Helping people is more important than accumulating miles. It is time to get off the trail and help thees folks out.
Ramdino, tell everyone to stay off trail please. I spent thur night in moreland gap shelter. There was no cell service there and the last we heard, it was no going to be that bad. At 10am, the micro bursts began and trees just started toppling. Big granddaddy trees. At 11 a tree fell right beside the shelter, then a little later one fell across the front, smashing the picnic table and the front of the shelter. Thank God it had cinder block walls. We were able to get out with just a few bruises and stay in a V created by two huge fallen trees. If another one fell it would go across the two trunks. Soon the sun came out and the winds died a little and we both high tailed it out 6m to Dennis Cove Rd. It took over 6 hrs to get there because of all the blow downs. Lost the trail twice because it turned or switchbacked under the debris. Thankyou Farout!!!!!!! Many bruises, scratches, and bug bites later, we got out. It is DANGEROUS! Thru hikers, I know it stinks, but your life is more important than a 1 year title. It's still a thru hike if you finish it next year.
EdwinKeen-h8h - What a scary experience! I've been thinking about those that were already on trail when the weather hit. Glad you made it out ok!
So glad you got out safely! Good advice to other hikers! 🙏
Wow! I was just wondering if we had heard any stories from hikers actually caught on the trail.
Wow! I was just wondering if we had heard any stories from hikers actually caught on the trail.
@EdwinaKeen-u8h. Wow, so glad you survived. Send me some pics. Btw are kin to Keens from Indiana?
Ramdino you're right telling the hikers to not add stress to these towns. Without power these residents are going to be eating ready to eat foods-backpacking foods. The incredibly kind shuttle drivers are most likely helping their friends and neighbors. The volunteer trail crews will also be opening access for there neighbors and not clearing the trail until the region is stabilized. The grocery stores serving the residents may not get their scheduled food deliveries due to road closures.
Hikers don't need to hike, too much going on, and it is what it is. Praying for you and others in the middle of this.
Thanks for being a responsible citizen...and for advocating for some common sense responses to this terrible situation!!! I hope lots of folks heed your advice.
Tried to continue my 24 SOBO from Roan Mtn today. Going 0.5 miles on the AT took me 1 hr. SO MANY BLOWNDOWNS almost one every 250FT of trail 😮💨. Looks like a Nuke went off in this section of the AT. It's going to be a long time before this gets cleared, AT may not even be ready for 25 NOBO season...
Send us any other trail conditions you may have
Be safe! Hope you make it okay and home okay.
Erwin, Hot Springs, Roan Mountain, Damascus are all in rough shape. We are doing our best to clear down trees, and in many cases stabilize collapsed mountains sides. There are people who can’t even leave their homes because the roads have given way. Just be patient my dear SOBO’s the trail will return. Just think of all the good you can do to help restore the trail and its communities.
Thank you for this video
You said it. Unless you are there doing emergency work or somehow got stuck there, Don't go! The people are struggling.
My friends in Murphy, NC, west of Asheville just got power back but no cell or internet.
Best update on the trail available. Let's fix this!
Thanks Ramdino. We are SOBO in Virginia and making plans to end our hike for the year
Sad for so many of the SOBOs of 2024.
Surely you know some maniacs who will see this as just another obstacle course challenge.
So sad for all the SOBOS out there… but it is just too dangerous
@chase-life tks for your sacrifice.
You are 100% correct. Come on, trail community, lets help those in need. Our granddaughter's husband is in NC and SC with his power crew form Canada to help restore power.
I guess I’ll put off my hike for another year and live up to my (trying to be a thru hiker) non trail name of NOGO! My heart aches for the people of the southern Appalachians.
Thank you for the updates! We are in the South Greene Tennessee area of Greeneville, our entire Greene county water is down, because of the damage to the Nolichuckey pump house! Don’t know how long we will be without water… this storm was no joke! We are going to see what we are made of! But God! He will see us through
Prayers being sent
@@Ramdinohikes thank you 😊
You are 100% correct! We need to let the first responders do their jobs without getting in the way. And, whatever resources are available need to be for the residents and all the helpers. It is gut wrenching what is happening in the mountain communities. Prayers. Prayers. Prayers.
Pack it up and go home.
Thanks for the update. Absolutely agree with the advice to stay off the trail.
Glad it was helpful!
My son was able to get out of Asheville today. He said its a war zone👣🌻he was on 26 and was able to get gas in Irwin, no lines.
I applaud you for living your Christian values and caring about people both now and during covid. Thank you for being a leader.
Glade to hear you discourage hikers to continue as they will take resources from those trying to survive. My wife and I have been talking about that for a couple days.
You’re doing a great job keeping the community updated. Our prayers are with you!
