendulum 2.0 came out before the 1.5. The x.5 vpets were originally released to promote the second Digimon D-1 Tournament circuit, where you could go to an official vpet tournament and buy the special .5 versions - or if you couldn't make it to a tournament you could actually mail order them from magazines at the time. They even had special gold and silver .5 versions which they gave out as prizes to tournament winners. It's also worth noting, Gatomon wasn't even on the pendulum 1.0, she didn't debut on a vpet until the 1.5, presumably to tie in with the anime, as the 4.5 ended up adding all of Palmon's evolution and later the 5.0 and PenZERO were heavily anime coded with their rosters. Also this isn't really hugely relevant to anything but I feel like it's still kind of interesting to anyone interested in early "Digimon irl lore" - tinfoil hat moment but there's a lot of evidence the original vpet version 5 with gazimon/gizamon wasn't part of the original plan and was rushed to release last minute. All the other tie-in media from 1999-early 2000 such as Digimon World, the earlier parts of the anime, etc - had no reference to any of the Digimon from the v5 whatsoever, only the v1-4 and pendulum series, despite the pendulums releasing much later. It almost seems like the original Digimon line was meant to end with the v4, and then move straight onto the pendulum. I think it adds a bunch of credence to the rumors that the v5 was a cancelled Godzilla vpet which got repurposed and rushed to market as a Digimon vpet after that deal fell through. There's are some other things which point to that too (The first D-1 tournament being themed around devices up to the V4, then skipping straight to the pendulums, they also used english shell molds and boards for the V5 despite being a japanese vpet, likely because the factory used for the Japanese vpets had already reconfigured to manufacture pendulums, the fact darktyranomon's sprite is an obvious edit of the Godzilla sprite from the Mothra tamagotchi, all the sprites closely resembling Godzilla monsters, etc.)
6:19 Weregarurumon debuted in the Japanese release of Digimon World (January 28, 1999) , followed by DMCG Starter Ver. 1 (June 1999) and _then_ the anime.
Could you imagine Gaossmon evolving into a blue tyranomon instead of a blue greymon? I mean when they were introduced as Blue Flare's cannon fodder, you could tell by their design that they were meant to be a rookie stage for the blue Greymon (2010 Anime Version).
Imagine there's an arc in digimon where their partners data got corrupted which leads to the digimon partner digivolved randomly. Agumon > Coelamon Palmon > Kuwagamon Etc...
If we ever get a new digimon show, i want it to play around with the branching digivolution gimmick. Like, they can have set lines, but let them branch out some more.
Well, the 2020 reboot did that to nearly everyone with alt digivolutions and justification to do that. Another season with same concept will be nice, though.
This video just makes me want more media with more Tamers and their Digimon to give some of the original Rookies and Champions their time to shine. Great video!
To be fair, Skullgremon resembles Gabumon a lot more than he does Agumon or Greymon. And given Joe was to become a Doctor, MarineAngemon would have suited him.
HAPPY BONUS WEDNESDAY VIDEO, NOTIFICATION SQUAD! Hope you enjoyed this funny thought process video, I had a lot of fun with it! Make sure to drop a like if you liked it, helps the channel grow!
10:28 well the eclecticness of the vpet 5’s evos is because nearly all of them are meant to be references to Godzilla kaiju, especially if you look at the sprites
I have a feeling that with the development of the v pet and the anime, while some Digimon like Betamon, Elecmon, Kunemon, etc weren't a part of the main cast, they find ways to include them as partners or side/reoccurring characters. Elecmon in Adventure as an example who was a somewhat reoccurring character in Adventure and as video game, Kunemon in Survive and Gotsumon in Hacker's Memory were featured to reference that these digimon are still important to the early stages of Digimon as a whole
Funny thing about the anime, we never really see a consistent digivolution except from the baby digimon that aren't partnered to the main crew. This implies that it is possible for those branching digivolutions to still be a possibility and have outside factors we don't exactly get to catch without going into tinfoil hat levels of digging. The partner themselves could be one such factor that would bind a particular line, as we see in Adventures with Greymon -> Metalgreymon/Skullgreymon where Tai's attitude and behavior actually effected the change as a plot point. Another factor in the series could be an effective "bloodline" might have a much stricter evolutionary line than the species as a whole.
