Did this at my job for making us work over the weekend yet not getting paid for the weekends. So leadership came at me later claiming i could get fired for creating a group of workers that go against the direction leadership is wanting them to go.
I eventually ended up with a meeting with the vice president of the department. It now not being about working weekends but about being a good worker by doing what Im told.
So when asked i answered no not even if she told me would I work on the weekends because it is not company policy for us to be obligated to work on weekends. She held it in and even though she claimed that many other states were being made to do this I knew my state had protection.

"For future reference" anytime you're obligated to do anything. This includes working at home, taking business phone calls, even meetings. You are obligated to be paid. If they can write you up for not coming in that 30 minutes early. And they can pay you for that 30 minutes as well.
I had to do this with a company that expected us to all of a sudden show up 15 minutes early and if we didn't clock in 15 minutes prior to our shift we would be written up. To which I promptly told them that if I'm not getting paid for that 15 minutes I will not be clocking in until exactly 6:00. a.m.. that rule lasted a total of 2 days.

Yeah, the choice is flex time or overtime. Pick one, because not getting paid for being on the job is both illegal and NOT happening. That's what salarymen get contracts to cover.

If these meetings were arranged verbally by your department head, for future meetings get them to confirm them in writing and with the times that your required to be there. So you’ll be able to have a paper trail for HR.

"You're the only person who made a big deal about it." is what my old boss would say to me while all my co-workers who went along with being taken advantage of were constantly upset and wondering why I wasn't. I eventually left as it was very sad to work there. It's been 2yrs since I left and 3/4 of the original staff have left.

Granted, if the boss is half-decent he would offer something in return.
Like, at least stuff like ordering a meal for your crew on that day. Or after x meetings people get an extra day off.
Small things like that. That way working 8:30 once a month wouldnt be a big deal.