Thank you for your support! It’s important for us to prioritize those who are in need during tough times.
I maintain a section of trail south of Indian Grave Gap outside of Erwin, and I work with the Eastman Tennessee Hiking Club maintaining the AT through Tennessee. The National Forest Service has asked us to stand down and stay off the trail until further notice. There are much higher priorities at the moment.
Sev - class of ‘21
@999masterdash Hey Sev, let m know what trail conditions are once you get in there.
Prayers and faith for the hiking community
Thank you, Ramdino, for keeping it real about what is going on in western NC, and TN and how the A.T. has been impacted. It is sad, huge loss. The hostels and the trail are woven in with each other, as are the shuttle drivers. I can't wrap my mind around some of these places being closed indefinitely.
No doubt
It's breaking my heart to see all the devastation, but thankful I was able to experience that section of the trail before all of this. I'll still plan to hike next year, but may change my plans to hit places that may still need some volunteers. I just wish I had the means to help now. I know what losing everything to a natural disaster feels like. It was a wildfire in 17 for me. I'll be sending all the love I got until I get there in person.
The word I heard yesterday was that I-40 from TN to Asheville will be closed until September next year, both directions. I’m in Madison County in Western NC, the devastation in the Asheville area is beyond believable. Some towns are gone. Just gone. Roads are gone. BTW, I was the hostel manager of Mother Marian’s. Marian was my wife.
For those who might not have gotten the word, Marian passed away on 30 July. Be safe out there, hikers. As my dad used to say, use your head for something besides a hat rack.
@navret1707 so sorry for your loss. Is the hostel still open?
Be careful clearing your property, Ramdino. Tricky business cutting suspended trees.
No doubt
Yes be careful
Appreciate the detailed report.
Praying for those who had to deail with this.
Hoping things get better for you soon.
God Bless!
My brother’s favorite trail town was Damascus. I sent my donation to Samaritan’s Purse. Thanks for mentioning this great relief organization.
That is awesome!
Thanks for the update Ramdino. I've been thinking about those that were already on trail when the weather hit. There's a comment from a person who was on trail and the harrowing experience he had getting off trail to safety. Sounds like the infrastructure in your area is badly affected. What a difficult time when gas stations are down, water supply is affected, grocery stores not in operation. Your request for hikers to pitch in and help the hostel owners and trail communities is a wonderful idea. Stay safe.
Thanks for the update and please be careful working out in your woods! People need to hear your updates so take care & stay safe. I’m so heartbroken over all those trail towns. 😪 Yes I think hikers should go home for now ☹️. Better to be safe than sorry. Praying for everyone!! 🙏🙏
Thank you, I will
Be careful with those root balls…they have a mind of their own when you free them up!
I agree, Ramdino. If I can't get power or water here in East TN in the next 10 days then I will need to move in with family up north and close up the house. Prayers to everyone impacted by Helene.
I hope get your power and water back❤
@@Cindyscrossstitch Thank you, Cindy!
Protection 🛡️🩹🩸 Prayers. . . 🤲 🙏🦅
I'm completely stunned that someone who had an extra weekend and some extra money would think about hiking rather than helping. Thanks for this message it amazes me that people needed it❤🙏
Totally agree!
The Appalachian Station at 19e hostel in Roan Mountain is open. Starlink being delivered tomorrow if people need to get on wifi.
Im following a number of sobos that are in PA. Thw devastating pictures being posted from all the beautiful trail stops are so sad. It's like this hurricane went right up and over the AT. Im in NJ and we know hurricanes and flooding, but nothing can compare when mountain water comes barreling down like that. Everyone be safe and God bless
I think he said it; once in a thousand year river flood!! So sad to see the devastation
@sticktheeagle Yes, and Hurricane Sandy in 2012 was a 100-year flood that hit our area, and some are still rebuilding. It's so sad the devastation. Hope all is well with you. Congratulations on your summit.
Folks shouldn’t give you crap about saying stay off the trail. This situation is nothing like Covid, for anyone trying to equate the two. You are giving the best advice‼️ unless you’re living it like we are, don’t disrespect us within the devastation areas by hiking through without regard for those suffering!
Good to have another update. Some of my most favorite areas so completely devasted! It is truly heartbreaking. Prayers for everyone and mostly for those who have lost loved ones.
Outstanding update. Please continue to provide the names of local volunteer organizations that can use help, funding etc. Thank you.
Thank you, I will
we also encourage donations to Samaritan's Purse, some of our friends in the area are stranded with roads to their property gone Greenville TN , Irwin TN, Spruce Pines NC
STAR LINK PASSWORD IS GONC
Very good advice. It’s time for hikers to help the community.
Thank you for the update.