The anime was curated to appeal to the most amount of kids possible and thats reflective in their Digimon as well as the characters. Thats why the anime and the merchandise from it were far more popular than the original VPets. I had those VPets in the 90s and other kids didn't believe they were even related to the show because they were substantially lower quality than the merchandise from the show and the Digivolution lines made no sense.
One line i thought was pretty fitting, especially since we got A:2020 was Patamon to Pegasusmon ending on Goddramon, it just needs a good ultimate. Feels to me much more like a cohesive line rather than the Angemon line becoming Goddramon. And just based on design Pegasusmon just feels much more like a direct Patamon evolution rather than Angemon.
It would’ve been fun to see something like a one shot alternative to the original Digimon continuity where the other original V-pet digimon were alternative partners to the original digidestined. Something like: - Joe with Betamon or Otamamon (keeping his water element from Gomamon) - Izzy with Kunemon (keeping his insectoid and electrical aesthetics from Tentomon) - Kari with Elecmon (giving her an evolution line to Leomon to keep up the feline aesthetics from Gatomon) - Matt with Gazimon (emphasizing his nature as being more abrasive and giving him a beast like digimon like the Gabumon line) - Tai with Gizamon (the red to Matt’s blue and giving a meta nod to them being counterparts on their Vpet) - TK with Gotsumon (maybe with the justification of giving him a powerful guardian to protect one of the youngest members of the group) - Mimi with Shakomon (the clamshell kind of looking like a makeup compact to compliment her feminine personality) - Sora with Ganimon (because…that’s the one left over) There may be better pairings, but it’d be a fun alternate universe what-if scenario to explore where the evolution lines of the original digidestined could even be the stand-in antagonists to shake things up.
Glad you brought up Betamon. The little guy's one of my favorite digimon, and it's sad how often the poor thing gets shafted when it was part of the original v-pet.
I think a good way they could do branching evolution lines in an anime is to have your main line i.e. argumon - greymon etc but say it's fighting an aerial foe or he needs to get somewhere far away as fast as possible it could become an airdramon, but the reason it can become that Digimon is due to an interaction with one in a past episode either it defeated one and absorbed some data from them or perhaps formed a very strong connection which aloud argumon to learn how to become airdramon, but still keep that greymon as it's main line
The problem is that it in that scenario it would be better to have the episode focus on Sora and Biyomon If one guy can do everything, there’s no point in the other guys.
@@pn2294 I was only using argumon as an example this would happen to all characters in this set up, so for example Sora's main line is a flying/bird line not greatly suited to water so you could set up an episode where biyomon learns to become swanmon, still a bird so its on brand but gives her something her main line doesn't
@@chrisd1982 The thing is in that scenario you would use Joe and Gomamon Giving one member too much utility marginalizes the team. That stuff is good for a series with one protagonist or a video game, but not really for a TV show.
@@pn2294 i get your point but my suggestion was meant to be similar to the armours in 02, meaning rather than one more powerful than another I was thinking different uses
The secondary rookies seem to have been more mistake results, which is probably why they don't get front billing. They probably wanted the protags to have the best possible evolution lines
Seeing the Kunemon to Flymon visual cohesion really makes me want to see a video where you make or complete through-line evolutions for digimon who either didn't get one but could have one, or in Kunemons example, where the creators just stopped at some point!!! Only problem is I'd rather see custome art rather than picking existing digimon, because the video cohesion from Kunemon to Flymon is what I'd like to see further!🙄🙄🙄
Probably marketability. A bunch of the ones left out look kinda evil or lacking, and also you need to think about the role each would fit, like the cool one, the cute one, etc. In the end it was a smart choice but it would've been fun if sometimes the partner digimon branched out. 2020 did something like that with BlitzGreymon.
