- At 5:47 AM on August 12th, 2024, Tara Dower began an attempt to set the Fastest Known Time (FKT) of the Appalachian Trail. After 40 days of relentless progress, this film follows her through the final, crucial 12 hours of her journey. Tara was not alone in this journey - this remarkable feat would not have been possible without the unwavering support of her crew, who helped guide, motivate, and sustain her every step of the way. Ultimately, Tara made history on September 21st, 2024 at 11:53 PM by setting a new overall Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Appalachian Trail in 40 days, 18 hours, and 5 minutes. Can’t stop crying watching this! Love everything about it, the team effort, the grit, the sheer amazingness of this accomplishment! You have set the bar high and showed so many girls/women to come what we can do! 💗
I teared up when Rascal said, "Because I've asked her to do things that are impossible, and she still somehow does it. She whines and complains about it, but she still somehow does it." The idea of someone at Tara's level whining and complaining really humanizes this incredible feat, and somehow makes it seem even more impressive and beautiful to me.
This is one the most amazing sports accomishments of all time, because of the 40+ day length of: the sustained courage, pain, and all out effort. Plus, the training that went into being fit enough to do this. Absolutely remarkable!
I teared up at the end, good for Tara. I’d say it’s a noteworthy accomplishment for this year from the world of sports. Let’s not forget that in 2024 Jasmin Paris conquered Barkley, and did so in unintentional dramatic fashion at the finish line with seconds to spare. On August 31, Kilian Jornet finished his Alpine Connections project, linking all 82 4,000 meter peaks of the Alps in a jaw dropping 19 days. But…
Candy Mama averaged somewhere around 55 miles/+13,000’/18 hrs per day for 40 days straight on a trail that is often more so just a series of rocks and tree roots to take the overall AT FKT…so you’re right, total bad@$$ and legendary performance. I didn’t think 2024 could top 2023.

She’s talented but in the past decade other women have held the overall FKTs on the AT and PCT. And i think AZT and possibly more. She’s not an anomaly.
I think a better description is she single-handedly elevated sport in general. Set a new benchmark for all.

This conquest is something unbelievable. I'm an ordinary runner and I can't imagine what it's like to run 80km on the trail for 40 days in a row. A woman's strength is limitless! Congratulations, Tara!

An epic feat for the ages, I am so in awe. I got to chat with her support crew in Shenadoah NP and they were incredibly fun and friendly. Later I got to see Tara and JP run by. It made me wish I were 30 years younger and as daring and bold as them.
She surely earned a Barkley spot.
Watching this while holding my six month old daughter while she sleeps with tears in my eyes. I’ll show her this one day as proof she can do anything she wants

Uroy? I know Katie and Courtney both had banger years, but this feat by Tara feels transcendental.
Not to take anything away from Courtney, but I don't think her 2024 really compares to Katie's 2024 simply because of less competitive races. Katie blew the roof off two of the most competitive women's hundred milers of all time. I have a tough time comparing a FKT to race results, but this is obviously extremely impressive. Also, Jasmin's Barkley finish is obviously similarly historic.

Something I have not been able to find the answer to. Did she run the red route or did she run another route that was shorter. Did she run the whole trail or did she do bypasses? Can't find the answer to this.

when you put it that way, you could make the argument that there are only a few basic storylines in any given domain and everything ever produced is an homage to one of the 4 or 5 forms..you might like reading the book "Story" by Robert McKee..talks about this at length
Please don't do this to the AT, it should be enjoyed for it's beauty and ecology. If you want to do a race, do a marathon or a Mudder, or some other insane invention to prove how tough you are before you blow out your knees, hips or ankles, and suffer the permanent injuries. Moderation in all things is a smart guide to life.
A Kenyan marathoner will eat this trail with an Empala around his neck.