God Bless❤
Thanks Ramdino. Be careful with those blowdowns and root balls! I had to come off trail to deal with tornado damage back home in ‘23. And was without power for 13 days after Katrina. I was one of the lucky ones. Plenty of gasoline, but no electricity to pump it out of the ground. Agree that there is a time to hike and a time to help. This will be a lengthy recovery.
We were out of power over a month with Katrina. This is going to take awhile.
Prayers for all involved. Thanks for the updates.
It's been rough. Clayton got hit hard (eye went right over), had to go over and help some relatives with a generator as they're going to be out of power for at least a week (according to Georgia Power). All Ingles grocery stores are cash only (headquartered in Black Mountain, just east of Asheville, right on the Swannanoa River), and unfortunately they're the only game in town (closest real grocery store to us that's not an Ingles is 1h 20m away). Best thing to do is to not go to Western NC right now!!
Thank you for a reasoned assessment... this is heartbreaking 💔
You are so welcome
Sound advice - do not add to the problem, exit the impact area with all due speed. Money moves well, Samaritan’s Purse is a great place to start.
Thank you for the information and reputable organizations to donate. Love your advice to help too.
It would be nice if able bodied hikers would pitch in and help with clean up. The trail in my opinion is way too dangerous with downed trees and washed out trails. Why take that kind of unnecessary risk when the good folks in the area need all the help they can get.
Love this Ramdino!!
God Bless Ramdino? All of this will take time to repair!❤️🙏
With the few reports from hikers who have seen the trail here, I think you are right. Stay off the trail. If people went to help, would we be in the way or be helpful?
They are saying the best way to help right now is to donate money
Thank you for what you are sharing. Blessings
Mudslides and uprooting may occur after the rains, with or without additional rain.
Thanks and be careful Ramdino. Will appreciate your updates.
Thank you, I will
There more important things going on right now then hiking. Get out and volunteer
Good report and solid advice, Ramdino. Lots of places and people are devastated.
Yes indeed
Boots on the ground report: The AT from Amicalola to Neel Gap is in great shape and suffered no damage. Most, if not all, area businesses are open.
Correction: Springer to Neel Gap. There is no news on the approach trail yet.
How about to Dicks Creek?
@Ramdinohikes Hikers coming from Dick's Creek to Neel Gap late yesterday said that the trail is in normal shape except for a few blow downs. We got lucky. We didn't get much wind in this area, and the rain was just a normal rain.
I just saw this and clicked on it. If you are traveling from east Tennessee trying to get to I-40 on the North Carolina side...
You can take us19e out of Roan Mountain thru Newland N.C. down 181 into Morganton to I-40 or 105 into Boone and down 421 into Wilksboro back to I-40. Some of the roads like 105 are down to one lane but they are open. I live in Avery County N.C and they are reporting a lot of roads "closed" that are actually open.
Thanks for saying that. All hikers need to get together and help these towns anyway they can.
I’m in Franklin NC. Had Cullasaja River almost spilled in roadways. Asheville looks like war zone. I have a son that has lived there for 15 years but hasn’t spoken to me in that time. I’m very worried. Clayton, GA had/has bad tree damage. They just got phone, power, internet back.
Thank you, Ramdino for the update.
You bet!
God's Pit Crew out of Danville, Virginia will be on the scene I feel certain!
Thanks for this information.
If your line crews were sent to FL they should be returning soon based off how well the power has been restored down there already
I was watching Ryan Halls livestream of Helene when he realized it was North Carolina bound. He expressed concern for Western NC and stated that it was going to be absolutely catastrophic for you folks. I'm trying to wrap my head around the 5-7 inches of rain in 24 hours. Staggering.
Try 27 inches of rain
@@Ramdinohikes just read through the rain totals. Absolutely staggering.
The only way to get across Nolichucky River is Old Asheville hwy near Greeneville, TN and down near Newport. Hot Springs intial clean up is going on in the community. There'll be plenty of clean up going on for a while, so let things settle down and allow access to open up before pitching in to help. Thanks
This is sad hear and see I'm so sorry for everyone I'm going to see if I can donate to help Ram
Thanx Dino, we rely on your info.
My pleasure!
Nice video thank for update hope you get your power back soon
Me too
Thank you ❤
Radmdino, was in Erwin Sunday. Made a picture of Uncle Johnnys from across the river. Bridge completely gone. The areas by the river gone. Very sad. Hikers can get back on trail at Rock Creek Park or on up to Unaka Mountain.
Right now is not a good idea to be on trail, but tks
You're a good dude! Thanks for the videos.
I appreciate that!
Your so right about being on the trail. If you hiking SOBO find a safe spot and call it hike. Wish everyone the best of luck and prayers go out to all of the people in need.