I love topics like this, I've become really invested in the original vpet Digimon, especially the branches pre-Adventure. It's the closest I'll get to being a Digiboomer except I still really like a lot of modern Digimon. I think it's so fascinating that the anime and the vpets basically preach two totally different mindsets on how evolution works, and yet I still think they both work perfectly well hand in hand. Your Digimon has an "expected" line that will probably happen so long as you're doing an alright job and then it has these branches that may vary based on what data it takes in and how you treat it. Maybe because Greymon requires less care mistakes, if you treat your Agumon well and raise it properly it evolves into an honorable but fierce dinosaur companion, whereas if you're a little more slack, maybe a little too harsh, you make all these mistakes, it becomes a more violent and hard to control (but undeniably powerful!) Tyrannomon. Even when the evolutions seem _completely_ out of pocket (Gabumon to Kabuterimon? You sure?), I still love them because it makes them truly unique. Coming at it from the angle of making a Digimon OC, it lets you combine a bunch of Digimon you like into one big chart of evolutions. If I'm interested in a particular Champion-level Digimon, I don't have to make a whole new OC for it, I can just attach it to a Rookie I already have that feels right. Yeah, my Bearmon naturally evolves into Gryzzmon, but I like Bullmon too, and bears and bulls are both animals famed for their strength, what stops me from just attaching Bullmon to my Bearmon's evolution line as a branch? Nothing. I find that very freeing. I've said this before but if I posted a thread on a Pokemon forum saying "hey wouldn't it be neat if Charmeleon evolved into Dragonite", they'd tell me "that's stupid, you're stupid, Charmeleon evolves into Charizard because it was designed to do that, it would never evolve into anything else, stop thinking about this stupid idea", but suggesting unique Digimon lines is one of the best parts of the Digimon fandom and can _completely_ change how you feel about a Digimon you didn't like before by attaching it to one you do! There was a challenge on a Digimon evolution line building subreddit that was "make an evolution line for your least favorite Rookie", and I settled on Espimon who I'm very underwhelmed by. I gave it some thought and I made a nice little evolution chart for it that branches in a variety of different ways, and yeah, I'm not gonna lie, making a new evolution chart for Espimon that used a bunch of Digimon I really like made me like Espimon a little bit more, because I saw all these details about it now that could become things I liked! It was really quite interesting and I feel like that's _very_ unique to Digimon.
nah i like the main lines. its what makes the digimon cool and unique to me. sure theres a few champions/adults and ultimates/perfects that i can throw into a line cohesively. especially getting into the megas. im fine with rookies branching off and having multiple lines. like salamon could turn into gatomon, blckgatomon, and meicoomon and have ALL the ultimates and megas associated. you could use the new luxmon as the designated rookie for ALL of the angel digimon. that makes sense. totally random digivolutions like gabumon to kabuterimon and then say to like metalmamemon and then another random mega just irks the hell out of me. i like cohesion and i would never use a digimon i dont like like espimon. no digivolutions i could use that i like that would even make sense with him.
Yeah, it's good that evolutions have become more streamlined since they give more cohesion to the designs, even if they can branch out. Like, even if any Digimon could evolve to, let's say, Greymon, Agumon has a higher probability of achieving the form that an Otamamon, and both designs show that. However, I miss the old V-pet rivalries that tended to happen back then. One that you still see from time to time but not nearly enough as I would've liked is the Mamemon/Tyrannomon family rivalry with the Greymon family. Both lines were originally Agumon's but focused on different aspects if you would like a more aggressive evolution, you would've evolved Agumon into Greymon and later into an even more aggressive Digimon in Metal Greymon (that even became a virus-type), but if your preference was a more docile and tameable evolution, you've evolved Agumon into Tyrannomon and later the even friendlier looking Mamemon and those two were marketed as rivals. Just like Charizard and Blastoise.
This video almost perfectly summarizes one of the biggest reasons why I love Digimon so much! There are just so many possibilities and seemingly no hard limits! And with digimon being born from data created by humans(assuming I'm understanding the base lore correctly), even fan made digimon could be seen as "real" digimon and from there, the possibilities are never ending! Just nothing but unending potential and creativity
My head canon is basically since these are digital monsters, and since they evolve by adding data to their lower levels, I assumed that they could evolve multiple ways, depending upon how they are nurtured or what kind of pressure or danger they are under. For instance Greymon evolved into SkullGreymon under extreme pressure. Patamon evolved into Angemon when fighting Devimon, and Gatomon evolved into Angewomon to destroy Myotismon. My guess is there are multiple lines any digimon can evolve into depending on various factors.
Thinking about the Digimon V-pets reminds me of the time when I had a tamagotchi as a kid. I definitely would have gotten things like Numemon, Vegiemon, and the like, since I never really understood how the V-pets worked. That as well as the fact that because of school, I never really had time to engage with them, and my thing would always be dead when I got back.
Another dope video idea. The thing I love about digimon especially early digimon is what was the thought process of these digivolution lines. Let me go settle down and watch this. Edit: I think Betamon wasn't picked to be Joe's partner because his artwork makes it look more like a bad guy. I think it was easier to recolor and change MetalGreymon. I could also think they may have thought Betamon design is boring(I love Betamon and it's line has been my favorite since I was a kid.) Edit 2: kunemon not getting more love is wild. Flymon should have an ultimate and mega by now. Edit 3: Yeah if it's anything like how other anime monster series go. Most of the team monsters are picked based on appeal. The anime team probably went through the line up and saw what would fit. Me personally I look at Betamon and Kunemon and they don't look like digimon that would be appealing to kids or like partners until they digivolve(I disagree, but I get it). Kunemon seem way to generic and Betamon artwork makes it looks like a bad guy. They probably didn't have any ideas on making it look more friendly. It's also like they pieced digivolutions together as well and then had artist go back and make proper ultimates for the digimon rookies that didn't have their own dedicated ultimates like Agumon.
I think every one of the children should've gotten Numemon as their evo. These kids do NO training, they do NOT take their digimon to toilets or use portable toilets, they take them to environments they HATE and they're always on struggling to feed the little guys as well as themselves. They are NOT meeting the care requirements to get anything else.
@ 11:45 I would imagine in Japan, there was probably a poll of favorite colors and red won over blue, hence why MegaKabuterimon and MetalGreymon got “red/orange” recolors. The Naruto Manga also came out and Naruto is one of the “Big 3” series alongside One Piece and Bleach, so orange was seen as a popular color as well due to Naruto. I have no evidence supporting this concept, but I wouldn’t doubt something like this happening.
Digimon is always changing and I really do love that about the series, there is lore but if they see something they want to do they can and it still works for the franchise
Hm, you do fine points, even using V-Pets! I'd have Dominimon for Patamon. Heck even Reppamon is cool for patamon, but Pegasusmon fits the most! Also didn't expect you to meet you today lol. But maybe Thumbnail's right! Maybe Patamon should have stay Patamon- Nah I'm joking! Also the like Pegasusmon! But Digimon Adventure lines are still peak! That's it, that's the comment, also Happy Odaiba Day tomorrow!
I think a big reason betamon wasn't used as a partner was because his evolutin line was very much the Seadramon line and not only did we see Seadramon early on as an antagonist, we got megaseadramon and metalseadramon, all working as antagonists so I think it would've been a bit weird/difficult to have betamon as a partner when its main evolution line were all villains in the anime. And I think elecmon was associated with the Leomon line and they made Leomon such a prominent character that having elecmon as a partner wouldn't have worked.
I also think it would have been difficult to have Seadramon fighting outside of water. It can but you would expect it to be used mainly for water battles not a desert.
This is always something I always wanted they tackle in a story. Maybe have only 3 main characters and their digimons can have branching evolutions depending on choices similar to Survive. Because that’s part of the charm of Digimon (for me) and what sets it apart from Pokemon
VPet 4 line of Palmon to Coelamon to Megadramon has become one of my favorites. The 20th and color ver added two different Megas with Aegisdramon or Darkdramon
I don't know if it's been said but: Vegiemon - Vademon is kinda like Digimon's OG Inkay-Malamar (Flip Vegiemon upside down, his wrinkly butt becomes Vademon's brain, the "feathers" on Vegie's heads become Vade's leg tentacles, and the arms stay the same)
The lack of rules for evolution in Digimon really bothers me. It's literally impossible to know all the evolutionary lines and be familiar with all the existing Digimon. Plus, you can have the same Digimon in different stages, which to me, breaks the whole logic. I like Digimon because it's nostalgic for me, but I get frustrated with the lack of rules and how things sometimes lose their meaning... Someone needs to write a complete Digimon manual XP
Tbh I've been feeling the new anime evolution lines are a bit TOO curated, they end up feeling like Pokemon lines. I miss the Adventure lines where it's not too cohesive but still share a theme (except Agumon and Gabumon lines). I'm glad Survive takes this approach with their partner Digimon lines.