Will have to pray for evey one down that way and may not do my section hike to spring
Thank you for all you do. By reporting information on the AT as it happens, It helps to keep us safe. Glad you and your family (doggy too) are ok. Hope you all get things somewhat back to normal soon. God bless. 🕯
Thank-you
Thank you for all the updates ! You’re on the ball keeping everyone updated . Be safe !
Thank you, I will
Thanks and hope you are well. Here's info on storing gas. Mechanic recommended a product called HEET. The yellow bottle is for gas. Can get at auto parts store. This takes water out or separates it from gas. Stabilizer does not. This product greatly enhances the gas for real long term storage. Used in boat, car gas, and the red? bottle of HEET is for diesel. Cheap yet effective.
Thanks for the info!
Many hikers sponsor LMNT. Maybe they could help sponsor a hostel rebuild?
Agreed
I think you said it best could be said. This community will come together. God bless..
It’s unreal the damage from Helene, I had no idea it was so bad in western NC. Thanks for keeping us posted Ramdino and putting out the word for where to donate.
You bet
I'm with you. Get off the trail. Thanks for the updates.

Thanks for the update. I know lots of people are pulling for you guys!
Thanks for the update Ramdino. Careful with that chainsaw. Too many injuries after Katrina with chainsaws. Stay safe.🙏😊❤
I'll do my best Fer sure
Love, prayers and blessings to all involved… ❤❤❤❤❤
Hey ramdino glad you and your family and pups are ok keep us updated god speed buddy
Thank you, I will
Just wondering if you think there a bunch hikers stuck out there on the trail. Do you think must hikers got out in time.
No I think they are OK. Haven't heard of any
Your channel popped up in my feed. Thanks for updates. I live in Houston area and have been in a lot of hurricanes. So i want to know how y'all are doing.
We're making it
Prayers for everyone to get threw this difficult time. Ramido stay safe. Thanks for update even without up having no power.
Much appreciated
Good video. I hope that you have a solar panel to charge your your electronics. How is your job doing? We went through 10 days without power 13 years ago. It was tough. Good Luck, Rick
No solar panel. Currently on a generator.
@@Ramdinohikes I hope that you have a siphon to get gas out of one of your vehicles. Good Luck, Rick
Amen!
anyone with a Zoleo or a Garman can get out messages by satellite too where are all the hikers in the AT community now, get hustling folks and give back to the ones who with their taxes made your hike possible.
Ramdimo, thanks for your updates. Please be careful working out there. Praying for you and everyone affected.
Ramdino, I live in North ATL (Cumming ga) avid backpacker, and semi retired do you have any numbers I could contact to volunteer in a location, not a contractor or anything just want to help clear debris or assist contractors anyway i can ..... please point me in a direction and i will help .....thank you for all you do!

I'm sure any of the hostels could use your help in Tenn., NC Virginia. Or you could help Mtn. communities by volunteering with Samaritans Purse, Red Cross. Ga Baptist Men or NC Baptist Men

Thanks so much for this update

Don’t come to East Tennessee,we are still in search and rescue,,as of last night NC was begging people not to come, there will be time ,later. No cell,no internet,no power,,no clean water.. These towns in East Tennessee look like a WAR ZONE ,Local news said the Creeper Trail is gone ,Roan Mountain had 100mph wind and almost 30 inches of rain. North Carolina is just as bad ,I could write a book, but plenty on line . Prayers is what we need, and Donate to who ever you choose,if you choose. My beautiful East Tennessee that I love……will never be the same 🥲 🌿🍃
Donations can be dropped off at Hickory Nc or Lincolnton NC airports and crews are flying supplies in where roads are no longer useable. Info is slow but as time goes by more access roads are cleared and emergency services and volunteers can get in.
The AT should be closed, the U.S. Forest Service should close all National Forest, There's too much devastation, death and destruction. I've subscribed to a few of the hiker's channels as well as your channel. Now I'm wondering if all are safe, and it's going to be quite a while before we know if they've made it out without injury. The AT and all those responsible should have made a decision to close prior to the storm. It's easy to second guess but I worked as an Emergency Management Director here in Ky in the 2012 tornado that caused death and destruction. The recovery from this will take a long time and some of it will never recover. My thoughts and prayers are for everyone affected by this storm.
@laurelcoem9759 the AT is officially closed from mile zero to mile 864 in Virginia at Rockfish Gap. Great Smokey Mountains NP is also closed. It was announced Sunday on the ATC website.
@@MosshikesTY for this information. ✝️🇺🇲🙏❤️🦅
thank you for the message and status updates
No worries
In 1990 hikers didn't go to uncle Johnny's (it wasn't a thing yet) the bridge was new & not open officially, we had to road walk to other bridge towards town.
Mud slides will be a serious problem now.