3:11 It seemed like the first rookie stage of each version's evolution chart was used for the Digimon Adventure partners, considering this was a trend except Ver. 4 and Ver 5. Though Ver 6 was Australian exclusive (I'd really like to know the story there) so in Japan Tentomon and Otamamon debuted in the first release of Pendulum instead, joined by Gottsumon as Pendlums had more digimon.
ok, this came to my mind because of a friend bringing it up, and maybe it can be for a future video, what if the rest of the adventure digimon got data squad/savers varients
I have an idea What if the adventure digimon dna digivolved like 02 Basic how this works is instead of going ultimate the digimon would fuse with each other in their champion stage
As a kid I would be frustrated when Digimon wouldn’t always follow previously shown digivolutions. Now that’s what I appreciate a lot about it. However, when there is a complete line it’s amazing
I love the vpet style evolutions it’s about caring for your digimon that changes the digivolution and that’s unique compared to other monster tamer franchises
I'd say that they'd already planned out some episodes for the anime, and given that they faced Seadramon in one of the first few episodes of the show, the writers probably thought that having Betamon (who digivolves into Seadramon) on the team might've been a little confusing... ESPECIALLY with MetalSeadramon as one of the Dark Masters later in the series (though that may not have been conceived of yet)
That’s one of the reasons I loved the first Digimon World video game. It mixed the branching evolution lines of the pets with the canonical / anime lines as well. Interesting enough too the version 5 isn’t in the first video game at all but some that came in the pendulum were obtainable or bosses
Digimon World 3 was my first game experience as a kid when it came to stuff outside of the anime and I remember getting upset whenever some of the first champion and ultimate levels I unlocked werent the ones from the anime. I think pokemon had a huge influence in that because I was of the mindset that digimon had a 'correct' evolution path and anything else was wrong. As I got older though I grew to love the idea of the branching digivolution paths. I obviously later learned more about their vpet origins and grew to love them even more.
Digital Monster Ver. S introduced Gatomon, Angewomon and Holydramon (but not Salamon who was an anime original) to the franchise, long before the anime. As well as adding As well as Ebidramon, Evilmon, Gesomon, Roachmon, Gorillamon, Lady Devimon, Mammothmon, Mechanorimon, Minotaurmon, Saber Leomon and Shakomon who weren't in the Vepts up to Ver 4 that the game also included all the digimon from. So I have to question, how else could have Gatomon's line went?

The simple reason they didn't use Betamon instead of like Gomamon for example? Koromon. Koromon was used for Agumon already. All the original 7 used an In-Training they were associated with in the original V-Pets and Pendulums.
I believe it's more of the conditions that the Adventure Digimon had that altered their digivolution. For example Agumon naturally would go into Tyrannomon since it's in a habitat for survival, and being a Digidestined Digimon made it so it doesn't achieve that natural instinct for survival and becomes a Greymon. Patamon digivolving into Angemon is because of the crest theme introduced, being Angels a sign of hope for many. Another example is the Agumon from Savers/Data Squad, having the bands give it a special condition to go into GeoGreymon instead of a regular Greymon, based on the previous theory I gave of Agumon.
I liked for an alternative Digimon adventure were Agumon digivolve to Tyranomon then to mastertyranomon Gazimon replaces Gabumon as I can see fit Matt’s personally Kunemon replaces Tentomon as Izzy’s Partner Betamon replaces Gommamon as Joe’s Partner Elecmon replace patamon as TK’s partner Biyomon could get Parrotmon as it Ultimate and Palmon could get Bollosomon as its Ultimate and Gatomon could digivolve to GrappLeomon instead.
Yes! The reboot or 2020 edition of Adventure would have been much more interesting if they had different rookies! They all should have had the survive rookies. Toyagumon, snow agumon and agumon black replacing agumon.
02 showed us why branching evolution paths didn't always work the best in the anime from a narrative sense. The new evolutions felt forced cause the old one should have been able to do the job. When Flamedramon couldn't break the dark spiral (or any of the other digimon), but Raindramon somehow could, I felt like that didn't make any sense. Or when ExVeemon shows up as Davis and Veemon are getting chased but never evolved into Flamedramon or Raindramon because plot needed to show the new evolution. Then there's the problem of an evolution being so context sensitive that you hardly see it, like with Submarimon only showing up the few times they need to go underwater and is criminally underutilized.
Back then everything turned into everything 😆 Im glad they gave some cohesiveness in later games and anime. Though I love the freedom for more options. Glad the Digimon adventure 2020 anime showed that they can have more than one digivolution. With blitzgreymon (from metal greymon), ponchomon (from palmon) and had pegasusmon as a normal evolution line for patamon. Also I prefer Plesiomon more for Gomamon (maybe a warp digivolution directly from gomamon). Vikemon is too much ice (like metalgarurumon) but fits well with ikakumon. Whereas plesiomon is more water based which is directly what gomamon should be. Also I agree, kunemon, betamon and elecmon etc are underrated.
I think the reason they avoided Betamon and Kunemon was because they were Virus-types, and the Adventure canon basically slotted Virus-types into Villains.
Palmon either stays with plants and becomes a fairy or becomes a dragon. Both I love! V4 Color goes hard! Also can still go fairy on V4 Color. Also it has NANImon a Tamagotchi. I just love Palmon 😂
This makes me think about Digimon World: Next Order, and how they implemented a branching system, similarly to the original v-pets. Though, there are some lines where it is straightforward and logical, such as certain Megas only available from 1 ultimate. Imperialdramon comes to mind, which digivolves from Paildramon. I don't know if you have a video about DNA or ExE Digivolutions, but perhaps it would be interesting to hear any ideas you have about them as a concept. In other thoughts, I do wonder why Examon is a Level 6 in some cases, but a level 7 in others. In DW:NO, it is a Mega/Level 6, but as far as I know, Examon is also an Ultra/level 7 as a DNA Digivolution of Slayerdramon and Breakdramon.
I have a group of OCs who have digimon partners that come out if their V-Pets So all their lines are the V-Pet lines but each person has a different one. Like the MC has a Pendulum X 1.0
Togemon is the representation of Mimi's initial prickliness and willingness to lash out at others due to her sincere "calls a spade a spade" attitude combined with the stress of the experience she went through in DA1. She does eventually soften and acclimatise as the series progresses, even becoming more of the heart of the group than Sora (whose "love" crest is interpreted as the nurturing mother/responsible older sister vibe), and this character development for Mimi is demonstrated by Togemon literally flowering into Lilymon. So yes, those evolutions were clearly custom made for the anime. Also I watched the dub because I didn't have a choice as an 8 year old child and now it's nostalgic.
Knowing that Digimon originated as a v-pet toy for boys just makes the name that much funnier to me.

In this alternate universe, in that most iconic, triumphant moment, Patamon finally digivoles into Unimon and impales Devimon upon their mighty horn.
"I thought you're suppossed to sacrifice your life to kill me, why aren't you dying? This timeline stinks!" Devimon, probably.

The thing that i love about digimon is that you can have a lot of expression in evo lines! You can tell a story just by having one digimon turn into another. It not only makes each digimon in the same species potentially unique, but you can take different aspects of a digimon and expand them in an evolution
I loved that about Survive. It felt like they put a lot of thought into choosing all the Digimon and their evolutions to fit the story and characters.
Biyomon to Kokatorimon to Megadramon would've been wild if it happened in the anime lol
Can you imagine?
Always imagined Birdramon would be a transitionary stage from bird theme to dinosaur/dragon theme.
Great, now I'm imagining two Kokatorimon having a err...Kock fight on a ship in that one episode.
@MrAzam244 The bad one would have been Akatorimon, just for shit and giggles
Greymon's the hardest to obtain. Tyrannomon's the second hardest. Numemon's the easiest.
In one on the mangas Ty is partnered with Agumon but it evolves into Veedramon instead of Greymon.
@@shawnlegg8790 It's suggested that his Veedramon used to be an Agumon but we never see it as a rookie.

4:37 That's why I was kind of happy Betamon was one of the 'starters' available for Cyber Sleuth Hacker's memory
I kinda wish it was Otamamon instead so that they would all be NSp
I'm glad you are so knowledgeable about Digimon, I love digimon but don't know half of what you do about it, so it's always fun listening
Glad you enjoy it!
Honestly looking at that second vpet, I can kind of see Gabumon > Kabuterimon > SkullGreymon, especially the latter two.
Oh yeah, they all have a big, singular horn.
And Gabumon’s fur coat could become the exoskeleton of Kabuterimon, would decays away to become a literal skeleton with SkullGreymon.
Makes even more sense when you consider that from Ver. 2 onward, the OG sprites were made before the official designs.
That sounds dumb as hell. This is gen 1, way before digimon got wacky with its evolutions, a dog turning into a bug into a undead dinosaur is why they cleaned this crap up when the anime dropped
@dinolover "cleaned this crap up"
Yeah I forgot how sensible snowball to mouse to dog to cat to angel to dog dragon is lol
Or dinosaur plus angel to clay pot with wings
Or small bear and axe yeti fusing into giant ice cream penguin
Or actual piece of feces evolving into a monkey
Or a vampire and clown becoming a pirate
Or a squirrel evolving to little red riding hood
Or a flying pig thing becoming an angel
Or a whale becoming a fairy
All evolution lines that are definitely "cleaned up from this crap" 100%
They definitely don't still do this because that's how digimon works
@@dinolover way to try to ruin how Digimon works, nothing told you gabumon's sprite was whatever the heck it was supposed to be in it's sprite form, so the connection to gabumon>SkullGreymon made more sense, still it's digimon makes as much sense as devimon for Agumon in the vpets. Digimon was never mesnt to follow realistic evolution paths... There was never any "crap to clean" cept maybe in the minds of the anime fans or Digimon fans that for some reason want Digimon to be more like Pokémon with it's evolutions... One word: no! I would love to see an alternate Timeline, where every Kid gets the other Rookie of their VPet. So Tai getting Betamon, Matt getting Elecmon etc. Maybe a potencial Video-Idea to think about Evolutionlines for them?
Yes
Sora and Mimi just swapping
That's cool! And yeah a lot of these early Digimon I think have intentional ways they all line up
Would love to know what a WarTyrannomon might have looked like
RustTyrannomon but humanoid, probably? They really should do more Tyrannomon variants.
Well... Tyrannomon can become MasterTyrannomon, which then becomes one of the Banchou, I think... Which is just Master Tyrannomon in a tattered Gakuran jacket and a hat, with a Spiked Bat...
Imagine something caveman variant of War Greymon for that could be cool I think.

I wouldn’t mind Agumon becoming Tyranomon as long as it’s a good evolution line like how Greymon goes to Metalgreymon and finally Wargreymon that’s why I’m kind of glad the anime made the lines make more sense than all over the place.
Rust Tyranomon might as well be one of the coolest digimons out there
Tyrannomon into MasterTyrannomon (or MetalTyrannomon), then into RustTyrannomon.
Not true, WereGarurumon is not playable in Digimon World, it's just in the code.

Agumon > Coelamon
Palmon > Kuwagamon

If we ever get a new digimon show, i want it to play around with the branching digivolution gimmick. Like, they can have set lines, but let them branch out some more.

True. Thats why i liked Survive. But the Side Characters missed out on the Action. Branching Lines would be cool.

Well, the 2020 reboot did that to nearly everyone with alt digivolutions and justification to do that.
Another season with same concept will be nice, though.
This video just makes me want more media with more Tamers and their Digimon to give some of the original Rookies and Champions their time to shine. Great video!
To be fair, Skullgremon resembles Gabumon a lot more than he does Agumon or Greymon.

but you know found a way to make it work and but their some gaps to fix problem or not?
2:24 And there was plenty good reason why Gulus was the exception.
Something like:
- Joe with Betamon or Otamamon (keeping his water element from Gomamon)
- Izzy with Kunemon (keeping his insectoid and electrical aesthetics from Tentomon)
- Kari with Elecmon (giving her an evolution line to Leomon to keep up the feline aesthetics from Gatomon)
- Matt with Gazimon (emphasizing his nature as being more abrasive and giving him a beast like digimon like the Gabumon line)
- Tai with Gizamon (the red to Matt’s blue and giving a meta nod to them being counterparts on their Vpet)
- TK with Gotsumon (maybe with the justification of giving him a powerful guardian to protect one of the youngest members of the group)
- Mimi with Shakomon (the clamshell kind of looking like a makeup compact to compliment her feminine personality)
- Sora with Ganimon (because…that’s the one left over)
There may be better pairings, but it’d be a fun alternate universe what-if scenario to explore where the evolution lines of the original digidestined could even be the stand-in antagonists to shake things up.
Glad you brought up Betamon. The little guy's one of my favorite digimon, and it's sad how often the poor thing gets shafted when it was part of the original v-pet.
karn ex i love your videos please don't stop making them
Thanks, I don't plan to haha
I think a good way they could do branching evolution lines in an anime is to have your main line i.e. argumon - greymon etc but say it's fighting an aerial foe or he needs to get somewhere far away as fast as possible it could become an airdramon, but the reason it can become that Digimon is due to an interaction with one in a past episode either it defeated one and absorbed some data from them or perhaps formed a very strong connection which aloud argumon to learn how to become airdramon, but still keep that greymon as it's main line
The problem is that it in that scenario it would be better to have the episode focus on Sora and Biyomon
If one guy can do everything, there’s no point in the other guys.
@@pn2294 I was only using argumon as an example this would happen to all characters in this set up, so for example Sora's main line is a flying/bird line not greatly suited to water so you could set up an episode where biyomon learns to become swanmon, still a bird so its on brand but gives her something her main line doesn't
@@chrisd1982 The thing is in that scenario you would use Joe and Gomamon
Giving one member too much utility marginalizes the team.
Fun fact the champion sprites of the og vpets are Godzilla sprites ie tyrannomon is Godzilla, flymon is mothra etc
@@bluelunarmonkeytarot8533 That's nice but I don't care.
@@bluelunarmonkeytarot8533you could use vademon to keep the UFO theme
I could see Patamon - Unimon - Tylinmon - Goddramon
Yup, that's my favourite alt line for Patamon
This was a really interesting history lesson.
Very strange choices were made in the past haha
I could also think they may have thought Betamon design is boring(I love Betamon and it's line has been my favorite since I was a kid.)
Edit 2: kunemon not getting more love is wild.
If I remember it correctly, was Tyrannomon my first digimon in v-pet, in World1, and I had it in survive

Happy Wednesday. Not a channel member, but somehow I saw this video Sunday
VPet 4 line of Palmon to Coelamon to Megadramon has become one of my favorites. The 20th and color ver added two different Megas with Aegisdramon or Darkdramon
I don't know if it's been said but:
Vegiemon - Vademon is kinda like Digimon's OG Inkay-Malamar (Flip Vegiemon upside down, his wrinkly butt becomes Vademon's brain, the "feathers" on Vegie's heads become Vade's leg tentacles, and the arms stay the same)
The lack of rules for evolution in Digimon really bothers me.
What are you talking about? There are rules.
11:22 man, that tiny otamamon sprite caught me offguard lol
Tbh I've been feeling the new anime evolution lines are a bit TOO curated, they end up feeling like Pokemon lines. I miss the Adventure lines where it's not too cohesive but still share a theme (except Agumon and Gabumon lines). I'm glad Survive takes this approach with their partner Digimon lines.
Huh, i see, this was very interesting, makes me wonder about what could’ve been, especially for 02.
Argumon to tyranomon then Metal and eventually Rust is something I would LOVE to see animated at some point
I have an idea
What if the adventure digimon dna digivolved like 02
Basic how this works is instead of going ultimate the digimon would fuse with each other in their champion stage
Yeah, it’s not that Angemon digivolves from Patamon
It’s that TK’s Patamon digivolves to Angemon
Thanks lord the anime retconned some of these lines
Reference book: "Beelzemon is the worst guy ever."
Beelzemon in Tamers: *Has one of the best redemption arcs in anime history*
Beelzemon in Xros Wars: *Is just a badass anti-hero through and through*
The simple reason they didn't use Betamon instead of like Gomamon for example?
I honestly agree that betamon does not get the recognition it deserves even though its one of the OGs along with agumon
Maybe have a art contest for potential champion forms for all the og digimon
Who are The Digimon Girls as The Powerpuff Girls
Wait, Skullgreymon being a digivolve for Gabumon makes sense now. They both have a horn on their forehead, where as Agumon does not!
As usual, Digimon content is good content ❤️
I am glad we live in a (Digital) World where I can have a story where a Gazimon Digivolves into BeelStarmon without it breaking Canon.
The anime made the right choices.
You should make a video where you create a Digimon line up using the original vpets
I have a group of OCs who have digimon partners that come out if their V-Pets
So all their lines are the V-Pet lines but each person has a different one. Like the MC has a Pendulum X 1.0
Fun fact: most of the champions in the Version 5 are somewhat inspired by characters from the Godzilla franchise.
I agree with the betamon stuff. Betamon is one of my favorites and the whole seadramon line is my favorite. I wish betamon and seadramon got more love
